Sun's Out, Fun's Out

To The Amazing Readers,

There’s something about summer that brings out the big kid in all of us, especially the men of Rochester. Maybe it’s the longer days, maybe it’s the smell of freshly cut grass, or maybe it’s just an unspoken agreement that adulthood can take a slight backseat when the sun is shining.

Suddenly, we’re ripping through the bike trails at Stony Creek like we’re training for the X Games (spoiler: we’re not). We’re sneaking out of work just a tiny bit early to squeeze in a quick round of golf, convincing ourselves it’s “networking.” We proudly toast a beer to ourselves after a long afternoon of “yard work,” even if all we really did was move the hose around a little bit.

Summer in Rochester is for outdoor concerts where we pretend to know the words, days out on the boat where sunscreen application is… optimistic at best, and spontaneous dinners on downtown patios where burgers somehow taste even better under the open sky. It’s a season for cheering from the sidelines at kids’ sports games (tearing through handfuls of sunflower seeds, of course) and reminding ourselves that joy is found in the simple things.

This month’s issue, the Gent’s Issue, celebrates that spirit. It reminds us that underneath the business attire, family schedules, and neatly trimmed lawns, there’s still a kid who just wants to play outside a little longer.

Here’s to a summer full of bike rides, boat days, burgers, and beer. May we never lose the part of us that still gets excited for peanuts at a baseball game.

Cheers to being a big kid this summer,

June 2025

DAIA ORTHODONTICS: CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF SMILES IN ROCHESTER HILLS

BLENDING ART, SCIENCE, AND COMPASSION, DR. DAIA CONTINUES A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE IN ORTHODONTICS AND OROFACIAL PAIN CARE.

At the heart of Rochester Hills’ most trusted orthodontic practice stands Dr. Daia, a visionary whose generosity, artistry, and innovation have redefined what it means to deliver exceptional care. More than an orthodontist, Dr. Daia is a true artist and healer, blending science and compassion to create life-changing results. His love for beauty, from designing perfect smiles to curating an inspiring office filled with original artwork, touches every aspect of Daia  Orthodontics. Beyond the walls of his practice, Dr. Daia’s deep commitment to service shines,  dedicated to making a lasting difference both in his patients’ lives, in communities around the world, and through teaching and educating the next generation of dental and medical professionals. As the practice proudly celebrates 50 years of serving the community, it’s clear that Dr. Daia’s extraordinary talent and heartfelt dedication are what make this legacy truly timeless.

Raised in a family deeply rooted in healthcare, Dr. Daia’s path to dentistry was shaped by early experiences helping in his parents’ pharmacy and by the example of his grandfather, a lifelong caregiver. Though he initially aspired to study medicine, a full scholarship led him to explore dentistry. “I wasn’t sure at first that dentistry was the career I wanted to pursue. I had the will and desire to do something bigger, improving people’s lives and curing illness,” shares Dr Daia.  But he soon realized that his passions for medicine, art, and engineering could find a home in dentistry when his journey took a defining turn. He had the opportunity to shadow one of the founders of his dental school, a man who not only mastered his craft but also dedicated his life to serving children and building orphanages around the world. Inspired by this mentor’s knowledge, humility, and global impact, Dr. Daia found his true calling and through orthodontics, orofacial pain management, and temporomandibular disorder treatment, he discovered the perfect way to combine his talents, serve others, and, ultimately, make a lasting difference in people’s lives.

“After practicing general dentistry, I noticed a significant information gap in the field,” Dr. Daia explains. “Very few clinicians truly understood the complex neuromuscular components of the teeth, jaws, head, and neck. I wanted to change that.”

Driven by a passion for deeper understanding, Dr. Daia pursued an intensive residency in  Temporomandibular

Joint Disorder (TMD) and Orofacial Pain at the University at Buffalo,  culminating in a Master’s degree in Oral Sciences in 2010. “Engaging in research, from basic science to clinical trials, gave me a deep appreciation for evidence-based medicine,” he says. “It  taught me how to critically analyze medical literature and apply the most advanced  technologies and scientific discoveries to help my patients.”

His thirst for knowledge didn’t stop there. Seeking to make an even greater impact, Dr. Daia continued his training with an additional residency in Orthodontics and Dentofacial  Orthopedics, also at the University at Buffalo, completing it in 2014.

“I was searching for a way to positively influence patients’ growth, development, and airway health, while staying true to my understanding of head and neck biomechanics,” he reflects.

“After spending time with oral surgery and orthodontic departments, I realized orthodontics  was the answer—it allowed me to combine all my passions for medicine, engineering, and art.”

Dr. Daia stands among an elite few practitioners worldwide. He is a Diplomate of both the  American Board of Orthodontics and the American Board of Orofacial Pain, as well as a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada— prestigious distinctions that reflect not only his unparalleled expertise but also his unwavering commitment to the highest standards of patient care. “Achieving diplomate status in these fields signifies that I have earned the recognition of my peers and exceeded the necessary skills to provide the best patient care in the field,” he says. “It comes with great responsibility, but it’s my superpower— aligning the understanding of  biomechanics, tooth movement, and jaw function with the neurophysiology of pain, ultimately  achieving orthopedic balance and optimal health.” His expertise spans complex conditions such as TMJ dysfunction, sleep apnea, and orofacial pain, areas in which specialists are scarce.  “Witnessing the profound impact of my work on patients’ lives inspired me to create a center of excellence, a powerhouse, dedicated to serving the community with the highest standards available,” Dr. Daia adds. His rare combination of certifications and his relentless dedication to improving his patients’ health, function, and quality of life truly set him apart in the field.

What truly sets Dr. Daia apart is not only his incredible expertise but also the thoughtful, caring human he is. “I’m deeply captivated by beauty, whether it’s in the form of a smile, a sunset, or a piece of art,” he shares. This love for beauty is reflected throughout his practice—his office overlooks the serene Clinton River, offering breathtaking sunrises over Lake Angelus, and houses over 70 pieces of original artwork. “Art brings life to our walls and ceilings,” he explains,  “reminding us that life, though imperfect, can still be made beautiful, just like art.” Beyond his professional life, Dr. Daia is a proud father of seven children, with the recent blessing of his sixth daughter. Family is at the core of who he is, rooted deeply in faith and love. He stays active, whether exploring the outdoors or practicing jiu-jitsu, always striving to remain grounded. His passion for humanity and his heartfelt desire to make the world a better place shine through in everything he does. “It’s not just about improving smiles,” Dr. Daia says. “It’s  about making a lasting impact on people’s lives.”

Dr. Daia’s dedication to excellence in patient care has earned him the recognition as a Top Dentist in Detroit multiple times. “We treat every patient as we would want our family members treated,” he says, a philosophy that drives his practice. In 2011, he authored Low  Level Laser Therapy for Management of Temporomandibular Disorders, a groundbreaking book that explores non-invasive treatments for TMD. This work is an invaluable resource, offering insights into the conservative, highly effective treatments that are available for TMD sufferers.  “TMD and TMJ pain are mostly benign and treatable,” Dr. Daia explains. “With the right  diagnosis and understanding of the condition’s underlying causes, most treatments are non-invasive and focused on improving the patient’s quality of life.”

involved with the executive board of local nonprofits. His efforts have focused on providing education to underserved populations, offering career training, crime prevention, and home safety initiatives. His passion for giving back is deeply embedded in his life philosophy, as he continuously strives to make a meaningful difference in both his community and the wider world.

“It’s not just about improving smiles,” Dr. Daia says.
“It’s about making a lasting impact on people’s lives.”

In 2016, Dr. Daia took over the practice founded by Dr. William Molloy in 1975, inheriting a legacy of exceptional orthodontic care. “To date, we were able to provide 50 years of service to our Rochester community,” Dr. Daia shares. Dr. Daia’s commitment to preserving Dr. Molloy’s renowned patient care and exemplary bedside manners has been paramount. At the same time, he has infused his own professional expertise, particularly in the areas of TMD,  headaches, and TMJ pain, enhancing the practice’s offerings with a holistic approach to orthodontics. “It’s not only about teeth. Patients’ overall health, airway, and function has to take priority. Followed by facial aesthetics, and smile alignment,” says Dr. Daia. By blending the tradition of outstanding orthodontic service with innovative treatments for orofacial pain, Dr.  Daia continues the mission of providing the highest standards of care.

Dr. Daia’s commitment to service extends well beyond his practice. He has dedicated countless  hours to charitable endeavors, including volunteering for wilderness search and rescue, serving  as a safety instructor for Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources, and being actively

Looking to the future, Dr. Daia envisions Daia Orthodontics continuing to be a leader in both orthodontics and orofacial pain management, expanding its ability to serve the community for decades to come. As the practice embraces new technologies, such as the iCat Flex 17 Scanner and iTero Lumina 5D, and integrates cutting-edge orthodontic tools like Damon Ultima brackets and Invisalign, it is poised for growth. Dr. Daia is also focused on creating educational programs to help patients develop healthy habits and working with his medical and dental colleagues to advance care across multiple disciplines.

At Daia Orthodontics, the vision is clear: to create lasting, positive change in the lives of patients, not just through excellent orthodontic results but by impacting overall health and well-being in profound and meaningful ways.

The

Story

of O’Connor’s Public House

O'Connor's

Public House

If you’ve ever stepped through the front door of O’Connor’s Public House on Main Street, you know immediately, this isn’t just another pub with a green neon sign and a Guinness poster on the wall. This is something much more authentic, more soulful. It’s a feeling in the floors, the walls, the air itself. It’s a heartbeat that connects a late1800s building in Rochester to the rolling green hills of Ireland.

But how did this little piece of the Emerald Isle end up right here in downtown Rochester?

The story of O’Connor’s begins with a dream—a dream inspired by one of Ireland’s most iconic pubs, Gus O’Connor’s in Doolin, Ireland. Known for its warm hospitality, lively music, and rich tradition, Gus O’Connor’s wasn’t just a bar; it was a community hub, a living room for the town. That spirit was exactly what original founder Kevin VanDyke, now business partner to Dimitry Goyfman, wanted to recreate in Rochester.

“In 2005, there were no Irish pubs in Downtown Rochester, and we believed that every great community with a beautiful downtown deserves an authentic Irish pub. A place that brings culture, hospitality, and a true gathering space for people from all walks of life,” says Dimitry.

When VanDyke stumbled across the historic building that would become O’Connor’s, it felt like fate. A structure dating back to the late 1800s? It was the perfect canvas to create something timeless. But not just any Irish pub would do. He was determined to get it right, no shortcuts, no cheap imitations.

To bring that vision to life, they turned to the Prairie Pub Company, one of only five builders in the world officially certified by Guinness to construct authentic Irish pubs. Prairie Pub specializes in gathering salvaged materials like stained glass windows, worn wood, and wrought iron from old pubs and churches across Ireland, and giving them new life.

At O’Connor’s, every inch tells a story. The ironwork gleams with a history that predates most of the town’s streets. The stained-glass windows cast a kaleidoscope of colors over tables and conversations. The bric-a-brac on the shelves isn’t just decoration; it’s a curated collection of relics pulled from Ireland itself. Even the original wood floors underfoot have a history older than most, dating back 100 years. To the historic brick wall separating the bar and dining room, which was once the building’s original exterior wall.

“When you walk through our doors,” Dimitry says, “we want you to feel like you’ve actually stepped into Ireland. Every detail was chosen to tell a story.”

But beyond the beautiful setting, what truly makes O’Connor’s special is how it has become a vibrant part of the Rochester community, much like local pubs are woven into everyday life in towns across Ireland.

Kevin and Dimitry both grew up nearby. Rochester wasn’t just a good business decision; it was home. They wanted to build something that would endure, a place where generations could gather to mark milestones, catch up over pints, and make memories that stick around long after the last round is called.

“We wanted to create something truly special for the community, a pub that would stand the test of time, just like so many beloved Irish pubs in Ireland,” says Dimitry.

Today, nearly 20 years later, it’s clear they succeeded. O’Connor’s isn’t just a pub. It’s part of the fabric of Rochester.

Of course, no true Irish pub would be complete without a menu that speaks to the stomach as much as the heart. Dimitry and Kevin didn’t just Google a few Irish recipes; they boarded planes and spent time in Ireland’s pubs, studying what real Irish food looks—and tastes—like.

“During the planning stages, we made multiple trips to Ireland, studying authentic pubs and traditional dishes firsthand. Even today, we regularly research pubs in Ireland and review their menus to stay connected to what’s being served there” shares Dimitry.

One of their most authentic dishes is the Boxty—an Irish potato pancake filled with a variety of savory ingredients. But due to both owners’ love of traveling, the community may notice dishes on the menu that are inspired by different cultures or countries,” Says Dimitry.

So while you’ll find classics like Guinness Stew and Shepherd’s Pie on the menu, you might also notice a few global twists, a nod to the

universal appeal of Irish pubs around the world. “O’Connor’s has become woven into the culture of Rochester, and we are proud of the strong bond we share with our community” shares Dimitry.

Through every challenge—including the Main Street Makeover Project that tore up much of downtown and the crushing impact of the COVID19 pandemic—the Rochester community stood by O’Connor’s. And O’Connor’s stood by them, too.

“WHEN YOU WALK THROUGH OUR DOORS,” DIMITRY SAYS, “WE WANT YOU TO FEEL LIKE YOU’VE ACTUALLY STEPPED INTO IRELAND. EVERY DETAIL WAS CHOSEN TO TELL A STORY.”

The pub isn’t just a place to eat and drink, it’s a true partner to the community. O’Connor’s regularly works with local fire and police departments, supports area schools, and partners with organizations like the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to fight childhood cancer. Food drives, fundraising events, and grassroots initiatives find a ready and willing home inside these historic walls.

“Our bond with Rochester is strong,” Dimitry says proudly. “We’ve grown together.”

I believe it’s very important to evolve and grow alongside the community you’re part of. Over time, things change—people’s needs and expectations shift—and it’s crucial to adapt while staying true to your roots, shares Dimitry. Two outdoor patios have been added, offering perfect spots for summer pints. Restoration projects have refreshed and preserved the pub’s historic elements, making the space even more versatile for hosting weddings, wakes, birthday parties, and community events.

Spend an evening here and you’ll understand. It’s in the stories traded over Guinness. It’s in the laughter at the bar. It’s in the Irish music that occasionally breaks out, stirring something familiar and wild in the heart.

O’Connor’s Public House isn’t just about recreating Ireland. It’s about capturing the spirit of home—whether you’re from County Clare or right down the road in Rochester Hills. It’s about providing a place where you can be exactly who you are, where you are always welcome, where every visit feels like a homecoming.

Nearly two decades on, O’Connor’s stands as a living testament to the power of vision, authenticity, and community spirit. And if you ask anyone who’s ever pulled up a chair here, they’ll tell you: it’s not just a pub.

It’s Rochester’s very own slice of Ireland—and we’re lucky to have it.
