WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CREATED SOMETHING? Wait, that sounds a little intimidating. Let me rephrase: When was the last time you simply made something with your hands? Chances are, it was more recent than you might give yourself credit for. Maybe it was a scratch-made meal or fresh flowers arranged in a vase, or a handwritten note to a loved one. Perhaps it was just building playdough sculptures with your kids after work; that counts, too. The point is, opportunities to create are everywhere—we just have to seize them. MOUNTAIN WEST SANE ALLIANCE Glenwood-based River Bridge Regional Center recently announced that the Mountain West Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Alliance has found a permanent home under the River Bridge umbrella. In 2012 the Roaring Fork Valley lost its SANE Program, leaving the community vulnerable and local victims of sexual assault with inadequate services. A small group of professionals came together to reinstate the services that victims require, and formed the Mountain West SANE Alliance (MWSA). With dedication and tireless work, the group re-established services and in 2016, MWSA conducted its first SANE Examination. MWSA faced limited funding, mounting volunteer hours, and borrowed space; the longevity of the program soon was in question.To ensure that the community does not lose its adult SANE program again, River Bridge will provide the structure and leadership necessary for the permanency of the program.

NEW DIGS: “I’ve been dreaming up Batch since we opened up our original place,” smiles owner Aly Sanguily, marketing director and former tasting room manager for husband Chase Engel’s Roaring Fork Beer Company (RFBC). Batch is the summation of her dreams to date. SPEAKEASY AMBITIONS: “This isn’t a bar. We’re not serving shots. We’re more of a ‘living room-meets-library’ taproom vibe, more intimate, more about our brewery—a nice ‘come in with your computer’ kind of thing, and have a fun drink on tap,” Sanguily adds. ABOUT THOSE TAPS: In addition to RFBC beers, 12 more taps spill craft beers from Casey Brewing and Idylwilde, as well as yerba mate and a variety of kombuchas by Elevated Elixirs and Dragonfly. Batch has also tapped other Main Street offerings, from Bonfire nitro coffee to food deliveries from Phat Thai and Allegria. ON MENTORS, SKA BREWING: “They created an incredible sense of community; Durango is ‘Ska World’ over there, and they welcomed us,” Sanguily recalls. “I base my core values around them—we do a lot of philanthropy, support a lot of nonprofits.” SUPPORTING OTHER LOCALS: Batch is not only a favorite new locals’ hangout, it’s also helping the wider community. “We recently hosted space for the ‘How We Grow’ documentary Kickstarter campaign... there was an intent for being in here, a purpose to support. Those are the nights that make us feel really good. I always say we make and sell good beer, but I don’t think our brand would be the same without these kinds of things we do.”

From-Scratch Pasta Yield: 1 pound WHAT YOU NEED

2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 4 large eggs WHAT YOU DO

1. Mound the flour in the center of a work surface with a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and beat with a fork until smooth, then work flour into eggs with the fork. Use a bench scraper to work in the rest of the flour a little at a time. When the flour is incorporated, form the dough with your hands into a rounded mass for kneading. Lightly dust your workspace with flour and knead dough about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough with a bowl or plastic wrap and rest 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight. 2. To roll by hand, flour a clean work surface. Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent. 3. To cut by hand, lightly fold sheets one at a time into thirds and cut to desired thickness. Recipe from MarthaStewart.com.

Dark Chocolate Truffles WHAT YOU NEED

1/2 cup heavy cream 8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 cup cocoa powder, for dusting WHAT YOU DO

1. Bring the cream to just a simmer in a saucepan over low heat. Pour the cream over the chocolate in a bowl and let stand about 10 minutes to melt the chocolate. Add the vanilla, stir until smooth and set aside to cool for 1 hour at room temperature. 2. Beat chocolate at medium speed until thick and light-colored. Spread over the bottom of a baking dish, smooth and refrigerate 2 hours until firm. 3. Pour cocoa powder onto a deep plate or shallow bowl, and using a melon baller or small ice cream scoop, scoop out balls of chocolate. Roll in cocoa powder until coated and transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Recipe from FoodNetwork.com.
