This was the message relayed again and again as we spoke with several valley-based female professionals for our annual women’s issue this month. The belief that when we, as women, lift each other up, we all win—especially in the workplace. Since our community is rich with accomplished, driven, creative, and powerful

women, I was delighted that this not-so-secret ingredient of success bubbled to the top of conversation so often. Take it from cover stars Leslie Newbury and Roshni Slali, a local real estate team: “Having a good friend and colleague who is always there when you need advice, support, or an extra set of hands is the best. No one single agent can do everything well. We each bring very different skills to the table. There’s no doubt that we’re stronger together.” Although we’d never have enough pages to spotlight every female entrepreneur, doctor, educator, banker, broker, or business owner in the valley, we hope you’ll find the small cross-section of professionals featured in our May issue to be a shining example of achievement in a variety of fields.

LOCALS ONLY ARTICLE CAITLIN CAUSEY
MARIA LUCY MONCADA ARCILA COMMUNITY INCLUSION & ENGAGEMENT COORDINATOR ALPINE BANK WHAT HAS BEEN A MEMORABLE ENDEAVOR IN YOUR CAREER, AND WHY? Around 1984, I was working with a non-profit organization in Jamundi, Colombia as a promoter of female head-of-household entrepreneurs. The idea was to organize them and promote the creation of community-oriented businesses. That is the backstory of three small neighborhood-run factories which provided plastic bags, brooms and mops, and wax candles. I had to coordinate and schedule training classes in the areas of administration, financial literacy, and manufacturing. The nonprofit that I was representing would assume all costs of the training, machinery, and tools for those training and for the continuous operation for six months; then, those women would need to continue with those businesses by themselves. Also I do not want to leave aside my greatest satisfaction has been being part of the Alpine Bank team, and the reach we have been able to develop with the Denver community at large, as well as non-profit organizations in Denver, Aurora, and Boulder. We have given sponsorships through the Latino Community Loyalty Card, enabling our community to advance their programming and benefit initiatives. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR YOUNG FEMALE PROFESSIONALS FOLLOWING IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS? The best advice I can give to young female professionals is to maintain a high level of self-confidence. To believe in their professional capabilities and in the fulfillment of rich teamwork, without decaying into rivalry and unnecessary competition.

LEADING LADIES
L I N D S AY G O U L D BUSINESS MANAGER GOULD CONSTRUCTION/ROYAL MINI STORAGE, GLENWOOD SPRINGS WHAT MOTIVATES YOU PROFESSIONALLY, AND HOW DO YOU ACCOMPLISH YOUR CAREER-RELATED GOALS? What motivates me professionally is a desire to make a difference, achieve excellence, and further my knowledge. I strive to better my long time family business with new skills, innovative ideas, and strong commitment to family legacy. I am also motivated to do my best to become a role model and someone that my children can look up to. I work toward accomplishing my career-related goals by having a vision of long term goals and working within my value structure to make steady gains towards those goals. Also having a work/life balance and ensuring that everything I am involved in has purpose. The passion generated from working from purpose is generally unstoppable and I find myself trying to up the bar for my goals along the way. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG FEMALE PROFESSIONALS FOLLOWING IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS? Believe in yourself, strive to find your purpose, don’t listen to anyone tell you that you can’t. Compromise and sacrifice are often necessary in life, but never compromise or sacrifice who you are. CONTINUED >

DR. CA R R IE BESNET TE H AUSER PRESIDENT & CEO COLORADO MOUNTAIN COLLEGE
WHAT HAS BEEN AN UNEXPECTED JOY OF YOUR CHOSEN CAREER PATH? When I first moved to Colorado, I lived in Boulder and then Denver (combined for nearly 15 years), often visiting distant parts of the state to recreate and while serving on various boards or commissions. I thought these experiences gave me a “statewide” perspective. It was not until my husband and I moved to the Western Slope that I fully appreciated the “urban/rural” divide and why this dynamic exists. Living just outside of Glenwood Springs for the past eight years has been truly wonderful, and it has made me much more aware of the unique challenges facing rural and mountain resort communities. My unexpected joy has been learning how best to advocate for these communities and issues with first-hand knowledge and experiences. And, I’ll take seasonal construction Sarah R. Johnson

Surround yourself with a “kitchen cabinet” of experienced people you trust to give you advice, support and to lean on from time to time. If you have a public speaking engagement, practice on one or more of them. Ask them to comment on how you present yourself or project your voice. opportunity to consider something from a different perspective.
The greatest challenge was not being able to see that I was being held back from my potential, dreaming big and being able to fully blossom in my vocation as a professional educator. When I finally was courageous and brave enough to act, I chose to take a leap and close one door. Then, the world of opportunity and possibility opened immensely. I’m curious what would be different if I had recognized this earlier in my career and made the leap sooner. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER YOUNG FEMALE PROFESSIONALS FOLLOWING IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS? Develop strong relationships with mentors, colleagues, and those who can challenge you to live into your potential; always growing. Be generous with your time offering to have coffee chats with new connections, serving in leadership for one’s community, and taking on projects that sometimes just need to be done regardless of how much you get paid. Trust your intuition. Be bold, brave, and gentle with yourself and others.

Dr. Carrie Besnette Hauser
KAREN URNISE DENTIST AND DENTAL PRACTICE OWNER URNISE DENTISTRY, GLENWOOD SPRINGS WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED AS A BUSINESS OWNER? I have learned how important it is to have other professional women as mentors, to support you as you juggle being a business owner and a mom. It is all about creating a great group of people to help you succeed so you can be efficient and do what you love. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG FEMALE PROFESSIONALS FOLLOWING IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS? The best thing you can do is dream big — dream of where you want to be, how’ll you spend everyday. Make goals for how you will get there, and write it all down. It helps to have a mentor or friend keep you accountable to those goals, so find someone to share your dreams with. And finally, learn when to compromise, learn how to negotiate, when to pivot, and how to change your goals to fit who you become.

YOGA FOR THE KEY PHASES OF A WOMAN’S LIFE
STRIKE A POSE THE BENEFITS OF A REGULAR YOGA PRACTICE ARE INNUMERABLE. From easing anxiety, to balancing hormones, to building strength and flexibility. All areas of your body and life can be enhanced with the practice of yoga. The following sequences are specifically designed to help women during major life transitions. First let’s start with a few poses that are good for everyone, at any time: 1. Sukhasana. Sit comfortably on a blanket with legs crossed, neutral spine, and relaxed legs. Close your eyes and feel your breath. Place one hand on heart and one hand on belly. Slowly start to deepen and lengthen the breath. This reduces anxiety and stress, and improves mental clarity, lowers blood pressure, aids digestion, and tones the muscles of the back. 2. Tadasana. Stand tall, feet hip-distance apart, parallel. Micro bend in knees, neutral pelvis, open heart. Ears over shoulders. This helps posture and physical awareness. 3. Balasana. Sit on heels, fold forward, extend arms forward and relax head to ground or support. This relaxes the back muscles, relieves constipation, and calms the nervous system. 4. Cat/Cow. Come to hands and knees in a table top position; on inhale lower the stomach, pull shoulders back, heart forward, gaze up and sits bones up. On exhale round the spine, draw belly in, tail bone down and gently tuck chin

TEENS Yoga for teens can be so helpful in improving self-esteem and body image, enhancing creativity, and improving focus. 1. Chakki Chalanasana. Sit with legs extended forward and wide, extend the arms to shoulder height and interlace fingers. Circle torso over hips. Inhale as you lean back and exhale as you come forward. This tones the back muscles, abdomen muscles, arm muscles, and opens up the chest and the groin. It also tones uterine muscles and helps in preventing painful menstrual cycles.
2. Baddha Konasana. Sit with soles of feet together and knees wide, hinge forward in the hips. This stretches inner thighs and knees, while improving hip and groin flexibility. It helps in intestine and bowel movement, and eases fatigue from long hours of walking or traveling. Through this pose you can also find relief from menstrual cramps and discomfort. 3. Yoga Nidra. Also know as yogic sleep, yoga nidra is a type of guided meditation that can be therapeutic. It cultivates relaxed awareness of body, breath, and mind, encouraging all to surrender and to compassionately ‘be here now’ without judgement.

Sit comfortably, extend right arm up above head, bend elbow and reach in between shoulder blades with left hand and come up to hold right elbow, hooking the fingers of the right hand. This relieves neck and shoulder pain caused by holding and nursing baby.

3. Uttanasana. Stand comfortably with feet
hips-distance apart and fold forward at the hips. Allow the torso to dangle. Knees can bend as much as needed. This pose can help ease anxiety, irritability and insomnia.

This pose helps hot flashes, opens up the front of the body, and creates a sense of surrender. 2. Adho Muhka Svanasana. From a table top pose, tuck toes, press into hands and lift hips up and back. Hand should be shoulder distance or wider, feet hip distance or wider. Micro bend or greater in knees and the spine lengthens. This pose helps memory, supplying the brain with oxygen-fresh blood and lengthens the legs and spine. Adho Mukha Svanasana pose.

CULINARY CREATIONS (CONTINUED) source of income after Covid-19 hit last year. A leader in every sense of the word, McQueen yearned to protect her staff and keep spirits alive, while also reinventing the meaning of all that granola could be. “Covid-19 played a big role in inspiring me to share GrainFreeNola with the world,” she says, “but that inspiration quickly changed to a purpose. GrainFreeNola has allowed me to give back to my birth country, highlight beautiful African flavors, and empower women.” Overseeing the creation of each batch gives her the satisfaction and knowledge that from conception to execution, the granola carries its integrity into the mouths of consumers. “I believe in the synergy of handmade products. There is a chemistry between things that are touched and cared for,” McQueen says. It’s easy to feel that synergy when you’re around McQueen, a guest in her restaurants, or sampling one of her crunchy new snacks. Perhaps one of the most exceptional aspects of McQueen’s approach is her devotion to reinventing “health norms.” Food doesn’t need to be expensive, complicated, or hard to source in order to be healthy. There is great value and beauty in her deep focus on the simplicity of food groups, like the grains of her home country. “Next, I’m excited to start creating a nut-free snack using fonio and ancient grains. These are ingredients that I have personal connections to but also have a lot more added health benefits than other typical grains like quinoa,” she says. “For me, true happiness and satisfaction are simple: creating and sharing my passion with others, educating them, seeing them smile after eating my food. Being a chef there is little to no glory, but since I have opened my kitchen, I am able to actually see and hear my customers and personally take care of them. That’s the real reward.” Photo by Alan Battman

PHOTOGRAPHER AND ENTREPRENEUR SIRI RAITTOROCHOWIAK ON COVERING THE IDITAROD
LOCAL’S CHOICE
SLEDS, CAMER A, AC TI O N SIRI RAITTO-ROCHOWIAK KNOWS A THING OR TWO ABOUT ADVENTURE. An Alaska native raised in a family of dog mushers and skijorers, she also grew up with a camera in hand. After traveling south in 2011 to attend the photography and outdoor leadership programs at Colorado Mountain College, Raitto-Rochowiak settled in Glenwood Springs. Now an instructor in that same photography program, the entrepreneur is also hard at work expanding Siri Raitto Photography, her business as an outdoor lifestyle visual content creator in both Colorado and Alaska. She’s worked with big name brands like Weston and Full Sail Brewing, and last year was selected to be one of three official photographers for the famed Iditarod, Alaska’s premier long-distance sled dog race. “The race itself was amazing,” she recalls. “Flying out on bush planes from checkpoint to checkpoint, playing leapfrog with the other two photographers to capture all the happenings at all legs of the race, was incredible.”
