I moved to the Roaring Fork Valley a decade ago this spring, sight unseen, from the South. I can still distinctly remember the thrill of rolling through Glenwood Canyon late at night on the last stretch of the drive west, in a late season snow storm. Indubitably naive, I remarked to my husband at the helm of our U-Haul: “I can’t believe there’s this much snow in April.” In the years since that experience, I’ve learned about the practicalities of life—and weather—in Colorado, namely that it does indeed snow in April (and May, and June), that one would be foolish to pack away their wool socks any time before Father’s Day, and so on. But the most important lessons I’ve learned have not had much to do with precipitation, or even mountains; they’ve had to do with people, and finding home. I’ve had the pleasure of working as the editor of this magazine for the past five years, and will be moving on from the position after this issue. It’s been immeasurably rewarding to have had so many opportunities to bring our valley’s stories to the forefront in these pages; in fact, telling these stories helped me begin to sense that I might even have some roots to grow here. And that’s a great feeling. Every year, Roaring Fork dedicates its March issue to stories of Home, so I can’t think of a more fitting farewell. I will look forward to telling even more local stories through other avenues in the future. But for now, be well, neighbors—and please say hello if we meet around town! After Years of Gray Gray Gray, Designers Report that Color is Finally Making its Way Back into Home Interiors. Carbondale's Abbe Murray of Murray Design Company Shares What She Loved About Designing this Basalt Stunner—with Nary a Neutral in Sight

Warm, timeless, relatable: these are the words Abbe Murray would use to describe her work. As the owner of Carbondale’s newest interior design studio, Murray Design Company, she serves a varied clientele of second (or third) homeowners and full-time local residents who seek spaces in which they can actually live. “Most people come to me with an idea,” Murray reveals. “And I love the challenge of rounding out their vision. I wouldn’t say I have a specific ‘style’ at all, I’m more of a chameleon—I enjoy working with a variety of design styles—but I do want to make spaces livable. A home interior should feel like a special collection, not like walking into the lobby of a hotel.” Raised in a small town in southeast Iowa, Murray studied at Iowa State University (a nationally-ranked interior design school) and later took an internship in Las Vegas. Working in Vegas was a formative experience for the young designer, and she wanted to continue spreading her wings in the West. Murray began applying for positions around Colorado—where she knew she’d love the mountain lifestyle. She landed a job with an architecture firm in Aspen, relocated to the valley, and never looked back. Today, she is working for herself—and keeping quite busy. Murray recently opened a new office on Main Street in Carbondale, juggling the demands of small business ownership while working with her expanding list of clients. One of her favorite recent projects was designing a Basalt home with owners who wanted to embrace the latest trend in interiors: color. Lots of it. In her own words, Murray shared with Roaring Fork what she loved most about this home:
Vibrancy “This is such a happy home, a reflection of the lifestyle and personality of the vibrant family who lives here. The main living space is a central core of the overall footprint of the home, a full-gut remodel with architecture and interiors by 2757 design x build co., and building by Hayes Construction. The furniture and soft goods I curated to complement and showcase the owner-commissioned Flying over Aspen piece by London-based artist Hormazd Narielwalla. Even with the soaring ceilings and loads of natural light, there is still a coziness you immediately feel when you walk in this room.”

Custom Details “The kitchen and architectural slat walls were a collaboration between the design-minded owners and architects. They created a floor plan perfect for entertaining. The expandable dining table and chairs were selected as an intentional visual pause to let the architectural details shine. A custom Bocci chandelier becomes a showpiece; pulling together colors from all corners of the home. My first boss and mentor taught me that every room needs a stripe and a touch of green. Check, check.”
High Impact Color “Don’t forget about the guest room! This client understood that every room contributes to the overall warmth of the design and didn’t skimp on style for their guests. We color blocked with a saturated, jewel toned rug and mixed in small-but-mighty, high impact pieces like custom pillows and this playful bud vase. The bold components shine against the background of gallery-style walls, simple wood flooring, and serene textural bedding.”
Good Bones “When you can’t put your finger on what makes a good design, turn to the building blocks: layering texture and pattern, composition, negative space, and contrast. My parents were civil engineers, and my brother an architect. Whether these principles were ingrained from a young age or learned, they remain critical as my design aesthetic has evolved.”
Statement Pieces “If you’re still stuck on how to pull colors together, try starting with a statement piece you love, such as a colorful pillow or painting. Identify three or four colors to repeat throughout the room in various ways. Wallpaper, dried florals, books, lamps, drapes, and bedding are all interesting ways to bring more vibrancy to a neutral space. Look for inspiration all around you: in nature, art galleries, and magazines. If you love the result, you’ve done it right.”

March is one of my family’s favorite months of the year. Spring is in the air with longer days and warmer temps, and the list of things to do in the valley right now is endless. Like many people who now live here full-time, I arrived for one ski season and never left! I moved to the valley in 1986, and I am so thankful to have met my husband here. Together we have raised our two daughters and we are very passionate about life in the Roaring Fork Valley. As an adventure-loving family, this time of year we have often preferred a “staycation” for spring break because there are so many unique opportunities to continue enjoying the snow right here at home. We are a skiing family, and have rarely felt the tug to travel away from spring days on the mountain. When we think of perfect spring days, this is what we have in mind.
WEST BUTTERMILK A favorite activity that we have been doing for years is to load the car with ski and sledding gear and head to West Buttermilk in Aspen, where my husband grew up. We congregate with family and friends to play and picnic the day away, ending with hot chocolate and fondue. It’s a fun way to celebrate the end of the cold season.
INDEPENDENCE PASS We also like to spend time touring up Independence Pass. The road is closed
in March, but that lends itself to a peaceful experience without cars. When my girls were young we pulled them up the road in pulks, but now we cross country ski or use our AT (alpine touring) skinning gear. Carry a backpack with your lunch, lots of water, and hang out and soak in the views.
HIGHLAND BOWL For the more hearty, an all-time favorite is to hike and ski Highland Bowl. Hiking to the top of the bowl is a feat to be celebrated when we all reach the prayer flags and greet the majestic peaks. We soak in their energy and are then rewarded with a magnificent family run down some of the steepest ski trails in our valley.
HOME SWEET HOME As active as we are as a family, and with my daughters now in their 20s, we do have a great appreciation for down days that we fill with puzzles and games right at home. Sometimes these days might also include visits to local museums, hot springs, and a few favorite restaurants like Crêperie du Village in Aspen, Free Range Kitchen in Basalt, and Izakaya in Carbondale. A RELATIONSHIP BUSINESS With technology enabling social media, national search capabilities, and anything digital in the palm of your hands, you might think technology has replaced real estate agents. But nothing could be further from the truth, especially in this fast-paced environment where we have a diminished supply of available homes. While sites like Realtor.com and Zillow have hovered in the cloud and captured site traffic for every real estate search out there, you can get a sense for what your home might be worth. It’s easy and convenient. But what these sites can never replace is local expertise, recognition of the true value of a home, and the need for a proven professional to have a relationship with buyers and sellers. Nothing can replace local real estate insiders’ knowledge of what’s available and may not be listed online. A web listing alone doesn’t provide the experience of visiting a property in person, and what you see when you look left or right before you step through the door. Zillow can’t truly explain to a prospective buyer the quality of schools in the area, if you are surrounded by seasonal rentals, or which mortgage professionals can offer the best lending products. ROARING FORK: Is there a difference in fire insurance coverage for damage due to wildfire versus internal home fire? Derron Cloud: In most cases, fire is a covered peril whether due to wildfire or internal home fire. You should meet at least annually with your insurance agent. You can get the best out of meeting with your agent by asking about your current coverages and understanding any limitations and exclusions to the homeowners policy. You can be better prepared for a loss when you are aware of what is covered and what is not.

RF: What’s our general risk level for fire damage here in the valley? Cloud: As we have seen the last few years with the Grizzly Creek Fire, the Lake Christine Fire, and most recently the Marshall Fire, wildfires can occur anywhere at any time. Because of the risk of wildfires in Roaring Fork Valley, it’s imperative for the community to be as prepared as possible. They can start by talking to their insurance agent to ensure coverage is up-to-date and keeping an updated home inventory accessible. CONTINUED >

RF: What’s covered if a home is completely lost? Partially lost? Cloud: Originally, a standard homeowners policy covered only the risk of fire. Today’s homeowners policies provide protection against a number of the “perils” of modern life, in one “package” policy. A typical homeowners policy can provide insurance protection for the following: • Home: The physical dwelling structure and other structures attached to it. • Other structures: For example, a detached garage, pool house, guesthouse, green house, or tool shed. • Personal property: This covers the contents of the home such as furniture, appliances, or clothing. Certain types of property may have specific dollar limits. • Loss of use or additional living expense: If a home is damaged by a covered peril, loss-ofuse coverage helps meet the costs of hotel bills, apartment or rental home, eating out, and other living expenses while the home is being repaired. This policy section can also reimburse a homeowner for lost income if a room in the home were rented out. This is sometimes insured on an actual-loss-sustained basis. • Personal liability: Provides protection against legal liability for bodily injury or property damage if a third party is accidentally injured. • Medical payments: Also known as guest-medical payments, this section provides coverage if a third party is accidentally injured and needs medical treatment. RF: How can homeowners keep up with adequate insurance amidst increasing home values? Cloud: Meeting with your agent at least annually is the best way to make sure your coverage is up to date. Your insurance needs change over time. Conducting a home insurance review with your agent at least once each year can help you determine if your policies still make sense for your current situation.

RF: Could you offer five tips on simple things residents can do to protect their homes and belongings from fire danger? 1. Remove or reduce the potential fuel within a 30-foot safety zone around your home. (If you live in a high-risk area, increase the safety zone to 100 feet). 2. Remove highly flammable and low-branched trees, such as evergreens, eucalyptus and juniper. For remaining trees, remove limbs within 15 feet of the ground. 3. Move stacked wood and other flammable items outside the safety zone. 4. Maintain a home inventory and review it with your insurance agent yearly to ensure you are properly insured. 5. Help ensure your family’s safety by installing and maintaining smoke alarms and fire extinguishers in your home. Have a wildfire evacuation plan with your family!
