Welcome to the September issue of Roswell City Lifestyle!
September is known as the fashion and style issue in the magazine world, and we are thrilled to participate in the trend. Not only are we bringing you some fun local fashion that will help keep you on top of the latest styles, but we are also sharing stylish moments, people, places and events around town that have been happening. From the latest in auto trends with the Ferarri unveiling event at Naylor Hall on pg 62 to the fabulous wine tasting from the Benziger Family winemakers at The Capital Grille Dunwoody. Styles are ever-changing, and the fashion world continues to bring us a fresh new take on something from generations past to the pres ent. Check out our story on treasured jewelry on pg 38. Each decade has its own unique trends, and although some cycle back decades later, the origi nality of each look that is reflected often times is connected to the culture and music of the day. I personally had so much fun with the fan-favorite piece on pg 74 because growing up we all played sports in my house. My dad was a coach and then I coached youth sports for many years later, blessed to watch my own chil dren play from the field. Wearing sports gear and fan fashion has been a sta ple in my wardrobe for as long as I can remember. Hats, jerseys, sweatshirts, and even socks, plus tons of tailgate memorabilia brings back so many memories of the fall season. My family and friends have always enjoyed the slogan, "let's play ball!" Today's fashion choices can reveal a little bit of our personality, so it is a great way to express ourselves. Once again we bring you inspiring stories of organizations, and people giving and changing lives from the simplest things as a safe place to lay your head at night, to childhood cancer awareness and our youth working hard to make a difference in the world. Lastly, we celebrate you Roswell, and all the gifts this past 12 months have given to us. I have truly been honored to be a small part of the commu nity, sharing local good news, loving our businesses, and promoting local spending to ensure our town continues to thrive! FOUNDATION Walking by the home of Scott and Meredith Hilton in Peachtree Corners, you would notice a small rock garden, a thoughtful assemblage of 38 stones of different shapes and sizes. The collection is intentional and with a story. Scott has a goal to hike to the highest point in each state across the country. He’s already visited 38, some with his family and others with hiking buddies. At each peak, he pauses to reflect on the grandeur of our great country and pockets a rock to bring home to Georgia. This summer, his family traveled to the northeast, visiting Mount Katahdin in Maine (5,268 feet), Mount Greylock in Massachusetts (3,491 feet), Mount Washington in New Hampshire (6,288 feet) and Mount Frissell (2,454 feet, which straddles the border of southwest Massachusetts and northwest Connecticut) and Jerimoth Hill (812 feet) in RhodeScottIsland.andMeredith’s intrepid troop of trav elers includes Trent (a sophomore at Wesleyan School who plays tennis and the tuba in the marching band), Chase (13, a seventh grader at Pinckneyville Middle School who loves baseball and basketball) and Caroline (10, a fifth grader at Wesleyan who plays lacrosse, swims and loves to sew). “We are very inten tional about getting the kids out of their bubble and experiencing other cultures,” says Scott. “Our kids won’t necessarily remember

Scott also enjoys playing disc golf at East Roswell Park’s course and loads the family into their canoe to float the Chattahoochee as often as possible.

Roswell resident, Julie Smith, her sister, Nicole Goggans, and their mother, Vicki Prewett, created The SAM Foundation four years ago in memory of their brother and son, Sam Johnson (pictured left). Sam died by suicide on December 17, 2002. While the foundation is named for Sam, it also is an acronym that reflects its mission: Suicide Awareness Means...Hope.

The foundation is providing life-saving programs to people all over the United States. In the Roswell area alone, the foundation is working with school counselors and teachers, corporate groups and other members of our community, and it provides higher-level training and cer tification programs to first responders and mental health professionals. All programs are free of charge, and the foundation partners with and supports other like-minded organizations across the country. Since its start, The SAM Foundation has trained more than 6,000 individuals in suicide prevention. At the beginning of one school year alone, a group of counselors from one Alabama county that were trained by The SAM Foundation successfully intervened in the lives of 18 stu dents who were having thoughts of suicide and were able to get them help.

The Benziger family legacy began in the early 1970s when Mike and his wife Mary left White Plains, New York and moved to California to support their eldest son in building the family win ery. I reached out to my California friends at the beginning of April 2020 with an idea of how they could take a pivotal role in help ing many local Atlanta charities survive the pandemic. Since we were all using Zoom anyway, it seemed only logical that we could apply the technology to wine tastings. Chris and Jamie’s simple gesture of sharing their wines brought our giving com munities together to enjoy, laugh, sip, and most importantly, to check in on one another, virtually. It was a great success but it did not stop there.

During 2020 and 2021 there were more than 800 guests at virtual wine tastings across Atlanta with thousands of bottles of wine donated helping to raise criti cal funds for so many worthy organiza tions. In 2016, Roswell’s Historic District had good bones but needed a fresher face! Determined to tackle this concern, some Roswell citizens, business/property owners, and vol unteers gathered to plan solutions that would enhance the beauty of the heart of our city. From those discussions, the Historic Roswell Beautification Project (HRBP) was formed with the mission to create, maintain, and preserve the beauty and charm of our streets and improve civic pride by completing streetscape projects. HRBP is a nonprofit part ner with the city of Roswell and since projects are under taken within the city right-of-way, HRBP receives some funding from the city's annual budget. Remaining funds come from generous donations.
HRBP is managed by volunteer board members who are all Roswell residents and I have the pleasure of working with these incredible people: Jim Van Epps, a successful finan cial services entrepreneur actively serving and participat ing in many worthwhile local and national philanthropic and nonprofit organizations and; Joe Skelton, a nationally known professional landscape designer who owned his own landscape design company, and has 30+ years’ of experi ence in landscape design.
How a community cares for its streetscape and architectural assets is a direct reflection and measurement of its civic pride. The Roswell Historic District is a centerpiece of our community, one of the economic engines that help drive our city’s success.
In its sixth year, HRBP has completed several streetscape projects: cleaning up the Barrington Hall wall, installing ambient tree lighting in Historic Roswell Square, raising tree canopies, trimming overgrown shrubs, installing pavers to widen and repair the sidewalk, minimizing weeds and trash on Canton Street, East, and West Alley, installing mulch at least once a year in the right-of-way, and more. And, perhaps the most impactful project of all, installing and maintaining 48 flowering hanging baskets and over 25 planters on Canton Street, Heart of Roswell Park, and Historic Roswell Square Park. HRBP volunteers have dedicated thousands of hours pushing a 20-gallon water cart up and down Canton Street to water flowers! Several businesses in the area allow the use of their water, as well as store water carts on their property. City employees assist by watering planters inside the two parks. Without the generosity of donors, support from the city and local businesses, and sweat equity of its volunteers, HRBP could not succeed. This support helps HRBP grow civic pride one project at a time.

There were “horses” in front of Roswell’s historic Naylor Hall recently. Not the kind that would have been grazing there back in the 1840s when the elegant house was originally built. These “horses” were cherry red 296 GTB Ferraris that can “run” at over 200 mph!

Parting gifts were offered by white-gloved hands at a fully branded, 3D live hand wall and were exquisite boxes that contained Ferrari logo chocolate with a gold dust ing. It was a memorable evening in which guests traveled to Roswell from as far away as Nashville to test drive the 296 GTB and attend the invitation-only, dramatic VIP unveiling of the 296 GTS Convertible.

Guests enjoyed delicious bites as they par ticipated in a bourbon tasting by Angel’s Envy and were fascinated by the authentic, onsite cigar roller. A live saxophone artist in conjunction with a DJ gave the room a sophisticated vibe. The highlight of the evening was when the glass doors opened, and guests were welcomed into a beautiful tent draped entirely in black silk. The focal point, and star of the evening, was the 296 GTS resting on a lighted LED floor draped in the opulence of a Ferrari- emblazoned silk cover.

After a welcome and remarks by GM Craig Forbes and dealership owner Webb Collums, a drum roll echoed throughout the room and the car was dramatically unveiled by a stunning model. Guests had the opportunity to take photos with the car and check out every amazing feature.

In 2017, Tracy Chmelecki, the founder and president of the charity, had been a part of a ministry called Children Outreach. There, she met a single mom and her kids, and what she saw in their apartment changed her life. She had a hard time believing that this was the reality for some children. “The little girl and her sister were using the cushions from the couches downstairs as a bed.” From this experience, Tracy was inspired to launch Children Without Beds. What she discovered about the importance of sleep was astounding. "I realized all the problems children can face just because they do not get a good night's sleep. That made me realize even more how important a bed is for a child. My passion is to help do all I can to help a child succeed in life. I feel this is done by showing love, letting them know they are special, that God has a great plan for their lives, and to set children up for success, not failure,” she says.

Children Without Beds is a life-changing charity located in Roswell that is dedicated to making a huge difference in kids' lives that don't have a comfortable bed to sleep in or even a real bed at all. This project is determined to make kids feel loved and deserving of making sleep a top priority, which should be a concern for everyone but especially growing kids and teens.

14-year-old Ava Huyen Smith of Roswell is the new Teen Miss Georgia Earth. Ava is a freshman at Roswell High School and a member of the fresh man volleyball team. She also attended Mountain Park Elementary and Crabapple Middle School, where she received the Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award. Her family co-founded the volunteer group Little Helpers in 2010 today with 20 chapters across the coun try. She's also an honors student, singer, guitarist and contributor for the nonprofit Be THE Voice. As part of the Miss Earth program, Ava is using her voice to promote community service, kindness, clean skin care and makeup products as well as recycled fashion. Ava competed in the Miss Earth Florida, Georgia and Tennessee competition in June. She also took home awards for talent, evening gown and social media. This regional program is under the leadership of Director Nic Blaize of Inspire Gravity Consulting and Nic B Cosmetics. In January 2023 Ava will represent Georgia in the national Miss Earth USA in Orlando. The winners will go to Vietnam for the 2023 Miss Earth international competition. Miss Earth is the second largest international pageant, focus ing on beauty and responsibility. Titleholders actively promote and get involved in the preservation of the environment and the protection of the planet. Apart from a strong emphasis on environmental protection programs, Miss Earth also aims to showcase and promote various tourist destinations. I have been a sports fan my whole life, growing up playing sports, coaching sports and watching my kids play have been the very best! The Georgia Bulldogs are my hometown favorites and the South Carolina Gamecocks are the next best thing because my kids are alums. 2 scoops of vanilla bean ice cream
3 Tbs. brown sugar ½ tsp. cinnamon 2 bananas, sliced lengthwise ¼ cup banana liqueur ¼ cup rum

In a flambe pan or large skillet melt the butter over low heat. Add the sugar and cin namon and mix well. Put the bananas in the pan and sauté until they begin to turn soft. Pour in the banana liqueur and half of the rum and continue to cook over low heat. Heat the remainder of the rum in a small saucepan until it begins to boil, then quickly pour it into the pan and ignite. Distribute and prolong flame by tipping the pan with a circular motion with one hand basting the bananas with flame using a long-handled spoon, with the other hand. When the flame dies out, serve two slices of banana to each portion and top each with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Spoon sauce remaining in the pan over the ice cream.

Add vodka, coffee liqueur, espresso and simple syrup to a shaker filled with ice and shake until well-chilled. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with 3 coffee beans. We asked Marcus Dickman at Bayou’Q about his go-to sum mer dessert. And, surprise! It’s Bananas Foster. Lucky for us, he’s generous and kindly shared his recipe. This is one of my favorite dishes and is surprisingly easy to make. You will need a flambe pan or large heavy skillet. To get a good flame, use this simple trick: heat half of the rum, which is added last, in a separate small saucepan until it begins to boil. Quickly pour it into the flambe pan and ignite (if you get the match wet by accident and no flame appears, heat a bit more rum to boiling, separately, and try again. Most of the alcohol burns off as it flames.)
