The Bones of Christmas Past

T

hese days, stores seem to break out the Christmas decor as soon as the Halloween candies can be cleared away.

That may be a good thing for sales, but the long holiday season is hard on those away from family, those who have lost loved ones, those have lost the chance to be with loved ones because they must work. Count me among those who refuse to shop at stores that stay open on holidays, days that used to be sacrosanct and reserved for family, rest and worship.

My mother, a nurse, often chose to work on Christmas, joining Jewish colleagues in the emergency room so that co-workers could spend time with their families. It was a decidedly Christian thing to do, even though Dasher, Dancer, Vixen and Comet couldn't have dragged my non-believing mom into a church.

Mom's schedule often caused our family Christmas celebration to slip-slide around December. Often we'd take off on a ski vacation. The winter I turned eight, we were skiing at Winter Park when I fell, sustaining a spiral fracture. I screamed in agony the entire 48 miles from Winter Park to Kremmling's tiny Memorial Hospital. When Dr. Earnest Ceriani and his nurse pulled on my leg, straightening it so that the bone would heal soundly, it felt like hellfire beneath the skin.

But that wasn't the worst of it. My family had exchanged gifts on December 13, so they planned to ski on the 25th. I would have to spend a miserable, boring Christmas day alone in the clinic! In lonely, windswept Kremmling, a town mostly famous for having the coldest temperatures in the Lower 48!

It turned out to be wonderful.

Dr. Ceriani's Irish nurse came to my room and danced a jig for me. She also brought me a papier-mâché Christmas tree embellished with beads. It had been fashioned over a mayonnaise jar, and when its lid was unscrewed, a treasure-trove of candies tumbled out.

I can picture all that so clearly.

Three decades later, while walking around downtown San Francisco on my straight, strong leg, I happened into an exhibit documenting a historic piece of photojournalism from Life Magazine. Called "The Country Doctor," W. Eugene Smith's photo essay followed Dr. Ceriani making his rounds in 1942. The images showed exactly the same scene I encountered 17 years later: A lonely country doctor. A tiny clinic. A barren mountain town.

But the rest of what I remembered didn't show on Life's prints. It was etched into my bones: A mayonnaise jar. A jig. A stranger whose kindness touched me to the marrow.

Publisher’s Letter

A Month to Celebrate

D

ecember brings us a whole host of things to celebrate. My top three? Five wonderful grandkids, drinking hot chocolate and giving gifts.

They all bring a smile to my lips, and December brings with it opportunities to indulge in all three.

I suppose I could wait until December 16, Chocolate Covered Anything Day, to fill my cocoa with plenty of marshmallows. But December’s full of good excuses! Everyone knows about Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year's Eve, even Kwanzaa and Festivus. But you probably didn’t know that December 9th is the Official Lost and Found Day. Or that December 19th is Ugly Sweater Day. (Really. It’s on the Internet so it must be true!)

To that list, I can add one more. This magazine’s second birthday happens this month.

What really makes all these specially-named days worth celebrating is that they bring people together, just as Roaring Fork Lifestyle does.

The staff at Roaring Fork Lifestyle works tirelessly throughout the year to bring us stories of people, organization and businesses we all recognize.

It also introduces us to new people or businesses that are worth knowing.

Some of our stories are hot chocolate, sweet little pick-me-ups meant to make you smile. Some are educational. Some are meant to be a little

provocative, a bit like grandkids. Taken all together, our staff puts each issue together as a gift to the valley. Publishing it gives me the same warm feeling I get from giving gifts to family and friends.

Putting a monthly magazine together is a bit like organizing a big, family holiday event. Both require a massive planning effort, plenty of cooks in the kitchen and someone to pay the bills. Our valued advertisers who pay the bills make it all possible. So, as you head out to do your holiday shopping, I ask you to reward them with your patronage and mention that you read about them here.

Here at Roaring Fork Lifestyle, we look at our readers, business partners and talented staff members as a large family that gathers for a monthly community networking effort. It’s a lot of work, and sometimes, something happens that’s worthy of Bicarbonate of Soda Day (December 30). But in the end, it’s always memorable and worthwhile.

Arts and crafts have been around since the mid-19th century, starting in Britain. The Arts & Crafts Movement was an attempt to reform design and decorations by moving away from machinery and factory production. Artistry is also a form of self-expression and personal creativity.

Take a look at the online marketplace Etsy.com, with more than a million independent creative entrepreneurs who sell their uniquely created goods; you will see the long-lasting impact of that long-ago movement.

Being creative or having creativity is inherent in all of us. For some, being creative means singing or painting. It can also be crunching numbers in a way that creates opportunity, making a meal for your family, or mixing music. Being creative is doing the things we love with passion, so there are unlimited ways to be creative and express ourselves in today’s world.

Our local communities are full of people living with passion, and they showcase their arts and crafts throughout local markets, galleries, stores and online.

littering lights, boughs of evergreen, snowy mountainsides, gatherings, goodwill and smiles on the faces of every child in town: it’s Christmastime in Glenwood Springs.

But what year is it? 2016? 1916? Even earlier? With just the list above for reference, time is difficult to discern; while much has indeed changed in our valley home over the decades, some things never do—epecially our love of Christmas. Although there are quite a few more vehicles on Grand Avenue nowadays, and new iPhones have replaced ice skates and china dolls under the tree, you can still find all of the above in town today just as you could more than a century ago.

For locals who celebrate the season, Christmas here is simply beyond compare—and it has been that way since pioneer days.

Let’s rewind the clock and picture the scene: it’s December 1887, only two years after Glenwood Springs has been officially incorporated, and many residents are busy gathering for the young settlement’s first Christmas program. The teachers and children of the town have prepared a presentation to be given at the brand new two-story schoolhouse on Blake Avenue, which even has electric lights and steam heating! The school has been decorated to welcome members of the community, and students plan on giving several showings of their entertainment to accommodate many small groups of visitors.

In a town known for its tough population of miners, gamblers, wanderers and rugged entrepreneurs, the new school represents a true brick-and-mortar settling of Glenwood Springs—a sign that the old rough and tumble camp formerly known as Defiance is softening into a real town with young people, education and, yes, even family-oriented holiday celebrations.

As time rambles on into the 20th century, the children of Glenwood remain at the heart of its Christmas spirit. In the early 1900s, holiday programs are held annually at all the area churches, including St. Stephens Catholic Church, the First Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church.

The religious organizations’ youth often help decorate trees and make wreaths and evergreen arches to adorn the church interiors, which open their doors to welcome townspeople for an assortment of gatherings and services.

December snow falling across the region is a delight to the young and young-at-heart, especially as it enables polished sleighs to carry residents to and fro in the fresh powder, their sleigh bells jingling merrily with each turn. They glide through downtown, where shops are stocked with candy, gifts and other special Christmas items. Many people also choose to order presents via mail, and local United States Postal Service workers are busy delivering packages—some even hauling loads on small sleds through the streets.

The holiday delivery story of one such dedicated postman, rural mail carrier George Gibbons Hayes, quickly becomes the stuff of local legend. It’s Christmas Eve 1914, and he has been tasked with delivering the mail to Sunlight Coal Camp some 12 miles to the south. Just a dusting of snow has fallen in Glenwood, so he begins the route on his motorcycle— only to find it useless as the drifts deepen higher in elevation.

At this point, Hayes, who reported that he had experienced disappointing Christmases as a child, takes it upon himself to not let the youngest residents of Sunlight down.

OLD-TIME ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHRISTMAS (CON TI N U ED)

He gathers all the mail and packages on his back and trudges the remaining miles to camp in waist-deep snow, arriving half-frozen and exhausted at nearly 1 a.m. early Christmas morning, not unlike a real-life Saint Nicholas. Upon his arrival, he is greeted with boiling hot coffee. He then rests, knowing that the coal miners’ children will be able to open their Christmas surprises in the morning, thanks to his good deed.

The following year, the happy hearts of local children again remain top priority among residents as the first municipal Christmas tree is placed at 8th Street and Grand Avenue for all to enjoy. As the Glenwood Post reports on December 11, 1915, “Glenwood will have a community Christmas tree this year, and all the kiddies of the neighborhood will be made glad.”

A group of local women has set about to gather funds to provide all who attend a special Christmas Day celebration around the tree with a small treat, and generous donors and businesses are listed in the newspaper. The paper continues its holiday coverage later that week, stating that “the committee having the affair in charge, and the ladies have asked the Post to say that every child in Glenwood is to be remembered.” Some 600 little ones are expected to attend, including many who will travel with their families from neighboring towns.

Indeed, the children of Glenwood Springs have a fine community Christmas that year. At 4 p.m. on December 25, locals gather around the large decorated spruce on Grand Avenue under colored electric lights strung across the intersection, and wait for the program to begin.

Moore’s Orchestra plays from the balcony of the Hotel Glenwood as a group of the children, led by their teachers, march to the tree and sing “Silent Night.” The Ladies Quartette performs, and the High School Girls’ and Boys’ Glee Club makes an appearance before the entire crowd joins in for “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing.” At this point, all of the children are eager to see Santa Claus (impersonated by a Mr. W. H. Peabody), who rides in to greet them all.

The Post later reports, “our people watched the expectant faces of the children as they waited for the appearance of the good old saint of Christmastime... they saw those same faces wreathed in smiles and heard the joyous cheers of the kiddies as he approached in his auto sleigh from the direction of the North Pole.” The tree celebration quickly becomes an annual tradition and is held for many years following.

It is not until 1933 that a permanent Christmas tree is planted in Glenwood, a six-foot Colorado Blue Spruce plucked from White River National Forest and placed at the corner of 11th Street and Grand Avenue. The tree honors the memory of one of the most beloved figures of Glenwood’s old pioneer days: Mrs. Louisa Schwarz, who for decades brought special cheer to local children during the holidays. According to the Glenwood Post, “On Christmas Day, she annually held open house for the children of Glenwood, and there was not a youngster in town who did not receive a warm welcome and a sack of her famous cookies and candies.” Starting in 1950, the Schwarz tree has been decorated with lights, a lovely sight which the town maintains through the present day.

Year after year passes while new traditions, and those of days long gone, are mixed and merged. Now, in 2016, as locals settle in for another beautiful high-country holiday, we find ourselves a part of the living history of Christmastime in Glenwood Springs. We gaze at Mrs. Schwarz’s tree, we give to neighbors less fortunate, we delight in the happiness of children, we sing, and most of all—we celebrate. And that is a gift for all the ages.

Celebrating Artistic Community at Crystal Glass

Historic Studio Marks 44th Anniversary with Holiday-Themed Show

G

esturing at glass sculptures, artistic gifts and holiday ornaments, Shannon Muse ref lects, “I love a collaboration. I like the momentum, the camaraderie, the creativity. When it’s more than just me or an individual project, we’re more than the sum of our parts.”

“I like the energy, the sense of collaboration rather than competition. We’re all here because we love the beauty inherent in the materials,” adds fellow artist Pat Winger.

Winger and Muse are two of the 13 artists whose work is being showcased at the Crystal Glass Studio, which is celebrating its 44th anniversary over the holidays. Its gallery opened last July.

Crystal Glass was founded by Mary (Fasanaro) Matchael, a selftaught artist who moved to Carbondale in 1972. Mary first opened a studio in the historical Dinkle Building after convincing the landlord to rent the building's empty upper level to artists and nonprofits like radio station KDNK and Carbondale Arts. Then, in 1993, Mary and her husband John Matchael built the nearby 4,000 square-foot adobe building that now houses Mary’s office, gallery, studios and classroom.

Mary Fasanaro was a legal secretary in San Francisco when she first became interested in stained glass. When she inquired about learning glass art at local galleries, she was rebuffed. Local artisans were secretive and aloof. But armed with a library card and a fiery determination to learn, she taught herself. Four decades later, Mary and John Matchael receive commissions from famous clients worldwide, creating mostly functional pieces: doors, tables, lighting and windows. They are also the creators of the popular stained glass windows at the Church at Redstone.

Thrilled to make her living as a glass artist, Mary has poured her heart into building Crystal Glass into a thriving business and then into teaching. "It's exciting to connect with emerging artists as Crystal Glass becomes more of a teaching art center dedicated to keeping the craft alive," she says.

Although a generation younger than Mary, Robert Burch has a reputation and resume to rival Matchael’s. After graduating from high school, he went to work for Japanese artist Tadashi Torii and then artist Martin Blank. He also worked with Dale Chihuly's glass team.

Burch, who recently “moved back home” to the Roaring Fork Valley, appreciates both the gallery and the artistic company. He exhibits at both Crystal Glass and at S.A.W., where he has a studio.

“Everyone has their own unique style, and no one is repeating someone else’s work,” he comments. “In bigger cities, there’s a sense of animosity. There’s more camaraderie here.”

In addition to Burch, Matchael and Winger, the gallery’s contributors include glass artists Rick and Kathy Steckel, Dylan Balderson and Jacqueline Spiro-Balderson of Spiro Lyon Glass, woodworker Wesley J. Beuter, blacksmith Stephen Lock, and furniture maker Bob Johnson.

Johnson says he’s spent more than 30 years working solo. He prefers word-of-mouth marketing to galleries because “you pay half of what you get to the gallery, just so people get to see it! And most galleries tend to be expensive and hard to deal with.” But this one “is local, and about community.”

Pat Winger is a guitarist with world music group Valle Musico, as well as a woodworking artisan. To break down competitive barriers, he invited other music school students to share their homework.

“There was no way in the world we were going to be ‘the best’. There are so many musicians! We could only aspire to a certain level, and we could get there by collaborating, by helping others… Here, we're past all that. We see the beauty of being in it together.”

Muse chimes in, “I have been team designing for a couple of years now. If I’m working alone, I’m really critical of myself. But I will NOT let anyone beat up on my team.”

What? Could it be that Muse, creator of the Carbondale Library’s celebrated glass mosaic pillars, suffers lacerations from an inner critic? Oh, yes! Muse explains that despite more than 30 years’ experience, she has no related degree. A nasty voice inside her head—one that artists will recognize—often tells her that she’s “not qualified”.

LEARNING TO FUSE GLASS " These projects are laid out for you so you can't fail." Laughter greets this assertion from Shannon Muse.

For the past 45 minutes, the half-dozen students in the glassroom have been learning about the myriad variables involved in firing glass, about the physics of this remarkable material. It turns out that, because of the viscosity of glass, both a 1" thick slab and a 1/8" inch piece will turn out to be about 1/4" thick when fired. While eggs cool faster at altitude, glass fires faster here than at sea level.

But Muse has assembled all the tools and materials, and she teaches the techniques needed to reliably craft a wide array of holiday ornaments.

Students sift powdered glass through stencils, score and trim glass bars, and decorate with thin glass ribbons and glittering beads of dichroic glass. Muse tours the room, offering help and encouragement.

At the end of three hours, it all goes into the kiln.

Then, like kids listening for reindeer, the students must wait. Their no-fail projects will need to cool after firing. Their holiday surprises won't be revealed until several days have passed.

Collaboration turns out to be an antidote for that poison. "It knocks back the inner critic.”

Muse says that that the library's “Pillars of Light”—the work of more than 20 hands—were what really opened her eyes to the power of artistic teamwork. Since then, she’s been working with interns, learning by teaching.

John and Mary Matchael and Muse all share their passion by teaching. In a spacious “glassroom” behind the gallery, these creative collaborators offer exactly what Mary Matchael was so huffily refused in those San Francisco galleries: encouragement, a guiding hand and introductory classes that range from glass fusing, etched glass and sandblasting, to glass mosaics, and stained and leaded glass.

The glassroom is equipped with broad tables, patterns, forms and glassworking tools. Rows of rainbowed jars hold the fine-ground glass called "frit" that is used for coloring fused glassworks. The facility is exactly what any newcomer wanting to learn studio glass technique would want—if they had 30 years hindsight and plenty of funds to spend on tools and supplies!

Muse, who's interested in human nature as well as glass, teaches a three-day “spirit of glass” series here. Students create a mandala using “fusing and sand-blasting techniques, poetry and imagination.”

Creator of many church windows, Muse seeks to capture a sense of spirit, a moment of emotion, and wonder in her work. “Glass has metaphorical qualities. It can be a mirror, your reflection. It’s stone, yet it’s ephemeral. Its color and light changes through the day. It’s a paradox: fragile and fleeting but strong. It's so breakable, but some pieces still survive from Egyptian times. To stand in a cathedral with the color of ancient stained glass windows washing over you, that’s just color therapy!”

REVOLUTIONS SKATING CLUB INSPIRES AND TRAINS LOCAL YOUTH

“S

eeing these skaters is inspiring!” says 14 year-old Sage Williams.

There's nothing more thrilling than watching one of the world’s best athletes perform.

This holiday season brings such an opportunity with the Aspen Ice Spectacular on December 17th, a show that draws world-class figure skaters from around the world. This year’s headliners include Olympian and former Basalt resident Jeremy Abbott along with 2016 World Silver Medalist Ashley Wagner.

The Revolutions Skating Club, based in Aspen, sponsors the show both to entertain and inspire. More than 50 local Revolutions Club skaters will join Olympians and pros to demonstrate their talent through solo performances and in ensemble pieces.

The nonprofit Revolutions Skating Club enables young skaters to train year-round at the Aspen Recreation Center and the Aspen Ice Garden. Revolutions is officially recognized by the U.S. Figure Skating Association. Its four coaches, members of both U.S. Figure Skating and the Professional Skaters Association, are Peggy Behr, Grace Hancock, Michelle Hocknell and Taline Isberian.

Producing an ice skating show was the dream of coach Peggy Behr, who performed for years with Disney on Ice, and who was joined by her former skating student, Olympian Jeremy Abbott. The show was a long time in the making. “When I arrived in Aspen in 1993, I wanted to produce a show with John Denver performing live. Before I could make it a reality, he tragically passed. I then spent time raising my children,” said Behr.

About five years ago, discussions with Jeremy Abbott revived Behr's dream.

In 2013, Behr and Abbott made the dream a reality by producing the first show, then called Stars on Aspen Ice. Abbott had launched his figure skating career here in the Roaring Fork Valley; his family hails from Basalt and Aspen. Behr coached Abbott from 1993 to 2002. She then choreographed Abbott's programs through 2006.

Abbott became a four-time U.S. National Champion (2009, 2010, 2012, and 2014). He recently represented the U.S. at the 2010 Winter Olympics, where he placed ninth.

Then, in the 2014 Olympics, he won a bronze medal in the team event.

Behr recalls, “In Aspen in 1993, the City funded a Wintersköl skating show that brought in skaters, including Dorothy Hamill and Robin Cousins, which is why Jeremy started skating. With all the budget cuts, the show stopped. But I wanted to bring back that level of skating to inspire the young skaters and for the entire community to enjoy.”

Each year since 2012, Abbott has been instrumental in bringing fellow elite competitors and skating friends to his hometown to celebrate the holidays and to perform. Abbott’s father passed away two years ago from Parkinson’s disease, and Abbott has chosen this show as a way to help fight for a cure. Proceeds from the show and its silent auction support the Michael J. Fox Parkinson’s Foundation.

She is joined by two-time Japanese Champion, Olympian and World Champion Yuka Sato; Olympic Silver Medalist and World Champion Rosalynn Sumners; Freestyle medalist Kelly Smith, and U.S. Pairs champions Ashley Cain and Timothy Leduc.

Of the young Revolutions Club skaters performing in the show, many hail from the mid-valley. Coaches Michelle Hocknell and Taline Isberian live in Basalt. Young ‘Bonedalians Sage Williams, Lane Erickson will perform. They will be joined by Calla Diemer, Chloe Axelman, and Casey and Maddie Hocknell, who are from Basalt.

Revolutions coach Behr says, “I know that it is an amazing experience for the Revolutions skaters to skate alongside these amazing superstar skaters.”

“It's so great for our skaters to realize that they too can accomplish great things with their skating! I think they also realize… how hard these [star] skaters work at their sport. They are great role models for our younger skaters, both as people and as skaters.

Revolutions skater Sage Williams agrees. “Attending the show and meeting the skaters afterward for autographs has motivated me in my own skating.”

he small white aircraft spins its four propellers, rises straight up, then hovers about 12 feet off the ground, watching the three spectators as we wave to its camera. Then it flies off, deftly piloted by photographer Lewis Cooper. We see its bird’s eye view of tree tops and cliffs through Cooper’s smartphone.

Cooper uses his Phantom 4 drone to take some jaw-dropping local shots. “You really used to have to be a good pilot to fly these,” he says.

“The first ones out crashed with regularity. You had to practice and practice because you had to be a pilot just to take any photos.”

“They finally got it together with the Phantom 3,” he continues. “This Phantom 4 is really stable. It can fly for about half an hour and take video or stills. You can program it to follow a flight path and tell it to come home again.”

This drone’s predecessor had been programmed to fly up to Three Sisters Falls, 1,300 feet up and about 3,000 feet away from its takeoff. “It was supposed to come home, but it lost its signal. “So this is your second drone?”

Renee Ramge, Lewis’ life partner, chuckles. “Nope, not even close. This is probably about number five.”

“I crashed quite a few learning to fly them,” Lewis grins ruefully. “I would be calculating the cost in my head as they went down.” Crashes usually destroyed the $500 gimbal that keeps the drone’s camera horizontal. “I would make repairs, but they would never fly right after a crash,” he says. “Then I kept selling them to get the newer model…”

Cooper, a software engineer, took up photography in his teens.

“I took lots of bad camera shots with bad 110 cameras,” he scoffs.

He couldn’t afford a good camera until his dad—who ran a small museum—made him an offer. Dad would front half the cost of a $800 Nikon D50 camera if Lewis would document all the antiques in the Myton Memories Museum.

Cooper became interested in buying a drone after seeing a magazine ad. He showed it to Renee, also a talented photographer. “I mentioned it once, then dropped the subject.” Good quality drones sell anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000.

At Christmas, when Lewis opened his gift from Renee, he was expecting a cheaper RadioShack drone that Renee had located. But no! The package contained the real McCoy, his first Phantom.

“What I love about drone photography is that you can see what you could never see from the ground,” Cooper enthuses. “Drones have become so stable now, it’s like having a really high tripod.”

Among his favorite drone shots: an image taken from high above Hayes Creek Falls, rock art laid out on the banks of the Crystal River, and the iconic Crystal Mill above Marble—all seen from an angle previously reserved for eagles.

By programming a regular flight path, Cooper has been able to document the building of the True Nature Healing Arts reflexology path and of a kiva that is now being built near it. Several Aspen realtors have also commissioned him to make aerial videos of properties they have for sale.

Cooper is scrupulous about obeying FAA rules and respecting the privacy of people on the ground, for whom drones can seem like the creepy “eye in sky” described in the Alan Parson’s Project 1982 song. As Cooper says, “Drones are really going to mess up this world if we don’t handle them properly. I made a guy in Carbondale mad by flying over his house while filming the Kiva project.” After being confronted by the disgruntled homeowner, Cooper spent half an hour apologizing and explaining his “deep respect” for privacy.

“Now my number one goal is not to disturb anyone. When I filmed at the Crystal Mill, I waited until absolutely everyone was gone.”

Cooper, who lived for years in a 560-square-foot, off-the-grid cabin north of Vernal, Utah, has a love of wild country. “You can fly off a cliff or hover over a waterfall. The drone can see places you can’t get to at all. How exciting it is to think that you’re probably looking at something nobody but birds and bats have seen before.”

Buy groceries for the local food bank or for a friend.

One Christmas I did this and made an amazing discovery. As I walked the aisles and chose items for my friend—according to her tastes, not mine—I experienced the purest joy that I felt that entire Christmas.

Visit a local greenhouse where festive plants are on display. Don't be in a rush. Just calmly stroll along and pause to take in all of the sights and aromas.

Sit in the back row of a church or beside a local skating rink and just watch. Listen to the peaceful silence and whispers, or to the happy music, singing, and playful chil-

FINDING THE TRUE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS

y family used to put up outside Christmas lights during the last weekend of November.

Shortly after, we gradually transformed the inside of our house with decorations. Then we purchased a real pine tree, decorating it shortly before Christmas, at times as late as Christmas Eve. Nowadays, the stores put out decorations and begin to play Christmas music in late October, prior to Halloween—definitely a marketing construction designed to extend the shopping spree that Christmas has become. I find myself overwhelmed with the long holiday. Often, the times reserved for family celebrations involve last-minute shopping, cooking, cleaning, gift wrapping and traveling—a blur of hurried stress.

More and more, the few moments of complete peace and contentment I find usually fall outside of family gatherings and official Christmas events. Sometimes, it happens while I am driving around looking at lights and listening to Christmas music. It may come during an impromptu visit to a friend, or when someone unexpectedly drops by. Often, it happens in the middle of a concert or a Christmas pageant at my local church.

It almost always happens spontaneously.

But what if that moment doesn't arrive on its own? Here are a few suggestions that have helped me to rekindle true Christmas feeling:

If you have children, bake some favorite Christmas snacks or make homemade decorations or greeting cards.

If there is a nice snowfall, don't just shovel it away. Walk in it. Make tracks. The hush that a snowfall brings is amazing. If you have small children, pull them along on a sled. Go tobogganing, help the kids make a snowman or a snow fort. Have a friendly snowball fight.

Read some Christmas literature, such as a story by Charles Dickens. If you have a fireplace, enhance the experience by curling up near the fire.

Turn out the lights and listen to Christmas music.

Peruse your family photos, videos and movies from Christmases past.

Hopefully, by taking a tranquility break in the midst of the holiday rush, you will you be able to bring back the true feeling of Christmas.
