big hike. See those new friends. Take that little getaway. Give the kids one more sleepover, one more splash, and one more s’more. Teach them that the fleeting days of late summer are, perhaps, the sweetest of all. Everyone’s a bit bleary from months of blazing heat, but this is still no time to rest. So pack it all in, folks—because come September, the chill hits fast. A high country autumn waits for no one. Happy August adventuring, Roaring Fork Valley families. Relish that sun out there.

Red, White, and Blue in Redstone The annual Independence Day parade took place at high noon in Redstone on July 4th. Hundreds of spectators lined the town boulevard, enjoying the colorful old-fashioned procession under sunny skies. A pie sale, hot dog stand, ducky derby, U.S. Air Force flyover, and other festivities rounded out the day. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROARING FORK LIFESTYLE

Growing Young Learners THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN PRESCHOOL COALITION WORKS TO ADDRESS THE VALLEY’S CHILD CARE CRISIS AND SHORTAGE OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES
THE REALITY The Roaring Fork Valley is an incredible place to raise a family. But at what cost? “If we had both of our children in full-time care, we would be spending $2,400 a month on child care—more than our mortgage,” a dad of two in Glenwood Springs reveals. This experience is pretty typical. A recent report from the Northwest Colorado Council of Governments found that $27,055 is the annual cost of having an infant and four year old in full time care in the state of Colorado. This translates to 33 percent of the median income. But affording child care isn’t the only problem—many families simply can’t find it here, at all. “Shortly after I got pregnant, I started calling around to childcare centers. I quickly learned that I was late to the game; I would have had to get on a waitlist before I was pregnant, before I was married. Actually, before I knew I would be living in the Roaring Fork Valley,” says a working mom of one living downvalley. THE IMPORTANCE The shortage of child care and early learning opportunities—due to lack of capacity overall and the cost barriers— is a real challenge for working families and, in turn, the economy, as businesses need parents in the labor force. “Accessible and affordable childcare is a critical element to retaining employees with young families,” states Aspen Skiing Company, one of the larger employers in the valley. While early childhood care and education is critical in supporting today’s workforce, it is also key in ensuring the next generation of workers and leaders.

Kids, especially kids who may be picky or selective, often like a little bit of novelty.
MAKE SNACKS AND MEALTIME FUN We all know that kids like to play and have fun, so why not make food fun? Whether you’re turning broccoli into a microphone at dinner, or playing tic-tac-toe with edible carrot sticks, kids get into it. DON’T GIVE UP Parents often assume that if a child doesn’t eat a food the first or second time it’s served, the child doesn’t like the food. Many children may need to see or taste a food 10 or 20 times before they are willing to eat it. FORCING HEALTHY FOODS ON KIDS OFTEN BACKFIRES Often, making a child eat food or eat a certain amount of food backfires. It may backfire in the short run by making a child more selective and less likely to eat the foods you want them to eat. CONTINUED >
