From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to. From the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversations, style permeates every facet of our existence. It is the thread that weaves together the tapestry of our lives.

Style is deeply personal. And it evolves as we celebrate our quirks, our passions, and our desires. Style is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection.

As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. Gibson Honored

James Montgomery Gibson enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was sent to boot camp for orientation and indoctrination. Aviation was in his future, “Hoot,” as he was known, spent a year at Naval Air Station Memphis, for his education in aviation electronics. Upon completion, he was assigned to Carrier Air Wing 10 and VF-62 (Fighter Squadron Sixty-Two) based in Jacksonville. They flew the Vaught F-8 Crusader, commonly known as “The Last Of The Gunfighters.” He was honored as an Esteemed Veteran of Roswell .

Mountain Park Elementary School, under the direction of Principal Ayodele Richardson, is celebrating its 50th anniversary throughout the 2023-2024 school year. Mountain Park's mission statement is Learn to Think! Think to Learn! This mission guides their work.

COJO INTERIORS

Designer Courtney Joines loves a good conversation. She believes in asking pointed questions and is a discerning listener. As an interior designer, these skills are as important to her success as her creativity and style aplomb.

“I meet with clients in their homes before starting projects to review their needs, wants, and budget. I ask a lot of questions, but the most important is how they see themselves using the space,” says Courtney. "Every job is different, but the end goal is always the same: to create spaces my clients love and that meet their needs for years to come.”

When her client purchased a new construction in 2019, they spent the next few years creating beautiful, but functional spaces. The family was drawn to soft blues, greens and grays that carried throughout. They wanted a serene, cozy home without feeling stark or stuffy. And of course, everything had to hold up to young children and pets.

The first project on the priority list was the office. They selected timeless pieces like the antique French cabinet and vintage horse prints. “We added two Ellenburg Chair Company Su chairs with petite frames that fit the room entrance beautifully. We also created a completely custom desk chair from Ellenburg in a cozy crypton fabric,” she says.  A custom area rug with a subtle geometric pattern was selected for the office to help expand the eye in both directions. The same rug design was used

in the dining room to give a cohesive feel as visitors entered the home.

The dining room was constantly evolving as the items they sourced were largely vintage pieces collected over time. The vintage cane back chairs were a fabulous Facebook marketplace find that Courtney painted and reupholstered in a new Schumacher fabric. “We also added an estate sale wall shelf to showcase the clients’ large collection of milk glass. The head chairs in this dining area were Ellenburg Queen chairs. These really gave weight to the lengthy narrow table and helped anchor the large space,” she says.

Originally the family room had two sofas that, although they were 100” long, didn’t have adequate seating space. Courtney opted for two new Ellenburg Chair Co Paces sofas here. The new sofas

were also 100” long, but have a greater seat depth of 40” making them incredibly comfortable and the ideal choice for movie watching as a family. “The unique details of the Paces, like the buttons and skirting, make them sophisticated and even a little dressy without being too formal. Again, the perfect balance of beauty and function,” she says.

The team at CoJo Interiors leans toward classic, timeless pieces and relies less on trends for the larger elements in a room. They like to incorporate pieces that owners currently have and reuse them in new ways, as well as add new light fixtures, lamps, pillows and accessories. This instantly updates a room and bridges the gap between old and new.

“Working on this home was so much fun because it was not just one room, one piece or one design. It was curated, collected and layered over time. Each room beautifully balances classic family pieces with new elements, making this home a true representation of its owners. Again, back to my mantra as their designer…. create spaces the clients love. Not just what’s on trend, not just what’s being sold in stores, but rooms and homes that my clients will love walking into each day.”

Meeting the animated artist in his studio in Franklin, NC, I thought a man with such a big personality must have more than one name.

Poané is making a name for himself in the community, and with collectors and visitors who travel north from Highlands or south from Sylva to commission a portrait or buy an oil painting that speaks to them.

His pet portraits, painted on beautifully finished slabs of wood are flying out of his shop and showroom (shared with other artists). “I get my wood from some friends who have wood mills and people who have trees

taken down on their property. I use black walnut, cedar, pine, maple, box elder maple, Japanese cedar, and much more,” says Poané, who has 30 years of experience as an artist, photographer, makeup artist and hairdresser in New York City.

The idea for painting portraits on polished cross-sections of wood sprang four years ago from his work painting mountain scenes, cardinals, birds, bears, fish, trees, and barns on wood, inspired by the stunning NC countryside where he now lives. He takes commissions for delivery in as little as one day (with a few weeks being the norm). It brings him immeasurable joy when a dog owner exclaims that Poané was able to truly capture the essence and the spirit of the pet.

“All I need is a picture or pictures of their pet to work from and I go from there after taking a deposit and agreeing on a delivery time,” he says.

He also paints family and individual portraits, as well as beloved landscapes and homes. It’s all quite personal and he takes great pride in creating a piece of art that will sing and keep a memory alive for years to come.

“When I’m painting, I am the happiest. I also love painting the Renaissance era, but my customers’ reactions when they see the painting that they commissioned brings me such joy. Also when they pick out pieces from the gallery, it’s very fulfilling.”

FINDING A VOICE

How music therapy for children builds confidence.

A young man is diagnosed with Autism and struggles with motor and sensory skills. During the pandemic, he begins to attend Perfect Harmony Health, and the benefits of music therapy begin to shine through his progress. As he began music therapy, he hoped to be able to accomplish many goals, amongst them being able to articulate the sounds of consonants in speech, particularly words that carry the “L” sound.

After many years of speech therapy, he began working with Allison Lockhart, assistant director and neurological music therapist at Perfect Harmony Health in Roswell. She decided that to work towards his goal, they would start with strengthening the tongue muscle that is used in many consonants. Allison worked with him on both strengthening and stretching the tongue in all directions with exercises.

“We used cues by music, utilizing things like wind instruments to strengthen his lip and tongue muscles,” says Lockhart, MM, LPMT, MT-BC, NMT-F. “We just started working on that and within a few months, he started articulating the L consonant for the first time in his life and now he’s doing that on all of his words.”

This small change of tongue exercises in his daily routine allowed for him to achieve something that so many people take for granted when it comes to their motor and speech skills. For this young man, achieving his lifelong goal improved his day-to-day routine. He was now able to pronounce “Alexa,” the virtual assistant that uses technology to help assist and control different aspects of his home.

Music therapy and its benefits are exemplified through the clients and people that go through music therapy. Whether it is through their achievement of goals or development of skills, music therapy allows their quality of life to improve and change their lives for the better.

“It’s hard to have a disability and not be able to speak your mind when you need to or be able to regulate your system,” says McKensie Taylor, a neurologic music therapist LPMT, MT-BC and Fellow (NMT-F), IWBMC-CE at Perfect Harmony Health. “If you can use something enjoyable, like music, to help you get through that, then it’s kind of combining a passion with quality of life.”

Back in 2003, Lisa Carlquist founded a custom closet company that would change the way people get dressed. Today, Artisan Custom Closets is known for stylish, elegant organization methods, as well as a personable touch and in-house craftsmanship that clients have come to know and love.

"The process to a more organized life is simpler than you might think," assures Artisan’s director of marketing Christina Johnson. After a new client gets in touch, the staff will set up a complimentary, in-home consultation so the client can learn more about the company and find out whether Artisan Custom Closets will work for their home (spoiler alert – the answer is yes!). "These visits are fairly in-depth," says Johnson. "Staff are trained to keenly observe each client’s personal taste and lifestyle."

“While they’re talking to the clients, they are taking notes on the decor and space,” she says. "That way, when they see the space, be it a closet or pantry, they already have an idea, and they can gently lead the vision.”

At Artisan, the team offices are located right beside where the magic happens. Gesturing to the wall beside

her own desk, Johnson explains that the warehouse is where everything is created from scratch. “We build everything at our plant. This is where we make everything for our two present locations, Atlanta and Nashville,” she says. “There's a ton of closet companies and DIY options out there, but we are still locally owned and locally operated and build everything on-site. a showroom update with even more exciting closet vignettes to get those creative ideas going. “We already have a beautiful showroom full of unique storage concepts, but we want to add a few new, modern touches, including new accessory options, finish colors, lighting choices and glass elements,” Johnson explains.

But style is just the accessory to this well-made outfit. What clients value most about Artisan Custom Closets is their experience with the people. Stacey Wyatt: Since being cramped up inside during the COVID years, buyers have really placed a lot of value on outdoor spaces, especially in the luxury market. There is a disproportionate amount of people who haven't returned to the corporate office and are working in home offices all day long. Having outdoor spaces they can retreat to has become a must!

AND, FOR THE SELLER, WHAT SORT OF ROI CAN THEY EXPECT FROM IMPROVEMENTS TO AN OUTDOOR SPACE?

Whether real or perceived, outdoor spaces add value to a home.  When making a significant investment into an outdoor space, a homeowner will want to consider how long they will live in the home. The longer they are in the home, they not only get the beneficial use of the space, but they will also get the benefit of home appreciation, provided the design choices aren't out of the ordinary.  In the highly desirable Metro Atlanta Area, the appreciation forecast remains strong, meaning any investment (unless extravagant or over the top) should be recouped in 3 to 4 years.

WHAT MARKET TRENDS CAN YOU SHARE WITH OUR READERS?

The Metro Atlanta Market remains solid despite the downward pressure mortgage rates, hovering in the 7%

range, are putting on Buyers. Housing inventory remains historically low, which is keeping home prices on the rise, albeit more moderate than in prior years. If you are considering buying, we highly recommend you lock in a home at today's prices... because the second the mortgage rates make a significant move downward, you will see substantially more buyers enter the market which will drive prices even higher.

WHAT DOES YOUR PERFECT SUNDAY ON THE PATIO LOOK LIKE?

Our ideal Sunday starts with coffee on the patio or around the pool catching some rays and enjoying the morning air. We truly enjoy afternoons in the pool as a family, relaxing or playing games and enjoying a refreshing summer drink. We love to cook on the Blackstone and enjoy dinner at the picnic table on the deck. Then, there's nothing better than to end the night in the hot tub or around the fireplace watching a movie and making s'mores.

TELL US ABOUT THE TWO PICTURED PROJECTS IN TIFFANY PLACE IN ROSWELL.

The covered patio was built for entertaining and a family hangout.  They are very social and have neighbors over often to watch sporting events, grill out, drink, and play backyard games. Likewise, it is their favorite spot to crank up the surround sound speakers and watch their favorite movies. The astroturf has become very popular in higher-end homes to reduce maintenance and allow for better drainage, and offer a place dogs can run and play and not get dirty or tear up the yard.

Azin Khanidokht: I’ve always loved art since I was a little girl. When I had my first child, I had to quit my corporate job and stay at home with him. I started baking when he would nap. It all started from there. I realized how much I enjoyed baking. It was almost like my therapy. I then started exploring chocolate and that’s when I began my strawberry business.

WHAT IS THE MOST UNUSUAL ORDER YOU'VE HAD?

The most challenging orders are the orders for events like baby showers and birthdays since they require more detail. I always want my customers to LOVE my products so I always put 100% into my event packages.

AND, FOR FALL?

All of my floral arrangements start at $150. For fall I offer hot cocoa bombs which sell out every year during Halloween time. We also offer turkey-shaped strawberries and Halloween-themed berries.

Roswell Cultural Arts presents Roswell resident and acclaimed musician, vocalist, and bandleader, Joe Gransden and his 17-piece big band, to Roswell Cultural Arts Center on October 1 at 4:00 PM. Joe Gransden and his Big Band presents Sinatra & Friends, a celebration of swingin’ music that has inspired generations and crossed over into many musical genres. This big band concert is the first in Joe’s new series entitled Jazz Milestones. These concerts present both traditional, new, and rarely performed arrangements, with the purpose of expanding jazz appreciation and education in the North Metro communities. The two additional concerts on December 17, 2023 and April 21, 2024 will be a must see for both the jazz novice and the aficionado. A New York native now living in Roswell, Joe Gransden has performed worldwide and released 14 albums under his own name. Renowned first for the hard bop approach of his trumpet, Gransden’s singing voice has been compared to that of Chet Baker and Frank Sinatra. Gransden’s sound is at once familiar and comforting but also fresh and vibrant, appealing to music lovers of all ages.

Jeans are by far the hardest working wardrobe staple in our closet, so it's important that you have well-fitting jeans hanging in your closet. I always recommend taking an afternoon and trying on every silhouette and brand known to mankind. That's the hard part. It's important to bring in three sizes to the dressing room - the size you think you are, one size up, and one size down. Then walk in them and sit down to see how they feel. Once you find a pair or two that you love, buy them in different washes. Dark rinse denim is dressier, whereas light rinse denim has a casual vibe and can visually add pounds. When you get home, measure the inseam and waist and keep that on file. Then when you need to purchase jeans online, you will have a reference point. Don't be afraid to size up one size, especially with white denim. It's always about the fit, not the number on the tag.

Style has no expiration date, so never, ever think you're too "old" to have fun with fashion. Fashion should be FUN! So keep experimenting with your style, and keep one eye on the trends

that help us stay modern, fresh, and relevant instead of stale and stodgy. That means your hair and makeup as well as clothes. A great haircut and a great stylist are worth their weight in gold. Your buzzwords should be "vibrant" and "youthful," not "younger" or "trying too hard."

Tween Dreams Come True

Local entrepreneur designs shoes for tweens and teens in women’s sizes.

Six years ago, when Janet Ward was shopping for dress shoes for her then 8-year-old daughter Brooke to wear to her school’s Daddy Daughter Dance, she encountered an unexpected problem. While she knew Brooke already wore a women’s size 7 shoe, she did not expect the extremely limited selection in the women’s shoe department that were both appropriate and appealing to Brooke. From there, the idea for QUADSis® was born – a shoe brand specifically for tween girls who wear women’s shoe sizes. Fast forward to 2020, long-time close friend Stephanie Guido was moving back to the Atlanta area with two young girls of her own and together they began the journey to bring this idea to life.

Having worked together right out of college, done many of life’s major milestones together (including each other’s weddings and having children), and having been friends for nearly 20 years, Janet and Stephanie knew they would work well together. Their designs strive for young girls entering their tween and early teen years to find confidence and strength in themselves regardless of their shoe size, which may be bigger than their peers, and to proudly be exactly who they were made to be. Via proprietary design and development, they have custom-designed shoes with a wider base that is perfect to accommodate and provide stability to growing feet. The 1.5” height and 1” pitch of the signature QUADSis® wedge outsole delivers the perfect height balance between heel and toe so these pre-teen/ early teens get comfortable shoes with a bit of height, without

adding undue pressure to the forefoot which can cause discomfort and future foot problems.

THE little BLACK DRESS

Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is the dress in our closet that can be accessorized to fit the event and often is the dress we go back to time and again. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?

Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Chanel transported fashion from tight corsets and bustles to straight-lined silhouettes. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves. Today, people accessorize the black dress to fit any occasion.

We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be.

“We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says.

Although black is a timeless, classic look, that doesn’t mean it goes without personality. You can make it your own style by accessorizing to infuse new life into a dress that you already own.

“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.

If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life. “Take that evening gown you wore years ago to a tailor for a little transformation. Turn it into a high low dress-top that can be worn out with girlfriends or on a date night. Pair the top with leather leggings, ankle boots, a chunky belt and some statement jewelry, and now you have a piece that pushes the boundaries of the little black dress.”
