Our February Issue issue is dedicated to man’s best friend. Dogs have a way of making us feel special, and their loyalty and sense of wonder are refreshing. In this issue, there will not be a shortage of inspirational articles for all things dogs. One of our favorite recipes for making your dog his very own homemade birthday cake with frosting is sure to delight. (All of which are healthy and dog-friendly.) Not to mention great dog-approved hikes around town that are beneficial for both of you. Heading into our second month of 2023, we hope you can take some time to relax and spend time with the ones you love. With hectic schedules starting to pick up again, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We just must be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love and that fill us up. One of which certainly includes our beloved pets. Are you looking for volunteer opportunities and get exercise at the same time? Colorado Animal Rescue in Glenwood Springs has dog walking opportunities every day of the week from 9:30am to 10:30am and 10:30am to 11:30am. Both Aspen Mountain’s Silver Queen Gondola and Snowmass Ski Area’s Elk Camp Gondola permit pooches. Pawprint-marked cabins mean Fido can ride inside. Once up top, dogs can join their owners on mountain-top hikes and also dine al fresco on the Sundeck* or Elk Camp patios. For dogs looking to earn their ride, owners and their dogs who hike up Aspen or Snowmass can also hitch a gondola down, for no charge.

Dog-Fr iend ly Bi r thd ay C a ke Re c ipe CAKE INGREDIENTS: • 2 eggs • 1/2 cup peanut butter (spread or pure) • 1/4 cup oil (canola, vegetable) • 2/3 cup milk (or water) • 1/3 cup honey or maple syrup (or apple sauce or skip it) • 2 1/2 cup shredded carrot (2 large) • 2 cups whole wheat / whole meal flour (or white flour) • 2 1/2 tsp baking soda DOG-FRIENDLY FROSTING INGREDIENTS: • 600–700g / 1.2 - 1.4lb potatoes, peeled, cut into chunks • 3/4–1 cup yogurt (plain unsweetened) or water CAKE INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 180C/350F (160C fan). 2. Grease and line the base of 2 20cm/8” cake pans. 3. Whisk together eggs, peanut butter, oil, honey and milk (a few peanut butter lumps ok). 4. Stir in carrots, then add flour and baking soda. Stir until just combined (over mixing = hard cake = sad birthday pooch). 5. Divide batter between the cake pans, spread and smooth surface. 6. Bake 25 minutes or until skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. 7. Cool on racks. Frost per below. FROSTING INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Boil, steam or microwave potato until very soft. 2. Whip potato and yogurt with an electric beater until fluffy and smooth as possible (won’t go 100% smooth)—about 1 1/2 minutes on medium speed (speed 5). 3. Use water as needed to loosen frosting to soft spreadable consistency (like human buttercream frosting!). Use while warm (it “sets” when it cools). 4. Spread 1/4 frosting on one cake. 5. hiking with your hound Great trails for hiking with your dog

Hiking is a great way to work out with your dog. Here’s our list of six local favorite places where you can both enjoy in the beauty of nature. Remember, whether you are day hiking or planning a longer excursion, make sure your pet is fit, vaccinated and has a microchip and ID tag with up-to-date information. It’s also important to remember that higher altitudes can increase your dog’s dehydration rate. So please be sure to carry enough water for your dog as well as yourself. Enjoy the views!

1. Glenwood Springs Dog Park. The River Trail Dog Park, also called River Dog Run Park and Glenwood Springs Dog Park, is an open area with dog training and playing obstacles along the Rio Grande Trail and Roaring Fork River in Glenwood Springs, CO. The hours of operation are 7 am-9 pm. 2. Carbondale Nature Park. One online review says this is the best park in the country! This 33-acre off-leash nature park is not fenced in but has a large open space for dogs to roam with a running stream for a refreshing drink. Throughout the year there are cows next to the dog park. Keep your pooch under control around other wildlife. Failure to do so may lead to fines. 3. Confluence Park, Basalt. Across from the 7-11 (where the road dead-ends by a pedestrian bridge), a short, steep path leads to this undeveloped park. Local dogs

The hike to Crater Lake is a great one for friendly dogs. The trail starts and ends at alpine lakes, giving your pup a chance to hydrate, and most of the hike is under the shade of aspen groves. This trail is very popular, so it’s best suited for more social pooches. Bonus: Leashed dogs are allowed on the shuttle bus from Aspen Highlands to the trailhead. 5. Sunset Trail, New Castle. The Sunset Trail is an easy trail you can hike, run, and mountain bike that is dog-friendly.

IN A DIGITAL WORLD OF EMAILS AND TEXTS, THE SIMPLISTIC, AND ONCE STANDARD “THANK YOU” CARD HAS FADED. Does that mean we are no longer appreciative and grateful for the nice gestures that are extended to us? Absolutely not! We are just caught up in those casual platforms of communication, that we don’t take the time to sit down and give the time and attention to craft our heartfelt thanks in a way that shows purposeful thought. The written word is proof on a page and this is valuable for so many reasons. Gratitude spurns happiness, but thankfulness is tricky; the only way it is known is if it is verbally acknowledged. Writing it down is evidence of that feeling. Putting words on a page is also more intentional than shooting off a text or email. Communicating your thanks in the common, oversimplified fashion isn’t necessarily bad, but setting aside time be “old-fashioned” with pen and paper, demonstrates the value you place on what has been done for you. Plus, handwriting is an extension of who you are as a person. It breathes your life onto the page. It exudes your voice, your spirit and your message in a way that is uniquely yours. A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

USE R EAL ESTATE WISELY

ORGA NIZE BY KIND A ND COLOR

Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, longsleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

NEGATIVE SPACE

Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.

It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.

The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:

Get clear container storage for small bags and purses so you can locate and access them easily.

HIDDEN STOR AGE Hidden storage is a game changer in keeping a closet visually clean. Tuck folded clothes behind closed cabinet doors if the space is multipurpose. The floor-to-ceiling built-ins in Keri’s closet contain folded clothes, athleisure and other items she needs as she gets ready each day. Tuck away the least-used items: Use hidden storage and the very top of the closet for outof-season items and stuff only worn a few times a year.

LIGHTING Lighting is everything in a closet. Gone are the days of dim recessed lighting being sufficient. Consider adding a statement lighting fixture like a chandelier or pendant that provides ample bright lighting to your space, no matter how big or small.

08 M AKE A STATEMENT Why use an armchair when you have room for a sofa? Slide up a stool and colorful area rug to complete the look. If you have excessive wall space, consider a mini gallery wall or a statement wall with wallpaper to polish things off.
