In the Valley there is one thing for sure, it’s an community of explorers.

Spring symbolizes new beginnings. Nature reveals it’s beauty through budding trees and flowers, and the fresh temperate air invites us to spend more time outdoors. As we prepare our garden and flowerbeds, new life awakens joy in the beauty of our world and the desire to explore it. And for those of us without a green thumb, the local farmers markets are gearing up for a busy season of visitors to enjoy fresh produce from local farmers.

There are a multitude of diverse spots around town to discover, whether it is a new restaurant with a great patio to enjoy with friends and family, a hiking trail to take in nature and the surrounding scenery or a niche boutique hotel for a relaxing staycation—there is something for everyone.

Sharks and Conservation One Family's Efforts - Now a Three-Generation Legacy ARTICLE BY JOHN STOKES | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN STOKES AND OTHERS

Born in 1973, John Stokes grew up near the golden sands of California and Hawaii. He was introduced to the ocean shortly after he was born and has had a lifelong connection to the ocean and bodies of water throughout his life. Around age five he began snorkeling and free diving and then became SCUBA certified in 1992. He is currently pursuing certification as a Dive Master on the way to obtaining Tech Diver certification. He also holds a Rescue Diver certification.

His diving adventures include Pacific beaches in Hawaii (every island), California, Oregon, Alaska, three

locations in Mexico plus Canada. Gulf of Mexico locations include Texas and Eastern Mexico and he’s completed dives in the Atlantic, including South Carolina.

Inland dives include the Great Lakes and countless rivers around the globe. With experience SCUBA and free diving in three oceans, John has even been on river diving excursions in the Vladimir region of Russia shortly after the close of the Cold war.

He has had a strong interest in sharks from a young age but didn’t see his first shark in the wild until 1992 (the same year his family moved to Grand Junction),

while diving off the coast of Santa Cruz Island in California. A blue shark swam by, made a big circle, then disappeared into a kelp bed. It was: “amazing, curious and harmless, beautiful and graceful!”

John grew up closely acquainted with Ralph Collier who founded the Shark Research Committee in 1963. Ralph was also his dad’s best friend in high school.

Darrell Stokes (John’s dad) is one of the original members of the Committee and has been involved with shark conservation and research projects far and wide ever since.

Ralph Collier is one of the foremost shark biologists in the world. He’s also regarded as the leading authority and top white shark biologist in the Pacific.

They got their start by going out on barges at night, catching sharks and then turning them over to biologists for examination. True pioneers, no doubt. As their scientific studies have advanced, it is now quite rare to find research done by conservationists where sharks are deliberately killed for study purposes. Sharks are often collected from fishing or shark nets where they have become entangled.

Much of what happens to create imbalance in the earth’s ecosystems is caused by humans’ indiscriminate use of resources in irresponsible ways. For example, trawlers dragging the ocean floor for shrimp kill countless other species, often without regard for what is being removed along with the intended species. Terms like sustainably caught and responsibly harvested frequently disregard the often-irreparable harm done to species not considered “threatened”. Truthfully, harvesting just the sexually mature can be as devastating to an ecosystem as dredging a swath that takes every species encountered as in the case of bottom dragging trawlers.

mature of the many species around them to thrive. Humans either take too many mature of a species or act without any selective process to preserve the rest of the ecosystem. It happens on land too.

The point, true responsibility means recognizing the consequences and making corrections to how we interact with nature, especially when we are so dependent upon it. Consider this: the majority of the earth’s oxygen supply is produced by tiny micro-organisms called diatoms in the oceans covering more than 70 percent of our planet’s surface. Like to breathe?

Protecting the oceans is the best way to assure we all get to keep doing that.

Guadeloupe Island is a rustic volcanic formation 180 miles southwest of Ensenada Mexico; a truly amazing place.

It rises 14,000 feet from the ocean floor and ends with 4,000 feet of that mass above sea level. With great cooperation between Mexico and the scientific community, ocean conservation efforts around Guadeloupe Island, continue to make great strides. With a Mexican naval base on the island, it is under constant protection from those who might cause

its ecosystems any harm. As a protected island it is illegal to land there and very difficult to get permission to conduct any research from shore.

Each year the largest female white sharks on earth gather around Guadeloupe Island to find a mate. Females as large as 17-18 feet in length are often seen and some, like two known as Deep Blue and Holla Girl which are 22-23 feet long are rarely seen and estimated to be around 50 years old.

Some wonder how certain sharks can be identified year after year. Researchers have discovered that the mottling of the skin color along the transition between dark and light is as unique to these individual sharks as fingerprints are to humans.

Recently John was interviewed on a local radio program called “That’s Good News”. In the interview he spoke about people’s curiosity toward his shark conservation activities as a long time Western Colorado resident. He told the reporter that his passion for this work is the driving force behind his daily work as a contractor operating in the Grand Valley and Roaring Fork Valley markets. John owns High Valley Enterprises and intends to eventually retire to shark conservation and research.

Joined by his daughter, Lauren Stokes – age 14 - on a recent leopard shark research project, they now share a three-generation legacy of caring for some of nature’s greatest wonders. Her dad says, “she’s all in”.

John visits Guadeloupe Island every year, except 2018 when a heavy storm caused 16 foot seas and 2020, when COVID restrictions broke that pattern. John travels to Guadeloupe Island with Islander Charters, the premier boat featured on the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week and numerous other shows on National Geographic, History and Discovery Channels.

A friend who has been on several expeditions to Guadeloupe Island with John, Matt Sabo, shared this quote from John: “Look what we’ve done to creation. Take a few moments and reflect on how poorly we treat one another. When compared to swimming with the sharks, honestly, what is there to fear?” These efforts to understand nature, restore balance - when it can be done – and to understand each other better, lie at the heart of why this work

It’s heartening to watch as a group of people from extremely diverse backgrounds, lifestyles and opinions gather year after year to share this experience and come away with a singular feeling of fellowship.”

With so many shark enthusiasts from around the world taking part in these excursions, building awareness about how important their efforts are, and seeking out new and better ways to share the message, the next generation – including Lauren Stokes – is equally committed to turning the tide in favor of a healthier planet, more responsible use of the earth’s resources and greater awareness of consequences – both beneficial and destructive – tied to the actions of the one species that can choose to preserve all others and restore order where it has been disrupted.

A day doesn’t pass when I don’t meet another ‘plant parent’ around our beautiful town. I am not sure if I knew until the last year that my twelve plus year hobby or as my husband likes to call an obsession had an identity. Loosely defined, a plant parent is someone who looks after plants with as much care and devotion as they would a child or a pet. This trend has really taken off in recent years and it’s easy to see why. Houseplants offer us a connection to the outdoor world and let us experience the satisfaction of nurturing life.

When I adopted my first plant I was just looking to compliment my new home’s décor. I had torn a page out of Architectural Digest with a picture of a room that was designed with a beautiful plant. I found that plant from the magazine at the local florist in historic downtown Castle Rock and happily drove it home like a new born baby. My original reasons for plants in my home where to make my spaces look beautiful.

However, I quickly discovered that the plants were improving the air quality in my home. That’s when I started my deep dive into researching the other benefits of plants in the home.

It's easy to assume that 'healthy plants' refers to plants that are thriving, indoors and out. Actually, it's a term that covers plants that benefit our health.

While the health benefits of plant-based diets are well documented, new research uncovers the lesser-known uses of the nature around us.

I started asking the local owners of our area floral shops, garden centers, nurseries and garden club members every possible question I could think of. One thing about plant people is they are happy to share their knowledge and welcome every and all questions. It’s one of the happiest group of people to be around. They are natural born nurturers. So don’t be afraid when you are getting started to seek advice from experts and fellow plant enthusiasts.

Growing plants is a labor of love. As such, there’s bound to be some trial and error involved and some mistakes along the way. Be patient with yourself and remember that you’re getting better each day. Have fun on this adventure, you are not only filling your home with beauty, but you are actively improving your wellbeing and those you live with.

PLANTS THAT REDUCE ANXIETY Lavender is known for its stress-relieving qualities – it slows down the heart rate and lowers blood pressure to greatly reduce stress. This is why its scent can often be found in lotions and sprays. Snake Plant is also believed to reduce anxiety, improve respiratory problems and cure the symptoms of a headache

PLANTS THAT HELP YOU SLEEP Not getting enough sleep can have a huge impact on many aspects of life, from our health to our work abilities to our social lives. Whether you struggle to drift off or are easily disturbed in the night, keeping a potted Aloe Vera plant beside your bed could help you see the night through, as it produces oxygen at night to combat insomnia and improve overall sleep quality.

Jasmine flower is also believed to reduce anxiety levels which in turn will help you drift off to sleep, and the gentle scent will keep you in a deep sleep throughout the night.

Bamboo Palm is known for its ability to fight indoor air pollution, promoting clear-thinking and easy breathing. Another plant is Golden Pothos which removes air toxins and absorbs unpleasant smells – the perfect plant to keep by the fridge or in the kitchen.

PLANTS THAT CLEAR THE AIR Removing harmful toxins such as benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and xylene will keep both you and your home happy and healthy. Rubber Plant and Peace Lilies are both incredibly effective at purifying the air around you.

directions: Mix all spices and apply liberally to the tri-tip.

Allow to rest in the refrigerator for 24 hours before smoking over grapevines.

Aspen Brewing Company is the only licensed brewery in Aspen, population around 7,000. It might seem strange that a destination town like Aspen only has one brewery, but the town is notoriously choosy about its businesses.

“To do business in Aspen, you almost have to prove you can’t afford to,” says Don Bryant, Aspen Brewing Company’s CEO. Now a local trademark, Aspen Brewing worked to earn the town’s blessing for more than a year.

At first, Aspen’s community was skeptical of a potential big business takeover. But with the town’s alpine location complicating shipping and limiting water supply—breweries there are bound by the finite water supply the surrounding mountains offer—the brewery’s enthusiasm proved authentic.

“You have to do it because you love it,” Don says, which is exactly what Aspen Brewing did.

Duncan Clauss, a University of Colorado Boulder graduate and home brewer whose family had lived in Aspen for generations, started Aspen Brewing with his brother and sister in 2008, building a brand around Aspen’s mountain lifestyle, as well as a brewing location and public tasting room near the airport. Don bought Aspen Brewing in 2020 and Capitol Creek in 2021.

At the foot of the Elk Mountain Range, Aspen Brewing’s taproom at 121 S. Galena St. fits seamlessly into the town’s skiing, snowboarding, climbing and biking community and aims to become a landmark around all things Roaring Fork Valley.

GOLD LEVEL In January 2020, the International Mountain Bicycling Association awarded Roaring Fork Valley a Gold Level Ride Center for its varied terrain skill levels and hundreds of quality trail miles.

The association designated the valley Bronze Level in 2014, but land managers and community advocates have campaigned to bump up the rating for years to be included in one of the seven Gold Level mountain biking centers around the world.

To celebrate the success, Aspen Brewing’s newest beer, Gold Level (out this spring), is a collaboration with its sister company Capitol Creek Brewery

that lauds the area’s mountain biking community and will only be distributed to local establishments around Roaring Fork Valley.

Gold Level is brewed with Motueka and Rakau hops harvested from New Zealand, one of the other locations with a Gold Level designation. Colorado produces a similar amount of beer with these hops as New Zealand does, making the state somewhat of a Napa Valley of brewing.

Aspen Brewing and Capitol Creek bought the dry-hopped lager’s malt from local, fifth-generation farmers at Root Shoot Malting in Loveland.

Like the sister establishments, Root Shoot values the way these smaller craft breweries build mystique around limited releases for locals. When tourists can’t drink a certain beer outside Aspen Brewing’s taproom, it unites the community around what’s special in their town, both inside and outside the brewery.

Gold Level, for example, “is meant to celebrate the Elk Mountain Range and the Roaring Fork Valley, and to bring people together, not just in our tap rooms,” says Ryan Williams, director of marketing at Aspen Brewing.

The seasonally rotated and limitedly available 10th Mountain Imperial Stout, which brewers took out of bourbon barrels the day before my call with Aspen Brewing, is only available at the company’s taproom and Capitol Creek. The beer celebrates the 10th Mountain Division that manages backcountry huts in Aspen, among other area mountain towns, for skiers, snowshoers and hikers.

Aspen Brewing commercially produces and distributes only six types of canned beers a year at stores like Safeway, and around 30 styles a year for their taproom. The companies’ two head brewers lead production of 3,500 barrels brewed with Colorado mountain water a year, half of which are consumed at their two restaurants.

Aspen Brewing and Capitol Creek honor their staff and the art of brewing by holding events with almost 90 staff members to celebrate them, offering the option for every one of them to spend a day with one of the companies’ brewers and learn their craft.
