three healthy financial moves for 2022 ARTICLE BY SHAWN MCCABE PHOTOGRAPHY BY GINA CELLINO
1. One of the best investments you can ever make is in yourself. Before we start worrying about stocks, mutual funds, and diversification, let’s talk about the most important investment decision you will make. How you take care of YOU. With healthcare costs skyrocketing and becoming more confusing, work on the items you can control. You. Your decision to work on a healthy lifestyle, such as a daily walk or moving towards more healthy food choices, can pay big dividends. You will never regret this investment.
So here we are. Chapter one of twelve in the book of 2022. Let’s take a proactive stance in making sure you and your family are financially healthy and strong. More help at iThinkFi.org
2. Set goals. Pen it out. Writing down goals can have a big impact on achievement. And besides, what do you have to lose? I like to write my top three goals out every day. This keeps them top of mind and my actions in alignment with what I want to achieve.
3. My last suggestion is one I find not many do, but this exercise can be very powerful. Track your net worth. This is a simple exercise that has many purposes. The first is to truly understand the financial situation you are in - good or bad. Similar to writing down your goals, when you understand the impact your decisions have on your net worth, it helps you make better decisions. It can also motivate you as you see your net worth grow over time. It can be very motivating to hit certain thresholds. Please know this can be a very simple document. I suggest doing this twice a year. My husband and I track our net worth twice a year: at the end of June and again at the end of July. This has also been an unemotional vehicle for talking openly about our finances as a couple.

Jim Brown’s love for cars runs deep. At 17, he started learning the auto repair business, mentored by the owner, inspired by the generations before him who worked in the business. “I was honored when John (mentor/former owner) made me a partner at 24 and began to groom me to turn the business over to me completely at age 28,” says Jim, who lives in Alpharetta with his childhood sweetheart and wife Karen. "I lived the American dream. I knew from that moment that I wanted to honor John and his family by continuing to deliver the same compassion and level of service to our great community.” This month, as we all think about health and wellness, we asked Jim what TLC we should be giving our cars at 2, 5 and 10-years old.

Feeling Good about CBD Tommy Williams of CBD Store and More is here to help.

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of the chemical components called cannabinoids found in cannabis, a plant known for its wellness properties. Hemp and marijuana belong to the cannabis genus of plants. Unlike THC found in marijuana, CBD is completely non-psychoactive, allowing people to enjoy the benefits of the cannabis plant without the high. "Too often first time customers think we are a 'weed shop," says Tommy Williams, vice president of retail sales and operations at CBD Store and More on Canton Street. "People think all we sell are products to get you high. We pride ourselves on spending as much time as the customer needs to gain an understanding of the benefits of CBD." Tommy and his team call this time with new customers "CBD 101." The majority of the time, once they understand the amazing benefits, they purchase that day and almost always become a regular customer and friends with the team. "We get lots of thank yous!" CBD's uses are numerous. Anoemulsion CBD Softgels are convenient to use and give you predictable results. "Our proprietary process uses water-soluble nanoemulsion technology, which is shown to increase bioavailability of the CBD to your system up to 200% over oil-based CBD products," explains Tommy. Each softgel contains their PCR hemp oil along with beneficial terpenes and cannabinoids. Available in an Everyday Formula for daily wellness, Melatonin Formula for healthy sleep habits, and Curcumin Formula to target inflammation and joint support. Roswell has been a good home for the shop. “We like the smalltown vibe that Historic Roswell gives. Our business model from day one has been to help people. We figured that a high-traffic area like Historic Roswell gives us a wonderful opportunity to do just that. Plus, we love the older buildings. We are fortunate to have found a space that meets our needs,” Tommy says. The shop’s customers are varied. Jeff Martin, age 76, came in to discuss his everyday aches and pains and sleep patterns that come with age. “The Graceleaf Nano Gelcaps with Curcumin have significantly helped me in my daily routine. The Graceleaf Nano Gelcaps with Melatonin have greatly improved my sleep patterns. I would recommend these products.” Another regular customer hobbled in looking for help. “I’m a newbie to all of this and was hesitant about going in. Tommy saw my knee brace and suggested I try the CBD sports cream. Within 15 minutes my knee felt better than it’s felt since I wiped out on my 16-year-old neighbor’s bike. It’s a very calming shop, with a friendly and cool owner.”

From quick bursts to complete cleanses, consider juice as your nectar ARTICLE BY ALYSSA FAGIEN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Juicing is a great way to get your recommended daily vegetables, and it provides a quick burst of energy because the lack of fiber allows your body to absorb the nutrients immediately. Interested in trying a juice cleanse? Drinking six cold-pressed juices each day is a powerful way to cleanse your body of toxicity, while giving your liver, kidneys, and colon a chance to heal. Whether you choose to cleanse for one day or seven, consider a cold-pressed juice cleanse program as the perfect support system for your healthy lifestyle.
Superfood kitchen Kale Me Crazy exclusively makes coldpressed juices, which retain nutrients, enzymes, flavor and overall freshness longer than any other juicing method. Visit KaleMeCrazy.net or stop by 1570 Holcomb Bridge Rd, Ste 910. Cleanse packages must be ordered 48 hours in advance.

Staying fueled up My go-to power mid-day snack is dark chocolate-covered almonds and Clif bars are my favorite before a workout or as a game snack. Practice makes perfect Our practices are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday with games on Wednesdays. The girls practice for two hours during those days, with the weekend designated for resting and recovering. Games are set up as a round robin setting with three teams being present and each one playing each other. Around town I love From the Earth Brewery. All their food is produced locally and extremely healthy! I’ve done the juice cleanse from Clean Juice in Alpharetta. I loved the flavors and results. Pound and Ground Coffee in Alpharetta has a relaxing and inviting atmosphere. Their coffee is smooth, and they always have new specialty drinks!
When the girls make a mistake, (we all make mistakes) I remind them that it’s okay and they just need to make up for it in the next play.
On working with teens What motivates my girls is setting a goal on the first day of practice. We set a goal to win the area, then win the state. Before games, I remind the girls of our goal and it pushes them to achieve it. When the girls make a mistake, (we all make mistakes) I remind them that it’s okay and they just need to make up for it in the next play. When you’re head coach, your players look at you for guidance. If you stay positive, then the girls feed off that energy. If you let the game get the best of you, the girl’s positive energy will decline.

Special Education Teacher/ Literature, Cross Country and Track Coach
Staying fueled Acai Bowls are one of my favorite treats. I typically don’t eat much before a workout or race, but if I do it is usually half of a banana or plain bagel. Practice makes perfect Practices are Monday-Friday after school. During the season, our weekly schedule consists of one to two workout days, along with a couple of regular runs. Strength exercises and form drills are also incorporated at the beginning or end of each practice. Since meets are on Saturdays, Fridays are typically our easy days with a pre-race talk. On working with teens One of the best parts of coaching is getting to build relationships with the kids that I coach. While strong performances (whether it be individual or team) are motivating, letting the girls know that I not only care about them but believe in them, plays a big role as well. Even on the tough days, the comradery amongst the team makes everything worth it. We truly have a great group of kids and it brings me great joy to be their coach. It has been really fun not only getting to teach at the school I graduated from 10 years ago (2011), but to now coach the team I ran for. Cross Country was the best part of my high school experience, so it is really special getting to come back and be a part of that once again.
One of the best parts of coaching is getting to build relationships with the kids that I coach.

INSIDE OUT
DOCS TELL ALL
Jeff DeMercy, DDS
ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Making a connection with a health care provider is so important for a patient's success. We asked a few of our favorite health care providers how they engage with patients (that's you and me!) and also what trends they are excited about for the new year. And, you have to be healthy to help others, so how do they stay fueled? Meet three Roswell docs with good attitudes.
PATIENT ENGAGEMENT: We ask if they are new to the area. How did you hear about us? Do we see any other family? What has been your previous dental experience? Any special concerns regarding their dental health?
NEW FOR ’22: Airway/sleep apnea, especially in children, and its effect on development.

Dr. Steve Lako PATIENT ENGAGEMENT: We really treat our practice members like family. We want to know how their health concerns are affecting their lives and we ask what their life would look like if they had control of their health. We also want to know if they are interested in completely correcting their issues or if they are more interested in patching up the problem and coming back into the office if/when the issue comes back. We typically ask them if they’ve been to a chiropractor before and what was their experience?
NEW FOR ’22: 2022 is going to be a big year! I am very excited that I am able to attend advanced seminars in person (rather than online) in order to learn and grow for my practice members. Learning the new, cutting-edge advancements in chiropractic allows me to achieve results faster for my community. Also, the advancement of technology in chiropractic allows me to show people exactly what is causing their health issues and allows me to track their progress so they know where they are in the healing process. Information is power.

Dr. Steve loves weight training and eats toward his training goals, so, he is very boring when it comes to breakfast. He has 4 eggs, 2 slices of organic bread or oatmeal with berries, and 2 slices of turkey bacon (sometimes). For a late morning snack, it’s a protein shake with assorted nuts. Lunch is a large portion of chicken, with brown rice and a vegetable. A pick-me-up snack is typically something like the morning: a protein shake, and some healthy fats. “My kryptonite is pizza and Italian food,” says Dr. Steve.

Damon Christian Kimes, M.D. PATIENT ENGAGEMENT: As our office is mainly focused on the treatment of pain for patients, I generally start off by asking our patients to tell me about their pain. I usually follow that question with a timeline and a mechanism of injury question so that I understand more about what caused the injury. I generally take the approach of listening to my patients and really allowing them to help me figure out the diagnosis.
NEW FOR ’22: Regenerative medicine has become a powerful weapon we as physicians can use it to treat chronic and acute pain patients. I am excited about this treatment because it truly heals the patient as opposed to just solely providing pain relief. We are able to use the body‘s own mechanisms of healing real-time with our patients, and because the treatment comes from their own bodies, we generally see no side effects and achieve great outcomes!
HEALTHY NOSHING: I usually grab a bottled water and eat an omelette in the mornings. I don’t always eat breakfast as some days I enjoy intermittent fasting. However, I enjoy exercising in the mornings and consider breakfast a reward after a hard workout.

#1 New Year’s Resolution:
Update Your Estate Plan
A new year allows us to reflect on the past year and look forward to life ahead. While you’re contemplating the future, make updating your estate plan your primary goal. You probably had major life events in 2021. Births, deaths, marriages, and divorces can all require changes to your estate plan. Maybe you bought a new house, or had a bad experience probating your parents’ estate. Even if nothing major happened last year, it’s best to review your documents for potential issues with your designated representatives, beneficiaries, and the IRS. If you haven’t gotten an estate plan yet, why wait? Start the new year with a plan for the rest of your life. Estate planning isn’t just about where property goes when someone dies - it’s also about how decisions will be made if you become ill or incapacitated.

Partnerships Making Beer Better ARTICLE BY MIKE THOMAS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Tim Stevens
New year, new beer and new partnerships. Tim Stevens owns From the Earth Brewing Company and is working hard to make beautiful beer and find local businesses to support. MT: What seasonal pours will be on tap in January and February, and what makes them special? TS: We will be pouring the following seasonal beers in January: Cosmonaut 9.4% Imperial Stout, Apple Bottom 6.4% Cider, Africa 5.4% Pale Ale using South African hops, along with our other 8-10 FTE beers. MT: Tell us about your relationship with Martins Gardens. How did the farm come on your radar and why are you excited about sending your spent grain back to their farm and partnering with them to grow produce for your menu? TS: I was introduced to Martins Gardens by a chef friend as we opened FTE. I then met the owners and became quick friends! I love that we get to partner with a quality farm so close to us! We love the fact that they are using our spent grain to better the quality of the product! MT: What will feature on your menu in January? Hummus, salmon dip, FTE plate, pork loin, duck, lamb, salmon, Vegan/vegetarian and gluten free options all sound amazing. What are the stand-outs? TS: I really enjoy all our offerings, but the duck and the lamb are my favorites on our current menu. Remember that our menu changes with the seasons, so our items will change seasonally.
MT: Tell us about how you and your employees will celebrate the new year? TS: We always have a fun NYE celebration at the restaurant and a holiday party after the first of the year. We will also plan on doing team-building outside of the restaurant. Our team is like family, so we like to treat them as such! Let me introduce you to our crew. General Manager/Brewmaster – Brian Lee Assistant GM - Austin Clark Chef – Joey Stallings Sous Chef – Nelson Gutierrez MT: Do you do any community give-back? TS: Giving back to the community is a top priority! That’s one of the main reasons we picked East Roswell, as we live there and wanted to give back to the community that supports us. Some of what we do includes feeding those in need a Christmas Eve dinner. We are also currently supporting the EJ Community Foundation with their Holiday Giving Program, which provides gifts for over 70 local children. We worked with The School Meal Program to feed students during the COVID shutdown, and we are proud to support the local schools with “Give Back Tuesdays”, where we give a percentage of sales back to the schools. We hosted a teacher appreciation event this past summer to recognize them for a job well done during a very difficult year due to the pandemic.

A Healthier Home
Tori McGee is a holistic realtor here in Roswell.
Look inside your four walls for cleaner living

ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS PHOTOGRAPHY BY JERMEY PENTSIL
While January signals fitness, dieting, and physical and mental wellness, we thought it would be fun to look at the health of our homes, where we raise our kids, spend time with family, and find refuge every day. Tori McGee calls herself “a holistic realtor,” and believes real estate is the next frontier that will be radically transformed by the wellness movement. “Our homes, communities, and surrounding environment directly affect our daily behaviors and lifestyles, and together these determine up to 80–90 percent of our health outcomes,” she says. When she lists a property or shows homes to clients, she has a checklist a mile long. Determining whether a home is “clean” means looking for power lines, testing with a EMF Meter (measuring ambient electromagnetic fields), and looking for water leaks and musty smells. Tori’s inspection vendors test for radon levels, mold/air quality, septic or sewer scopes, and superfund sites requiring long-term response to clean up hazardous material contaminations. CONTINUED >

We asked Tori how, in the current market, buyers have the luxury of asking more questions before putting in an offer. “I always reach out to the listing agent to find out what the seller's needs are. We have had to make a few adjustments to our offer and timelines, we will not forfeit a quality home inspection even in a competitive market,” says Tori, founder of Non-Toxic Georgia. Homeowners can make small changes before listing, she says. “Start with removing the plug-ins and toxic air freshener or candles. Use essential oils with a diffuser, or air purifiers,” she says. "Make repairs prior to listing, fix water leaks rotten wood, and address any mold or high radon levels. Switch from toxic pesticides for lawn care and bug control to a nontoxic local company and clean carpets wisely." We talked to A4 Carpet Cleaning to find out how they tackle dirt naturally. “Your first line of defense is to vacuum your carpets regularly using a HEPA filtered vacuum with good suction,” says owner Timothy M. Lom. “Regular vacuuming and professional cleaning keeps carpet fibers from getting dull so your carpet will stay cleaner and look brighter longer.” His company uses anti-redeposition agents that help repel soil from the fiber to keep the fiber cleaner longer. “All solutions are non-toxic, soap and residue-free with no VOCs, making them green-friendly as well as child and pet safe!” Leading the way, Tori believes real estate is the next frontier that will be radically transformed by the wellness movement. "Since our homes are typically our most important personal investment and expenditure, it is only logical that they should also be an investment in our health and wellbeing. I work hard with families to best fit their concerns." AtlantaHolisticRealtor.com A4CarpetCleaning.com

Champions Among Us TRAIN LIKE NORTH FULTON'S PARALYMPIANS
"Home is where the heart is and the training is best!" So says two North Fulton-based Paralympians who may live and train in Roswell, but both have New Year's plans that will once again take them around the globe after their record-breaking performances and gold medals in Tokyo during 2021. They also have advice for their fellow North Fulton residents as the new year brings resolutions and goals for the coming months.
ARTICLE BY RICK LIMPERT PHOTOGRAPHY BY WAYNE ALBRIGHT Shot on location at CrossFit Breaking Boundaries
On track with Nick Mayhugh. Sprinter Nick Mayhugh has found Roswell and North Fulton ideal for his training on and off the track. "It's been fantastic," stated Mayhugh, who won three golds and set two world records in Tokyo. "The weather is great for training. I love the sun and I love the heat and it's such a welcoming atmosphere. I grew up in Northern Virginia and I'm familiar with heavy traffic, so it reminds me of home." Whether it's going for sushi, coffee at the nearest Starbucks or eating tacos from Mr. Taco on Holcomb Bridge Rd., Mayhugh says the area offers the ability to keep his daily routine and be comfortable. "Training is one of the most critical parts of your life and lifestyle as an athlete. I love hanging out with locals and regulars, but I really have a small circle of friends. It's crucial to keep stress and distractions at a minimum." Nick got his start in competitive sports with soccer. He excelled and even with a mild form of Cerebral Palsy, nothing was going to stop him from reaching his goals and inspiring others. He joined the US Para 7-A-Side National Soccer Team in 2017 and has participated in four major competitions and has played in six different countries, all while scoring 34 goals in 25 appearances. But it would be in track and field that Mayhugh would find international success in Tokyo. Golds in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100 relay along with two world records put Mayhugh in rare air. Only 11 Americans have won more golds in a single sport at a Paralympic Games than Mayhugh. It's an accomplishment that Mayhugh wants to share with others. In his free time, he loves to give motivational speeches at schools and local sports clubs. He is always looking for ways to share his story to inspire and motivate young people. "Chasing dreams" has been his resolution for many years, but Mayhugh is expanding on that for 2022. "It's about keeping things simple," smiled Mayhugh. "It's okay not to be okay and showing emotions is also okay. Have fun and remember why you started this (journey)." Pergolini echoes that advice and wants to thank everyone for helping her achieve her goals. "It's all about appreciating the moment, the people around you and having a comfortable lifestyle." Gia Pergolini dives into the best of Roswell. “I am so fortunate to be from Roswell and it all starts with the people,” explains US Paralympic swimmer, Gia Pergolini. The 17-year old St. Francis senior and Dynamo Swim Team member appreciates all the support she receives to hone her craft. “From my neighbors to organizations

like the Rotary Club, people have been super supportive and it’s just a great family community.” After returning from Tokyo with a gold medal, shattering the world record in the 100m backstroke, Pergolini was afforded the opportunity to train just about anywhere, but the decision was easy to stay in Roswell. “It’s best for me to stay where I’ve been all along at Dynamo Swim Club in Alpharetta. I’ve worked with Coach Nate Graves almost my entire life.” And since she was 13, she’s trained with Larry Keaton at CrossFit Breaking Boundaries in Roswell. Keaton says Gia brings something unique to the gym. “Gia brings to my gym community the energy of youth, the wit and humor of her parents, and the hard work of an elite athlete. She is like a little sister. Seeing her achieve her dream of a gold medal was one of the proudest moments of my life.” Maturity emanates from the young swimmer, but her resolutions for 2022 aren’t limited to what happens in the pool or gym. A New Year’s desire to get more fit will include frequent trips to her favorite restaurant, Poke 4 Life on Alpharetta Highway. The Poke 4 Life Bowl with salmon, tuna, crab meat, mixed greens and other vegetables is her favorite. She also enjoys shopping at Avalon with friends and family, and dinners at La Strada on Johnson Ferry Road. The new year will bring the 2022 Paralympic Swimming World Championships in Madeira, Portugal and a decision on which college Gia will be attending in the fall of 2022. “I know 2022 will be a success and that I’ll make the right decision on college,” adds Gia. “I couldn’t do it without my parents. They have been so supportive. Being a kid with a vision disability doesn’t just affect you, it affects your entire family.” Rick Limpert is an Atlanta-based writer that covers the intersection of sports and technology. AMY CHEROF, M.D.
Dr. Amy Cherof and family at home.
Roswell City Lifestyle: You grew up in the Roswell area, what changes have you seen? Amy Cherof, M.D.: The Roswell community continues to be one of the best-kept secrets of the Metro Atlanta area, and Roswell loves to celebrate pride in all things local! Obviously, there are new developments happening all around, but the best way this community has grown is through the new families that have helped continue the spirit of togetherness. RCL: Your husband, Dr. Nathan Cherof, is also from the Roswell area and owns a local dental practice. Why did you return to Roswell? AC: We met in Augusta while we were both attending the Medical College of Georgia for graduate studies. We found out we were both from this area and had mutual acquaintances. After a few years of travel, my husband and I decided to return home to be closer to our families. Family is our biggest priority, and we love being surrounded by our extended family to share in daily life and help us raise our children.
RCL: When did you first realize that you wanted to become a doctor, and more specifically, an ophthalmologist? AC: It was during an anatomy class at Lassiter High School when I discovered that medicine was my calling after a medical mission trip in college to Central America. Then in medical school, after seeing cataract surgery during my first ophthalmology rotation, I just knew this was something I had to be a part of. RCL: What advice would you give a patient concerned about their cataracts and surgery? AC: Cataracts are a natural part of getting older. Sometimes patients feel like they did or didn’t do something that contributed to the growth of their cataracts, but that is false. There are only three things guaranteed in life: death, taxes, and cataracts. But the good news is that cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in America. And patients can see results as early as the next day.

Finding Community in Fitness Rick Banks is the owner and director of SFX Fitness in Roswell and believes that everyone’s fitness story is unique. While he is a very private person, he shared with us that he found healing and hope in the gym community after slipping into a dark place, losing his sense of self. Now, he wants to help others find their brighter, healthier core through community, commitment, and consistency. “The SFX Experience is all about discovering your personal fitness journey and what keeps you motivated and committed to creating a healthy lifestyle,” he says. "Beginning with a personal assessment of members’ fitness level and goals, we help build a unique program and help them choose the right fitness approach for them. We are known for our personal training excellence and boot camps, as well as a variety of group fitness classes.” LW: What is your personal fitness regime and how has it benefited your physical and mental health? RB: Fitness is my passion! I am living out my dream as the owner of SFX Fitness. I believe in a fitness routine not only to keep in shape, but also to help guide me physically and mentally every day. LW: Why did you choose Roswell as the home for your business? RB: Roswell has a strong sense of community that is hyper-sensitive to supporting small businesses and an urban lifestyle which has helped accelerate its growth. With the ongoing development of real estate, as well as annual population growth of 8%, it was an easy decision to open our first location here. LW: If there was one piece of fitness advice you'd share with our readers in January, what would it be? RB: Incorporate the three “C's” into your daily life to help you achieve your personal and professional goals: Community, commitment, and consistency. All three play an important role in one’s dedication to mental and physical wellbeing. I have stood by these words as pillars from an early age and use them on a daily basis in my personal and professional life.

NEW FRONTIERS IN PAIN RELIEF ARTICLE BY ROSWELL CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF | PHOTOGRAPHY BY WAYNE ALBRIGHT
For the past six years, Captain Tommie Benefield and his daughter, Blaire Benefield Shelton, have been helping people who experience acute and chronic pain enjoy non-pharmaceutical, non-invasive, quick, long-lasting pain relief. Tommie is a 30-year retired Navy Captain veteran, a retired airline captain, and is currently working on his Ph.D. in Quantum Energy Medicine. In early 2015, Tommie met the distributors of a microcurrent technology, who introduced him to the unique medical equipment. The home-use and clinical devices are unique “US FDA 510K, cleared for symptomatic relief and management of chronic, intractable pain, and adjunctive treatment in the management of post-surgical and post-traumatic pain.” These smart microcurrent devices safely and effectively stimulate the body’s natural response to pain, without drugs, injections, or surgery – providing pain relief for hours to days from a single treatment. They use just two AA batteries for weeks of improvement, fit in the palm of your hand, and

provide neuro and bio-feedback for targeted tissue regeneration. The gentle signals from the devices are interactively adjusted with every subsequent signal based on changes in the tissue; with little to no accommodation or habituation. Tommie became a believer in this technology instantly. Having been through his own bout with pain, he could feel how different this device was from all the others he had tried. The first time Blaire tried the device, she was working as a court stenographer in D.C., overstressed and fatigued. The pain relief, stress relief, and energy improvement Blaire experienced motivated her to close her business and move home. Together, Blaire and Tommie started MBS Wellness Group to demonstrate the pain relief devices, train medical practitioners to add the devices to their therapeutics, to teach their clients how to effectively use the technology, and to create specific self-care treatment methods for every client.

In addition to directly helping others, Tommie and Blaire have recently succeeded in getting the device kits approved for veterans to receive them for FREE through the Veterans Administration. If you are in pain, please contact them at 770.765.7347 or at MBSWellnessgroup.com.
