Cheers to our May issue of Roswell City Lifestyle This issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence in herself, while at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out greatness in them, too. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed rather than competing with each other is so beautiful and rewarding. Enjoy reading about several generations of women and some of their unique experiences and favorite hobbies. In this month’s issue, we are sharing stories of women who have made their mark in and around our community in one way or another. We are featuring beauty queens like our very own Paulette Schier, Miss Georgia, and the lasting legacy mother’s and grandmother’s inspiration. Our cover model and actress, Danielle Rose Russell, was a delight to meet while she was taking a break from filming here in Georgia. We met for coffee at Crazy Love! We are also recognizing a few women who are finding ways to give back to our community, that has left me inspired through their teaching, music, arts, and charities galore. Some of these remarkable women are still with us and some have gone on, as we are left to remember them fondly with much love and gratitude, like my own mother (whose recipe box is a treasure, a legacy I’ll leave for my daughter). In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. I also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for their impact on your life. You won’t regret it. School News Mountain Park Elementary School presented their spring musical Aladdin Jr. at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center in March. The show featured 175 students in grades 2-5 and was run by parents and staff volunteers. Roswell High School Robotics “Team Oscar” recently competed in the Georgia FIRST Robotics Competition in Dalton. They initially placed fourth out of 33, won quarterfinals, and won the Team Spirit Award.

After losing my husband, surviving cancer, losing my best friend in the whole world to the pandemic, and the isolation due to Covid followed by a hip replacement, I was feeling like Humpty Dumpty. Holbrook life has certainly put me back together again. Advice: Have the courage to give up things like possessions, a house, furniture - stuff that you hold on to just because you've always had it. Embrace change. Growth requires giving up some of your security temporarily. Enjoy life. This is not a dress rehearsal. Girlfriend jams: A fond memory is going to an Elvis concert with my girlfriends. What a fun time! We were all screaming. One particular song that reminds me of my dancing days is "I Heard it Through the Grapevine," by Marvin Gaye. The Bob Dylan and folk music era made me feel like I could change the world. Whether you’re wearing short shorts or spending more time around the pool this month, it might be time to visit a vascular surgeon to treat those pesky spider veins and varicose veins. We turned to Dr. Arun Chervu, and Dr. Emily Lagergren, both Board-Certified Vascular Surgeons, to explain when (and how) treatment is necessary. Spider veins are the small, visible veins, which often have the appearance of being drawn on the skin with a fine pen. They do not bulge out beyond the skin, but can be unsightly and can also be associated with itching or discomfort, though they are considered cosmetic. Varicose veins are the bulging veins, often seen on the thighs and legs. As they grow larger they can cause pain, itching, burning, fatigue, and become more unsightly. Varicose veins are not just a cosmetic issue. They can often be a sign of an underlying vein condition known as Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI). CVI is as prevalent as heart disease. It can cause blood pooling in the legs, especially in the calves and feet, leading to leg fatigue and more. “During menopause, when women lose hormones, smaller veins can dilate and become more visible. With advanced age, the skin may become less elastic and thin, making it easier to spot the varicose veins from the surface. Some women who have never had varicose veins may start noticing them for the first time, and those who previously developed varicose veins may see them worsen,” says Dr. Lagergren. What next? Yes, compression stockings are a Godsend. Along with exercise and weight loss, they are worn for the initial treatments of CVI. But, good news is here. “There have been several advancements in the treatment of vein problems. Most of them can be done in office, with minimal discomfort, and very little recovery time,” says Dr. Chervu. “Most of the time, patients can return to work and regular activities the day after treatment or even the same day.” Healthy and more attractive legs are more accessible to men and women than ever before. “All too often women get sidetracked taking care of others before they will even acknowledge their own health. Sure, it is commonplace, but it is not always right.” Take some time for yourself and come meet Dr. Lagergren to discuss your vascular health. In 2019, Mike Boustead and David Troy Francis launched The Roswell Music Club to showcase extraordinary musical artists in intimate environments - private homes and unique properties. The focus is on classical music with a taste of musical theatre and other genres. Led by Roswell Arts Fund Chair, Scott Hitch, a new partnership between RAF and the city of Roswell for Mimosa Hall and Gardens helped establish a permanent home for the club at Mimosa Hall. Last month, soprano Tiffany Uzoije performed there on Easter Sunday.

David is a concert pianist (with eight commercially available CDs), recording pianist, film recording pianist and composer. Together with Mike, he produced and composed the very successful BARK! The Musical, which ran for two years in Los Angeles (the third longest-running show in that city’s history) and has been mounted on three continents and many U.S. cities. His husband Mike was a successful music editor for films such as Pursuit of Happiness, Remember The Titans, Princess Diaries, Armageddon, and others. “We share food and drink in a relaxed atmosphere,” says David of the Music Club salons. “We meet on the third Sunday of each month and have grown to over 150 members. Our past performers include singers from Opera Atlanta and instrumentalists from the Atlanta and Asheville Symphonies.” Each attendee pays $30 and brings either a beverage or finger food. All monies go to the artists or to pay incidental expenses such as chair rental and such. “Our concerts are sold-out events, averaging around 45-55 people depending on the capacity of the host’s home.” Upcoming featured artists include Tiffany Uzoije, soprano; MK Penley & Andre’ Ellerby, musical theatre; LeSean Lewis, baritone; Andy Hudson, clarinetist; and Victoria Hill, soprano. “All of these women are quite accomplished,” says David. “Ann Marie is completing her doctorate in voice this spring and has performed extensively. Tiffany appears frequently with Opera Atlanta and is the mother of two young children. MK is an amazing theatrical performer and mother of two children. Victoria will graduate from Juilliard this year and was the first runner up to Miss America in 2019, as well as being Miss Georgia that year. The Passion Foundation was created by Roswell resident Jon Parla in 2010 when his wife Tara was first diagnosed with melanoma. Tara battled metastatic melanoma for 2 1/2 years. As a mother of two, Tara’s wish was to spare as many children as possible from having to suffer in the way that she did. Jon and Tara wanted to turn a negative for their family into a positive for the community, so they started the Foundation together. Today Jon leads the Foundation’s efforts to fulfill Tara’s mission. On May 1, the third annual fundraiser, “Getting Tipsy for Tara” will take place at Deep Roots Wine Market & Tasting Room, from 4:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m., in memory of Tara Parla. The Passion Foundation raises funds to place sunshades over playgrounds to protect children from the sun’s harmful rays. To date, the foundation has placed 14 shade structures. There are four in the Roswell area: Mountain Park Elementary, Roswell North Elementary, Vickery Mill Elementary, and Cornerstone Preschool; and 10 structures in Florida. Each shade costs between $18,000 and $35,000 to build. They block up to 97% of UV rays and can keep the playground 20 degrees cooler in the summer months. Deep Roots will donate 10% of the day’s sales to The Passion Foundation. As an added surprise, Roswell General, Stems on the Move and Steel & Cotten will have pop-up shops at Deep Roots for a “Kendra Gives Back” event.

Paulette Schier entered her first pageant at age 12 on a whim. She had no idea that the Miss Congeniality title in the Miss Freshman pageant would be the catalyst for life-changing experiences. She didn’t know the shy tomboy growing up in the Atlanta suburbs would compete in the iconic Miss USA pageant. The girl who had a hard time making friends learned that people liked her, that she had talent and poise, and that she could compete with (and beat) some of the most talented young women in the country. The misconception about pageant winners is that they are superficial and only focused on external measures of beauty. Schier strongly disagrees. “People don’t realize that pageants are actually all about giving back,” Schier told Roswell City Lifestyle. “It’s not just about

beauty. Pageants force you to ask yourself how you can use your position for good. The majority of girls in pageants are all about helping their community, giving back, sharing an experience and making friends. And,” she added, “these girls are really smart too.” Pageants can also be a fantastic stepping stone to many other opportunities. After winning Miss Teen All-American Georgia and the national pageant, Miss Teen All-American, Schier received a full college scholarship, which she eschewed to spend a year working as a model throughout Europe, having experiences she never could have imagined. In 1994, Schier competed in the Miss Georgia USA pageant and she won! She went on to compete in the Miss USA pageant in 1995. “As Miss Georgia, I was asked to travel to places around the world

to promote the 1996 Atlanta Olympics,” Schier recalls. “We even went to Switzerland. We stayed in castles and were wined and dined. It was fabulous!” Pageants created some of the most memorable and meaningful times in her life. Schier received a lot from competing in pageants, but she has given back too. Along with running her real estate company, Paulette Schier Properties, she works with the Salvation Army and volunteers with her church and Sunshine Kids, a non-profit dedicated to helping families dealing with pediatric cancer. She has continued the community-minded work she learned as a pageant queen all those years ago. “My mother was a big proponent of community service. She taught us that there are always people who don’t have it as good as you and you have a responsibility to give back.” CONTINUED >

Paulette Schier has advice for young women of today who have both the advantages and disadvantages of living in a technologically-advanced, social media-crazy world. “Be you. Be authentic. Be true to yourself and be the person you were created to be. I want young people to stand for something. Whatever you are passionate about or empowered by...stand for it. Life can be hard, but it is what you make of it.” Schier added, “It’s not about your obstacles, but how you overcome them.” Paulette Schier is now a licensed realtor working with broker Berkshire Hathaway. While Danielle Rose Russell’s career has taken off as the star of the CW Network’s Legacies, she has definitely been the author of her future. For her entire life, Danielle has been surrounded by powerful women and her success is a testament to those who have helped her realize her dreams. Danielle was raised primarily by her mom, Rosemary, and grandmother, Irene. “They are two of the most powerful women that I have ever met,’” says Danielle. “I cannot really talk about my mom without talking about my grandmother.” The family sacrificed a lot to advance Danielle’s career to where it is today but, there are no regrets. “My mother was the only one who truly believed in me, even when there was no success and no glamor, she allowed me to become a child actor.” Danielle credits her mom and grandmother for giving her a “normal life” and for keeping that a priority in all aspects of her life. “I’d like to think that I am fairly normal for being a child actor,” she laughs. There are some memories that trigger a lot of emotion for both Danielle’s mother and grandmother. Rosemary remembers the start of Danielle’s career and mailing out her daughter’s headshot when she was only 10 years old. “She was a natural, not afraid at all. It was magic, a surreal experience for everyone,” says Rosemary. Her daughter’s incredible success takes her breath away. Growing up, Danielle remembers her grandmother forever singing Doris Day’s Que Será Será. This musical connection was immortalized forever in a tattoo on Danielle’s neck of the lyrics in her grandmother’s handwriting. “This tattoo represents and honors the very special connection between us,” says grandmother Irene. “Our loving and powerful relationship is full of emotion.” These relationships are as strong as ever and Danielle enjoys spending as much time with her mother and grandmother as possible. Today Danielle is a successful Hollywood star with big career dreams and even bigger expectations of herself. “I think it’s kind of a lifelong challenge, being comfortable in your own skin,” says Danielle. Recently, she completely removed herself from all social media. It was an intensely personal decision for

her and definitely not one that was fully supported by the people in the entertainment industry. “I have dealt with a lot of bullying and a lot of shame online. I just decided I didn’t really care about what people thought of me,” she says. Deciding not to live her life based on other people’s expectations gave Danielle the ability to be more happy and more confident than she has ever been. “I think for the first time in my life, I’m really truly happy and confident in my own body,” expresses Danielle. “I have honestly never felt happier.” The roles that Danielle has played have all been quite disparate. Each has taught the young actor many of life’s lessons and helped shape her into the woman that she is today. “Playing Hope Michelson has taught me what it’s

like to work really hard and to be a leader,” says Danielle. While very different from each other, the character Hope, in CW’s drama TV series Legacies has been a huge part of Danielle’s life for the last five years. For Danielle, the biggest struggle of being on a network television show is not having control over your character. “Having such little say in your character’s evolution can be frustrating sometimes.” Danielle is grateful for Hope, “She has a special place in my heart, and I’m ready to see what’s coming next for me.” Danielle is happy with her career choices over the years and is looking forward to her future. “I decided to just let my career evolve naturally and to let the universe help me along the way,” says Danielle. “I really want to spend time on choosing the right roles and not to be locked into the role of Hope Michelson forever.” Whether Danielle chooses television or a return to the big screen, we can be assured that we will be seeing a lot more of Danielle Rose Russell in the future.

When Marco Rossi of Roswell was approached by a friend to be a dancer in EDIN’s Celebrit y Dance Challenge, he declined. Having suffered an epic fail in his second-grade rendition of Mar y Poppins, self-doubt kicked in. But when he experienced f irsthand the effects of mental illness on a family member, he wanted to support an organization that promotes mental wellness. EDIN, formerly branded the Eating Disorders Information Network, now in its 25th year, has expanded its mission to include mental wellness and body positivity in Georgia schools and organizations. EDIN, EDucation and INsight on Eating Disorders, has been the state leader in education and early detection of eating disorders and continues to be a resource for teachers, coaches, professionals and parents. “Eating disorder cases have significantly increased since COVID hit in 2020, and the mental health of so many are in crisis as we continue to live with the global pandemic,” says EDIN executive director Marci Soran. “Anxiety, depression

and eating disorders have increased and the demand for mental health services are at an all time high. We have been diligently working to develop new programs to help address our current issues.” The Celebrity Dance Challenge is EDIN’s largest event and proceeds go directly into our community to provide educational resources for teachers, coaches, professionals and parents to detect and address mental health and eating disorder issues in children and young adults. EDIN’s 11th annual Celebrity Dance Challenge takes place on Sunday, May 22. It will be streamed live and bring back celebrity dancers from the past 10 years. Pollo a la Pepa Madrid Spanish Taverna, which has quickly become a Roswell institution, celebrates its one-year anniversary with a weekend-long celebration on May 13, 14, and 15. Known for its authentic Spain-inspired ambiance, music, folklore, and tapas, paellas, and wine, the restaurant features a gorgeous patio and gazebo, where sipping sangria on a Georgia day is unrivaled. The concept for the restaurant was born after many years of travel and research by owners, Abe Ruiz and Swani Gonzalez. Stories from Swani’s grandmother, “Pepa”, and her love for Flamenco, inspired the initial idea. Abe and Swani dreamed of bringing a slice of Spain closer to home; and sharing their love of living life to its fullest, travel and new experiences.

“I have been in the restaurant business for 34 years. I have created multiple food and beverage concepts, and certainly know a thing or two about operations,” Abe says. “Swani and I have always talked about Spain and the feeling of “tapeando”: hopping from bar to bar for tapas, great wine, and even a cold Estrella beer or two.” On any given day, Swani is in the restaurant and greets every table and guest. She really has a passion for her visitors and immediately makes them feel at home. My grandmother’s nickname was Pepa - a nickname for Spanish women named Josepha. She made this a lot, especially for big family gatherings.” CONTINUED >

Pollo a la Pepa (chicken Pepa style)

• 1 whole (3 3/4 pound) chicken • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced • 4 garlic cloves peeled and thinly sliced • 1 tablespoon minced fresh flat-leaf parsley • Kosher salt and black pepper • 1/4 cup blended oil • 2 cups beer – We like to use Estrella Damm. You can also substitute with dry sherry wine.

DIRECTIONS 1- Cut the chicken into 10 pieces (wings, drumsticks and breasts). Season the pieces on all sides with 2 teaspoons of salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. 2- Heat oil in a large, deep skillet over high heat. Add half of the chicken and cook, turning once, until golden brown on all sides. 4 to 6 minutes. Place on a plate and cook the remaining pieces. 3- Reduce the heat to medium and add the onion and garlic. Stir frequently, until soft, about 5 minutes. Place all the chicken back in the pan with juices in one single layer. 4- Pour Beer (if any left or open a second can) and raise heat to high and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to medium-low. 5- Cover and cook until the chicken breasts are no longer pink. Cook for 10-20 minutes, checking regularly. 7- Transfer the breast pieces to a plate. Cover again and continue to simmer the rest of the chicken until very tender. 8- Check after 15-25 minutes. You want meat to pull away from the bone. 9- Uncover and raise the heat to high so the sauce cooks away the acidity of the beer (alcohol) and the sauce thickens a bit. 3 to 5 minutes. 10- Put the chicken breasts and juice back in the pan and coat in the sauce to warm up. 11- Toss in the minced parsley Buen Provecho!

Georgia Ensemble Theatre (GET) opened its longawaited world premiere of The Pretty Pants Bandit, a new Atlanta-born, pop-rock musical by Chase Peacock and Jessica De Maria, with a successful three-week run in Roswell. “How lucky are we to have such a high-caliber performing arts center right here in Roswell? The new show by Chase Peacock and Jessica De Maria was a pleasure. Not only did they have live music (a seven-piece band), but I also really enjoyed the choreography that went into the making of the show,” says Julie Wojenski of Roswell. Set against the economic and racial disparity of 1930s Miami and inspired by a true story, The Pretty Pants Bandit gives voice to the voiceless and empowers the powerless. Part heist adventure, part romantic comedy and all excitement - “Stick ‘em up and take ‘em down!” - The Pretty Pants Bandit is moving and deeply entertaining. The musical was directed by James Donadio, GET’s artistic director, with music direction by Alli Lingenfelter and choreography by Kari Twyman. The pressing need for repair and preservation of Bulloch Hall and grounds, childhood home of Mittie Bulloch, mother of our 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt, and the completion of the Blacksmith Shop and the beautiful pergola entrance to Orchard Hill.

This year the Magnolia Ball will highlight the Greek Revival architecture of Bulloch Hall considered by many current architects as the best example in the South. Four Tuscan columns 21 feet in height grace the pedimented or triangular gable forming the roof over the portico or porch. It revived a style of architecture used in the ancient Greek temples.
