LIFESTYLE LETTER

Welcome to the New Year For most of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. We approached this issue of Roswell City Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term, but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to inspire you to make lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. I, personally, find myself wanting to try new things, activities, food and explore ways to gain more happiness this upcoming year versus making goals or resolutions per se. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that moves the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! Check out some of our local places to find relaxation and rest and beauty health on page 30. For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and crème brûlée every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym like some of the featured ones we have in Roswell on page 46 AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try at Bask Steakhouse. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, fulfilling and fabulous year. Cheers to you Roswell for a wonderful 2024 and beyond. Please continue to support our local businesses and I hope to see you around our great town soon!

REGENERATIVE MEDICINE AND Stem Cell Therapy Stem cells - a term that is frequently heard, but rarely understood. What exactly are they, and what can they do? Join us as we debunk the myths surrounding regenerative medicine and shed light on the incredible potential of stem cell therapy.

THE WONDERS OF MODERN MEDICINE ARTICLE BY EDDIE ALMASI

Antoine and his number one and two fans.

“It has helped me regain a sense of normalcy and to enjoy regular activities with my family again.” In America, the most commonly used stem cells come from umbilical cord blood and tissue of healthy newborn babies. These remarkable cells can be injected into the body, making their way to damaged and inflamed areas. Once there, they send signals to the body, prompting it to initiate the healing process. At Innovation Health, we have witnessed the transformative power of stem cell therapy in the lives of countless patients. However, one story stands out to us - the remarkable journey of Antoine Williams. Antoine, a former infantryman and officer in the U.S. Army, came to us six months ago. His back and neck pain had become debilitating, exacerbated by his combat tour in Syria and Iraq. Exhausting all conventional treatments such as corticosteroid injections, physical therapy, and even acupuncture, Antoine remained skeptical but decided to put his trust in our dedicated staff. Undergoing stem cell therapy at our facility, Antoine received a total of 4ccs of stem cells. After just three weeks, he experienced a remarkable improvement in his condition. Antoine could not only lay on the floor without pain, but also engage in playful activities with his 4-year-old daughter. "Stem cell therapy has been an instrumental part of my pain management," Antoine shared. "It has helped me regain a sense of normalcy and to enjoy regular activities with my family again." Antoine's story is just one example of the incredible potential of regenerative medicine and stem cell therapy. As more and more research is conducted, we continue to uncover the remarkable healing properties of these little-known wonders of modern medicine. Whether it is relieving chronic pain, repairing damaged tissues, or improving overall well-being, the possibilities are endless. Discover the power of stem cells and embark on a journey of hope and healing in the realm of modern medicine.

Eddie Almasi is a first-generation American with over 10 years in emergency medicine experience. He was an Army medic for six years then worked in the Emergency Department for four years. He transitioned to integrated medicine because he fell in love with the world of HRT and peptides. InnovationHRT.com

SPEAKEASY SANCTUARY ARTICLE BY ROSWELL CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF

Step back in time to an era of gatherings, jazz-filled nights, and hidden indulgences. Local interior design firm Three 11 Interiors and Storybook Builders' latest project takes inspiration from the vibrant spirit of 1920s Chicago and brings it to life in a modern-day speakeasy like no other, where the roaring twenties meets contemporary design. The speakeasy-inspired basement features authentic details with low lighting that casts a warm glow on the paneled walls and a subtle scent of aged wood and whiskey that lingers in the air. Every element has been carefully curated to evoke the essence of a 1920s Chicago speakeasy. "While staying true to the era's aesthetic, we've added an industrial twist to elevate the design. Antique gold accents, vintage-inspired light fixtures and mural, along with walls adorned in millwork are combined with rich, dark woods and luxurious fabrics," says Leigh Nicholson, interior designer and owner of Three 11 Interiors. "The contrast between the raw, industrial elements and the refined elegance of the 1920s creates a captivating visual experience." No speakeasy is complete without a stunning bar. This design features

a custom-made bar crafted from stained wood and leathered quartz, adorned with brass accents and banker wire. The bar serves as a focal point with the whimsical conversation piece, "Frankie the deer." Intimate seating areas, draped in velvet and leather, provide a comfortable sanctuary to unwind. Plush seating, art deco-inspired furnishings, and vintage-inspired décor pieces add a touch of glamour and opulence. Each seating area is carefully designed to evoke a sense of exclusivity. Claire and her team at Three 11 worked with Storybook Builders to bring the magic to life. Founded in 2003 by Chad Kee, Storybook makes it a priority to stay on top of the latest industry trends and while analyzing living spaces optimizing them for beautiful aesthetics and utility. Three 11 Interiors is a full-service interior design firm located in Alpharetta, specializing in residential remodels, kitchens and baths, new construction as well as furniture, window treatments, and accessories. Behind the Scenes at Cirque du Soleil ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS

Cirque du Soleil’s 20th Big Top show brings bold new visuals and a unique aesthetic on tour. Packed with vibrant characters, inspiring music, astounding lights and projections, and never-before-seen acrobatic feats, ECHO invites audiences on a journey through a universe of color, wonder, and infinite possibilities.

HOW DO THE PERFORMERS DO IT?

Sue G. Collins: On the day of a performance, what does your day look like? Lucas Coelho Costa: I try to sleep 9 hours every night, but it’s difficult – usually, I sleep between 7 and 9 hours. I make sure I wake up with a good amount of coffee and protein. Afterwards, I go to work on my bike, riding around looking at the beautiful trees and getting a dose of nature. As an artist coach, I spend some time training my fellow artists, which means I have to be here early. Normally I coach around 3-4 sessions of strength conditioning a day. I then make time to eat between training and staging for my number. I am a pole artist and the backup cartographer, so I do bungee straps as well. Two hours before the show, I start my make-up, which gives me time to warm up between make-up and the show. I take 15-30 minutes to warm up – doing some stretching and some exercises that activate the muscles that I am going to use. I also try to think of injury-prevention exercises. Throughout the day, since I’m a vegetarian, I pay special attention to getting protein-rich foods in my diet – lots of eggs and tofu! After the show, I take 10-15 minutes to stretch and cool down before I leave work and get back on my bike! When I get home, I try to eat another meal – since our schedule is really packed, I try to make it quick – bread and eggs usually!

SGC: HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO EXPLORE ATLANTA?

LCC: I’ve been to the BeltLine, which is a cool place to ride my bike and find good coffee. We don’t get a lot of time off, but I try to make time to explore every city we visit. I also really love the street art here, so taking walks around is always fun. There’s always something new to look at!

SGC: WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO PERFORM WITH CIRQUE?

LCC: It’s been a dream since I watched my first Cirque show – it was Corteo on DVD. My aunt gave it to me and I watched it at least 20 times. It really made me dream about being one of the acrobats on stage. I started gymnastics when I was 7, and eventually transitioned to acrobatics. At that point, I got in touch with a friend of mine who connected me to casting. I sent in tapes for high barre, one of the disciplines I’m trained in, and I got cast a few days later!

SGC: WHAT ARE A FEW SONGS YOU LISTEN TO WHEN YOU’RE WORKING OUT THAT GET YOU GOING?

LCC: I really like Rufus du Sol, he’s great to work out to, or any songs that have a good beat, like EDM and techno. Sometimes I switch it up and listen to jazz rap, it gives me a chiller vibe. Cirque du Soleil is at Atlantic Station through January 21. CirqueduSoleil.com/usa/atlanta/shows

All around us, there are pressures and demands. This month, we wanted to provide a few ideas for self care. Roswell is teeming with day spas, massage studios and wellness professionals to accompany you on your journey. So, brighten and boost your mood, and calm anxiety. Try something new and make your health a priority in 2024! Happy New Year!

FACE FORWARD!

Estheticians at Spa Sydell recommend medical-grade skincare from brands like SkinBetter Science, Hydrinity, and SkinMedica. Start with a customized facial tailored to specific skin types considering factors such as sensitivity, hydration levels,

acne tendencies, or aging concerns. A qualified esthetician will create a bespoke plan that combines suitable products, techniques, and treatments. Then, take it up a notch with PDO Threads, a type of biocompatible thread used in non-surgical cosmetic procedures to lift and rejuvenate the skin. Made from a safe, absorbable polymer, these threads stimulate collagen production as they gradually dissolve, resulting in improved skin texture and firmness. Inserted into the skin by a healthcare professional, PDO threads offer immediate lifting effects and long-term benefits by promoting natural tissue regeneration.

During the cold season a 60-90 minute hot stone massage is calling your name. The combination of heat and massage techniques helps alleviate muscle tension, and improves blood circulation, providing a sense of relaxation that makes it an effective method for both physical and mental rejuvenation. Consider CoolSculpting, a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses controlled cooling to target and eliminate stubborn fat cells. During the treatment, a specialized device is applied to the targeted area, chilling the fat cells to a temperature that triggers their natural breakdown without harming surrounding tissues. Over several weeks, the body naturally processes and eliminates these treated fat cells, resulting in a more contoured appearance in the treated area. CoolSculpting is known for its ability to reduce localized fat pockets resistant to diet and exercise, offering a non-surgical alternative to traditional CONTINUED >

Going to the yoga studio when you haven't been in a while can be very intimidating. There are so many amazing online resources where you can find yoga for free or for a low monthly cost. Ahoo Sarab of Korsi Yoga recommends starting in the comfort of your home. Once you’ve taken at least three classes, you’ll start to understand how a class flows. Having this bit of knowledge will make your first time into the studio a lot less intimidating. “All of us started at the beginning. Many of our students had never practiced yoga before coming to us, and now we see them almost daily,” says Ahoo. Always let the instructor know you are new and set up your mat at the back of the class, so you can watch others, if you get lost. Take a child's pose or lie down on your mat as often as needed, listen to your body, and have fun with it. Korsi is adding a small juice and smoothie shop to the studio. M UST SE E | FI TNES S

Lifelong athlete Brandi Rhodes has opened her first studio, Naked Mind Yoga + Pilates, in Roswell. Brandi is a certified yoga and mat/ reformer Pilates instructor who has taken everything she’s learned from a lifetime of fitness and performance, to create a place that caters to people in all stages of their health journeys. From beginners to seasoned athletes, she looks to work with anyone with a slight curiosity, to a burning passion for yoga and/or Pilates and aims to help them meet and surpass their personal wellness goals. Naked Mind is the first studio in the area to offer both yoga and Pilates under one roof with a variety of heated and non-heated classes. They also offer childcare, allowing parents to prioritize themselves and their families! Brandi began figure skating at the age of four and enjoyed a successful 17-year competitive career. She then moved on to a demanding 10-year career in the professional wrestling industry. Starting as a ring announcer and backstage interviewer for WWE, Brandi went on to wrestle independently and in 2019 helped spearhead All Elite Wrestling (AEW), by becoming their chief brand CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 4 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . officer as well as a top female wrestler and on-screen presence. She is the first African American woman to hold any executive position in a major North American wrestling promotion. She and her husband, WWE superstar Cody Rhodes (The American Nightmare) have been married for 10 years. Cody, son of the late WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes, grew up in East Cobb attending Lassiter High School. It's no surprise that the Rhodes have put down roots in Roswell with their daughter Liberty and two dogs. Brandi hopes this studio will become a legacy for her toddler yogi. We caught up with Brandi to ask about her home, sweet home.

SUE G. COLLINS: HOW DID YOU CHOOSE ROSWELL FOR YOUR HOME? 38

M UST SE E | FI TNES S

Brandi Rhodes: We wanted to be in a thriving community that's great for families with great schools, yet not too far away from the great things Atlanta has to offer and of course, the airport for all of our travel needs!

SGC: AND FOR YOUR BUSINESS HOME, WHY DOES ROSWELL WORK FOR YOU?

BR: When we decided to call Roswell home we fell in love with everything it has to offer and all of the opportunity that comes with being in a great area. I wanted to help build the community by offering this fitness and wellness studio and offer childcare for busy parents like me who sometimes can't prioritize themselves while caring for kids.

“When we decided to call Roswell home we fell in love with everything it has to offer and all of the opportunity that comes with being in a great area. I wanted to help build the community by offering this fitness and wellness studio...” SGC: WHAT ARE YOUR GO-TO SPOTS IN ROSWELL?

BR: Crazy Love is the BEST for coffee. A working lunch is always well served at The Fickle Pickle. Dinner date nights at Little Alley Steak are always great and we love a family meal out at North End Kitchen. Happy New Year to Brandi and the team at Naked Mind! 10930 Crabapple Rd. WHAT’S HOT The numbers are in, and a clear winner has been declared. Even better, it’s unanimous. Both the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), and The Aesthetic Society have declared that liposuction remains the most popular plastic surgery procedure in the world. In 2022, there were more than 2.3 million liposuction procedures performed across the globe, a 21.1% increase over 2021, according to the latest numbers from ISAPS. ASPS reported that there were 325,669 liposuction procedures performed in the US in 2022, up 23% from 2019. The Aesthetic Society reported that there were 405,328 liposuction procedures performed in 2022. Yes, this is down 12% from 2021, but liposuction still experienced a larger surge than the other surgical procedures during the pandemic, jumping 85% over 2019 levels, compared with a 74% increase for abdominoplasty and a 39% increase for breast augmentations. While down from 2021, liposuction was still 63% above its pre-pandemic level in 2022, The Aesthetic Society reports. There’s a simple reason that liposuction continues to reign supreme: it works. Liposuction also provides close-toinstant results and instant gratification (a big selling point for impatient millennials). The unwanted fat is sucked out for a slimmer appearance. Yes, this can be at the expense of

some downtime (think swelling and redness), and it doesn’t affect muscles or skin quality, but most patients find liposuction to be worth it. I foresee an even longer reign for this highly effective and safe plastic surgery procedure. WHAT’S NOT Sure, some of us gave up carbs and upped our workout game during the COVID-19 lockdown period, but a lot more folks turned to stress eating and used the lack of access to a gym as an excuse to Netflix and chill. In fact, 39% of people gained weight during the pandemic, with weight gain defined as more than the normal fluctuation of 2.5 pounds. About 27% of people gained less than 12.5 pounds, and about 10% gained more than 12.5 pounds, with 2% gaining more than 27.5 pounds, according to a study from Epic Research. Thanks to the widespread use of Ozempic/Wegovy (semaglutide) or Mounjaro (tirzepatide) for weight loss (and hopefully adherence to a healthy diet, regular exercise) and maybe even liposuction or energy-based fat reduction, most people have shed their COVID 15. Now, some people have developed unwanted side effects from rapid weight loss in their cheeks. “Ozempic face” refers to withdrawn, sucked-in cheeks, and “Ozempic butt” is the media’s name for deflated, sagging, or wrinkled buttock cheeks. Such side effects are known to follow rapid and massive weight loss. Expect to see more patients looking for solutions to put the volume back in their deflated cheeks. Dr. Graivier is the owner and founder of The Graivier Center for Plastic Surgery & MedSpa in Roswell.

Getting fit in Roswell has never been more fun. Here’s a menu of some of our favorite gyms.

BODY FIT TRAINING At Body Fit Training, coaches are constantly innovating and mixing things up with their progressive training program so your body won’t plateau and you’ll see progress towards your fitness goals. The new program block to start the year strong includes a great lineup. BFT boasts 14 different types of classes rotating for a well-rounded progressive program. Look for a strength session on Tuesday, January 2, focusing on the brain-to-muscle connection with lifting weights, followed up by Shred on January 3, a class that has two blocks of cardio and two blocks of lifting weights. “Whether you are already lifting weights or are curious about adding this to your fitness journey, these are some sessions that you need to try! You’ll experience the most efficient 50 mins of strength training,” says Alberto Perez, Body Fit Training owner.

We asked about his go-to power snacks. “Glad you asked that, because nutrition is key to achieving your fitness goals. I like to keep it simple, not necessarily for snacks but in general,” says Alberto. “Prioritize eating protein, fats, and carbs that are easy to find and fun to eat. If we make a conscious effort to eat protein at every meal or snack, it’ll be easier to meet our daily protein requirements and better yet, protein is very filling, so, when we prioritize protein we won’t be hungry for fats and carbs.” Hydration is key. Everyone is different regarding eating before training, but hydration is a must. Alberto suggests a glass of water with one lime and one teaspoon of pink salt. Salt and minerals allow water to travel into our cells to keep us hydrated during training. While goal setting is important, community can be a major motivating factor. Alberto says, “As I like to think, achieving your fitness goals should be the byproduct and not the reason why you exercise every day. Find a place where you have a good time. Consistency will drive results. Strong muscles are key for an enhanced quality of life. Do it safely, with proper guidance, with friends, and in a cool place.” CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 4 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/R O S W E L LGA

CRUNCH FITNESS Crunch is a gym that believes in making serious exercise fun by fusing fitness and entertainment and pioneering a philosophy of “No Judgments.” Crunch serves a fitness community for all kinds of people with all types of goals, exercising all different ways, working out at the same place together. Today, they are renowned for creating one-of-a-kind group fitness classes and unique programming for their wildly diverse members. The gym is launching some new additions to the group fitness schedule. The club is hosting a "New

Year, Better You" challenge for members to keep them accountable and motivated the first month of the year. Tony Scrimale is CEO at CR Fitness, LLC and is happy to offer Roswell City Lifestyle readers an assessment with a trainer, known as the "Crunch One Kickoff,” for only $10 to help members get started right in the new year. He says, "At Crunch, we can guarantee you’ll be greeted with a friendly face as you walk in the door.” New members can jump into some fun, accessible classes that won’t be as intimidating as the weight floor. From there, they will get you set up with a trainer to help provide you with workouts and teach you proper form. "This will also ease the intimidation of working out and give you a plan to execute so you feel confident while being in the gym,” says Tony. His tips on fueling up? Prior to working out, go with carbs and fats to provide energy. His go-to is an apple and peanut butter. Chase a workout with a protein shake and pat yourself on the back!

SFX FITNESS Meet trainer, Yara Matthew, raised in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands and now a fixture in Roswell’s fitness world. At SFX Fitness, she is a manager, certified as a NASM certified personal trainer and a pain-free performance specialist. She recently completed her kettlebell certification, so she brings new enthusiasm and strategies to her clients’ workouts. To those who are thinking of starting a fitness journey this month, her initial advice is to figure out your “why.” “Whether your reason is for health benefits or body aesthetics, this will give you a clear vision and the right energy needed to accomplish your goals,” Yara says. “And, I will let you know that there is no such thing as motivation. Maybe in the beginning, sure, but that will die down very quickly. Self-discipline is what we lack and that is what you will need to rely on throughout your fitness journey!” Inside the gym, she is known for her dynamic warm ups. She says, “I take warm ups very seriously because they lower risk of injury, muscle tension and pain and also improve performance.” Her goal in life? “To bring value to others’ lives through fitness and good health.” Yara enjoys singing and making her own music when she’s not jumping, squatting, running, lifting and coaching.

A LLOY PERSONA L TRAINING Alloy Personal Training is adding a partnership with Marek Health, expanding on owner Jenn Benson’s program of customized small group functional strength training. “This is exciting news because we can now fuse cutting edge health technology and personalized fitness with a new level of comprehensive wellness,” says Jenn. “This includes blood panels and lab reviews with actionable advice and treatment options. You can't get more personalized than that!” Jenn’s book, Dear Couch, We're Through! is available on Amazon for her real-life experiences and fun ideas. “The short answer is 'start simple and simply start!’ Take one action step, the rest will follow.” CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 4 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . BODY BA R PILATES ROSW ELL Opening in December 2023, in the Connexion Roswell, BODYBAR Pilates Roswell will offer a modern take on reformer Pilates in an environment that is conducive to building communities. Using core Pilates principles, they will offer group pilates classes 7 days a week. Each 40 to 50-minute class is designed to provide a full-body workout that is high-intensity, low-impact and perfect for increasing flexibility, muscle strength, posture and boosting overall health. Whether a member is a 70-yearold wellness guru, a 40-something working parent, or a 25-year-old who is just getting started, the BODYBAR workout can be customized to meet everyone’s personal fitness goals. Join in welcoming BODYBAR at a ribbon cutting on January 15 at 11 a.m. The day will include studio tours, staff introductions, light refreshments, raffles and membership discounts. The BODYBAR mission is to share an amazing workout experience, rooted in the fundamentals of reformer Pilates, to build diverse communities where love,

respect, and positive energy help us achieve the best versions of ourselves. The hardest step for anything is the first step - deciding to walk in the door, to take the first step and try something new. But once you do, it's amazing to see how your body and mentality can thrive when you engage in a regular fitness routine. Moving the body stimulates endorphins which elevates mood and allows the body's nervous system a reset. Incorporating an exercise program likes Pilates will also help increase flexibility, improve posture and boost overall well-being. The BODYBAR Pilates moved into the Atlanta area when studio owner Shannon Renegar, opened the first Georgiabased BODYBAR Pilates in Alpharetta in January 2021. The management team including Shannon, AlpharettaRoswell general manager Jennifer Isaac, Roswell studio manager Brynn Hestand, and fitness manager Stephanie Olic, along with an amazing team of instructors and lobby staff are excited to make Roswell their new home.

At Adams Custom Shutters & Blinds family is the foundation of the business. Phil Adams credits his wife Audrey who helps with orders, bookkeeping and logistics. Josh, their youngest son has helped in manufacturing and installation since he could drive and became full-time after graduating high school. Their oldest, Justin, started as an installer and moved to sales after graduating from college. Recently, their daughter-in-law Scarlett Adams has helped them branch more into drapery and interior design. They carry top-of-the-line fabric, rods, finials, and much more, partnering with local suppliers as much as possible. In 2001, Phil noticed plantation shutters were becoming popular so he started his business to fulfill a need in the community. Plantation shutters are still very popular today. "They are a standard that has been around for decades and will always have a solid place in the window treatment market,” says Phil. "They provide energy efficiency and have evolved over the years with different types of wood and plastic materials to make them more durable so they last a lifetime. Recently, the larger 4 1/2" louvers have become more popular due to their ability to let in more light and have more visibility. We have also developed poly materials that hold up to

moisture and humidity, hold up long term and are much lighter in weight compared to the real wood shutters. A major advantage to wood vs poly is the ability to stain and custom match paint to match doors and trim colors.” One of the newest trends for 2024 is motorized shades and blinds. Technology plays a huge role in helping make these motors smaller, last longer, and more affordable. The other huge trend, Phil notes, is draperies as more people want more light and to maximize their view. “We have more hardware and fabric options to meet customers' design styles and budgets than ever before.” The newest addition to the team is Scarlett Adams. She grew up in Alpharetta and has always been fascinated and intrigued by interior design. “I love serving others and making them feel happy and comfortable in their home. I not only want to put in my touch and style, but I also want to incorporate the client/home's personality while adding functionality to the room,” she says. Justin and Scarlett have five beautiful children together. Josh Adams has three amazing children. Scarlett and Justin serve on the board of Forsyth County Community Connection. They help the community to better serve our foster and homeless families in the county. Audrey serves at the Dawsonville Medical Center every Tuesday.

BUILDING COMMUNITY

ARTICLE BY ROSWELL CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF

O UR TOWN | EDUCATI O N

Students at Roswell High School (RHS) in Fulton County Schools get to “bust out the power tools” during their school day and enjoy hands-on learning in carpentry, electrical wiring, plumbing and masonry. The school has a fully-equipped shop stocked with equipment, building materials and other supplies. RHS’ construction program began in 2013 by Zach Fields, a former RHS teacher who later joined the non-profit organization Construction Ready (ConstructionReady.org), previously known as the Construction Education Foundation of Georgia. Construction Ready (CR) is now a valuable school partner offering training, hiring assistance and program design. To kickstart the program – the first on the district’s north side - Fields received funding, volunteer assistance and network connections from the Roswell Rotary Association. Later, a local volunteer group, Toolbox, lent helpful support. Now a thriving program with approximately 100 students taking classes daily, many participate in RHS’ award-winning SkillsUSA club which competes regionally, nationally and internationally. At that level, students can design and build a basic four-wall house with masonry, plumbing, electrical and a roof! “The Roswell construction program provides a great opportunity for students to build applied skills and be exposed to industry leaders rallying to

support the program,” says Fields. “Students learn about leadership and project management that will help them succeed and receive significant industry connections.” These partner leaders have mentored students through the curriculum pathways to become work-ready for construction careers. Importantly, it is becoming a game changer in upward mobility for students whose post-secondary plans lean toward workforce vs. college. The program not only benefits students with workforce development, teaching home maintenance skills and providing a change of pace from traditional academics, it supports local and regional industry by creating an employee pipeline to help fill the skilled trade gap. Recently, Fields, now vice president leading support of construction, welding and architecture programs in Georgia’s public schools,

returned to RHS to help save the school’s construction program after an instructor’s sudden retirement. The collaborative relationship between CR, RHS administration and the district’s career, technical and agricultural education (CTAE) staff, rejuvenated the program to its former flourishing status. “The construction program has taught me skills that will be helpful throughout my life,” says RHS senior Billy Clouse, a member of the school’s state championship competition construction team. “Unlike other classes, we get to work hands-on in a construction lab with real materials.” RHS feeder schools, Crabapple and Elkins Pointe middle schools and Mountain Park Elementary School, have adopted similar, age-appropriate programs and engage over 1,200 students in construction classes. STYLIST SPOTLIGHT

What sets master colorist Taylor Dillehay apart from the rest is her attention to detail along with her precision, speed, and natural eye for color. Taylor has a way of creating the perfect blonde for every client’s lifestyle, whether it's a multi-dimensional fireside-warm blonde or an icicle-platinum worthy of a role in Dr. Zhavago, Taylor has mastered it all! "Taylor is magic. She listens to my input and then works her craft to make my hair even better than I imagined - color perfect and healthy. I adore her blond-making skills and always enjoy time spent at Aura with her," beamed one client. Another says, "I ADORE Taylor and her work! She is not only a master colorist with my blonde, but also I never leave her chair without a smile on my face from her contagious, uplifting demeanor. She works with ME and my schedule/budget and always has me looking "natural," but better. She listens to your vision, but also lets you know what is going to work for you, not against you. I would not trust anyone else with my hair". A blonding session at Aura Salon and Spa can break the doldrums of winter in Atlanta. Blend any color with wisdom highlights, transition away from monthly root touch-ups, or let it be the start of a whole new you! Call Aura Salon and Spa today to book a protein-rich or nourishing moisture treatment to bring the luster back to curly hair, straight hair, and everything in between. Winter can be rough on any hair color, but their stylists will consult to customize a treatment for you and make suggestions from their wide range of healing products to keep your hair at its best.

A LETTER FROM SANDY HOLIDAY, ESQ. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR NORTH FULTON COMMUNITY CHARITIES

Dear

Roswell 68

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | EDUCAT ION

For 40 years, North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC) has been a beacon of hope for struggling families in Roswell and North Fulton by helping prevent hunger and homelessness. We remove barriers to financial stability and employability by providing food, clothing, emergency financial assistance, and education services. With last year’s 17 percent increase in rent as well as increases in food and fuel costs, 2023 was especially challenging. People are turning to services like the food pantry and clothing assistance in record numbers to save for bills and mortgage payments. More than 300 families a day visit our food pantry for free groceries, more than 800 families a month visit our thrift shop for free clothing, and over 100 families a month receive emergency financial assistance to stay housed. We continue to raise awareness to increase donations of food, clothing and furniture. We are also renovating our education center to add three additional classrooms. We rely on the support of caring individuals, and North Fulton business, civic, and faith communities. Now more than ever, you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors in need: • Donate gently used clothing and household items to our thrift shop. Sales in the thrift shop are responsible for 25 percent of the annual revenue we need to provide services. • Host a food drive. We are always in need of popular staples like peanut butter, tomato sauce, and cereal. • Host an online fundraiser. Organize your office, faith community, or civic organization – or create a fundraiser to celebrate your birthday.

Roswell’s own Katherine Asman has been making news in the sports world. One of the most dominant goalkeepers in the Big Ten Conference over the past five years, Asman closed out her collegiate career in Happy Valley with her first career All-Region recognition. The Roswell native led the Big Ten this season in goals-against average with a 0.642 mark and additionally paced the league while ranking 22nd nationally in save percentage with a 0.856 tally. Asman finished as the fourth-winningest goalkeeper in Penn State program history, booking a 55-21-10 overall record. She additionally ranked inside the top three at PSU all-time in saves, shutouts and minutes played by a keeper. Asman became the 14th individual in program history to land All-Region Third Team honors from the United Soccer Coaches while booking the third All-North Region Third Team accolade since 2018. “I chose Penn State because the minute I stepped on the campus and was able to witness the environment of the Penn State women’s soccer program, I fell in love,” says Katherine. “You have amazing people working together to create an environment for individual success as well as team success.

If you have ever had that moment in your life where you walked away from a situation as happy as ever, feeling successful and excited, then you can understand how I felt when I left the Penn State campus on my first-ever visit and how I still feel three years later. Penn State is a campus and environment where you are surrounded by others who are striving for success and will push you to reach your goals as well.” Katherine played club soccer for NASA Tophat Soccer Club and won NASA Tophat Soccer Club 2017 South East Conference title, advanced to the 2017 final eighth-round championship, and attended Roswell High School. She is the daughter of Paul and Jennifer Asman of Roswell.

Penn State women's soccer saw a trio of individuals land placements on the United Soccer Coaches All-North Region teams, the organization announced. Senior+ midfielder Cori Dyke and senior+ defender Kate Wiesner each appeared on the All-North Region First Team, while graduate goalkeeper Katherine Asman secured All-North Region Third Team accolades.

The City of Roswell Presents

Profiles in Leadership

Roswell’s Julie Brechbill combines communications prowess and a lifelong interest in government to deliver public information and engagement to residents. Growing up, it wasn’t unusual for Julie Brechbill’s family to serve up an active discussion about politics alongside the meatloaf and mashed potatoes at their dinner table in Peoria, Illinois. “My parents were interested in government and politics. Talking about issues, whether national or local, was always part of our family discussion,” shares Julie. “The Midwestern practicality I learned included an appreciation for civic responsibility and public service.” Now the Communications Director for the City of Roswell, GA, Julie is a valued leader and adviser who collaborates with staff, executive leadership, and elected officials across the City. “The work we do plays a vital role in connecting citizens to their government,” says Julie. “Working in government communications has allowed me to apply my skills with my lifelong interest in government.” While growing up in Illinois, Julie was a solid student, but she particularly excelled at writing. She also distinguished herself as an athlete. She credits playing team sports with teaching her leadership, self-confidence, and the importance of working with people towards a common goal. As she was preparing to leave to attend college, she unexpectedly lost her mother and soon found that she was on her own at the age of seventeen. This profound loss altered her educational plans, and instead of leaving for college, she decided to attend a local community college. It was here that Julie explored her interests and refined her writing skills. Always pragmatic, she decided that a degree (and a job) in journalism would be a real-world application of her writing talents. She became the editor of her community college newspaper, excelled in her classes, and was awarded a full journalism scholarship to Eastern Illinois University. After graduating from college, she moved to Guam, where her husband was stationed while in the Navy. When a job lead for a newspaper fell through, Julie was worried she would have to put her journalism career on hold. But ever

resilient and resourceful, she realized she just had to shift her career off the page and position herself in front of the camera. “I was watching the local news one night, and I thought, ‘You know, I can do that.’ Lo and behold, the station had an opening for a reporter. “What did I know about television news? Absolutely nothing,” Julie laughs. “But I knew journalism, hard work and adaptability.” Julie thought she’d be writing stories for the on-air talent at first, but she soon found herself working on camera, anchoring the evening news. “It was one of the best experiences of my life because it taught me to be calm and self-composed at a very young age. You are live on television, so even if things are going wrong around you, you do not have the luxury of panicking.” When Julie moved back to the mainland, she worked as a reporter for a daily paper in Florida, and a few years later, she landed in the field that would eventually bring her to Roswell: local government communications. Julie was hired by Palm Beach County’s Public Affairs Office, where she worked for 14 years, eventually overseeing the county’s television station (PBC-TV), producing local government programming. By 2003, Julie had three sons and wanted them to grow up in a family community. When she traveled to the City of Roswell for a job interview, it was love at first sight. “The first scene I saw in Roswell was like a Normal Rockwell painting,” Julie recalls. “It was around Christmas, and we were driving by Town Square. The City was holding the annual Lighting of the Tree event. There were families everywhere having a wonderful time.” That was more than 20 years ago. Since then, Julie’s family and career have flourished in Roswell, where she raised her family and established the City’s award-winning Communications Division. “Working in public service is one of the most important things you can do for your community. Government, especially local government, touches its residents directly every single day in some way. So, to be a part of that and to let citizens know how these services directly benefit them is special.” Under Julie’s leadership, Roswell’s Communications team has produced award-winning print and online communications, including websites, social media, videos, community engagement programs, and more. In 2019, Julie was named Communicator of the Year by the City-County Communications and Marketing Association, the premier national government communications association. While accomplishing all of this, Julie also earned her master’s degree in organizational leadership from Colorado State University. “I’ve been with the City for almost 21 years, and it is moving forward at a rapid pace; exciting things are happening. Communications is so important in that process and integral in letting residents know what is happening now and into the future and how those decisions affect their daily lives.” CITY OF ROSWELL, GA - WWW.ROSWELLGOV.COM
