The Men in our Lives Matter!
Have you ever wondered, “Do fathers matter? What differences do I make in my home as a dad?” Let’s start with the simple answer — the importance of a father is tremendous! Fathers make countless differences in their home and family. However, how much impact you decide to make as a dad is entirely up to you!
A father’s gifts of quality time, life-giving words, and positive actions have a long-lasting impact on his children.
As I reflect on fatherhood this month, here are just a few of the ways dads can build up their home:
• A father’s strength can be powerful
• A dad’s words can be fueling and inspirational
• Hugs from a dad can be deeply comforting
• A dad’s smile can instill joy and confidence
• Time with a dad can be fun and productive
• A dad’s physicality can be challenging
• A dad’s guidance can be life-changing and foundational
• A father’s correction can be lifesaving and life-giving
• Adventures with a dad can be exciting and memorable
Let your father or a father figure in your life know how much he matters to you. And if you are a dad, let us be the first to say - thank you. You are invaluable to the people who know and need you as well as the community around you.
Special thanks and gratitude goes out to the Fathers of my children! Lance and Bradley - wishing you a very Happy Father's Day! Our children are truly blessed!

DISCOVERING THE SPIRITS OF THE WEST
Slow down. Take the trail. Heighten your spirits! Use the Colorado Spirits Trail this summer for your next adventure!
ARTICLE BY GLENNA HOPE
Whiskey clubs and vacations designed around hitting distilleries has become all the rage for our Colorado men. Maybe you’ve even taken a trip and traveled the Kentucky Bourbon Trail or the Tennessee Whiskey Trail. Did you know that it wasn’t until 2004 that Stranahan’s Mountain Whiskey became Colorado’s first (legal) distillery since Prohibition? Colorado may have come late to the party, but no one cares if you’re late when you bring good whiskey. However, now’s the time to plan one right here in Colorado.

As our craft distillers push their imaginations to new heights, the Colorado Spirits Trail leads you through 14,000-foot peaks, clear mountain streams, historic mining towns, and legendary hiking, biking, fishing, climbing, camping, and skiing areas. Nothing heightens the spirits like a tasting flight of whiskey, a dram of gin, or a carefully crafted cocktail at one of our distilleries, whether taken alone or as part of a larger journey.
What’s the secret to getting all these tasty treats? According to the Colorado Distillers Guild, there is a solution. You’ll find a treasure map of surprising flavors, great cocktails, and a team of passionate people pouring their souls into barrels and bottles across Colorado on the Colorado Spirits Trail.
Colorado boasts one of the largest and most vibrant distilling communities in the country. To inspire the discovery of spirits pioneered by some of the most creative makers in the industry, over 40 Colorado craft distilleries have joined together to create the Colorado Spirits Trail app.
Once I shared this information about the Colorado Spirits Trail with my husband Bill and his friend Calvin, they stated, “We’re up for the challenge! We can easily complete this trail in a summer. With Colorado being 380 miles long and 280 miles wide, this challenge seems worth taking to support our local distilleries.”
HOW IT WORKS
Download the Colorado Spirits Trail app on an iOS or Android device and create a free account to begin participating in the passport program. Trailblazers will be rewarded for visiting and checking into participating app distilleries. Each time you check in to a distillery, you’ll receive a passport stamp for that location.
• After 10 passport stamps you’ll receive an official Colorado Spirits Trail t-shirt.
• For every 5 distillery visits, you’ll receive a new virtual passport badge and one entry into the grand prize drawing for a Chaffee County Spirits Enthusiast Getaway.
THE GRAND PRIZE DRAWING INCLUDES:
• Two-night stay at the Surf Hotel & Chateau in Buena Vista.
• Private tour for two at Deerhammer Distillery & Woods Distillery.
• Two exclusive Whiskey Flights at The Slammer.
• The drawing will take place on Friday, February 2, 2024. The last day to receive an entry into the drawing is 11:59 p.m. MST on Wednesday, January 31, 2024.
• Grand prize drawing winner must provide transportation.
• Prize exclusions may apply.
• Passport holders have two years from the date of their first stamp to complete the trail. After two years, their stamps will expire and they will begin a new passport.
“In the end, the Colorado Spirits Trail is all about the people, just as the spirits themselves are all about the people. Colorado’s distillers and owners are teams and individuals. CHEERS!”

MUST BE AT LEAST 21 YEARS OF AGE TO PARTICIPATE. NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. PLEASE ENJOY RESPONSIBLY.
The idea behind the Colorado Spirit Trail is to redefine the American frontier and invite novices and connoisseurs alike to experience our innovative spirits across the Eastern Plains and the Western Slope, through the bustling cities of the Front Range, and the snowy peaks of the Rockies.
Use the trail map feature to build a Google Maps itinerary to link as many of the 40+ distilleries as you dare. But double-check your route, as the itinerary planner can send you on some wandering loops. Verify tasting room and tour hours before you go. And, of course, always take a designated driver.

THE WHY BEHIND THE COLORADO DISTILLERS GUILD
The Colorado Distillers Guild (CDG) is a non-profit association promoting the licensed distilling industry in Colorado. It serves to educate the general public about Colorado distillers and provide valuable information to its members regarding laws, provisions, directives, and orders as may be made by the United States government, the State of Colorado, and the political subdivisions thereof serving the association.

Eye Pieces of Basalt
Establish
your luxury and sport eyewear collection to express more of who you are.
ARTICLE BY CASSANDRA GREEN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDEDEye Pieces is a Colorado-based company that was founded in Vail. They provide unique luxury and high-quality prescription optics for their customers. In May, they opened a brand new location in the Roaring Fork Valley with a full-service lab for optical and prescription needs. An in-house optical lab allows them to prepare customer glasses in a timely fashion, making every customer’s experience that much more efficient and personal.
I had the opportunity to meet with the team at Eye Pieces and witness first-hand their eye for innovation within optics. It is something Basalt can truly
be proud of. Their eyewear comes in a wide range of product assortment. They bring a diverse blend of sports and luxury eyewear that is functional as well as an expression of fashion and lifestyle. To name just a few brands, but surely not all, they carry Chrome Hearts, Jacques Marie Mage, Mykita, Krewe, Oakley, Maui Jim, Tom Ford, and Vuarnet.
Marketing Manager Dani Barry says, “We consider our customers to be very dynamic in every aspect of their life and we want to reflect that and bring value to their sport, fashion, lifestyle, etc.” I have to say, they do just that.

Kevin Mayer is an optician and brings his entire career of over 40 years in optical and sales to the team. He was proud to say, “I can honestly say, this is the most diverse product selection in the valley. There really is something for everybody at every level. From our locals who need a pair of glasses desperately to a person looking for fine eyewear, we really have it all!”
He emphasizes their state-of-theart digital grinding in their lenses, and how they carry just about every possible type of lens out there. They even add prescriptions to sports goggles and have a diverse line to match your athletic lifestyle. This team at Eye Pieces takes quality to the next level of excellence.
Dani says, “We love curating unique world-class selections for eyewear.” If you love fashion but also have a very active lifestyle, Eye Pieces is the place for you.

It was inspiring to hear from Cira Mylott as well. She was born and raised in Basalt and has several years of experience as an optician.
Cira says, “I love the optical world. It’s an intimate setting. When it comes to wearing your glasses, it speaks to your personality and style. I enjoy helping people feel confident as they pick out frames. I want you to feel like you’re shopping with a friend.”
Eye Pieces Manager Matt Swanson adds, “It’s like we’re a stylist. We see eyewear as a piece of your personality. It’s an expression of yourself. It can be something that is very tonal and subtle for less attention, or it can be a personality piece of vibrant color, style, and shape.”
As a local, second homeowner in Basalt, or a visitor just stopping by, Eye Pieces has everything you need. They have frames for when you go hiking, attend a nice event or dinner, or simply are out and about for the day. They also have prescription goggles to match your active lifestyle. You can also add custom tints to match that specific style or outfit you have in mind.
A customer testimonial reaffirms their integrity to put customers first, "I would not go anywhere but Eye Pieces for my vision in framing needs. The staff is professional, knowledgeable, and efficient. I am always pleased throughout the year with my purchase!"
If you’re in need of new glasses, want to buy goggles or sport sunglasses for your active lifestyle, or are in search of a new statement piece for your eyewear collection, don’t hesitate to visit the new store in the Willits Town Center. This team is the best in the world, and they have world-class products and services to prove it. You can also check them out online at eyepieces.com and follow them on Instagram @eyepeices1984.

Biking is Back
RACE AND SOCIALIZE WITH THE ASPEN CYCLING CLUB

Cycling is often seen as an individual sport—and many use biking to have some alone time or set personal goals—but there is something important to be said about biking within a community. Whether you are new to biking or a seasoned cyclist, the Aspen Cycling Club is a great community to bring this solo activity into a social space.
WHY THE CLUB STARTED
The Aspen Cycling Club was started 39 years ago by avid bikers who wanted to do what they loved: bike! The club’s Managing Director, Kristen Heath, shares, “We encourage everyone to get out on their bike. We love biking and want to share that passion!” The club has

many types of members and many benefits to the community. Some members use this club to advance their skills through clinics and races, whereas other members join the club to become more confident in their biking abilities and to meet other bikers at their same level. “One of the biggest reasons people don’t want to race is due to intimidation,” Heath says. “We want everyone to feel included and to experience the support and the strong community feel that is our club, so we are trying to offer a wide selection of activities.”
WHAT THE CLUB DOES
While it has become one of the premier cycling clubs in the country, the events remain community-powered through the generosity of volunteers, business sponsors, and individual donors throughout the 16-week schedule. “We ride every Wednesday night from May 17th to September 6th, and there are four waves of riders for different experience levels,” Heath says. “On Sundays, we offer a free social ride to the Maroon Bells, and other nights, we offer free skills clinics and maintenance clinics, plus we have a trails day in which all of our members work on a designated trail; we firmly believe if we use the trails, we also need to maintain them!” The Aspen Cycling Club puts on road and mountain bike races of their own each year. Heath announces, “New this year will be a Gran Fondo—Italian for “big ride”—on July 8th. There are three distances to choose from: 30, 60, or 100 miles, and the ride is supported, meaning it has water, food, and toilets along the way. Then, there will be a finish line party at the end!”
HOW TO JOIN

Interested bikers can visit aspencyclingclub.org to learn more about events and to register. The club is currently offering women 50% off registration with code FEMALE50. Also, youth under 18 are offered a free membership.

The Perfect Steak
ARTICLE BY CASEY WEBER, TALL GRASS MEAT COMPANYNothing describes summer better than a good cookout! And what is a cookout without a good, quality steak and the perfect grilling recipe?
1. Thaw and acclimate the steak. For searing to occur, the proteins in steak need to be heated to at least 310°F. Tossing cold meat onto a hot grill lowers the temperature and can prevent a crust from forming, so it’s important that any frozen steaks are thawed completely before cooking.
2. Salt your steak 30-45 minutes before grilling. This causes the salt to draw moisture from within the steak up to the surface, where it dissolves the salt and creates a brine that gets reabsorbed into the steak where it breaks down tough connective tissues.
3. Oil the grate on the grill, not the steak. Use tongs and a paper towel dipped in vegetable oil to lube your grates.
4. Manage your heat well. Remember that your grill needs to be hot for your steak to get a good sear. But if it’s hot enough to cause your oil to smoke, it’s too hot.

5. Use the 60/40 rule. The best-tasting steaks are seared on both sides and cooked evenly in the middle. The simplest way to do that is to only flip your steak once. The 60/40 rule suggests that 60% of your cook time should be spent on one side, and 40% on the other.
6. Keep the lid closed. It may be tempting to peek, but trust the experts and keep it shut! Opening the lid makes your grill lose heat, which makes steaks cook unevenly.
7. Check for doneness. A meat thermometer will give you the most accurate temperature reading:
• Rare: 120°F
• Medium Rare: 130°F
• Medium: 140°F
• Medium Well: 150°F
• Well: 160°F
8. Let your steak rest. Pull your steaks from the grill once they’re cooked to 5-10 degrees below your target temperature and rest for 10-15 minutes.

A Perfect Gents Cocktail Share
Mix yourself up this popular men's go-to recipe from The Pullman.
If you’re looking for a smoky drink but you’re tired of relying on whiskey to do the job, The Pullman has you covered with this refreshing yet smoky mezcal-based cocktail. Glenwood Springs’ American eatery, The Pullman, is always exploring new and imaginative ways to pair unique drinks with their top-notch food and service, and they do so without getting too complicated along the way. The Pullman’s main bar and the general manager, Franz Garcia, shares the recipe for their favorite men’s go-to drink, the Smoky Haze, saying, “We always like to think outside the box, but we keep things simple and sustainable while executing it well.” With only three basic ingredients and three easy steps, anyone can make a Smoky Haze at home.
While The Pullman is a fan of Madre Mezcal, you can use any mezcal that tickles your fancy, just keep in mind: the simpler the better. It then doesn’t get simpler than adding in the simple syrup—an easy one-part water, one-part sugar ratio if you want to make it from home sustainably—and some lime juice. And finally, the garnish of smoked paprika with more lime is what makes this drink so special without going over the top. Garcia notes, “I am a big Mezcal fan and what I particularly like about this drink is how simple it is to make—it is simple but unique, like The Pullman.” While the Smoky Haze started as an imaginative experiment, it has become a favorite Pullman original cocktail that you can now make at home for a guys’ night, a party, or a relaxing night in.

INGREDIENTS:
• 3 oz Mezcal
• 1 oz Simple Syrup
• Pressed Lime Juice
• Smoked Paprika
• Lime Wedge
DIRECTIONS:
01. Add mezcal, simple syrup, and lime juice into a cocktail shaker.
02. Shake with ice, then strain and pour over a large ice cube.
03. Garnish with smoked paprika and a lime wedge.
