Celebrate This Summer

I hope this letter finds you laying by the pool or lake and soaking in some much-needed vitamin D or perhaps headed out on an adventure.

As the days grow longer and the weather gets warmer, I find myself eagerly anticipating the arrival of summer. There's just something about this season that brings about a sense of excitement.

Sure, fall has my favorite flavors and scents, winter has its cozy charms, and I can't deny the beauty of spring. But when the summer solstice rolls around, I’m more than ready for the chance to walk the streets of Roswell with friends, sip a cold drink, hang with friends at the lake or ride in my golf cart around the neighborhood and catch a delightful sunset!

The pages in our Summer Fun issue will help you make the most of this season in Roswell and beyond. Check out the African adventure on pg 26.

And even if summer doesn't mean three months of summer vacation anymore (because we're, you know, adults), we can still look forward to an adventure by crossing things off our summer bucket list and curling up with a new favorite beach read. (P.S. teachers, you deserve this much-needed break!).

I have been enjoying learning some golf and pickleball this summer already. I also look forward to exploring new hiking trails, going for bike rides, and even just having a Fourth of July picnic in one of our many parks. Check out our picnic pairing on page 52.  There's something about being in nature that feels so rejuvenating and refreshing.

Just like this season has a way of bringing people together, we hope the pages inside this month’s issue will enrich and enliven your experience of supporting our local partners in Roswell this summer!

Cade graduated highschool in May of 2020. In January of 2021, he was a passenger in a motor accident and was ejected from the vehicle. Miraculously, he survived. Cade was at Shepherds Spinal Center in Atlanta where he spent one week in ICU followed by 9 weeks of inpatient rehab for a spinal cord injury. With amazing design help from Beth Johnson from B Interiors, Sunshine on a Ranney Day renovated Cade’s home to give him an accessible bathroom and dream bedroom. Cade now has the independence he needs to be able to do more things on his own!

Brian Wolfe has been selected as the next Deputy Chief of Administration for the Roswell Fire Department. Chief Wolfe is no stranger to the City of Roswell. He is a 27-year veteran of the Roswell Fire Department, previously serving as a part-time captain, lieutenant, and firefighter/paramedic. He will oversee the Fire Marshall's Office, budgeting, procurement, and logistics and assist with the overall leadership of the department.

Roswell High School announced its top two 2023 seniors: Kate Carpenter, valedictorian, and Lillian Bishop, salutatorian. Mountain Park Elementary School hosted Georgia State Superintendent, Richard Woods, Fulton County Board of Education Vice President Katha Stuart, and Fulton County Schools Zone 5 Superintendent Angela Parham, to visit the school’s construction program, led by teacher Scott Selvig. Also attending were other Georgia Department of Education and FCS district leaders in the career, technical, and agricultural education pathways.

New Turf in Town

The City of Roswell recently marked the completion of one of its first Bond Program projects, the new turf fields at East Roswell Park, with the inaugural “Battle of the Badges” kickball game between Roswell’s Police Department and Fire Department. Also, Roswell was recently awarded $2.2 million from the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget for the creation of a new park, Liberty Square Park Revitalization Project, at the end of the Liberty Square neighborhood.

Motel in the Mountains

The Hotel Cashiers is a thoughtfully restored old-school motel where you can park your car outside your door and settle in for the weekend. Hello, summer!

Walking distance from the four-cornered town center of Cashiers, North Carolina, the hotel is perched on a shady hill, backing up to rolling wooded views, an easy two-and-a-half-hour drive from Roswell. The renovation includes new interiors that lilt toward mid-century modern, with a sheen of comfort (cozy throw blankets) and conveniences (a shared kitchen with extra coffee, breakfast, and snacks).

The hospitality is warm and efficient and the bar is small but inviting, with locals stopping by to taste what’s new in the wine cellar. This season, the Bar at Hotel Cashiers will be hosting several wine-tasting events showcasing seasonal wine menus, a live music series as well as artist and author talks. The summer music roster will be headlined by the July 15 performance by Darren Nicholson, a Grammy-nominated artist performing original Americana music from the mountains of Western North Carolina. Darren is also a 13-time International Bluegrass Music Association winner and has performed at the Grand Ole Opry. The music series will also include monthly jazz sets including “Sip & Swing” jazz Sundays with mimosa and other wine specials.

ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Wesley Hobbs has treasured memories of going on safaris when he was just a preteen and teenager — but he never suspected, at that time, he would be hosting them one day. Having a heart for service, Hobbs began volunteering in high school for a ministry known as Teach Every Nation, a nonprofit with the mission to equip and train under-resourced pastors in more than 140 countries.

Soon enough, he found a distinct calling, hosting enthusiastic guests at a magical place known as the Hippo Lakes Luxury African Safari Lodge — which is owned by and financially supports the mission of Teach Every Nation — and helping others discover and appreciate the beauty of Africa he had known since boyhood. “Eventually, I started selling the Hippo Lakes safaris, and my role grew,” he says.

Today, Hobbs stays busy as the director of sales at Hippo Lakes Luxury African Safari Lodge and the director of development at Teach Every Nation. Situated on “a beautiful lake with resident hippos,” in the words of Hobbs, the Lodge is a surprisingly worry-free place to visit. Daily nonstop flights from Atlanta’s HartsfieldJackson International Airport land in Johannesburg and Cape Town, and no special visas are required to experience South Africa. “Each year, South Africa has more than 350,000 visitors from the United States who come for the safari and Cape Town experiences [except during the pandemic],” Hobbs notes.

And it’s no wonder that they do — a stay at the Hippo Lakes Lodge rivals the most luxurious global hotels. Situated in a prime area known as the Waterberg Biosphere, the Hippo Lakes site is about three and a half hours north of Johannesburg and about 4,000 feet above sea level, hence, there is no risk of malaria and no additional vaccinations are needed. “It is understood

that probably due to the altitude, the mosquitoes do not carry malaria in the Waterberg like they would in the lowveld,” Hobbs explains. “[The altitude] also means temperatures are quite moderate yearround. Unlike other parts of South Africa, humidity is low in the summer, and winter temperatures are moderate.”

After a restful night’s slumber in the accommodations of Hippo Lakes, travelers may choose from a variety of activities. Because the surrounding lakes are filled with catfish, bass and tilapia, fishing is a favorite pastime — but watch out for crocodiles who might eyeball your latest catch. Opportunities abound to meet and talk to the rangers, who are readily available to share friendly beers by the fire and chat about the natural world.

And, of course, the flagship experience of Hippo Lakes — the amazing glamping safaris — are a draw for every guest. From gourmet lunches and dinners to guided drives on the reserve in search of wildlife to add-on excursions such as Elephant Interactions, Helicopter Safaris and more, Hippo Lakes guests have the ultimate setup for adventure.

For Hobbs, sharing the joy of a safari and the beauty of his homeland is the reason every day at Hippo Lakes is rewarding. “Some of my favorite memories are going on safaris with my family,” he says. “For my honeymoon, I took my wife Sophia to Hippo Lakes and Cape Town. I love South Africa, and I love safaris.”

Hollywood in Roswell

Did you see that A-list Hollywood couple in town last week?

After being discreetly welcomed and seated at an intimate corner table, they ordered the sea bass, 10 oz filet and gin martinis. As the evening unfolded, other diners nodded but respected their privacy, all under the spell of the music, a mellow mix of jazz and blues that floated throughout the dining room. After a bottle of Veuve Clicquot, they found the ambiance shifted and a dance party lit up the night. They all stayed until the wee hours, revelers and friends.

That’s the scene at The Gaslight, the Roswell restaurant under new ownership. Ali Hafezi wanted to bring something new to Roswell, offering quality food, unique flavors, and great service with an old Hollywood vibe during dinner service, followed by a lively dance party until closing time (2 a.m.).

This month, The Gaslight will feature dueling pianos on the 12th and 26th (on the second and fourth

Wednesdays of coming months). “While we focus on fine dining, we will also be showing Braves games and other games and events and we invite the community to come in and join the fun,” says Ali who has always had a passion and dream to own a restaurant.

Chef Gilberto brings a fine dining pedigree, with 18 years of experience including Hal’s Steakhouse and Bones Steakhouse. This summer, he’ll be featuring sea bass, served with four jumbo shrimp and a lemon beurre blanc sauce; beef short ribs with pomegranate walnut glaze and basmati saffron rice; and a 10 oz filet, Oscar style.

In the heart of Historic Downtown Roswell, the menu includes prime cuts of steak, fresh seafood, and decadent small plates prepared from scratch. “The perfect accompaniment to inspired cocktails, fine wines, and top-shelf spirits,” promises general manager Rosalie Tortorici.

Open daily for dinner, with brunch and lunch served Friday - Sunday, and until 2 a.m. Tuesday - Sunday.

Holbrook’s Bucket List program sends seniors on adventures

The residents at Holbrook Active Living are never bored. Instead, they spend their days indulging their adventurous spirits, living the moments they have always dreamed of and sharing stories with their friends. In fact, the entire community has a reputation for being what activity director Lisa Cook refers to as “active passionate” – and dispelling any frustrating myths about aging. “Life does not end when you turn 75, 80 or 90,” she insists.

To enrich the community’s pledge to help seniors thrive well into the golden years, the staff started a program known as the Bucket List. Initiated at the end of the pandemic when Lisa was the new activity director, the program inspires residents to be more engaged and active —  and not to think the best days have passed them by. “We brainstormed, and this is what we came up with,” Lisa says. “Then, we asked every resident to fill out a piece of paper with their top 10 bucket list selections.”

The excitement over sharing cherished ideas and dreams boosted the mood of the community, just as Lisa hoped. She got busy creating a

calendar with all the different ideas, and with that, the adventures began.

Bucket List activities run the gamut, but of course, many of them are testing the limits of these seniors with daredevil (but safe and supervised) opportunities. “We’ve done zip lining, white water rafting, and horseback riding,” Lisa says. “One resident swam with the whale sharks at the aquarium. We’ve done private plane rides and skydiving. Three 82-year-old women went skydiving, plus two or three gentlemen in their 70s, and members of the staff!”

Even the participants have been pleasantly surprised at their own willingness to try new things. According to one 70-year-old resident, Talula, “Zip lining was scary at first . . . but then it was awesome.”

“I love the Bucket List experiences at Holbrook,” adds Melanie, an enthusiastic 83-year-old resident who has tried skydiving, zip lining and biplane riding. “I’ve done every one I wanted to, and I look forward to the next one. It’s an important part of Holbrook and what they offer us.”

If you’re reading this and thinking to yourself, there’s no way I would

ever jump out of a plane or swim with whale sharks, that’s OK. Not everything on the calendar is high-risk, assures Lisa.

“We have one resident who wants to walk the Masters course in Augusta, so we’re looking for someone to help with that,” she points out. “One resident wanted to get married — and he did find love! We’ve been to performances, such as at the Fox Theatre, as well.”

While international travel is currently not part of what Lisa offers, she did take eight residents on a fun road trip to Savannah recently, which two of them had listed as a bucket list destination. Other travel opportunities are offered separately, through Holbrook Expeditions.

Of course, at Holbrook, every day feels a little bit like a vacation. The residents enjoy a bevy of amenities and perks right there on site. Lisa describes the Holbrook community as being both “beautiful and home-like,” and points out the number of wonderful opportunities available to every resident on a daily basis.

CHANGING THE PERCEPTION OF AGING

Established in 1997, Second Wind Dreams of Roswell is the first organization to focus on granting dreams for elders living in long-term care in the United States. It is an internationally known nonprofit organization created to change the perception of aging through fulfilling elders’ dreams and offering educational programs to help caregivers understand the physical and mental challenges facing those with dementia.

Second Wind Dreams’ innovative educational programs are inclusive and diverse enough for everyone to participate. The Virtual Dementia Tour® is offered in a variety of versions and settings, to offer all professionals, community, friends, and family members a window into the mind of someone with dementia. Completing this half-day or full-day training will make care partners more aware and empathetic toward those in their care.

The VDT® uses patented sensory tools and instruction based on research conducted by P.K. Beville, M.S., a specialist in geriatrics and the founder of Second Wind Dreams. During a Virtual Dementia Tour experience, trained facilitators guide participants outfitted with patented devices that alter their senses while

they try to complete common everyday tasks and exercises. The Tour® enables care partners to experience the physical and mental challenges those with dementia face and to use the experience to provide better empathic person-centered care. Proceeds from the Virtual Dementia Tour are used to fulfill the mission of Second Wind Dreams to make dreams come true for elders who live in long-term care.

Second Wind Dreams is recognized as the first in the United States to focus on enhancing the quality of life for elders and changing society’s perception of aging by making elder dreams come true. Following in his grandfather’s footsteps, Will Mitchell’s contributions to Atlanta are familiar places and spaces that showcase WR Mitchell’s outstanding commitment to excellence. Isla & Co. Buckhead, Sankranti Indian Kitchen in Dunwoody and Tech Square, and Lee + White in the historic West End all bear the hallmark of WR Mitchell’s quality and style.

For each project, Will is laser-focused on the details but takes the time to ask questions and dig into what the client is looking for. His creative problem-solving and vision are what drives the company. They coordinated the intricate millwork and installation of large marble slabs for Slim Studio. The tiled curved wall at Pepper Boxing is WR Mitchell’s handiwork. Another project involved executing the proper alignment of switches and devices in a Class A office.  Round wood soffits with hidden LED lighting at the LendingPoint office required precision, he says. As did the glass walls and fabric-upholstered booths for conference rooms at TK.

He chose Roswell as his business home and is buoyed by the growth and development of the community. “Roswell is a good place to do business because we live here, so we are directly invested in our community,” says WR Mitchell office manager Elizabeth Thorne. “We want to be part of business expansion that increases the value and function of the community. We have tackled jobs as small as 250 square feet and as large as 25,000 square feet, and we have entered into the food stall environment at Lee + White in West Atlanta.”

Will lives in Roswell with his wife, Karey, and kids, Liam (8), Rylin (5) and Landyn (3), where they are thoroughly entrenched in the community. Will and his son Liam recently placed 3rd in a parent/child tournament. They enjoy golfing at Settindown Creek in Roswell and hanging out at the Crabapple Market, with a green space that the kids love. The Alpharetta Farmers Market, Avalon, Woodstock playground and Reformation Brewery top the family’s list of favorite places, and for dining, Will shares his top spots, “We like to eat at Peach and the Pork Chop and Zest in Roswell.”

For special times with your favorite people, nothing says warm weather fun like a picnic. Follow these tips and tried-and-true recipes for preparation ideas and tasty drink pairings to go with a flavor-filled, all-in-one bowl meal.

Ambiance:

Throw pillows are a must.  Pull them from your couches or invest in outdoor pillows that can be used repeatedly.  A large throw is also essential to protect from moist ground and grass stains.  Bring your favorite tunes with one of the many available portable speakers or unplug and enjoy the sounds of nature. Cut flowers add a wow factor.

Gear:

You don’t have to own a picnic basket to have a picnic. But if you do bring a basket, make sure to have some way to chill your perishables and drinks. Reusable silverware, plastic wine or drink cups, and plates often come with a picnic basket set, but can also be purchased separately. Keeping it elegant, but easy (and cool) is the key!

Accompaniments:

A cheese plate with fruit is the perfect start to your picnic fare. As with the cheese, your drink selections should coordinate with the main dish. For salads, pair accoutrements with the dressing in mind. This lemony herb vinaigrette dressing goes well with smooth cheeses and tart beverages such as lemonade, prosecco, or sauvignon blanc.

Lemon Herb Mediterranean Grilled Chicken Salad

ingredients:

MARINADE/DRESSING

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• juice of 1 lemon

• 2 tablespoons water

• 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

• 2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley

• 2 teaspoons dried basil

• 2 teaspoons garlic, minced

• 1 teaspoon dried oregano

• 1 teaspoon salt

• cracked pepper, to taste

• 1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breasts, trimmed

SALAD:

• 4 cups romaine lettuce leaves, washed and dried

• 1 large cucumber diced

• 2 Roma tomatoes diced

• 1 red onion sliced

• 1 avocado sliced

• 1/2 cup pitted Kalamata olives (optional)

• lemon wedges to serve

• 1/2 cup feta cheese

instructions:

1. Whisk together all the marinade/dressing ingredients in a large jug. Pour out half of the marinade into a large, shallow dish. Refrigerate the remaining marinade to use as the dressing later.

2. Add the chicken to the marinade in the bowl. Marinate chicken for 15-30 minutes (or up to two hours in the refrigerator if time allows). While waiting for the chicken, prepare all the salad ingredients and mix in a large salad bowl.

3. Once chicken is ready, heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a grill pan or a grill plate over medium-high heat. Grill chicken on both sides until browned and completely cooked through.

4. Allow chicken to rest for 5 minutes and slice.  Arrange over salad. Just before eating, drizzle salad with the remaining untouched dressing. Serve with lemon wedges.

Summer Sippin’ Is Back

Summer Sippin’, Roswell’s annual beverage competition and promotion, returns for its 8th year this summer. There are 61 establishments participating and each one is tasked to create a special summer-inspired drink. This is the largest Summer Sippin’ event to date.

During the two-month event, patrons are encouraged to order sips from participating establishments and rate them on the Summer Sippin’ app or on SummerSippin. com. At the conclusion of the event, one alcoholic and one non-alcoholic beverage will win the title of "Best Sip in Roswell". Meet Ed Klaas

assembled on the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entering World War I, from the same dais that President Woodrow Wilson spoke a century earlier. Later that day, he delivered similar remarks, this time in Spanish, at another nearby national cemetery. Last summer, in partnership with the National Park Service and the Trust for the National Mall, Ed spoke and led the program from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. on its 100th anniversary. This month he will again lead the annual children’s program and address the group at the Washington Monument on the National Mall, “America’s front yard.”

Ed is also a published author. His second book is due out next month and will be available in hardcover, paperback, e-book, and audio editions. It is a hopeful and inspirational profile of fifty famous people who attempted suicide, but who survived and went on to live extraordinarily successful lives. He hopes it will be a useful tool to help anyone dealing with suicidal thoughts or issues. Ed chose this subject because of his own challenges with depression and an unsuccessful suicide attempt in the midst of the darkest period of his life. “Even when it seems as if we are on top of the world, life can change in an instant and we must always do what we can to be prepared to deal with those changes. Allow others to help you when you are in need, but never stop using your gifts to serve others,” says Klaas. This book further demonstrates Ed’s commitment to going above and beyond to help others.

The Roswell Woman’s Club (RWC) is excited to announce a donation of more than $152,000 in educational scholarships, teacher grants and nonprofit grants at its annual gift disbursement and awards ceremony at Jeffords Hall.

The Roswell Woman’s Club awarded 23 scholarship recipients, 32 teacher grants and 27 nonprofits thanks to the club’s annual fundraising efforts during the 2022-2023 year, which included BOO Y’ALL Scarecrows, Sip & Stroll at BOO Y’ALL, and the Spring Home & Garden Tour.

Shirley Hughes is an artist. And a baker. And a magic maker.

Her desserts and custom cakes are fantastical, with swirls of edible rice paper flourishes reaching past the buttercream-painted frosting. Shirley creates classic designs with techniques she has honed over decades as a specialty baker, caterer and master of all things sugar from her throne at her kitchen and coffee shop, Sweet Cheats.

She created 850 cookies with a company logo for an important celebration. She personally brings breakfast pastries, tea cakes and custom cakes to Atlanta’s hottest celebs and Bravo stars and loves a challenge.

A dessert bar for a home dinner party might include a rainbow of sweet macarons made that morning, whimsical carrot cake pops, delicate cake bites, sculptural cupcakes, shortbread bars and cookies frosted with a scattering of edible flowers, cheesecakes and brownies, pies and cruffles (truffle pops).
