Hello to love in all shapes and sizes, Welcome to the February issue of Roswell City Lifestyle. At this time of year, I am always torn. I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? I usually land somewhere in between. We hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in your local community. While we teeter between the chill of winter and the excitement of spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life and support local businesses and our partners gathered here in the magazine and our amazing community. “Love local” means your local businesses, those in your community - but it also means loving what is near. GIVING GR ACE In 2012, Christy Betz, a volunteer with Remerge, had a simple but profound idea: “What if I rallied my friends and friends-of-friends to respond directly to the needs of my friends in the Remerge community?” Rather than fundraising for a broad social challenge, such as ending homelessness, Christy started to ask her

Meet Christy Betz friends to help a particular friend of hers with an immediate, solvable need. One by one, needs of the Remerge community were being met, while another community was becoming more familiar with the stories and challenges facing those in less-resourced environments than their own. From this spark, Giving Grace was born, and to this day personal connection and personal response remain the center-piece of Giving Grace. Last year, the project benefited 379 people financially, including a family living in their car who were then able to find permanent housing and pay their first month’s rent and deposit. A single father needed help with housing and was able to move his son out of foster care into their new home, thanks to Giving Grace. Another neighbor, a single mom, depended on her car for transportation to work (a location not served by public transportation). Giving Grace found her a vehicle so she could continue providing for her family.

Giving Grace donations are delivered directly to families in need.

The beach cowboy Brian Kelley and his wife Brittney Kelley go boldly forward Singer-songwriter Brian Kelley is powered by three forces: his love for his wife Brittney, his four German shepherds and music. Sure, there’s more to this former Florida Georgia Line band member, like spending time with friends and family at his homes in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida and Nashville; launching a retail brand, Tribe Kelley, with Brittney; and growing their NFT collection, Chill Cowboy Country Club. But it’s songwriting that fuels him most of all. “To this day, I wake up excited about songs — from a friend, from another artist. Songs are life,” says Kelley, who is working on his second solo album from his studios in both Florida and Nashville. Fans love this Florida-born-and-bred beach cowboy, but he’s exploring different creative spaces for this record, telling new stories and finding joy from collaborations that are inspiring to him. Late last year, he hunkered down with some of his favorite musicians and fellow songwriters — who share the same passion for ideas, words and melodies — to dig deeper during songwriting retreats, which proved to be fruitful and fun.

“Everyone there was a great singer and artist, and we did three different sessions of songwriting camps in Nashville. I wanted to put myself through the wringer, and see what I could find,” he says. “There’s magic to be made in creative places. While many shut down over the holidays, I wanted to make a little hay while the sun was still shining.” One week, he wrote during two sessions a day, every day, reminiscent of his earlier career. “The hustle and heart are still inside of me, and to connect with the songwriter community continuously feels great,” he says. They would riff off one another, recording tracks, honoring every line and story. “It’s a really cool connection, when you’re on the same page and share the same connection, trying to uncover what that room on that day needs from you. Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes it’s harder. We would write in the living room, have a fire going, and I was really grateful to have the opportunity,” he shares.

Not being strangers to hard work, he and Brittney renovated a historic home in Grayton Beach for a retail boutique, Tribe Kelley Surf Post, plus a studio upstairs and green event space complete with a tiki hut in back, where they hosted nearly 30 live shows last year. Country music singer-songwriter Chase Rice did a “sound check” last summer, and Kelley performed favorites as well as new songs, sometimes just days old. “I wanted to be in my own lane and create an

intimate fan experience in our own world and invite people into that,” he says. “It was important for me to be home and writing. It changes the course of the record I’m making.” Brittney is committed to the brand they started eight years ago. “We wrote the blueprint during our first year of marriage, launching it on our first wedding anniversary,” she says. Her apparel and accessories are sourced from local and USA makers, something she is passionate about. From her studio upstairs at Tribe Kelley Surf Post, she is also driving their NFT collection, Chill Cowboy Country Club, a members-only club. “Web3 is coming up quickly on us, and we want to be on the forefront of this technology. We love helping to educate those who are new coming into the space, and we want to introduce country music and country music fans to it while making our mark in the community,” she says. When my kids were little, we would address valentines to classmates, deliver flowers to neighbors and decorate the house with hearts and snowflakes (cut from white coffee filters). For dinner, I would make their favorite meal: dessert! Why not? I'd melt chocolate (the good stuff) and let them line up their dippers. They thought dessert for dinner was magical. Of course, I'd fed them a protein-packed after-school snack and served "dinner" early so they could get their sugar wiggles out before bed. Delightful! Happy Valentine's Day!

CHOCOLATE FONDUE • 2 cups heavy cream • 1 pound premium semisweet chocolate (recommended: Lindt or Callebaut) • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract • 1 tablespoon brandy • Strawberries, bananas, pineapple, brownies, waffles, marshmallows, walnuts, Oreos, pound cake, pretzels or any other dipping item of your choice! Get creative! 1. Put approximately four inches of water in a saucepan and bring to a slow boil. Place a mixing bowl on top and pour in the heavy cream. Let heat. Or, use a double boiler. Meanwhile, break up or chop the chocolate into small pieces. When the cream feels hot to the touch, add chocolate and whisk until smooth. Whisk in vanilla and brandy (optional). 2. Pour into the fondue pot and light the handy fuel underneath. Keep the flame low as not to burn the fondue. Arrange dippers on a platter and enjoy. For the grown-ups, a spiked chocolate drink from our friend, Martha Stewart.

THE SPIKED JONES • • • • • • •

1/2 cup milk 1 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup whole coffee beans 2 ounces semisweet chocolate (61% Valrhona), chopped 2 tablespoons Kahlua 1 teaspoon confectioner's sugar 1 tablespoon dark chocolate-covered coffee beans, chopped

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, 1/2 cup cream, and whole coffee beans. Bring to a simmer, turn off heat, cover, and steep beans for 1 hour. Strain liquid and return to saucepan; discard beans. Bring the milk-and-cream mixture back to a simmer, add chocolate, and whisk until incorporated. Remove from heat; whisk in Kahlua. Whip remaining 1/2 cup cream and the confectioners' sugar until soft peaks form. Divide the hot chocolate between 2 cups and garnish each portion with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkling of chopped chocolate-covered coffee beans.

Immeasurable Most people can’t begin to understand the challenges parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities face on a day-to-day basis, nor would they experience the depth of fear that comes with worrying about what will happen to their child once they are no longer around to take care of them. Such is the case for mother, advocate, and founder of Two Sparrows Village, Jennifer Conforti. She tells us, “Hundreds of thousands of families, in this country alone, feel the weight of this and more on a daily basis.” Jennifer prayed without ceasing for God’s guidance. She asked, “Lord, I feel like an airplane circling Hartsfield Jackson. Will you please light up my runway? I don’t know where to land. I don’t know where to go. Tell me what to do.” In January 2017, the seed was planted and Jennifer was well prepared with perseverance and the relational equity to nurture and bring to fruition a newly built community for adults with disabilities: Two Sparrows Village. She says, “You can create what you imagine when people with the right skills, experiences, and heart come together with a shared vision.” Nestled right in the middle of Christian City’s 500-acre campus is the place where

adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities call home and experience the supportive, life-enhancing benefits of community. The first Two Sparrows Village cottage is made possible through a partnership with Christian City, a not-for-profit organization that provides vibrant living, life-changing hope, and a community of loving friends. Jennifer is overwhelmed with gratitude when she reflects on the support for her vision. “Christian City is truly a dream come true for community living.” She continues, “Not one person in any municipality here told me ‘no'. It was encouraging for me to be in a community where people really did want to help.” November 1, 2022, was the five-year anniversary of Two Sparrows Village. Currently, there are four high-functioning residents living independently in the Two Sparrows Village cottage, and leadership is well aware of how great the need is. According to the organization’s Executive Director, Jacque Thornton, “We’ve got to get more inventory. There are 38 on the waiting list. We have a goal to expand to have at least 16 units on the Christian City campus by 2024.” In addition, the organization is working towards making housing available not only to those CONTINUED >

who are high functioning on the autism and IDD spectrums, but to also begin to develop where they have personal care and even full care levels. A continuum of care best describes the Two Sparrows Village model at Christian City. Residents can go from one stage of care to another, in a life plan continuum. Jacque explains, “Live here lifelong — reach age 55 and income eligible, or as they age and their health requires a different level of care, a resident can apply to move into other areas of the campus and never have to leave their community.” The long-term vision for the organization is to have a Two Sparrows Village, in partnership with retirement communities that have every level of care, within 200 miles of every major city in the United States. Both Jennifer and Jacque are like-minded and like-hearted in their belief that, “We can have the things we set our minds and hearts to.” It takes audacious faith to step out and proclaim a goal of this size. Jennifer shares openly, “My faith was extremely tested for so long, but it never left me and God never let go of me, and thankfully I never let go of Him.” While Jacque Thornton is part of the magic that happens at Two Sparrows Village, she is joined by two other amazing professionals. Lora Daniels, the Program Director, and Dwon Johnson who serves as the Resident Concierge. Jennifer regards this talented team as outstanding in their respective areas of expertise, as well as trustworthy and loving. Jennifer’s daughter Abby was diagnosed with a congenital brain defect at the age of two and then a year later with severe autism. Jennifer feels encouraged. “I can see Abby living independently, with round-the-clock care, in a home-health kind of situation, but in the right space with the right people and really capable staff who know how to work with kids like Abby. That gives me great hope and immeasurable peace of mind.” The goal at Two Sparrows Village is for residents to grow beyond what they’ve done in their home environment with their parents, and learn how to improve and live independently. There are a myriad of ways to get involved with Two Sparrows Village. The emphasis is on donations and the need for people to come alongside them to help with the building process. Their list of activities and community engagement opportunities can be found on their website at TwoSparrowsVillage.org. Jacque’s son is on the autism spectrum and the ADD spectrum. “I just want people to make space for someone who’s different. I don’t care what that difference is. Make space and time and watch your life change.” “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them falls to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” - Matthew 10:29-31 Jennifer wants every resident to know that they are worth more than many sparrows.

Andrew Lucas is a self-proclaimed “numbers guy,” but he is so much more than that. For decades he ascended the corporate ladder, most recently serving as the vice president of accounting for a multi-billion-dollar global finance company. Then, he became one of the first patients in Georgia to contract the COVID-19 virus. On March 4, 2020, Andrew began experiencing symptoms. He was put on oxygen and remained debilitatingly sick for 42 days at home. After recovery, it was discovered the illness had damaged his lungs, heart and brain. He went from working over 100 hours a week and traveling often, to struggling to stay awake for six to eight hours a day. “The fatigue, it overwhelmed me — the vestibular issues, the neurological issues,” he said. “It changed everything.” Between fighting with insurance and doctors not knowing what was going on, returning to normalcy

felt impossible. He credits his wife Frances, his family and doctors for saving his life. But the changes to his physical health paled in comparison to the mental ones. “The illness made me look inside myself and figure out how to best take care of my family,” Andrew said. He began researching an idea he had 15 years prior — to own a laundromat as passive income. “But as my wife says, I don’t do anything passively.” In October 2020, they purchased a laundromat in Roswell, and the location “was a no-brainer.” Beyond the demographics, Andrew was attracted to the sense of community and the support for local businesses. Tumble & Dry is not your mother’s laundromat. Between app-driven delivery, pickup, drop-off, and coin laundry, they are able to reach people at different life cycles — pun intended. “Coming into the laundromat, our attendants greet everybody. We want everyone to feel warm, secure, included and safe. We ask about their kids, about their jobs.” Whether it's a coin or drop-off customer, Andrew finds joy in forming relationships with customers and making the chore of laundry feel more like a luxury. Last year, while Andrew was knee-deep and hands-on in the laundry business, a customer named Sarah called with a question about delivery. Naturally, the conversation turned to family and there were several coincidences, including Sarah’s husband named Andrew and both having a son with autism — both named Drew. Between Andrew’s back-of-house and accounting skills,

and Sarah’s sales and marketing skills, they decided to become business partners. “We provide a service. We deliver laundry, but what we really provide is time,” Andrew said. “The pandemic changed the way we do things. You can be in a meeting in the middle of the afternoon and you can schedule your laundry, order groceries, and a ride to get you home.” Previously time-consuming tasks are now done with the push of a button. “I am able to be there more often for Drew and Frances, and going forward, spending even more time with them is my goal,” which is a sentiment that reflects the underlying purpose of Tumble & Dry — giving individuals and families back their time. Dangling over a plunging 90 foot waterfall, my life was now in the hands of the young guides who led our small group deep into the jungle of the coastal mountains of Honduras near the Rio Cangrejal. After a crash course, thorough and hands-on, I was expected to rappel backwards, leaning into my harness, steering my descent with a wide stance and footfalls against the slippery rocks. So, double-harnessed and helmeted I locked eyes with the guide who smiled and gave me the thumbs-up. With my gaze hazy from the spray and splashing water, I focused on listening for his directions, using my right hand to grip the rope just under my seat, releasing it to drop a little farther down the vertical canyon. The crash of the waterfall was deafening, so I just kept moving aggressively until I could jump into the river and scramble onto a sunny rock to do my victory dance which included a wide smile and expletives. Our “canyoning” continued as we gingerly hiked the banks and swam down the narrow river through the thick brush, climbing moss-covered ledges, jumping into pools, abseiling a few more challenging waterfalls and finally swimming up to the small dock

Red roses are the gold standard for Valentine’s Day. We asked our friends at Hamilton Flowers how to be a smart consumer. They offer roses in various colors so of course, red is not the only choice. Paint Love brings extraordinary arts programming that empowers youth and strengthens communities. Since 2014, the group has served over 18,000 young people, working with over 100 schools and youth-serving nonprofit partners in the Metro-Atlanta area, hundreds of artists of all kinds, and thousands of volunteers. Art is our vehicle, but the soul of our work is showing young people that their voice matters, their ideas are important, and their actions make a difference in changing the world. I believe that every good thing a child experiences can help shape them into happy, responsible, fulfilled adults. That’s also why I write books for children. What adults read is consumed and forgotten, but what children read—or have read to them—shapes their sense of humor, worldview, and outlook on life.

This is the reason I volunteer and contribute to Paint Love. Let me tell you about one project I led for Paint Love. It was with girls ages 13-15. That’s a difficult time of life anyway, but these girls had each experienced neglect within the foster care system, which resulted in them living in a residential program helping prepare them to re-enter the regular world. They were teens in need of some joy without judgment. Sewing is a hobby of mine, so for the project we took old jeans and turned them into casual purses. The girls entered warily, arms crossed, unwilling to make small talk. But as we taught them how to sew, they loosened up. By the end of the session, the tension in the room was gone. These girls who had very few belongings now had cute custom-designed purses they themselves had created.

I’m also involved with Paint Love as a financial contributor. For about the price of a fast food meal each month, I’m providing supplies and support. Paint Love’s mission and its artists’ work have an impact. Not just for the few hours the children and teens are able to create without judgment, but maybe for their entire life. My small contribution can be "the pebble in the pond that ripples to the farthest ends of the pool.”

Lisa Lowe Stauffer, a longtime resident of Roswell, is the author of Two By Two, a rhyming board book for toddlers. She has been a Paint Love artist and donor since 2016.

FRANCESCA DOEHRING, SENIOR The sculpture of the anthurium was the first piece of my AP 3D art portfolio. The reason I sculpted it was

to emphasize the importance of fertility, which is often compared to flowers. This year I have also sculpted a calla lily, a lotus flower, an orchid, and a hibiscus. I used many coils of clay to build it and I made the centerpiece by attaching small cones to it. I built it so tall that it almost didn’t fit into the kiln. After the first firing, I glazed it with palladium and then sprayed the center with white, pink, and orange underglaze. I am passionate about fertility, sexual health and anatomy, so I like to show that through my art. The large vase/ pot is something I sculpted as an assignment for the first ceramic class that I took in high school. It was not supposed to be as large as I made it, but I like to create big things with clay. I also built the vase out of coils. After it was fully built I carved into it to create the natural wavy pattern in it and sprayed it with glaze to give it a softer texture look. I enjoy sculpting pieces on a large scale that at first glance seem simple, but have a deeper meaning to me.

My work is a reflection of society's romanticization of alcohol, its overshadowing of responsibilities like parenthood, the hopelessness of seeing someone you care for begin the downward spiral back into their alcoholism, and being trapped in the spiral of alcoholism, not being able to escape or fulfill the needs of and for those around you, such as your children.

MIRIAM BACHMEIER "Playing with Fire" demonstrates the feeling of burnout often experienced by dancers after pushing their bodies or minds too far in the name of passion. Though beautiful and bright at the beginning of the piece, the passion and love experienced by the dancer slows and chars as the piece progresses. I wanted this work to show the dangers of overexertion: the bigger and brighter the flame, the quicker it extinguishes. “Never Perfect”, demonstrates the feelings of a dancer receiving constant criticisms on their

"A Wave of Responsibility". This piece was created by synthesizing multiple mediums. The background is composed of a watercolor and pen & ink piece, which was photoshopped behind the digital photo of the foreground. This piece is meant to represent the state of mind of the average American high schooler. Washing out and dulling the values of color in Adobe Lightroom promoted the embodiment of a melancholy tone in the piece. I constructed this piece by experimenting with opacity levels in Photoshop and incorporating watercolor works into the digital media. The significance of this piece is a recollection of memories that contribute to the development of one’s character; the lessons and memories absorbed and remembered are what develop one’s personality. The hazy, soft, and granulated nature of the piece conveys the nostalgia which embodies it.

The colors on the work illustrate the individual feelings a dancer feels while receiving criticisms: blue for sadness, purple for disappointment or insecurity, and red represents anger or resentment at themselves. The mirror image represents the inability to escape these corrections as the dancer finds fault in the constant presence of their reflection within a dance studio. The mirrored images also serve to create a broken snowflake pattern, symbolizing the loss of individuality and creativity with molding through correction.
