Summer Memories

August 2022 PUBLISHER

Mel Miles | mel.miles@citylifestyle.com PUBLICATION DIR ECTOR

Sarah Miller | Sarah.miller@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sport routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. Wishing you and yours continued treasured times and summer memories before the need to put on your fall sweaters. My sincerest gratitude for your continued love and support,

Summer Time Sun shines on your skin and mine. Until it sets way after nine. Memories made with a cold drink in hand. Moments to cherish with feet in the sand. Everyone laughing smiles on every face. Remember the moments; those were the days. Turn up the music, sing it out loud. Indigo skies, no sign of a cloud. Mutter the words that no one will know. Everlasting memories; where does time go?

Mel and Maylin’s Fairy Garden Recipe Method for the Perfect Day

Step One Find your perfect container. Maylin and Mel had a fun day shopping around some different local thrift stores and found an old wicker chest and just decided to remove the lid.

Magical summer moments were our Publisher and her daughter’s inspiration when they decided to be adventurous and create their very own Fairy Garden. Mel Mile’s daughter Maylin loves to create different and interesting things and Mel is an avid gardener spending most of her free time either traveling or gardening morning, noon, and night. That’s when they both landed on the perfect Mother- Daughter summer vacation activity to make their very own Fairy Garden. Mel shared that from a very young age her children learned to garden because it was important for their early childhood development to continue to grow into adolescents and eventually adulthood. “Making a garden with your children allows them to learn the basics of gardening and plant care. So why not make a Fairy Garden! A DIY Fairy Garden also makes a fun sensory play area for kids. Manipulating and playing with the soil, plants, other natural materials, accessories, and figurines provide much-needed sensory stimulation to the developing child. Besides, playing in the dirt makes you happy–and there is research to prove it.”

1. Potting Soil 2. Peat Moss and other types of Moss

3. Stones, Twine, Twigs, glowing blue rocks, Fairy, House, ladybugs, and other miniatures

4. Small plants, flowers, and succulents from the local nursery. They are very excited to help.

5. Garden tools 6. Twinkle lights

Step Three When planting from new. Lay out the plants first while they are still in their pots. This will help you find the best position before planting. They recommend having the taller plants in the back and the smaller, low-growing plants situated in the front.

Step Four Be creative. Experiment with the placement of all your trinkets, fairy house, etc. Be creative. This is a very fun and creative part not to be rushed.

Step Five Dig In! Once you are happy with your arrangement of everything it’s time to begin. Remove the plants from their containers and begin planting. Use high-quality potting soil that is suitable for your chosen plants and fill to the top of the container so that the plants and pieces are at their best vantage point. Cover all the plant’s roots and soil. Compact the soil especially where any pieces will be placed so they have a solid base to sit on.

Step Six ENJOY! Lastly, introduce your fairy to her new home and enjoy the magic. Have fun, there are no rules in your Fairy Gardening except to have fun. Let your imagination run wild child!

In a world of dating apps, matchmaker Gabriella Aratow offers personalized help for making one of the most important decisions in your life

22

M UST SE E | LOCA L SERV I CE S

Gabriella Aratow has always had a knack for matchmaking. “I was always putting people together long before I knew it could be a career,” “I’ve always liked making introductions. Even in high school and college, I was always thinking about who would be a cute couple.” But in a world of online dating apps, is there still a place for a real-life matchmaker? You bet there is. Gabriella is a professional matchmaker and owner of Aspen-based KIS— Keeper Introduction Services. “A lot of people come to me because they’ve tried the apps and they find them miserable. Some people come to me because they don’t want to be on the apps at all. My personal feeling about the apps is that they can work, but they rarely work. And they’re a lot of work. A lot of work.” Gabriella also reminds us that these apps aren’t as interested in helping people find love and happiness as they are in growing their viewership and brand. “When you look at the business reports of these companies, they never mentioned the word marriage. They never mentioned the word happy relationship. They’re not interested in that; they’re interested in selling advertising to as many eyeballs as they can. So, how did Gabriella turn pro? “It was all very spontaneous,” she says. “I decided I was going to hire a matchmaker. I was all prepared to do it.” But she was caring for an ill parent and watching her savings dwindle. It just wasn’t the right time to focus on something so important. “I thought to myself, what am I doing? The Dalai Lama says, ‘What you what you want for yourself, you should give to another.’ So that’s what I did.”

Gabriella wrote a letter to the matchmaking company she was going to hire for herself and asked them to hire her. “They called me the next day. I went to work for them and very quickly, I became the most successful matchmaker at their company.” In 2020, Gabriella decided to strike out on her own. “I’m so much happier this way because I didn’t like some of the rules and regulations I had to follow working for someone else. Now I make the rules. I’m happier, my clients are happier, and everything’s just more fruitful. I get to have a closer relationship with my clients because there’s no middle person creating the policy. The relationship is now really between me and my client.” Gabriella may be based in Aspen, but her client roster spans across the country, and she even has some international clients—almost exclusively through word-of-mouth referrals. “And they sometimes come in the strangest ways,” she adds. “Someone will call me and say, oh, so and so told me about you, and I won’t even know who it was who referred me. I’ll find out later that they were a friend of someone I matched or something like that. So it’s got this organic growth—people hearing my name and hearing my excellent reputation, and then seeking me out.” But Gabriella doesn’t just hang around waiting for the phone to ring. “I find clients—and candidates to match them with—anyway I can. I do everything from using social media and going on podcasts to asking friends and family and attending networking events. I also use other matchmakers a lot. We also refer candidates to each other in the CONTINUED > AUGUST 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/ROA R I N G F O R K

“I think in a really core way, we all want for someone to come along and say, ‘Here, here’s your person. I think what we all really crave is the right love match. She wants to date, and she wants to find love. I was cast as her matchmaker on the show. “I think in a really core way, we all want for someone to come along and say, ‘Here, here’s your person. I think what we all really crave is the right love match. It’s such a treasure of the world.” And the true personal fulfillment Gabriella

gets from her work is evident. “With every person, I get into a loving relationship, with every couple that gets married, I feel that I’m changing the world. If a butterfly wing halfway around the world alters the course of humanity, then certainly, people finding their beloved to be with for the rest of their life alters the course of humanity.”

Teaching Kids About Kindness Small Gestures To Make Others Smile Use our Kindness To Do Checklist to spread love and joy

With our busy lives, it's easy to lose sight of the little things we can do to make the world a kinder, gentler place. As a result, kids miss out on golden opportunities to emulate kindness and experience its rewards. So, why not set a goal with your kids, and see how many acts of kindness your family can rack up in a single day or week?

I NSP IR E D BY | L IFE + CULTURE

Volunteer for a good cause.

Help someone with yard work.

This is a big one because often grandparents are the ones to initiate calls. So, make your grandparents’ day by giving them a call.

There are many opportunities right in your community. You could volunteer at a soup kitchen, pick up trash at a park, or help with a canned food drive.

Do you know a handicapped or elderly person? Offer to mow, rake, pull weeds, or shovel their snow.

Make a donation.

Help someone with their homework.

Take an extra lunch to school for someone who forgets.

It can be a small monetary donation to a good cause. Or you can donate items you no longer need to a homeless shelter, animal rescue, or toys for tots collection.

Do you know a classmate who struggles in a particular subject? Offer to help them study for a test or to understand a concept for a homework assignment.

When you get to school, ask your teacher to help you find a student who needs it.

Make friends with someone who’s left out.

Buy a friend a candy bar.

Offer your support.

This is a simple way to show your friend you’re thinking of them.

Do you know someone going through a hard time, such as a serious illness or whose parents are going through a divorce? Lend them your shoulder, and offer to listen.

Is there a classmate who’s always standing alone on the playground or who sits alone at lunch? Offer to join that person.

Offer to help out a mom.

Bake cookies for your teacher or boss.

Buy a homeless person a meal.

Show your appreciation by baking their favorite goodies.

If you see someone wandering who clearly looks homeless or is standing on a street corner with a sign, pick up a meal and take it over to them.

Hold the door for someone.

Write an apology to someone you’ve hurt.

Help someone carry something.

This is another super easy gesture that’s sure to be appreciated by someone who’s elderly, disabled, or really anyone.

We’ve all said and done things on occasion that hurts someone’s feelings. So, take ownership of it, and write a heartfelt apology.

When you see someone struggling to carry multiple items or something heavy, offer your assistance.

Visit an elderly neighbor.

Stand up for someone.

Many seniors are shut in because they can no longer drive. Often, even those who do drive don’t get the social interaction they need. Likely, someone in your neighborhood could use some company.

Do you know a student who’s bullied or always left out? Look for an opportunity to tell those who are being judgmental to be a little kinder or that they’re being unfair.

Do a chore for your brother or sister.

Take a neighbors dog for a walk.

Post something nice on the social media page of someone who needs a friend.

Do you know someone with young children? Offer to spend a couple of hours watching and entertaining them while the mom catches up on chores.

Is there a dog in your neighborhood that never gets to go for walks? Be sure to ask about the dog’s energy level, so you’re able to handle it. Also, find out how far it can walk and run to ensure you don’t overexercise the dog, which can be dangerous to dogs’ health.

Do you know someone who no one ever pays attention to? Make that person’s day with a positive comment on their page.

Kindness To-Do Checklist

Call grandparents or great-grandparents.

What a great way to get back in your sibling’s good graces. And although you shouldn’t expect it, who knows, maybe they’ll return the favor sometime.

Offer a compliment. It doesn’t get any easier than this. But don’t offer praise you don’t mean. Otherwise, it’ll come off as disingenuous. Notice what someone is wearing or doing, or think about the person’s personality or something they’ve done. Then offer a compliment that you really mean.

Ente r for a chance to win a geta way to Laguna Beach! Read on for details.

When it comes to prestigious travel hospitality, The Ranch at Laguna Beach is highly regarded by luxury and discerning travel authorities such as Condé Nast, Forbes, and Travel & Leisure for its congenial service, elevated ambiance and reputable guest experience. The upscale, outdoor wellness offerings range from the uniquely designed 9-hole golf course within the canyon setting to the full-time farmer facilitating outstanding local dishes offered on the original homestead of Laguna Beach. With a strong focus on sustainability, the property centers itself on earth-friendly practices such as linecaught seafood from neighboring coves, genuine farm to table ingredients from the Harvest Garden (which guests can tour), recycled glass and composting that return to the sand and dirt on site, and other sustainability measures. When it comes to feasting on the local fare, resident restaurant and bar, Harvest, focuses on organic farming for seasonal breakfast, lunch and dinner options. It boasts beautiful 180-degree views of Aliso Canyon as well as craft cocktails to sip and savor while overlooking the first tee of the golf course. Or, if sand beneath your feet is more your dining style, make the short walk to Aliso beach where you will

find Lost Pier, an elevated eatery serving the likes of warm beignets and coffee in the morning, and ceviche, shrimp rolls and fisherman’s catch fish tacos for lunch. And what would the Laguna Beach culture be without all of the seaside activities? Kayaking, snorkeling and diving, whale and dolphin watching, SUP—you name it, you can experience it. In fact, Laguna Beach is not only the top place in the world to shore dive, but their dolphin community is larger than Florida, Hawaii and the Caribbean combined, thanks to their marine protection program enlisted years ago that attracts marine life to the calm waters and rich kelp to feed on. Take a two-hour guided kayak tour and visit Seal Rock for more sealife observation. Throughout your stay, you of course will want to make your way into town for endless entertainment options of “Laguna flavor.” Visit the community theater, The Laguna Playhouse, where Harrison Ford got his start. Hop on a free trolley and pop from brewpub Laguna Beach Beer Company pouring locally made craft beer, to one of two wine-tasting rooms where McClain Cellars serves award-winning wines from Santa Ynez Valley. Complement your thirst with a variety of cuisines among more than 100 restaurants to choose from. Local favorites include The Royal Hawaiian Fire Grill CONTINUED > AUGUST 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/ROA R I N G F O R K

for a twist on Hawaiian flavors in a tiki-style venue, Las Brisas for its incredible brunch menu and scenic views of Laguna’s Heisler Park overlooking cliffs that resemble the French Riviera, Broadway by Amar Santana for some of the most elevated cuisine you will find from a multi-Top Chef finalist, along with cocktails crafted seasonally by the restaurant’s mixologist. Lastly, The Cliff Restaurant offers one of the best views in the area with all outdoor eating and delicious tacos. Depending on the time of year you visit, you’ll find a wide selection of live music and festivals. Two notable summer festivals include the Pageant of the Masters where famous paintings come to life…literally on human bodies that pose to look like counterparts in the originals, as well as the Sawdust Art & Craft Festival with a focus on locally made crafts. You’ll also find live music at many of the restaurants around town, including Mozambique and The Cliff Restaurant, perfect places to relax and enjoy after exploring the area’s abundant art galleries. Take advantage of First Thursday’s Art Walk year round, often including live paintings and musicians, dance performances and gorgeous art you won’t find anywhere else. Take the free trolleys from gallery to gallery, and be sure to include the Laguna Art Museum, the second oldest museum in the state of California, specializing in California-themed art and artists. A special component to the Laguna Beach art scene is its foundation on ‘en plein air’ paintings, the outdoor painting style that Monet made famous. Every year the Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational attracts painters from around the country to participate in a week’s worth of events, including a two-hour challenge of live painting. In short, Laguna Beach is seven miles of coves and beaches uniquely its own with breathtaking cliffs and recreational canyons and a hippy-loving-self-expression-embracing artist colony that you won’t want to miss in this lifetime.
