A Stone of Love The name “ruby” comes from the Latin word ruber, which means “red.” The glowing red of the ruby suggests an everlasting flame in the stone with the ability to shine through clothing and boil water. The ruby is considered one the oldest gemstones, dating back to as early as 200 B.C. The Chinese noblemen adorned their armor with rubies to protect them. Rubies were also buried beneath foundation to bring good fortune. The Greeks believed the fiery warmth of rubies could melt wax. The Ancient Hindus believed by offering rubies to their god, Krishna, they would be reborn as emperors. Burma, now called Myanmar, an Asian region, has been considered the capital for mining rubies since 600 A.D. The warriors of its time believed by implanting rubies into their skin, the fiery red gem would protect them in battle. The Burmese “blood red” ruby is the most expensive gem per carat in the world. Supposedly, the mines in Burma were depleted, and mining in the Mong Hsu region of Myanmar began producing rubies in the 1990s. Not like the Burmese ruby, these rubies are treated with heat to improve their rich red hue creating the saturation and transparency of the gem. The most desirable ruby is from Burma, not treated, scarce and extremely valuable. I chose the ruby for the cover this month to celebrate July—those born in July, it's your birthstone. Also, it’s one of my favorite gems. It symbolizes passion, protection, prosperity and was considered for centuries the perfect wedding gem. Many Europeans wore rubies to guarantee good health, wealth, wisdom and success in love. I think we all want good health, wealth, wisdom in our years and, most importantly, success in love. Historically, the ruby has been written by many to symbolize love. RUBIES

A
t a time when many people in the sport of golf are pessimistic about the future of the game, especially because of falling num-
bers of the next generation of players, the fortunes of Roanoke Country Club are heading in the opposite direction. And, for a club that can trace its history back as far as 1899, that’s an impressive story. The reasons are many and varied, but the headlines about RCC are that it has embraced both its past, that features one of the greatest figures in the world of golf course design, A. W. Tillinghast, and also its future that will revolve around adapting to modern-day family needs and encouraging more of those young players of tomorrow. Among those leading the way at RCC is general manager Jim Paschal who understands the nature of the golf club. “We’re a destination golf club which is different from all the other private clubs in the area. They are neighborhood clubs with homes within the golf course itself,” he says. “We have acknowledged that we are a 15-minute drive for most of our members these days and so we respect that and have become more family oriented.” So, while many modern courses benefit from families of golfers living along the fairways able to take their golf cart to the first tee, the RCC member has to jump in a car and drive to the club. Paschal knows even driving a short distance across town shows a different kind of commitment. The club has made recent investments on a splash pool and water jet, as well as a soccer field and a pickleball court while still maintaining improvements to normal golf club areas, especially the course and the clubhouse. “Of course, we’ll always improve our core assets for the golf members. For instance, our next projects are the sand traps and the cart paths,” Paschal says. "But we appreciate that lifestyles have changed and having young members playing lacrosse here as well as golf is fine.” The current strategies for membership have had a significant effect on recruitment over the last two years—the average age of the membership has dropped dramatically. In 2015, the average was 63.5 years of age and now it’s 55, while that number is set to fall to as low as 53 in the near future. “We have a membership total approaching 500 now and that’s our optimum number,” says Paschal, who will retire from his RCC job later this year. “That number gives the place a sense of exclusivity, but at the same time, it’s not so many that members are treading on each other’s toes.” The future of RCC looks secure as well with the Steve Prater Golf Academy taking care to introduce and nurture more young players, plus the nationally renowned First Tee organization also works at the club to teach youngsters the game and its values. However, it’s the past that has created a particularly solid foundation at RCC. In 1899, a group of golfers came together to play on a rudimentary course in the south part of town off Franklin Road. Then a year later, the name Roanoke Country Club was registered for the purposes of “golf, tennis, gunning and other games and sports.” Various parts of Roanoke were the base for early club members and, in 1905, the present site was purchased. Alexander Findlay, an immigrant Scot and pro golfer, designed the first nine holes and improvements continued until, in 1919, the reputable Tillinghast was hired to design a full, 18-hole course that would open the following year. In 1966, the number of holes at RCC rose to 27, designed by Ellis Maples, a protégé of another great course designer, Donald Ross.

“Tillie,” as Albert Warren Tillinghast was known, would eventually design or remodel 15 U.S. Open and PGA Championship courses as well as the 1935 Ryder Cup links at Ridgewood Country Club in New Jersey. His philosophy for a perfect golf hole is well-illustrated at RCC: “a controlled shot to a closely guarded green is the surest test of any man’s game.” Since then, RCC has played a central role in top quality golfers emerging from the state of Virginia, starting with the great Sam Snead, a Virginia native, major winners Curtis Strange and Lanny Wadkins and current stars Billy Hurley of the PGA Tour and his LPGA counterpart Brittany Lang who all know the course well. One of the recent reasons for RCC’s high status within Virginia golf is the Scott Robertson
Memorial
tournament
that
involves boys and girls divided into age categories of 14 and under and 15-18. The tournament was started in memory of RCC member Scott who died of infectious mononucleosis in the summer of 1982. The list of former winners is a who’s who of local and national golf stars and includes Hunter Mahan, Webb Simpson and Paula Creamer. Trees are planted around the course with plaques dedicated to all the winners of the event and it’s fun to find the most famous— and also the less well-known—names as you progress along the fairways. But RCC is not just a course that professional stars enjoy to play. Stars of stage and screen have graced the links over the years including the latest: rock star Alice Cooper who played a quick nine holes one early morning in April this year before then playing his concert that evening in Salem. Ross Biddiscombe’s acclaimed books Ryder
Cup Revealed: Tales of the Unexpected and Cruel School are available in hardback, paperback or e-book formats on Amazon.

all abilities, and that is true of the Redbud, Crabapple and Dogwood nines. There are relatively few bunkers—only 10 on the fairways over the entire 27 holes, while although greens are not surrounded by sand, they are often elevated and require a decent chipping game. Over the last 100 years, there have been several course changes and remodeling projects, including the latest by Tom Clark and Lester George, but the six Tillie holes—the first, second, third, seventh, eighth and ninth on the Crabapple nine—are the most notable. Apart from those six holes, my personal favorite section of RCC is the group of holes on the Dogwood nine around the lake—a splendid

addition in 2000. The water makes the tee shot on the 2nd a perfect opportunity for every golfer to commit to their stroke because, if you don’t, then it’ll be wet. I’m sure Tillie would approve. And, the fact that so many tremendous champions have enjoyed Roanoke Country Club over the years is the best indication that this is a course worthy of its outstanding reputation.

verything you've heard about Dubai's unbridled extravagance is true. Well, at least most of it is. (I’d been told that most taxis I’d hail
would be Mercedes and with luck even Lamborghinis. Turns out, that wasn’t quite true.) However, this city–technically an Emirate–perched on the Persian Gulf is considered the most expensive in the Middle East. It is the flashiest sister of the United Arab Emirates, where the moneyed class from around the globe comes to experience the best and often brashest aspects of modernity.

I ensconce myself on Dubai’s most famous parcel of land, the manmade Palm Island at Atlantis, a glammedout property that affords access to some of the city’s most unusual experiences. High rollers can book the 10,000-sqauare-foot Royal Suite, where the soap is flecked with solid gold, or the Neptune Suite, where the walls face the aquarium. Mere mortals (like myself ) book spacious rooms with views of the Dubai skyline and the waterfront. You need not be an overnight guest in order to delve into the resort’s activities such as the waterpark, dolphin and sea lion encounters, the Lost Chamber Aquarium (home to more than 65,000 marine animals), and high-end shops. You can snorkel, Scuba and PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) certify in the property’s lagoon. And, this just may be the only (safe) place to hand feed sharks and stingrays after sunset.

A WORLD APART (CON TI N U ED)
For me, the highlight was the resort’s ShuiQi Spa, a two-story oasis with a trickling water wall and a celestial domed ceiling. I booked a 30-minute ZeroBody floating treatment that promised to ease jetlag, which after a 14-hour flight, I desperately needed. I lay on a water mattress pulsing with LED lights from which I was guided into a meditative state. The treatment was said to stimulate circulation and perhaps it did, but its
Ossiano restaurant
other claim to fame–relaxation–was evident. One of Dubai’s most extraordinary restaurants, the glow-
Spice souk
ing underwater Ossiano, is one of the big draws at Atlantis. The menu naturally nods towards the sea, which can make you feel just a touch uncomfortable as you watch your dinner’s brethren swim past. The night I dined here, it didn’t take long before a 600-pound grouper fixed an intense and persistent stare at my dining companion. To experience the essence of Dubai, though, you will have to resist the gravitational pull of Atlantis and head a few miles into downtown. The city is known for its steady march of high-rise towers, which dazzle and disorient, like the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, which soars 2,722 feet. Because Dubai is poised to host the World Expo in 2020, the skyline continues to be populated with construction cranes. As for the famed malls of Dubai, these temples of retail don’t disappoint. There are dancing fountains, a huge array of boutiques from Chanel to local silk shops, and if you hit the Mall of the Emirates, an indoor ski slope. The malls are your best chance to brush elbows with locals: men in kanduras, anklelength white cotton shirts, and women in everything from black burqas to daisy duke shorts. You can still discover pockets of traditional Arab life near to the new downtown. Take an abra, a traditional wooden boat, for the most atmospheric transfer across the Dubai Creek, and land at the docks steps from the souk. As you navigate the warren of narrow lanes that weave through the souks, the kaleidoscope of scents that waft from the stalls stand testament to a time not so long ago and prior to the oil boom when this was a thriving regional center, well regarded for its perfume and spice trades throughout the Arab world. After exploring the souk, I hail a taxi back to my home base at the Atlantis. As I’m sped along the fast new highway, the frenzy of the traditional neighborhood of squat buildings and dusty intersections gives way to the orderly new downtown with its gleaming skyscrapers. As we pull onto the dramatic drive that leads to Palm Island, I spot a Lamborghini, this one canary yellow. It zooms past my dinged up taxicab, and I can’t help but smile as the driver’s white ghutrah (headscarf ) flutters in Atlantis

MW does not disappoint in releasing the 2017 X3 xDrive35i, a Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV) with potential for a family road trip or track day. With four different drive modes, the ease of moving from city to mountains is seamless. The default comfort mode relaxes the throttle for
everyday driving. For those eco-friendly drivers, the Eco-pro mode is, even more, fuel efficient by shifting at a lower RPM. The X3 combines its features to provide not only an ideal driving machine but an environmentally conscious one as well. At a red light, the X3 turns off the engine to prevent waste. While many of us enjoy cooling our car down in the summer; BMW engineers do not condone the practice of “puffing,” or starting up a vehicle before driving. To avoid this cushioned process, BMW has provided an app for drivers to turn fans on or open the windows on summer days. If you have forgotten where you parked, this app also allows you to flash the vehicle's lights, honk the horn and much more. Day-to-day driving has never been safer; not only is the driver looking out for hazardous conditions, but the vehicle is as well. To make the driver aware of danger, the steering wheel vibrates when nearing a potential hazard. These include; lane departures, active blind spot awareness, and Active Cruise Control. These safety features combine to maintain a safe distance from you and the driver ahead. Steering wheel vibrations are not the only way the X3 alerts the driver; break interruptions will occur for potential frontal or pedestrian collisions. July 2017 | Roanoke Lifestyle
