he month of May brings spring tulips with its warm days and cool nights. I think of May as the transition month into the dog days of summer and my trips to Memphis.

Memphis in May is a month of festivals and great music. The first Memphis in May was in 1977 featuring the Memphis blues, a sound that is like no other, ribs and a touch of rockabilly. To appreciate the Memphis sound, one must understand its raw history of music.

In the 1940s, Beale Street was home to black musicians that brought the sound of cotton field hollers into the juke joints and clubs. WDIA was the first radio station programmed entirely for African-Americans and where B.B. King was a DJ. Later in the 1950s, King recorded with Sun Records, which was Sun Studios at the time. It was also in the '50s a young man from the Lauderdale Courts public housing project would beg to get into the clubs on Beale Street to listen to the music, bellowing the blues. His persistence paid off, and in 1954 he recorded "That's All Right" at Sun Studios for under $4; he was Elvis Presley. Other unknown musicians in the 1950s who recorded at Sun Studios included Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Howlin’ Wolf and Ike Turner.

During the '50s and '60s, Estelle Axton with her brother, Jim Stewart, created some of the most important music in American history. They brought black and white musicians together to record at their studio, known as Stax Records. Stax Records gave a voice to great musicians such as Sam and Dave, Issac Hayes, Otis Redding, Booker T and the MGs and Aretha Franklin—who lived right around the corner.

Hi Records, at the same time was cutting vinyl singles for Al Green with his recording of “Love and Happiness” and in the '70s Ann Peebles recorded her soulful tune, “I Can’t Stand the Rain.”

The Memphis sound is iconic in American music history. I have been exposed to that sound as long as I’ve had ears. My mother was from Memphis and had a great appreciation of the sound from her hometown.

So, I chose a guitar for the cover, as a tribute to my mother—who enjoyed the Memphis sound—for Mother’s Day. She especially enjoyed Ike and Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary."

ere’s a challenge: I’m assuming that because you’re reading this article, you would probably consider yourself at least a casual sports fan, so can you name a dozen current female athletes who are genuinely global superstars? Not easy, is it? And don't be surprised because it’s a difficult task for most people unless they resort to Google. That’s because it’s a sad fact that women’s professional sports lag far behind men’s, not in the passion and expertise that is on view, but in the amount of money they play for and media awareness that each gender achieves. And you can prove my point by now naming 12 worldwide male superstars. Much easier, yes?

In your female superstar list, you might have the Williams sisters and Maria Sharapova from tennis, maybe Lindsey Vonn the skier and, certainly if you’d done this last year, you’d have included some Olympians like gymnast Simone Biles or swimmer Katie Ledecky. By contrast, not only would the list of 12 superstar male athletes be simpler to compile, but you wouldn’t even have to give all their full names—LeBron, Aaron, Clayton, Usain, etc. are all so well-known that attaching surnames James, Rodgers, Kershaw and Bolt would be unnecessary. You see, this awareness inequality is not a 21st-century phenomenon; women have been playing catch-up with men’s pro sports forever.

But then we can look at golf. Perhaps alongside tennis, this is the sport that should right now be capturing worldwide attention—if not the same money—for women at a similar level as men. Female pros are just as smart and talented, they’re far more glamorous and they work great with sponsors. However, they play for far less money and attract far fewer fans.

So, the questions are: will that situation ever change and can golf be a leader in this search for sporting equality?

First, let’s just establish that golf is the perfect sport—even better than tennis—for men and women to enjoy together. Both genders can play 18 holes on the same course at the same time with neither distracted by the other. The men can play off one set of tees, the women off another.

They will use their own clubs, keep their own score and have a perfectly fine time. OK, they can also swim or ski or cycle together, but they can’t actually compete, and that’s where golf scores so highly, at least for amateurs. With handicapping, the men and women can legitimately compete against each other and either gender has an equal chance to win. The two genders can also play alternate shot competitions together as a pair, just like mixed doubles in tennis. Many golf clubs already stage mixed events where the skill of both players is tested to the max. But what about the pros? It’s here where the equality breakthrough is required, where the women’s game needs a little help and why last year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro were so disappointing.

It was the first time since 1904 that golf had made it to the games. The likes of Justin Rose, Bubba Watson, Henrik Stenson and Rickie Fowler turned up along with the top female players including Lexi Thompson of the U.S., Lydia Ko, the world No. 1 from New Zealand and the best pros from the many strong Asian nations. In fact, while some of the world’s best male players cried off with excuses based around possibly contracting the Zika virus, virtually every one of the best female golfers competed in Brazil.

The specially designed Olympic Golf Course was the venue for both the men’s and women’s events with 34 different nations represented. England’s Justin Rose took the men’s gold medal, and Inbee Park of South Korea won the women’s, both in two 72-hole stroke play competitions played within a 10-day period. But, despite plenty of fans being on-site for all eight days of golf and hundreds of millions watching on TV around the world, the golfing authorities and the Olympic bosses missed a trick—where was the mixed event, perhaps a one-day, 36-hole alternate shot contest with two-person, male-female teams representing their countries?

Had the mixed tournament happened, could you imagine how many golf clubs around the world would’ve staged similar events? It would’ve sent a clear message that golf is for all genders. Heavy media criticism may lead to a mixed

tournament in Tokyo in 2020.

And why stop there?

In 2014, the men’s U.S. Open was played at the famous Pinehurst No. 2 golf course in North Carolina, finishing on its traditional Father’s Day Sunday with Germany’s Martin Kaymer crowned as champion. Then in an unprecedented move, the women’s U.S. Open began on the very same course the following Thursday, and Michelle INBEE PARK HAS LED THE SOUTH KOREAN DOMINATION OF WOMEN’S GOLF FOR SEVERAL SEASONS.

What a buzz it created for both tournaments. Even the male and female pros who met up on the range during the middle weekend were excited

by this innovation. Again, it illustrated to everyone that male and female golfers can be together—just like at all those tennis grand slams—and the fans can watch all of the golfers over the whole fortnight of competition.

With both the PGA Tour in America and the European Tour having new chief executives who seem alert to the bigger picture in golf, there’s a real chance of meaningful steps forward. And let’s also hope

the two CEOs realize that one potential solution that doesn’t need a second outing is for female pros to play in men's events. Michelle Wie and Annika Sorenstam were among the most recent women to try their luck on the PGA Tour. It just caused negative headlines—neither woman made a cut and certain high-profile male golfers like former Masters champion Vijay Singh voiced scathing opinions of what they basically called a publicity stunt.

So, in 2017 with the Solheim Cup as one of golf’s real highlights and with increasing numbers of young, talented women playing top-quality golf all over the world, the female half of the sport is in good shape. And if you’ve never bought a ticket for a women’s golf tournament or only ever watch men’s golf on TV, then it’s time to give a chance to the women. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed, and there’ll be a few more names for your female global superstar list next time.

lot can change in 175 years. And some things can stay the same. During that time, Hollins University has gone from being Valley Union Seminary in 1842 to the strong, growing institution it is today. But,

the school has retained its commitment to single-sex education, and students still climb Tinker Mountain every year on Tinker Day. Valley Union was founded in 1842 by the Rev. Joshua Bradley, a New York minister who bought the property. At the time it had both male and female departments. Four years later, Charles Lewis Cocke succeeded Bradley and, in 1851, recommended to the board of trustees the male department be eliminated. In 1855, John and Ann Hollins gave the young school $5,000, and the name was changed to Hollins Institute. Hollins began drawing students from outside the area in 1873.

The four-year Bachelor of Arts degree program began in 1901. The institute formally changed its name to Hollins College in 1910. The English department began offering a master’s degree in creative writing in 1960 and has since produced three Pulitzer Prize winners: Annie Dillard, Henry Taylor and Natasha Trethewey. Hollins introduced the then-novel graduate program, Master of Arts in Liberal Studies in 1969, though other graduate programs began as early as 1958. Hollins became a university in 1998.

During its history, the school has endured war—including the Civil War that nearly came to its doorstep—epidemics, economic downturns, the turbulence of the 1960s and '70s and the changing trends in education that are bringing single-sex education back into favor.

The 175th anniversary celebration began last August with the academic year and will wrap up early next month with the reunion, says Brook Dickson, executive assistant to the president.

As the anniversary year closes, Hollins has much to be proud of, according to Jeff Hodges, director of public relations. This past fall, the school saw its largest incoming first-year class in 17 years, and it is operating with no debt and a balanced budget. Both Hodges and President Nancy Oliver Gray speak with pride about the Career Compass Program, which prepares students for life after Hollins through internships, mentoring and alumnae engagement.

This academic year, Hollins has 654 undergraduate students and 174 graduate students in 10 programs.

The graduate program admits male students. Dickson says Hollins’ recent growth is an indication that families see single-sex education as a “niche market.” Hodges adds that single-sex education allows the students to “find their voices and develop a level of self-confidence. It has a transformative effect.”

Hollins’ small size matters, too. Gray says a small liberal arts school gives students and faculty a “hands-on experience” which helps prepare students for continuing their education or for their careers.

Gray, who retires at the end of June, calls the Hollins community “extraordinary and unique.” She says the students and faculty are “invested in each other in a caring and civil community. The students come first.”

While English remains the most popular field of study, Gray says biology, chemistry and environmental science are right behind it, a trend she attributes to the recent emphasis on STEM—science, technology, engineering and math—for young women. To enhance its science programs, Hollins is renovating the Dana Science Building.

In her 12 1/2 years at Hollins—the average stay for a college president is six to seven years—Gray has seen many changes. She says the demographic of college-bound students is becoming more diverse and families are looking for a good return on investment for their tuition. She notes technology has vastly changed not just in the classroom, but in how students interact with each other.

“Students are growing and changing—becoming more responsible,” she says. “We need to realize that and not overreact” to social media.

As she looks back, she says she’s proud of the emphasis on career preparation.

“It starts with liberal arts,” which teach students to communicate, think and solve, “to learn to learn.” She called it “one of the best preparations for the workforce.”

She says the internships, which take students around the country, the mentoring and the connections between alumnae and students are creating a “new women's network” instead of the old boys' network. And, she notes, they are developing strong friendships. Recent internships have sent students to New York City, Washington, D.C., Richmond, Atlanta, Chapel Hill, Cleveland and Philadelphia.

She’s also proud of the school’s emphasis on campus inclusivity.

“Everyone feels welcome and respected,” she says, adding she sees an increase in “cultural competency” on the more diverse campus.

At the same time, Hollins has kept its academic standards high. “Our faculty is first-rate, and the students are engaged.”

Gray will leave Hollins in a strong financial position. She said the school’s endowment is the third largest in the Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges, behind Washington & Lee and the University of Richmond. She’ll also leave behind a beautifully maintained campus. Hodges says Hollins has been designated a Tree Campus USA—one of only four in Vriginia—by the Arbor Day Foundation.

While Hollins will welcome its new president, Pareena Lawrence, in July, Gray looks forward to her next chapter. She and her husband, David Maxson, plan to stay in Roanoke. She’s looking forward to being active in the community.

A farmer rests in the corner of his barn in Arapiraca, Brazil. Before him lies the beginning of an enormous coil of rope tobacco. Rope tobacco, in its various forms, is the oldest method for curing tobacco that still exists.

Through a series of letters and packages—mostly delivered through the building’s doorman—she and the CEO connected. She met with him and presented her ideas. Within six weeks she was on her way to Switzerland to discuss details, and, after contract negotiations, left for Indonesia.

The “Tobacco People” project started in 2011. Philip Morris International sent her to Indonesia, Malawi and Brazil. In each country she recorded every aspect of tobacco from the seed to the sale. Over the years she also visited the Dominican Republic, Cuba and Tanzania, and hopes to raise the funds to travel to India, Japan and Turkey.

“This project crossed the line from commercial photography into fine art,” she says, adding that her typical assignments include portraits, bar mitzvahs, weddings, products and, even once, jewelry for dogs.

“I’m passionate about it,” she says.

The amount of research she’s done into tobacco across the globe has made her an expert on a side of the subject.

“I know more than most people.”

Talking with her about it is a lesson in history that follows tobacco from what is now Brazil as the early Portuguese explorers spread it around the world. Her travels in Brazil took her to a remote location in the Amazon, where she found one of the most ancient forms of tobacco curing in existence.

During the age of exploration, tobacco was considered a “prestige commodity,” Hazlegrove says. It was used

by Portuguese traders to facilitate the slave trade with African chiefs. When the slaves were brought to America, some brought their tobacco knowledge with them. She notes the planting of tobacco in Africa predated the organized cultivation of tobacco in Virginia by the English.

“People today only think of tobacco as a killer,” she says, adding that in the 16th and 17th centuries it was thought to be a cure for almost any ailment. “It’s interesting that in the end, they may be right.”

Current research is exploring biomedical uses for the tobacco plant. “From panacea to killer to cure.”

Hazlegrove began her tobacco journey with an offer of an exhibition at the Taubman Museum. Six years later, she came full circle, when the museum, along with the O. Winston Link Museum and the Harrison Museum of African American Culture opened an unusual three-part show of her work and research.

“For me, the thing that’s amazing is how the project is ongoing and is evolving—like tobacco and the view of it around the world.”

olor is used in many different ways all around us. As humans, we see thousands of colors every day—in our clothing, our food, our

vehicles and in our homes just to name a few places. Color is everywhere.

The psychology of color is understanding hues of color as a determinant of human behavior. Think about how certain colors affect you.

Color psychology is used heavily in marketing strategies and advertising campaigns as well. Color influences perceptions we have that are not as obvious, such as of food.

An all-white room may make us feel less cluttered and more relaxed simply because there aren’t as many colors for us to process all of the time. The palette is neutral so that our thoughts and emotions aren’t affected by the natural reactions that we might have to colors.

Jeremiah Young, creative director at Kibler & Kirch interior design firm in Billings and Red Lodge, often asks his clients to consider what colors they have in their closet when choosing what colors to use to decorate their homes. His idea is those colors you have chosen most often to wear are what you are naturally drawn to as an individual so that color palette in your home will be most pleasing to you as well.

tepping into Ann Bondurant Trinkle’s art studio, a visitor can be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of things—wood, metal, found

objects. Trinkle, herself, isn’t daunted by it.

“I have an odd visual memory,” she says. “I know where things are.

I’m a better finder than the rest of my family.”

Her studio, in an old building in the Roanoke Industrial Park, is a feast for the eyes. First, there’s the work room then there’s her art.

She’s been creating 3-D/2-D pieces since 2000 but says she “feels a change coming. I may lose some of the imagery. Less drawing and more abstract, but still telling a story.”

Currently, each piece tells a story through a painting or drawing, an assemblage of objects and an interesting frame.

Trinkle didn’t set out to be an artist. She was going to be a marine biologist, she says, but switched her major at Randolph Macon Woman’s College to art. She followed that up with a Master of Fine Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University. Her love of collecting things began in college when she started going to thrift stores.

“I’m a collector of crap—a hoarder,” she says, laughing.

“And I love wood and frames.”

Her grandfather and father had a workshop in the backyard, she says, where she liked to hang out. The wooden storage cabinet with many, many drawers, is in her workroom. She also learned some skills from them.

“I know how to put stuff together-ish," she says. "I don’t want to not make mistakes because sometimes Trinkle's artwork on her studio wall.

Her process begins “with an image or a story,” she says. “It’s an itch.” The subject matter may reflect what’s going on in her life, and the story evolves from there. Her pieces include such diverse items as her grandmother’s gloves, hair from a horse’s mane, drawing, hardware and wooden objects she’s created herself.

Trinkle said she often finds or builds the frame first and does the painting last. But, that won’t be the end. She’ll keep looking at a finished piece and find ways to change it.

“I like to edit.”

It comes back to the story. She calls her pieces “physical poetry.” She says “there’s something going on, but it’s not specific. I want it to be in the viewer’s head.” Her works invite close inspection. They’re also touchable. “It’s all about texture.”

The story is in the relationship among the various parts, which can include shackles, doll parts, walnut shells and shotgun shells. And the hardware.

“Hardware can tell a story,” she says. “You’re nailed; you’re chained; you’re screwed.”

Trinkle’s unique vision has her friends giving her bits and pieces, she said, looking at the variety of items in front of her—small pinecones, change and a series of rusty metal mechanical objects. She also admits to scavenging.

“I’ve embarrassed my children many a time,” she says as she laughs. “It’s just parts.”

And, as much as she likes using found objects, she likes making objects that look like they’ve been used.

The casual viewer might not know the difference.

“I just enjoy the process,” she says. “My art is one of the few places where I have control.”
