Celebrating Women This May

I don’t know about you but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life more rich and beautiful. Our sisters, mothers and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives.

And of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.

While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this roleconnecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to Roswell and beyond.

They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.

The Women Behind Aura Salon and Spa

Since Aura Salon and Spa began over 15 years ago it has been graced by some amazing and talented women, including the powerhouse in charge of it all, Tara Miller. When she opened the first location of Aura back in 2007 Tara knew she wanted to create a passionate team that found and inspired beauty in others; now set in their Sandy Springs location she focuses on helping stylists achieve their goals and following their dreams behind the chair.

In 2009 Sara Caroline started working with Aura Salon and if you ask Tara, she will tell you she knew right away they would be business partners someday, and she was right. And it doesn’t stop there, in March 2023 Aura started their new clothing and beauty boutique within the salon which highlights various women-owned business and local artists/purveyors. You will find affordable and fashionable clothing pieces as well as beauty and wellness products that have been chosen with purpose to support worthy businesses and match the energy of our staff and clientele.

Jenifer Goldin is a writer, an audiologist specializing in pediatric cochlear implants, and a mom. Centennial High School German teacher Ashley McCarty was awarded Teacher of the Year by the American Association of Teachers of German in Georgia. Roswell High School students in 3DE (an experiential engineering learning program) hosted a panel discussion with business professionals from Arby's and parent company Inspire Brands for their Cultural Agility case challenge. The project received an honorable mention in the ninth grade National Case Challenge Championship.

These are Chaz Easterly’s tenets, a rock-solid foundation of the new life she’s carved out for herself after a recent challenging divorce and harrowing health journey.

The creative force and founder of the Linen & Flax brand based here in Roswell, she leans heavily into her faith which buoyed her through rough waters and continues to power her every move, both personally and professionally.

It was nearly six years ago that she needed to find a job to contribute to the family budget. Any job. After having doors shut in her face time and time again, she drove down Canton Street and prayed for inspiration and help. Chaz walked into the nearby Pottery Barn clutching a photo of her children and landed herself a job. In the three years that followed, she learned the business of retail and sales and built on her passion for interior design.

In 2015, she held a one-day Designer Open House in her home. “For the second show, I added goods I curated from antique markets and other finds. I met with a furniture vendor to build a custom line of furniture, and sold everything in the house. Women were fighting in the foyer over art,” says Chaz, a mother of three and Roswell resident of 14 years.

In 2015, she found herself again on Canton Street and saw a “for lease - commercial” sign in front of a small white bungalow. A month later and countless hours of sweat equity from friends and neighbors, Linen & Flax Home opened its doors, with more than 500 people showing up on day one. “Linen & Flax was created to make life more beautiful,” says Chaz. “I credit the power of social media, namely Instagram. We needed a furniture store in Roswell, and people showed up. They always show up.”

Now the brand has a cohesive worldwide presence, an apparel store across the street and a larger headquarters with a design studio, fulfillment center and e-commerce team offices. The online presence exploded during the Covid-19 pandemic

and has shoppers from coast to coast. While design was the initial driving force of the brand, now all segments are performing equally as strong. Most recently, Chaz added a leisure line, featuring destinations she loves including a stunning home in Rosemary Beach, Florida. “It’s a Linen & Flax experience. My heart and soul are in that house,” says Chaz of the vacation rental she decorated that is booked solid. Everything in the home has a QR code tag for seamless shopping. “Part of creating a beautiful life is traveling with your family. This is everyone’s summer house.”

And, by “everyone,” she means her friends, family and extended family of nearly 85,000 followers on Instagram. “I engage with them (followers) every day. They want to know where I’m going, what I’m wearing and what’s happening in my life. I want to know them, too, and I respond to every DM.”

She is non-stop. She credits her family for supporting her and other like-minded creative entrepreneurs for inspiring her. “I love to create and find what’s missing, then build it. I surround myself with people who are smarter than I am. I dream it, but they make it happen. I’m a dreamer and schemer.”

Last year, with a goal to engage directly with followers, nourish friendships and explore the vision for the Linen & Flax brand, she held a live event with hundreds of attendees. In March, the second annual event sold out in a day, with 220 people sharing their journeys. “I found the conversations so meaningful and had the opportunity to encourage people in their faith and inspire them to put themselves on the list… first on the list!” More than half of those gathered traveled from out of state.

Now, her team is 45 people strong and she sources new employees from her pool of Instagram brand ambassadors and other creatives she follows on social media. “They are my vision carriers. They know me and want to be a part of the brand. They know I am a mom who started something out of nothing. And that I am nothing without my faith or friends.”

It was her friends who held her up during the last two challenging years.

“I was in the middle of a divorce and overweight. I started walking to get out of the house so the kids wouldn’t see me crying,” Chaz shares. That practice turned into fuel for a new, more mindful life, with friends helping to pull her out of her black hole and a posse of women professionals (a lawyer, therapist and finance manager) who held her hand and had her back. These women all attended her recent LIVE event.

“I learned, if you’re going through a difficult season, put yourself on the top of the list. Now, everyone on my team has locked into a more mindful life. Walking and prayer changed everything,” says Chaz.

Building Valuable Habits

Habitat for Humanity North Central Georgia is powered by volunteers and their Women Build events provide the opportunity for women to take a proactive step in serving their communities.

Women Build opportunities are available across the U.S. Any woman who wants to learn how to build and construct a home is invited to join. No experience is necessary. Volunteers work under the guidance of construction professionals, and also alongside other volunteers and future Habitat homeowners. Whether you are learning new skills or simply adding a few to your tool belt, this is a rewarding experience for all involved and improves the community that you share.

Women Build is also a terrific way to involve your friends and family of all ages in crucial work with a lasting impact. Women helping women sends a positive and powerful message. You can also come alone, and make new friends. The atmosphere is collaborative and friendly.

Recently, students from Roswell pitched in. We asked Claire Kovich, a student at Blessed Trinity High School about her experience.

"Habitat means so much to me! I love doing service work, so I jumped at the opportunity to be part of this amazing build! Participating in builds has given me the opportunity to meet so many amazing new people, especially the crew leaders. Everyone is super kind, welcoming, and willing to do whatever it takes to create a beautiful home for whoever is in need. Working alongside the homeowner while building the second-floor walls and cleaning up the yard for landscaping gave the work such a personal aspect. I truly enjoyed getting to help the Coulibaly family!"

Even with all the hard work it took for Angela Medley to make her name as a realtor in Roswell, her family has always remained her number one priority. That, and giving back to the community. Angela, a Georgia Tech graduate, received a master's degree in instructional technology from Kennesaw University. Before becoming a real estate agent, she spent eight years in the education sector for the largest virtual school in the state. After years sitting behind a computer, she wanted to be out with people and starting exploring a career change. Her husband encouraged her to get into real estate because it would allow her to be around people and nurture her passion for buying and selling homes. It was a perfect fit, and she continues to succeed by using her community relationships, altruistic nature, and caring approach to clients. As Angela prepares for another hot spring real estate market. she sits down with Roswell City Lifestyle to share her journey to success, her passion for mentoring, and how her husband and three children have always inspired her.

RCL: YOUR APPROACH TO REAL ESTATE IS DIFFERENT. WHAT DO YOU THINK SETS YOU APART?

AM: I offer exceptional service and attention to detail. Moving is very stressful, so I offer a peaceful approach that serves as an anchor in a time of chaos. I take anything I can off of my client's plates so they have less to worry about. And I stay connected with them forever so that they can call on me for anything.

RCL: PHILANTHROPY IS SO IMPORTANT TO YOU? WHAT ARE YOUR PRIORITIES FOR GIVING BACK?

AM: I'm passionate about the Children Development Academy because of its high-quality childcare for lower-income families. Years ago, I needed childcare to get my degree. Because of the ability to have quality childcare, that path led me to where I am today. I am active at Roswell United Methodist and serve on various charity boards. I want to give back to my community because it has given me a wonderful place to raise my family.

RCL: TELL US ABOUT YOUR PASSION FOR MENTORING.

AM: My next goal is to spread that passion into forming a team of dedicated REALTORS who will serve their communities with radical service to others. And you might find me in a new location on Canton Street soon!

RCL: TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR SECRETS FOR HAVING IT ALL.

AM: I have three children, Savannah (23), Nathan (21), and Jack (16). My greatest mission is to serve my family and ensure my children are prepared to go out into the world to grow and nurture their community. I do this by prioritizing my obligations and surrounding myself with people who encourage me to remain balanced. I make my work events with things my family likes to do. And I don't do it alone. I rely on my four assistants to help with the workload. If I reached the top of my earning potential, but didn't have my family by my side, I would consider that a loss. My husband is also my biggest fan. His support allows me to do more than I ever thought possible.

Full Circle: “In 1996, I was driving around looking for a wedding venue,” she says. “I stumbled upon Canton Street and it was love at first sight. Roswell has had my heart ever since.” As an active community member, she says that Roswell sets the standard for philanthropic work.

“There are so many amazing community members.”

MY WONDERFUL WINDING ROAD TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP

After graduating from college with a public relations degree, I took an entry-level position with a multi-family developer/builder and surprisingly fell in love with land development and construction. Fast-forward 17 years, and I am still in the industry. During the economic collapse of 2008, my story was like many. I was laid off from my position as a marketing manager. Over the next several years, I held both marketing and business development roles within the construction industry. I also learned that I didn’t want my future to remain in the hands of others.

The desire to have creative freedom, along with more flexibility and independence, found its way to the forefront of my professional goals. I decided to take the big risk of going out on my own in 2014. That is when my marketing consulting firm, MKT Collaborative, was born. Starting a business is a gutsy move, and while there were days in those first six months that I questioned my decision, I would absolutely do it all over again! Nine years later, our marketing firm is proudly 100% referral based with year-over-year growth driven by our strong network of industry relationships.

Just as success seemed to be on autopilot with MKT, my husband Tim had this idea of developing an elevated-dining brewpub restaurant focused on good food and, of course, music. His passion fed the momentum and in 2017, we opened From the Earth Brewing Company in East Roswell. And, because we like to keep as many plates in the air as possible (apparently!), we opened Bask Steakhouse three months ago.

figure out how to turn that into something that is your own. Believe in yourself, stay true to your beliefs, and go in with full understanding that the road will be challenging, but the reward of hustling for yourself and experiencing success makes it all worth it.

WHAT DOES A MOTHER WITH 37 CHILDREN DO ON MOTHER'S DAY?

Jenna Aronowitz, the co-owner of 1920 Tavern, will be celebrating Mother’s Day with nearly all 37 of her children. That’s her two sons, Dylan and Aidan, along with her 35 employees at the restaurant. “They are all my family and we look out for each other,” says Jenna. “We stuck by one another during the pandemic and they are like my kids.”  And, since Mother’s Day is the restaurant’s second busiest day (next to New Year’s Eve), she and her husband Howard and their sons will be at the restaurant serving brunch and welcoming guests. “It will be all hands on deck,” says Jenna.

She and Howard opened the restaurant in 2015 after 20 years of owning and managing restaurants. They both loved fine dining, but she was a vegetarian and he was a meat and potatoes guy. They were at a loss for a restaurant around metro Atlanta that satisfied them. After searching for a restaurant home for some five years, a phone call on a whim landed them the charming space that inspires them to this day. “It was truly by the grace of God that we were in the right place at the right time,” says Jenna. “I spend more time here than at my home.”

But, to Jenna, 1920 Tavern is her home. She and her team strive to welcome guests with genuine warmth, engage with them and ultimately create Roswell’s own “Cheers.” On any given night at 1920 Tavern, Jenna says 70 percent of diners are regulars and 30 percent are first-timers. “And, for most restaurants, it’s the opposite.”

Growing up with a younger brother with autism taught Dr. Jordan Blankenship-Sniker not only to be compassionate, but also how to navigate a health system that more easily benefits neuro-typical patients. Now, as a dentist and owner of Market Place Dentistry in Roswell, she has created a practice that beautifully serves people on the spectrum, as well as patients who appreciate and rely on a more comfortable dental visit.

Her office has noise-cancelling headphones and weighted blankets. “It helps people feel comfortable and lets them know where their body is. I’m also willing to try new things to help patients.”

She has done dental cleaning on the couch in the lobby and has trained her staff to presume confidence, be acutely aware of sensory issues, and make the appointment a welcoming experience. She has an all-female practice, with women of all ages in the office. “We are all trying to help one another succeed and it’s very special,” says Dr. Blankenship.

She purchased the practice in March of 2021, three weeks after giving birth to their second daughter. “It was a great opportunity. My husband has been so supportive, letting me get sleep and helping in every way.”

Growing up in a small town that supported its local businesses, she fell in love with Roswell for its downtown and cohesive community. She renovated the office building, which resembles a favorite friend’s home, with a crisp exterior with new shutters and lovely updated interior. Not like any other dentist office I’ve ever seen! “I updated all the technology and have a vision to build a completely sensory friendly operatory for our special needs patients.”

Dr. Blankenship-Sniker also helped to build and open ReClif in Peachtree Corners, a fitness-based therapy center for adults and children with autism and other disabilities.

This means during the ebbs and flows, you must also remain a believer. Then there’s the added pressure of owning a home care business. You must remain selfless, patient, and empathetic with not only the clients we serve, but the staff who serves them as well.

CL: HOW DO YOU DESTRESS, FIND YOUR ZEN, AND RELAX AT THE END OF A BUSY DAY?

SG: I created a very relaxing atmosphere in my bedroom with aromatic candles and low lights. It is my safe space. So when I get home, I head upstairs, light candles, turn on jazz music, and prepare to relax for the night.

CL: WHAT ARE YOUR PET PEEVES IN THE BUSINESS WORKPLACE?

SG: Mediocrity. Average performance. I am high energy most days and I have very high expectations. I tell everyone who comes to work for Senior911, if you are looking for just another agency, it will not work. I will not tolerate a subpar work ethic. Thankfully, my office staff understands this and shares my sentiments.

CL: HOW WILL YOU BE SPENDING MOTHER’S DAY THIS YEAR?

SG: I am not sure of the details yet but most certainly, relaxing somewhere. Hopefully somewhere warm with beautiful blue waters.

Learn of yourself and the creations around you. Take time to stop and smell the roses.  And this is a hard-learned lesson: do not let other people define you to you.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO VISIT, DINE, WALK, AND SOCIALIZE IN ROSWELL?

I've been a Brookwood Grill faithful for 27 years. I love the Roswell Mill Covered Bridge. Hearing the river

rush underneath clears my head. Being that I'm not near the ocean --my Zen. I wish to move seaside. The Roswell Cultural Arts Center, the Adult Recreation Center are great places for activities and hosting events. The renovated Roswell Library on Norcross Street is wonderful! And, I need to take a weekend or two and saunter down Canton Street  anew, to check out all the restaurants, shops, and galleries. [And to see if there are any good single men around!] Also, I was one to nudge the city to get the Aquatic Center.

WHAT THREE THINGS CAN WOMEN DO THIS MONTH TO BUILD A HEALTHIER LIFE?

Be well read . Travel. Read. Educate yourself, not only about health but also about the world! Keep the brain moving!

Tend that body. Be your best steward for yourself. Get regular checkups on schedule. Don't smoke!

Sweat that head! Exercise is so good for your health. It can stave off arthritis, cancers, diabetes, and more. 150 minutes per week. It can be broken up into short walks a few times a day, a few days a week, etc.

Spending time with friends can fill a busy women's cup (or wine glass). Along with the tried-and-true book club meeting, birthday celebration, and bridal or baby shower, some unique get-together ideas will make your extraordinary women friends feel engaged, energized, and entertained in your home.

For the hostess, the first thing to consider is comfort. Nothing makes a group of women relax more than cozy seating full of pillows, soft music, fresh-cut flowers, and the glow of well-placed candles. For an added respite into relaxation, arrange blankets on the couches or outdoor seating for those nights when the air turns crisp. Sitting close to friends and sharing a throw, beverages, good food, and conversation is an excellent friendship-building recipe.

A masterful hostess will do her best to roam the party to refill beverages and create conversations between guests. Part of the joy of hosting people is watching the budding and deepening of friendships. Topics to think of ahead of time are:

• Who grew up in the same part of the state, country, or world?

• Do any of the guests enjoy the same hobbies?

up tomatoes, mint, or whatever you have in surplus for your guests to take as they leave.

3. Spa Day: Order plush robes and spend the day getting pampered for a special occasion with a close group of friends. Many massage therapists, estheticians, and make-up artists will happily offer services at your home.

I am fortunate to have an amazing team that is excited to come to work and filled with so much creativity and drive to try new and innovative things. My biggest pet peeves when it comes to the workplace are lack of communication and missing deadlines.

If it were up to me I would love to have brunch somewhere on Canton Street and spend the afternoon at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens and then have my hubby handle bedtime for the kids so I can get some zen time!

The Good Life at Vitality

Rosemary Glenn is 97. But, you’d never know it.

She is engaged and positive, loving life at Vitality Living. She gets to see her daughter Anita Glenn nearly every day. Anita is the sales director at Vitality. And the circle grows, as Anita’s identical twin sister’s mother-in-law also lives at Vitality. “It’s truly a family affair here at Vitality,” says Elaine Harris, business development director at Vitality Living Milton. “ Not only with these true family members but with all our residents and staff. Everyone is completely invested in the success of Vitality. That generates a warmth, energy and loving environment that is second-tonone in the senior industry.”

Conveniently located north of Alpharetta in Milton, they offer assisted living and memory care with options for completely independent residents. “We are senior

apartments with amazing 24-hour care, where all caregivers are Vitality employees, and of course with the best engagement and food,” says Elaine.

Anita is a 20-year veteran of the senior industry. “I have never worked for a company as good as Vitality - one that provides such high-quality services and offers such value to our residents and their families.” Her mother Rosemary earned her master’s degree in the 1940s and is a retired storyteller and puppeteer who often performs for memory care residents.

We heard from a daughter whose mother recently moved to Vitality’s Memory Care. She says, “The care she has received so far has been excellent. The director of nursing was proactive in getting my mother's medications adjusted. The director of the memory care unit has been great in making my mom feel welcome.”

Rhonda Allenson's father moved to Vitality with a plan to return home in a month. “At the end of the month, much to my family’s surprise, he announced he did not want to return home,” says Rhonda. “He has become engaged in the community and loves the residents and staff, referring to them as ‘his people’.”
