Can you believe it's already August?
It feels like just yesterday we were making summer plans, and now we're shopping for school supplies, checking class schedules, and figuring out how to get everyone back into a routine. As much as we love the slower pace of summer, there is something refreshing about the start of a new school year.
Back-to-school season gives us a chance to hit the reset button. We start setting bedtimes again, planning meals, organizing calendars, and creating a little more structure in our days. It may take a few weeks to find our rhythm, but those routines often help our families feel more balanced and connected.

If you're a parent, you know the transition can bring a mix of emotions. There is excitement for new teachers, new opportunities, and new friendships. There can also be a little anxiety, whether it's your child's first day of kindergarten or their last first day before graduation. Every stage comes with its own joys and challenges.
And let's not forget about our pets. They get used to having the kids home all summer and often notice when the house suddenly becomes quieter. A little extra playtime, a walk around the neighborhood, or simply sticking to a consistent schedule can help make the adjustment easier for them too.
In this month's Kids & Pets Issue, we're celebrating the families, businesses, and organizations that help make our community such a great place to live. Inside, you'll find resources, stories, and local businesses that support both the two-legged and four-legged members of our households.
One of the things I love most about this time of year is the sense of possibility it brings. A new school year reminds us that every season offers an opportunity to learn something new, build better habits, and grow in ways we may not have expected.
As your family settles into the months ahead, I hope you find moments to slow down and enjoy the little things. The morning hugs, the after-school conversations, the walks with your dog, and the family dinners often become the memories we treasure most.
Wishing you a smooth transition, a successful school year, and plenty of reasons to celebrate this season with the people and pets you love.
Warmly,

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.
Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.
Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.”
Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.
After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”
The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

Many children learn some of life's most important lessons through their relationships with pets. Compassion, responsibility, patience, and unconditional love often begin with the wag of a tail or the purr of a cat. In Rockwall County, Rockwall PAWS helps ensure that more families, and more children, have the opportunity to experience those special bonds by giving vulnerable animals a second chance at life.
Founded with a mission to reduce the number of homeless and unadoptable animals, Rockwall PAWS provides critical medical treatment to pets at the Rockwall Adoption Center before they are adopted into loving homes. By addressing serious medical conditions that might otherwise prevent adoption, the organization transforms animals once considered difficult to place into healthy, adoptable companions.
One of Rockwall PAWS's most impactful programs focuses on heartworm-positive dogs. Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition that affects thousands of dogs across Texas. Treatment can cost adopters thousands of dollars, creating a significant barrier to adoption. Rockwall PAWS became the first non-rescue organization in North Texas to fund heartworm treatment and major medical care for adoptable shelter pets, helping
remove that obstacle and giving deserving dogs the opportunity to find permanent homes. Since 2010, Rockwall Paws has treated over 400 dogs for heartworm.
The organization works closely with veterinary partners, including Legacy Humane Veterinary Clinic and Pet Doctor, to provide lifesaving care. Funding is used for heartworm testing, chest X-rays when medically necessary, specialized surgical procedures, medications, and the costly Immiticide injections required for heartworm treatment. Because every animal's medical condition is unique, treatment plans are individualized based on factors such as age, overall health, and severity of disease.
Beyond heartworm treatment, Rockwall PAWS also assists with major medical cases involving injured or ill animals at the Rockwall Adoption Center. Whether a dog requires surgery after an injury or a cat needs specialized medical care before becoming adoptable, the organization steps in to provide resources that many municipal shelters cannot fund alone. These efforts not only save lives but also improve quality of life for the animals and increase their chances of finding loving families.
The impact extends beyond the animals themselves. Families who adopt through the Rockwall Adoption Center often gain a

healthy, ready-to-love companion without facing overwhelming medical expenses. Children, in particular, benefit from growing up alongside pets that teach empathy, kindness, and responsibility. Every successful adoption creates a ripple effect of positive change throughout the community.
Rockwall PAWS relies on community support to continue its mission. Donations directly fund medical treatment for shelter animals in need, while volunteers help raise awareness and
support fundraising efforts throughout the year. Every contribution, large or small, helps provide lifesaving care and creates more opportunities for animals to find permanent homes.

ARTICLE BY LITTLE LANTERN COMICS PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF LITTLE LANTERN COMICS
Little Lantern Comics was created with a simple belief: stories can bring light into dark places. Founded as a purpose-driven publishing initiative focused on children and families, the organization combines storytelling, community outreach, and charitable giving to help place comics and graphic novels into the hands of children receiving treatment in hospitals and cancer centers.
Working alongside ComicBooks for Kids, Little Lantern Comics helps provide age-appropriate comics to young readers facing long treatments,

difficult recoveries, and uncertain days. While many people see comics as entertainment, the organization views them as something deeper. Stories can give children moments of escape, imagination, laughter, and hope during situations that often feel overwhelming. The partnership began when ComicBooks for Kids expressed concern over the growing difficulty of finding appropriate content to send to children in hospitals and cancer centers.
That mission inspired the launch of Tales from Twisted Ravens, an anthology created not only to entertain readers, but also to help support future donations and outreach efforts. Through book sales, community support, and awareness campaigns, Little Lantern Comics aims to expand the number of hospitals and care centers reached through its partnership efforts.
The organization’s local impact continues to grow through community engagement, online fundraising, and direct support from readers who believe creativity can make a meaningful difference. Families, educators, comic fans, and small business supporters have all contributed to helping the project gain momentum during its first months.
Kids and pets connect naturally with the heart of Little Lantern Comics. Children often form powerful emotional bonds with animals, whether through beloved family pets, therapy animals, or fictional animal companions found in stories. Those connections can provide comfort during stressful times and remind children they are not alone. Many comics and illustrated stories use animal characters because they help young readers feel safe, understood, and emotionally connected to the adventure unfolding on the page. Little Lantern

Comics will continue exploring those themes in future projects, including Tales from Twisted Ravens: Kevin , which features a pet rabbit companion as part of its story.
Little Lantern Comics believes stories work in much the same way. A comic may only take twenty minutes to read, but the emotional impact can last much longer. For a child sitting in a hospital room, a funny character, exciting adventure, or heartfelt moment can become a small lantern in an otherwise difficult season.
Readers who want to support Little Lantern Comics can help in several ways. Purchasing books directly helps fund future outreach efforts and charitable initiatives. Readers can also share the organization online, recommend the books to libraries and schools, or contribute directly to ComicBooks for Kids.
To learn more, visit www.LittleLanternComics. com. Readers can also follow Little Lantern Comics on social media for updates on new projects, community outreach, and future campaigns supporting children in hospitals and cancer centers. Donations and involvement opportunities are available through the website, and every purchase or shared post helps bring more stories, imagination, and encouragement to children who need them most.

Ask people in the community about Shanna Upchurch and you’ll hear the words “passionate” and “advocate.” While there are many in our community who help kids and pets, Shanna advocates for something a little smaller: the honeybee.
Shanna moved to Texas in 2012 and currently lives on a small homestead in Rockwall. When asked why she began to love bees, she recalls a simple moment. “A swarm landed in a tree in my yard. I could walk right up to

them and see just how beautiful and incredible they were and how they worked as a society to travel and find a new home. I scooped them into a bee box, and I was hooked!” To this day, Shanna often travels to other homes in the Rockwall area to save bees by safely relocating them to her home apiary.
Shanna used her love of the honeybees as an inspiration for her new book, The Honeybee Highway. In this story, a young girl named Joey Jordan helps her uncle transport bees from Florida to California to help pollinate an almond grove. The book illustrates the values of hard work and friendship, while also teaching the importance of our connection to nature and human connection.
According to her neighbor Lauren Cameli, “She is the first neighbor to always rally everyone when any of the neighbors needs anything.” It’s part of Shanna’s willingness to help and support others that led her Shanna to becoming a local celebrity. At her recent book release day at Barnes and Noble, she sold all 150 copies of her book, setting records at the store.
Shanna’s husband, David, shares, “To me, this illustrates how warm and accepting Shanna is. She had people there from her gym community, from church, her neighbors, her kids' teachers and principals, the girls she coached in basketball, and the boys she coached in basketball and baseball. She's constantly in motion seeking to lift and improve the lives of those around her."

Local Realtor Shares Why Rockwall Is Great for Kids, Pets, and Outdoor Family Fun

For many families, choosing where to live is about more than square footage and a nice yard. It's about Saturday mornings at the playground, evening walks with the dog, and finding a community that makes it easy to spend time together.
That's one reason families continue to gravitate toward Rockwall.
"Rockwall is surrounded by the lake,” says Mary Jones, owner of Mary Jones Real Estate. “We've got the Harbor, the waterfront where the sailboats come in and out, top-notch schools, a very low crime rate, and a beautiful historic downtown. It's a great place to live."
Whether you're new to the area or simply looking for your next place to put down roots, Rockwall is a favorite for families, kids, and pets.
Harry Myers Park
Harry Myers Park is a place many people travel to Rockwall to visit for disc golf tournaments or their kids’ Little League game.
For kids, the park features multiple playgrounds and a splash pad to escape the Texas summer heat. Beyond the playground, visitors will find catch-and-release fishing ponds, trails, sports fields, picnic areas, a pickleball court, and a butterfly garden. The park also boats a community center and community pool.
"A lot of people come here to play pickleball,” Jones says.
Pet owners can enjoy Harry Myers’ dedicated dog park with separate spaces for large and small dogs.

For those who like Disc Golf, Harry Myers Disc Golf Course is rated 94th in the world (out of 13,000 parks) by UDisc and offers a challenging course for amateurs and professionals.
The Harbor Rockwall
For many residents, life in Rockwall revolves around Lake Ray Hubbard.
The Harbor, a dining and entertainment destination, combines waterfront views, restaurants, shopping, and walking paths into one family-friendly location. During the warmer months, the area hosts Concerts by the Lake, giving families a reason to grab lawn chairs and enjoy an evening outdoors. Jones says it's one of the experiences she frequently mentions when introducing people to the city.
“People love to bring their coolers and their chairs and go sit on the lawns down at the Harbor and watch the bands,” Jones says.
Historic Downtown Rockwall
Just a few minutes from the lake, Historic Downtown Rockwall offers a different kind of family outing.

“The school system is one of the biggest draws,” Jones says. “People want to raise their kids in an area that’s got such great schools. Rockwall is a great family community.”
The area is home to local boutiques, restaurants, and community events throughout the year. Families can browse the Rockwall Farmers Market on Saturdays in the summer, attend seasonal festivals, or spend an evening exploring the historic square.
However, ask almost any realtor what attracts families to Rockwall, and they’ll tell you it’s the schools.
"The school system is one of the biggest draws,” Jones says. "People want to raise their kids in an area that's got such great schools. Rockwall is a great family community."
Combined with low crime rates, a strong sense of community, and proximity to Dallas, the district continues to attract families looking for both opportunity and quality of life.
Perhaps that's why Jones describes Rockwall as having "a small-town feel" despite its continued growth.
"It's like the city in the country," she says.
Rockwall offers plenty of reasons for families to put down roots. And, whether families are relocating from across the Metroplex or simply looking for their next home within the community, Mary Jones Real Estate helps buyers navigate Rockwall County’s neighborhoods, schools, and unique lakefront opportunities.
After nearly a decade in real estate, Jones’s motto is to help you “bring your dream home.” Which, she says, is not only about helping clients find a house. It is really about helping them find the lifestyle that's right for them.
“If you want to live on an island in the middle of Texas, come to Rockwall," Jones says.

As summer comes to an end, many families are shifting from relaxed routines, later bedtimes, and slower schedules back into school structure. While backpacks and school supplies get a lot of attention, some of the most important back-to-school preparation cannot be found in the school aisle. The skills that often make the biggest difference are the ones that help kids walk into classrooms, friendships, and new situations feeling comfortable and capable.
As an etiquette instructor and founder of Sociable, I have learned that modern manners are about much more than “please” and “thank you.” They help kids feel confident, kind, and comfortable in everyday situations. Social confidence is something children can build and practice over time.

“MODERN MANNERS ARE ABOUT MUCH MORE THAN ‘PLEASE’ AND ‘THANK YOU.’ THEY HELP KIDS FEEL CONFIDENT, KIND, AND COMFORTABLE IN EVERYDAY SITUATIONS.”
Focusing on the following five social skills can help kids walk into the new school year with confidence and connect with new friends along the way.
1. INTRODUCE YOURSELF FIRST
A simple “Hi, I’m ___” can open the door to new friendships. Sometimes confidence is simply taking the first step.
2. BEING INCLUDED STARTS WITH INCLUDING OTHERS
Notice who may be standing alone. Invite someone into a conversation or save them a seat. Kids who make others feel comfortable often build strong friendships.
3. LOOKING UP MATTERS
Eye contact, smiling, and putting away distractions such as cell phones tell people, “I see you.” Small actions can make a big impact. A simple trick I teach kids is to notice someone’s eye color when meeting them or shaking their hand. It helps them slow down, stay present, and make a stronger connection.
4. NOT EVERYONE HAS TO LIKE YOU
Kindness matters, but your value does not change based on someone else’s opinion. Kids do not need to change who they are to belong. When you are yourself, you are more likely to find friendships that feel genuine and comfortable.
5. DON’T CONFUSE AWKWARD WITH FAILURE
New classrooms, friendships, and situations can feel uncomfortable at first. One awkward moment does not define who you are. Everyone makes mistakes, and learning how to recover and keep going is an important life skill.
“Confidence doesn’t come from knowing every rule. It comes from knowing what to do next.”

LEADERSHIP ROCKWALL CLASS OF 2026 LEAVES A LASTING LEGACY THROUGH AG BARN RENOVATION
ARTICLE BY ROCKWALL AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ROCKWALL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

One of the most powerful aspects of leadership is the ability to leave something better than you found it. That spirit was on full display as the Leadership Rockwall Class of 2026 completed its class project: the renovation and enhancement of the agricultural barn facility at Rockwall ISD.
For almost three decades, Leadership Rockwall, a program of the Rockwall Area Chamber of Commerce, has helped develop informed, engaged, and community-minded leaders. Through an immersive nine-month experience, participants gain a deeper understanding of the issues, opportunities, and organizations that

shape our community. A cornerstone of the program is the annual class project, which allows participants to work together to address a meaningful local need while creating a lasting impact.
This year's class focused on the Rockwall ISD Ag Barn, a facility that serves students involved in agricultural education, FFA programs, and livestock projects. The barn is much more than a building; it is a hands-on learning environment where students develop responsibility, leadership skills, work ethic, and practical knowledge that often translates into future careers in agriculture, business, veterinary sciences, engineering, and skilled trades.
Through fundraising efforts, volunteer labor, and collaboration with community partners, the Leadership Rockwall Class of 2026 completed significant improvements to the facility. The renovations provide a safer, more functional, and more welcoming environment for students, educators, and families who utilize the space throughout the year.
The project reflects the Rockwall Area Chamber of Commerce's commitment to strengthening the community through leadership development. While the Chamber is widely recognized as the hub for business in the Rockwall area, its mission extends beyond supporting
businesses alone. By investing in programs like Leadership Rockwall, the Chamber is helping cultivate leaders, foster civic engagement, and build partnerships that improve the quality of life for all residents.
The benefits of this project will be felt for years to come. Students participating in agricultural programs now have enhanced facilities that better support their educational experiences and personal growth. Families and community members who attend livestock shows, exhibitions, and student showcases will also enjoy a more accessible and attractive environment.
Perhaps most importantly, the project demonstrates what can happen when leaders from diverse industries come together around a shared purpose. The Leadership Rockwall Class of 2026 has created a tangible legacy that will serve future generations of students while strengthening one of the community's most valuable educational programs.
As the ribbon is cut and the improvements unveiled, the project stands as a reminder that leadership is not simply about holding a title. It's about making a meaningful difference. Thanks to the dedication of this year's Leadership Rockwall class, Rockwall ISD students will benefit from that difference for many years to come.

ARTICLE BY AMY BUSCH, COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND TRAINING SPECIALIST, CACRC PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CACRC
At The Children’s Advocacy Center for Rockwall County (CACRC), we are passionate about stopping abuse before it starts. While we lead the critical work of coordinating Rockwall County’s response to child abuse, we are equally dedicated to empowering families with the knowledge needed to prevent it.
Child abuse prevention takes a community effort, and every adult plays a role in building a culture of safety for children. To support this work, we offer free child abuse prevention training and presentations throughout Rockwall County. As a Community Engagement and Training Specialist for the CACRC and a parent myself, I am grateful for the important work we do and the privilege of presenting this information to our community.
We offer safety lessons designed for children and teens, along with more in-depth presentations for parents, educators, caregivers, and anyone with a heart for child safety. We also deliver customized professional training to meet the needs of local schools, childcare centers, youth-serving organizations, and faith-based organizations.
Recently, parents have shown growing interest in how to talk with their children about online safety. With technology rapidly advancing, it’s critical for parents to stay informed about digital risks and how social media, online games, and generative AI can be used to harm and exploit children.

One of the simplest ways to start is by talking regularly with your child(ren) about their digital habits. Discuss how to safely use tools like generative AI and how to protect personal information online. We are Community Education Partners with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and they offer free guides and resources on their website to help families have these conversations. Visit them here: https://www.missingkids. org/netsmartz/home
When AI is used in a healthy way, it can offer many benefits and even help families develop smarter technology habits. For example, you can use AI to create a Digital Safety Contract with your child or teen. These written agreements allow you to gather your child’s input while establishing clear expectations around technology use. While templates are available online, AI can also help you customize a contract that reflects your family’s values. Reach out to us for a resource list, including a suggested generative AI prompt to help you get started on making a customized Digital Safety Contract.
Technology works best when adults stay involved. Talk with your kids early about what devices they use, why they use them, and how to think critically about the content they view. If your child comes to you about an inappropriate photo or video, be a trusted adult. Allow them to share what they feel comfortable with, ask questions, and seek help. If needed, you can take action immediately and report the incident to the CyberTipline ( https://report. cybertip.org/) and/or your local law enforcement agency.
Our president and CEO, Patricia Mejia, explains, “Ensuring children’s safety—both offline and online— requires education and collaboration. Our community is fortunate to have experienced child abuse prevention professionals leading this work and helping families build safer digital environments.”
Having regular conversations about online safety is essential for raising confident children who make safe choices. As parents, we encourage kids to develop good habits when it comes to food, schoolwork, and friendships; it should be the same with technology.
The CACRC is a nonprofit organization serving children who have experienced abuse, neglect, or witnessed a violent crime. We are dedicated to preventing child abuse through community awareness and education, and we provide a safe, secure, confidential, and childfriendly environment where healing can begin. To support or continue learning more, follow us on social media @RockwallCAC. To receive our online safety resource list or to request training, reach out to us at education@rockwallcac.org.

One of the greatest traditions in American entrepreneurship is the humble lemonade stand. For generations, it has served as many children's first introduction to business ownership, customer service, and financial responsibility. In Rockwall, that tradition has evolved into something much bigger through Lemonade Day, a national program dedicated to teaching young people the skills and confidence needed to become tomorrow's business leaders.
The Rockwall Area Chamber of Commerce proudly launched Lemonade Day Rockwall Area in 2023 with a simple but powerful goal: provide local youth with hands-on experience in entrepreneurship while helping them develop lifelong skills. This has continued to blossom into one of the community's sweetest annual traditions.
Lemonade Day is about far more than selling lemonade. It is a practical introduction to financial literacy, leadership, problem-solving, and personal responsibility. Participants are encouraged to follow the program's core philosophy of spending some of what they earn, saving some for the future, and sharing some with a charitable cause. These lessons help build not only future entrepreneurs but also engaged and responsible citizens.
Over the past four years, more than 600 young entrepreneurs have participated by opening their own businesses and generating more than $55,000 in sales. While the numbers are impressive, the true success of the program is measured in the lessons learned.
ARTICLE BY ROCKWALL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ROCKWALL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
The 2026 event in May did not disappoint. Participants discovered how to create a plan, establish goals, manage expenses, market their products, and serve customers. Many also experienced firsthand the satisfaction that comes from turning an idea into reality and learning that with hard work and determination, they can truly turn lemons into lemonade.
Any local school-aged child may participate in Lemonade Day at no cost. Young entrepreneurs are given access to an app and workbook that guide them through starting and operating their business. While lemonade is certainly encouraged, participants are also allowed to sell other products and showcase their creativity, giving each business its own unique flavor.
Leading up to the event, participants attend workshops, develop plans, create marketing materials, and prepare for the big day. On event day, stands are arranged in a farmers market-style layout

on the Rockwall City Hall campus. Each stand showcases the creativity, determination, and unique personality of its young owner. From custom branding and specialty recipes to innovative customer engagement strategies, participants bring plenty of zest and entrepreneurial spirit to the marketplace.
The success of Lemonade Day would not be possible without the support of sponsors, volunteers, parents, educators, and local businesses. Their investment of time, resources, and encouragement helps create an experience that leaves a lasting impact on participating youth while supporting the Chamber's mission of strengthening business, workforce development, and economic vitality throughout the Rockwall area.

As our nation approaches the celebration of America's 250th anniversary, Lemonade Day serves as a powerful reminder that entrepreneurship remains one of the defining characteristics of the American spirit. The same values that built our nation—innovation, determination, hard work, and opportunity—are being nurtured today in the young entrepreneurs opening their very own businesses during Lemonade Day.
The Rockwall Area Chamber of Commerce is honored to lead this initiative and invest in the next generation of innovators, business owners, and community leaders. If the success of the first four years is any indication, the future of entrepreneurship in Rockwall County looks refreshingly bright.
To learn more about supporting youth entrepreneurship through the 5th Annual Lemonade Day Rockwall Area or to sign up a child in your life for the 2027 event, contact the Rockwall Area Chamber of Commerce at lemonadeday@rockwallchamber.org or follow Lemonade Day Rockwall Area on Facebook for updates and registration information.
