ay in Michigan brings the real feel of the arrival of spring to Rochester Hills. The second Sunday of May each year brings the arrival of Mother’s Day with it’s countless reminders, reflections and guiding examples of strong women who have shaped the lives of their children and grandchildren, and enriched the lives of others in our community.

My mother, Sherry Feldman has been a strong and devoted parent to my sister and me for over 45 years. She is a grandmother who cherishes every opportunity to nurture and spoil her four wonderful grandchildren. She is also a retired school teacher of over 1,000 Rochester Hills students for 28 years at Brooklands Elementary. It’s a good bet many readers or readers’ children had my mother as their elementary school teacher.

ne of the beautiful things about golf is that it can truly be a lifelong activity. Getting introduced to the game correctly can have a huge impact on a golfer's enjoyment and future success. Here are a few things we have discovered are important to remember when coaching and parenting developing junior golfers. 1. Kids are constantly changing. Growth spurts, attitude adjustments and developing personalities make it challenging to keep up. As a parent or coach, it is important to remember first and foremost: kids are kids, so let them be just that. Kids are full of curiosity, passion for the small things and are learning an amazing amount of knowledge each day! 2. Avoid negativity. It can be very easy to notice every fault that your child is making. Often, it is only because we are trying to help them be the very best they can be. Despite good intentions, we need to be sure that we are noticing the successes as much as we do the failures. As a rule of thumb, be sure to recognize five successes for every one fault. 3. Have patience. Just like anything else that is worth it, progression in golf can take time. Be patient with your young golfers. Learn to love the different stages of their learning. 4. Track progression. This comes right after having patience because the two go hand in hand. By tracking progression, it will allow you to measure your child’s development and help them recognize their improvements. Not only does this help you to maintain your patience, but it also helps your junior golfer maintain their motivation to keep moving forward. 5. Live the example you set. Being a parent or coach, we spend a lot of time handing out advice to our children about how and what to be. For this advice to be listened to, we need to “walk our talk.” If we are preaching about having honest, genuine, and sportsmanlike qualities, we need to be setting this example in our daily actions. Remember that kids watch everything you do, hear everything you say and will shape themselves based on what they see in the way you carry yourself. I have found some of my most rewarding moments with the children that I coach at the Twin Lakes Golf Academy. I am grateful to have learned these things from interacting with these awesome junior golfers and hope we can all strive to help young children grow to their greatest and most rewarding potentials. Whether it is the endless five-star reviews or the colorful, whimsical storefront that beckons you in, Elizabeth Aprea, founder and formulator of Moon River Soap Company, is doing something right. Aprea believes when owning a business, it starts with a genuine passion for your business. “I really love studying the properties of botanicals and what they can do for your skin and body," Aprea says. "I love to formulate and create products.” What sets Moon River Soap Company apart from other soap and skin care lines is they only use essential oils without any fragrance or synthetic preservatives. With fragrance being the number one dermal irritant and essential oils healing the skin, Moon River Soap Company products not only avoid irritating the skin but also aim to heal while in catering to all skin types. Aprea has a love for serving her customers. She even came up with a motto, “Stellar sellers.” “You are only as good as the worst product on your shelf, so keep working on improving or editing it out altogether," Aprea says. "If it is not something the customer is going to buy again, then it is not a ‘stellar seller.’ Once you get the product just right it is an awesome feeling.” That awesome feeling abounds when customers return for her unique soaps. Aprea decided to make Rochester Hills the place to hang her hat. The location matched her type of customer: educated and health-conscious. “We were so lucky to be able to find a downtown location with foot traffic,” Aprea says. They still welcome walk-ins on a daily basis, but their regulars keep the foot traffic moving directly towards their unique store. From the thoughtful packaging of their products to the product itself and superb customer care, it is clear that Aprea’s awareness for every minute detail is paying off. In 2012 her husband took over the soap-making end of the business, producing 200 pounds of soap every other day. The days in between making soap he is lining and prepping molds, cutting the soap and preparing wholesale orders while Aprea formulates the recipes and make all the balms, oils and other products. With a nod to her husband and their partnership she says, “I am fortunate we work so well together.” In addition to the smart and savvy female business owner that she is, Aprea always tries to see things through her customers’ eyes. “No matter what business you are in, whether you are selling soup or soap, you need to offer something your customer will make a special trip to come back for,” she says. Aprea has whipped up the perfect recipe for a business owner's success—great products combined with her warmth and attention, making Moon River Soap Company a place where customers can go for healthy skin and superb customer care.

As you enter a branch of AR Workshop in Northville, a banner reads “Creativity is intelligence having fun.” — Einstein Friends and owners Jen Amin, Jen Perino and Kim Berlin have created this all-star, all-female entrepreneurial endeavor—a do it yourself workshop-boutique. After a successful run in Northville, Rochester Hills will soon be home to their second boutique in the heart of downtown. Berlin has always loved DIY and has been creating projects for sale in markets and online for years. Maureen Anders (the “A”) and Anders Ruff (The “R”) originally founded a design company in 2010. With a vision to create inspiring and charming boutique workshops, they joined forces with longtime friends to open up a new branch in Rochester Hills. Amin carries a business background, and Perino lends therapy to the mix. Add Berlin’s crafty and science background, and you have a hodgepodge of talent crafting up a successful female-owned business. DIY classes include, but are not limited to wood signs, canvas pillows, wall hangings and more. AR Workshop offers ongoing workshops from creating your very own Michigan home state sign, centerpieces, oversized wood-framed signs and boxes or wood-framed signs that you can adorn with your family’s name. AR Workshop will also gladly host your next private party. Too small of a group for a party of 15? You can reserve a table or two for you and your friends. Most adult projects range from $50-75, and children's projects range from $3040. AR Workshop provides all of the materials, tools, instruction and fun. The newly opened boutique store Tutus & Tendus, founded by former professional dancer Cindy Raffel, arrived just in time for dance recital season. A “tendu,” for those who are unfamiliar with dance terminology, is a stretched or held movement. Tutus & Tendus is a full-service dancewear, shoe and accessory store and Raffel’s customers are thrilled. “Finally, I don't have to leave town when I need an emergency pair of tights or a hairnet…a gorgeous store with a great selection of basics, fancy things and accessories. This is an excellent addition to downtown Rochester,” one customer says. This one-stop shop for all things dance-related was created out of a need for a local dancewear store. Rochester Hills boasts a bevy of opportunities for dance. From dance studios to musical theater opportunities and barre classes, this boutique can serve everyone’s needs. Tutus & Tendus’ dancewear is not limited to gender or age and includes plus sizes. If you dance and there is something you need, Tutus & Tendus will not disappoint. If you don’t dance and simply love the hot, trendy look of everyday dancewear, Tutus & Tendus has got you covered. They also take special orders. hange in real estate is inevitable. In the past, we saw the baby boomers purchasing their first homes for zero down, $500 closing costs, $150 monthly payments and prices under $20,000. So began the great real estate expansion—from 900-square-foot ranch-style homes to spacious two-story 3,000, 4,000 and even 5,000-square-foot Tudors and colonials and, of course, estate-sized mansions up to 20,000 and 30,000 square feet, priced in the millions. As we see that generation aging, many decide it’s time to enjoy the fruits of their labors and seek carefree living in condominium and retirement-style properties and communities, while also owning smaller properties in “up north” recreational homes and down south warm climate winter homes. Their desire is to downsize, but they do not want to sacrifice luxury and convenience, they seek to remain close to retail, dining and fitness facilities and have enough room for children and grandchildren to visit “but not stay!” And for those who have not yet started this process, we see millennials moving back in with their parents for certain periods of time for both convenience and economic reasons. Many boomers are happy to extend those relationships for years as it adds excitement and vigor to their lives. 24

otary started with the vision of one man: Paul Harris. The Chicago attorney formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on February 23, 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas, form meaningful lifelong friendships and give back to their communities. Until 1989, the constitution and bylaws of Rotary International stated that Rotary membership was for males only. However, on May 4, 1987, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Rotary clubs may not exclude women from membership on the basis of gender. Rotary issued a policy statement that any Rotary club in the United States can admit qualified women into membership, and the 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the organization's history. “ My fellow delegates, I would like to remind you that the world of 1989 is very different to the world of 1905. I sincerely believe that Rotary has to adapt itself to a changing world,” Frank J. Devlyn, who would become Rotary International president from 2000-2001, says. Today, Rotary connects 1.2 million members from more than 34,000 Rotary clubs in 200 countries and geographical areas.
