Welcome to the July issue of Roswell City Lifestyle. Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax. Some of the best summers spent are often filled with activities and road trips, and also sharing simple moments of enjoying those around us. Some of the best times spent can be a backyard barbecue with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating ice-cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. Running out of town for a quick weekend getaway, jamming out to nostalgic tunes in a new convertible was definitely on my bucket list as you can see on page 58. In this issue, we wanted to share some of the happenings around our city this summer and ways to get out and explore together. In addition, it is our privilege to shine a light on a very special local veteran in our community and to send thanks to all for their service in honor of Fourth of July. We have an immense respect for the men and women who make the selfless decision to serve and protect our nation. There is no greater sacrifice than to risk your life in order to protect others. The entire team at Roswell City Lifestyle wants to thank all veterans, those still serving and all of their loved ones for your sacrifices. Giving back, getting to know your community members better, planning an outdoor picnic, or downloading the Summer Sippin' app and voting your way through Roswell for your favorite cocktails are just a few ideas we have to share in this issue! Roswell definitely embraces summer like no other city, with our streets constantly full of people and so many things to do. His internship and residency were completed at the University of Texas Southwestern and fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology was completed at the University of Cincinnati. He was recently an assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati focusing on patients with Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease. In his free time, he enjoys hiking and biking.

Roswell Rotary Supports Clean Water in Panama

Roswell Welcomes Darryl Connelly

In conjunction with Rotary International and other local club chapters, Roswell Rotary led an effort to raise nearly $250,000 to implement a safe water supply in six remote Panamanian villages. The effort began after Roswell Rotarian Langdon Hollingsworth spent two years living in the Darien Province of eastern Panama after graduating from the Georgia Institute of Technology. During his stay, Hollingsworth worked on clean drinking water infrastructure projects with the U.S. based nonprofit Solea Water.

The City of Roswell welcomes Darryl Connelly as the city’s new Economic Development Director. Connelly will be the first person to hold this new position in the city. He comes to Roswell from New York City, where he spent the last 11 years working as senior vice president of asset management for the New York Economic Development Corporation.

HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY ROSWELL’S HOMETOWN HERO TURNS 100

Our hometown hero turns 100 on July 3. Edward George Bernard was born on July 3, 1922, in Burlington. Second Class Quartermaster Bernard was honored by Roswell Mayor Kurt Wilson and Roswell City Council membership in March and awarded the Esteemed Veteran of Roswell. Mayor Wilson’s proclamation states: Edward enlisted in the United States Navy, Amphibian Branch, on June 2, 1942 as Seaman Second Class. He received Naval training in Rhode Island and attended Quartermaster and Signal School in Rosneath, Scotland and Little Creek, Virginia. He was assigned as

a Quartermaster on an English Landing Craft Tank Rocket 373 ship. As Quartermaster, his job was to maintain the maps, calculate targets for the 100 rockets and steer the ship during times of battle. He was required to keep a daily log, except for D-Day, which he was ordered to leave blank. On June 6, 1944, as a Quartermaster on the LCTR 373, he helped launch the largest amphibious invasion in history, the Normandy Invasion. First into battle on D-Day, the LCTR's launched their rockets at critical land targets to destroy enemy strongholds before the allied soldiers stormed the beaches. Following D-Day, Edward George Bernard’s LCTR 373 ship was sent to the Mediterranean to support allied troops that were liberating France and Italy. He returned to England and then to Delaware for more amphibious training. Once completed, his expertise was needed and he was sent to Hawaii to join the fight in the Pacific. His new ship was on the way to Japan to join the land invasion when the war ended on May 8, 1945. His ship was then ordered to circumnavigate and guard the Hawaiian Islands. Edward received his Honorable Discharge on Feb 26, 1946 with rank of Second Class Quartermaster and he was awarded the following medals: WWII Victory Medal, European African Middle East Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal, American Theater Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Upon returning to the United States, Edward George Bernard received his Bachelor of Arts from St. Michael’s College in Vermont and achieved First Chair of the Burlington Military Band. After graduation, he lived in Lima, Peru, and studied ethnology at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos where he received a second Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities. He was assigned to help salvage a school, Colegio Santa Maria, and teach in the small village of Muquiyauyo where he later became their principal. Edward earned a Doctorate Degree and acquired a Master of Arts in Spanish from the University of Arizona before returning to live in Peru for an additional eight years. Edward is fluent in English, Spanish and French. According to friend Janet Russell, Mr. Bernard likes to go to Mac McGees with his family, where staff saves a table for him to enjoy a cider with family and friends. Cheers! Happy 100th Birthday Sir. Wayne Parks and his wife Helen own Archadeck Outdoor Living of Roswell-Buckhead. It’s his job (and pleasure) to design and build beautiful outdoor spaces. Business is healthy and luckily, Wayne and Helen have a team to help them grow. Besides the professionals at Archadeck, the Parks credit their kids for providing boatloads of support by sharing their time and creativity to help the business grow. They have three daughters and two sons-in-law who live in Roswell, St. Louis and East Cobb, along with four grandsons. “The sons-in-law have jobs at Mercedes Benz U.S. in Sandy Springs and Kodak and while they don't work directly in the business as employees, they are eventually benefactors of the inheritance of the business ownership for our company and franchise,” says Wayne. “They have directly assisted in the business on weekends, on occasion as labor for a pergola installation, under-decking installation, and a three-season room window installation. They also helped with a donated patio that we made for a military museum in Fort Oglethorpe. Three of the grandsons also helped with that project,” says Wayne proudly. We asked Wayne what he’s excited about at Archadeck this summer.

It’s not everyday that you are tasked with writing about a friend who just happens to be your boss. I have known this man for more than a decade and he still carries an air of mystery and reverence. He wears many hats: business owner, event planner, executive producer, chef, florist, enophile, visual storyteller, and travel and lifestyle journalist for this magazine. Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Sean O’Keefe spent his early years fishing, farming, and cooking with his grandfather. These hobbies developed into a business when he moved to Toronto and opened “The House Husband.” His “everyone deserves to be a guest in their own home” attitude is as unstoppable today as it was then. California is really where his current career and life started taking shape and it is where Sean began to find his true calling: helping others. One of his favorite California stories was when, after returning from a culinary trip to Europe, he was tasked with the challenge of recreating Europe’s finest dishes for a very formal affair. After the meal, a guest exclaimed that the shrimp dish had taken him "to the moon" and he had not been there in years. As it turned out, Buzz Aldrin really liked the shrimp! Building on his successful culinary and lifestyle businesses in Toronto, Beverly Hills, and Santa Barbara, Sean decided to move to Atlanta in 2008. Over the last 14 years, Sean has been a regular lifestyle and wellness contributor for NBC, CBS, FOX, and The Weather Channel. It was at NBC’s affiliate in Atlanta, where Sean and I became friends, and I produced multiple lifestyle segments for him as I traveled down my career path in local media.

Sean took his culinary and lifestyle experiences to serve the masses with the creation of Sean O’Keefe Events in Atlanta. What started out as an events-based company, has now become a multimedia event production company that works almost exclusively with nonprofit companies and charities all over the southeast and across the nation. “Life is very funny,” says Sean. "It is almost accidental that I ended up in this business.” One of the first people Sean met after relocating to Atlanta was the executive director of a non-profit organization who asked if he knew how to throw a party. Needless to say Sean said "yes" and as they say, the rest is his story. When the world shut down in 2020, Sean knew a pivot was needed for fundraising, as live events were put on hold. He and his team of producers, donors and sponsors have been working non-stop for the past three years to raise money and awareness for non-profit organizations with virtual fundraising events and broadcast charity fundraising. “The most challenging thing that I face with any client is how to teach donors the absolute importance of giving. Equally important is teaching the clients how to treat their donors,” says Sean. He is a big fan of asking people what they want and packaging and delivering exactly what his clients request with clear intention and gratitude. Sean says, “While I am uncertain what exactly the future holds for me, I can be quite sure that it will involve making the world a better place and remembering that gratitude is the key to success.” It is very easy to see why we call him “the charity guy."

It doesn’t get more classic than a 1957 Ford Thunderbird. Goody, the dusk rose convertible, flaunting its original paint and pristine white leather interior, has had quite a life. Goody Levitan, a Disney Studios executive, bought the car brand new in Los Angeles in 1957. The first thing she did was have her name, Goody, artfully etched into the vent glass on the driver’s side. It was the start of a beautiful friendship. The two were inseparable, sharing rides and adventures with the likes of Robert Mitchum, Hugh O’Brian, Howard Hughes, and Kenny Rogers. Even a generous offer from Kenny Rogers to purchase the car couldn’t convince Goody Levitan to part with the babybird. The two Goodys stayed together until Levitan’s passing in 1986, when the car was left to her niece, who lived in Sandy Springs. In 2020, she moved to Florida, leaving the car behind. Enter Vernalisa, owner and operator of Vernalisa Productions. By a twist of fate, Vernalisa was introduced to Goody and bought the classic car on sight. With an eye for detail, Vernalisa knew she was looking at a work of art. A work of art with a white soft top, removable dusk rose hardtop, and an A 312ci V8 engine with 245 horsepower. The car had never been restored, every part was original, perfectly maintained. She bought it because she just had to. They belonged together. Raised in a small town at the very edge of Georgia, Vernalisa has always been drawn to the treasures of the past. She spent summers with her grandfather at his home that was filled with old crafting chairs, fishing nets and old school books on hand built shelves. She was intrigued by the artifacts from his past. He was from a different world and held onto old world things, like fishing and gardening. He taught her about the tools

and the treasures of the past and she carries these traits and skills with her to this day, inspiring her own two daughters. Vernalisa supports the community by sharing her excitement of classic items. She has made Goody available for others to enjoy at special events, such as weddings, baby showers, gender reveals and photoshoots. Rewind by VCR is Vernalisa’s vintage pop up shop that supports the upkeep of Goody. The shop is an homage to her upbringing, reflecting the style and beauty of the past. As an avid treasure hunter, there is always something added to her rich collection. The shop can be found at Alive After 5 each month through October. Vernalisa says, “My plans are to bring light to other classics in the area by offering to help get them rented for their owners. There are many garage treasures in the area. All his life, Eddie 9V (9-volt) has acted on instinct. At the age of 15, this old-soul artist turned away from the path of college and jobs to burst - all guns blazing - onto the roots and blues club circuit of his native Atlanta. Flash forward to 2019, and for his debut album, Left My Soul In Memphis, the prodigious multi-instrumentalist simply powered up the amps in his mobile trailer and with his brother/co-writer/producer, Lane Kelly, laid down one of the year's breakout releases, acclaimed as "fresh and life-affirming" by Rock & Blues Muse. "Memphis was a total side project," shrugs Eddie, "that ended up taking off." Now, released in 2021 on Ruf Records, Little Black Flies is the 25-year-old's most impulsive move to date. Tracked live in Atlanta's Echo Deco Studios through November 2020, once again with Lane turning the knobs, plus a who's who of the state's best musicians, it's an album that Eddie planned to feel like it's unfolding right in front of you – right down to the clink of bottles and loose studio banter. "I've seen a trend in modern recording," he says. "There's no soul. I took inspiration from Albert Collins, Otis Rush, Mike Bloomfield. All those great records were done live with their buddies and no overdubs. I wanted the playing to be spot-on, but even if we made a mistake, we kept going." This record catches everything that went down at a session

that felt more like a party, as Eddie leads the lineup through nine new songs - plus three classic covers – that retool the soulblues genre on his own terms, reminding a new generation why this music hits so hard. Horns blast, drums rattle, slide guitars howl and at the heart of it all is Eddie's stinging guitar and unmistakable vocal, the bandleader thrilling us one minute with his soul-man holler, then spinning story songs like he's sitting on the next barstool. The Magnificant Magnolia Ball On Saturday, May 21, Friends of Bulloch, Inc. celebrated the 37th Magnolia Ball at the Atlanta Country Club with its generous sponsors and more than 200 guests. It was a magical evening with beautiful gowns and handsome tuxedos enjoying the Magnolia Ball Opening Reception with outstanding auction items, unique gifts from Mittie’s Gift & Museum Shoppe, and photo shoots with the Magnolia Ball Committee, the Roswell Rotary Club, and the Roswell Woman’s Club. After the reception the program began. The ballroom was beautiful, with exquisite floral arrangements on a column pedestal, which was in keeping with the Greek Revival architectural theme representing the four 21-foot Tuscan columns of Bulloch Hall. Mayor Kurt Wilson and First Lady Stacey Wilson were recognized as Honorary Chairs and the Mayor held the flag as veterans were honored and colors presented. These banners were on loan from the Roswell Presbyterian Church where they are archived. After dinner, the dance floor came alive to the music of the Fly Betty Band. The Magnolia Ball is a highly coveted event in Roswell. It raised more than $50,000 to help continue Friends of Bulloch, Inc.’s mission to repair and preserve Bulloch Hall, childhood home of Mittie Bulloch, mother of the 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt, and to complete the Blacksmith Shop and the beautiful pergola entrance to Orchard Hill.

The mission of The Drake House is to provide a lifeline of supportive housing and enrichment programs for single mothers and their children who are experiencing homelessness in the North Fulton area. Our vision is to be an integral part of our community, to facilitate financial security and ultimately, housing stability. We provide fully furnished private apartments to each family, a food pantry, laundry services, and other basic necessities free of cost while moms work with their family service managers to develop personalized empowerment plans to reduce debt, achieve a living wage, and attain market rate housing. The Drake House provides support for families through wraparound services such as a dedicated career coach, weekly life skills workshops, mentoring support, financial success coaches, and a redesigned youth enrichment program that will provide a two-generation approach to poverty and homelessness.
