ashion: A popular trend, especially in styles of dress and ornament or manners of behavior.

The most inf luential designers of all time dressed famous women around the world, creating a culture forging their designs into our lives throughout the years. Coca Chanel said, “Fashion fades; only style remains the same.” Indeed it is style that creates the perfect little black dress with a stylish accessory and shoes along with the propositional clutch.

Each designer throughout the decades created their own style and turned it into fashion and fashion icons. Valentino Garavani said, “Only wear clothes that make you feel alive.”

Valentino certainly defined his aesthetic with the use of exquisite and signature red fabrics which students and designers continue to study and emulate to this day.

I chose the infamous silhouette of the pillbox hat to illustrate how fashion and style indeed leave its mark on fashion history with the repetition that seems to appear and reappear with the style of today’s designers. When you think or see the pillbox hat, first lady Jacqueline Kennedy is etched in our memory; it was perfectly placed as an accessory to her Halston-designed suits.

The pillbox hat actually dates back to the Roman Empire. Furthermore, it was used as a military hat with a chin strap, worn by British ground troops during WWI. It was popular in the '30s, '50s but not until the '60s did the pillbox hat gain its popularity.

We evolve with fashion and style. The pillbox hat is considered to be a calot; which means cap in French—a close-fitting cap that sits off the face with no visor or brim, shaped to fit the wearer’s head. How magnificent! When Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge was first seen wearing a calot, the trend was dawned into a favorable accessory around the world today.

So, how we emulate the fashion and styles of today actually belongs to you—how you feel and carry yourself with style, confidence and glamour. I couldn’t say it any better than Christian Dior, “Deep in every heart slumbers a dream and the couturier knows it: every woman is a princess.”

The television series "Downton Abbey" has been a wildly successful British cultural export. The riveting saga of the Earl of Grantham's family and servants has introduced the world to the manners, society and snobbery of the turn of the century. Yet the tales of intrigue, adventure and romance around Highclere Castle in Hampshire—where "Downton Abbey" was filmed—are just as interesting as the fictional versions.

The most famous member of the family was George Highclere Castle's dining room

Herbert, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, great-grandfather of the current incumbent. In 1922, the Earl and his team of archaeologists, including renowned colleague Howard Carter, discovered the ancient tomb of Tutankhamun in Egypt's Valley of the Kings. It was front-page news around the world.

However, this spectacular archaeological find carried a high cost shortly afterward when Lord Carnarvon accidentally cut open a mosquito bite while shaving and the wound became infected. The infection then spread to his blood and he died soon after in his hotel in Cairo. The Earl’s untimely death was blamed on the so-called “Curse of the Pharaohs” which is supposed to strike anyone who disturbs the mummy of an ancient Egyptian king.

Then, believers in the curse made the same connection after most of the Earl’s remarkable collection of Egyptian antiquities was taken from the family and sold to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York because of the threat of inheritance tax. Yet, the story had a happier ending when, in 1987, a number of treasures were unexpectedly discovered in a cupboard at Highclere; these are now on exhibit in the cellars underneath the castle along with other replica Egyptian artifacts.

The historical connection between Highclere and the Carnarvons dates back to 1679, but the original building was constructed around a series of older houses and the original foundations that date back more than 900 years. The spectacular frontage that makes it one of the world’s most photogenic stately homes is the product of a large-scale remodel and rebuild that took place from 1838 to 1842 at the request of the 3rd Earl. It was carried out by celebrated architect Sir Charles Barry and happened around the same time Barry was helping to rebuild the Houses of Parliament in London, which he had designed.

The similarities between Highclere and the Palace of Westminster are striking.

Barry’s design of Highclere was in the high Italianate Victorian style and the building is one of the most important examples of mid-Victorian architecture in England. The castle is further regarded for its gardens, modeled in 1771 by England’s most famous garden designer, Lancelot “Capability” Brown.

For the modern-day visitor, walking into the castle is to immediately recognize many of the key locations in "Downton Abbey." For example, the library, with thousands of ancient books, some from as long ago as the 1500s, features in many meetings between the fictional Earl of Grantham and his family and staff. reality, in the 19th century, it was used as a withdrawing room by the 4th Earl to welcome statesmen and men from literature and the arts. In fact, the ladies also had their own drawing room that is still used by the family and was popular with the fictional Dowager Countess played by Dame Maggie Smith.

Away from the glamour, though, Highclere’s finances were in turmoil for many years, even after the sale of the 5th Earl’s Egyptian treasures in the early part of the 20th century. Fortunately, his wife Almina was an heiress of the Rothschild family and her generosity ensured the castle’s survival for many years. Almina was another fascinating member of the Carnarvon family and was one of the best-known socialites of her day. After the Earl’s death, she funded hospitals in London and would become renowned for her nursing abilities.

Following World War II, however, taxes were hugely increased on British stately homes and wages rose steeply, so the cost of maintaining great houses became increasingly difficult, and Highclere faced a constant battle to pay its way. That was until the fees from television and movie filming came along and helped balance the books. In modern times, the castle became a perfect location long before "Downton Abbey," previously welcoming various British TV series as well as movies including Kevin Costner's "Robin Hood Prince of Thieves" and "Eyes Wide

Shut," directed by Stanley Kubrick.

Yet, it was the phenomenal worldwide success of

"Downton Abbey" that put Highclere on the map for tens of millions of fans of British history and allowed the Carnarvons to welcome increasing numbers of visitors to tour the castle. A veritable Downton industry has spawned a huge range of merchandise, books, tours and much more including several high-class weddings per year, regular conferences and other events like the county show. These generate income to help meet the annual costs of running Highclere, an amount that totals around $1 million annually.

And, if you want a few royal stories, then last year Queen Elizabeth II stayed at Highclere shortly before her 90th birthday celebrations, while in 1895 the 5th Countess spent nearly half a million pounds on a weekend of entertainment for the then Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). That amount converts to over £50 million, or $59.4 million in modern currency.

Now, the parallels between the past, present and fiction are stronger than ever, and so this historical legacy of Highclere and its current successful state are in good hands with George, the 8th Earl, and the Countess, Lady Fiona. Highclere is well worth a visit but it is closed to the public on a number of occasions, CONTINUED >

so it’s well worth checking to make sure that you chose the correct weekday. Or you could visit on a weekend, which gives every "Downton" fan a chance to recreate one of the show’s most quoted lines spoken when Dowager Lady Grantham famously asked in the series: "What is a weekend?"

The Virginia native, who has lived in Lynchburg and Roanoke, actually studied accounting and has taken just two art classes. The rest, she says, “just comes out of my head.”

She’s still involved in all facets of La De Da. “I’m not sure about that blue scarf,” she tells one of her employees—she has six—working on a display. The young woman assures her she isn’t finished yet.

“It’s my baby, my business,” Carole explains.

Her goal is to “have merchandise no one else has; to be as different as you can be,” she says. “It’s fun to be so creative. We change things constantly.”

During our visit, she and her staff were putting up fall decorations.

“We’re having fun," she says. "It’s always something different.”

Needless to say, Carole wears only clothes from La De Da. “I own nothing from anywhere else.”

The store offers all price points: “from $28 dresses to $328 dresses,” Carole says.

They maintain customer books that record all of a customer’s purchases, their likes, their needs. If something comes in that she thinks a customer will like, she’ll call them.

“We try to be wardrobe sellers," she says. "When you come in, we try to match what you’ve bought in the past.”

Customer service is paramount for Carole and her staff.

“We take into account what works with a customer’s figure. We try to be honest," she explains. "We don’t want someone going out of here looking bad. We care about our customers. They’re as good to us as we are to them.”

So what are La De Da’s customers seeing this fall? Carole says leggings are still popular, especially leggings that “do something different.”

She says to look for leggings with lace or embroidery, or that are made of velour. Wide-leg pants are back as well as oversized sweaters.

“You almost need to dress in layers,” she says. “So many things are in, you don’t even know what’s in,” she says, laughing. But, she La De Da sells clothing, shoes, jewelry, accessories, furniture, lamps and more.

“I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” Carole says.

Her windows are showstoppers. Several times a year in one of the windows they create a beautiful dress out of wire, cheese cloth and other mixed media. At Christmas, the dress is made of candy.

This summer’s featured cloth butterflies. She said she used to do it herself, with help from her staff. But the butterfly dress was created solely by Robyn Gross and Rachel Morris, two of the women who work for her.

The windows are just part of the artsy, cool vibe that Carole likes about the Market. She says she sees symmetry in the shops, restaurants and art on the Market.

“We want to give back as much as we get,” she says. “We want to make Roanoke pretty and be a reason why people want to live here.”

1 lbs Asparagus, 1 bunch Watercress, 3 Tbsp Butter or olive oil 1 cup Spring Onions, 2 cloves Garlic, 2 tbsp Fresh herbs,

Process

Over medium heat, pour one tablespoon of olive oil in a well-seasoned cast iron skillet. Add asparagus and saute until tender and lightly seared on all sides. Remove from heat and cut into 1-inch pieces. Season with salt and set aside. In a medium saucepan, heat remaining butter or oil, add spring onions and garlic and cook until translucent. Add fresh watercress, asparagus and herbs. Add stock and heat until all ingredients are tender. Transfer to food processor, add lemon juice and blend until smooth. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Garnish with goat cheese, if desired.

The commercial team set up shop in December, according to Sherry Dillon, vice president and financial center manager. The branch—located on Ogden Road—opened by appointment only in January, and the grand opening was held in May. She says the bank is hoping to open more branches in Roanoke.

Since American National opened its doors in 1909, it has grown from a single branch on Main Street in Danville to 25 branches in Virginia and North Carolina. Before moving into Roanoke, the bank had opened branches at Smith Mountain Lake and in Rocky Mount, Bedford, Chatham and Lynchburg.

“This was the next logical step,” Sherry says.

American National has managed to keep up with the latest trends in banking while maintaining the personal touch that matters to customers. The bank offers online and mobile banking, including mobile deposit, Sherry says, “but you can still call me at my desk. We’re here to help with even the small questions

Sherry may be new to American National—she was one of about a dozen people who came over from the former Valley Bank—but she is certainly not new to banking. Her career began 34 years ago at FNEB, which became Dominion, then First Union.

“I came from the days of adding machines, and banks closing between 2 and 3 p.m.,” she says.

If she misses the foot traffic of old, she’s proud that technology lets her customers “bank at your convenience.” The branch is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The financial center on Ogden Road also employs mortgage loan officers, investment bankers and commercial bankers.

American National Bank fixed up the adjacent ball field for T-ball games.

“We offer all the services,” she says.

The ATM is in a drive-thru, and Sherry says because this is American National’s only ATM in Roanoke, customers can use their cards at any local ATM without the usual service charge.

And though the bank may be headquartered in Danville, she notes that everyone who works in Roanoke is local.

“We really are your local bankers,” she says.

American National has another unique feature: an adjacent T-ball field, which came with the purchase of the building. The bank fixed it up, and the Cave Spring Rec Foundation plays games there.

“I love Roanoke,” she says. “It’s beautiful, and the people are so friendly. I don’t think we always appreciate that.”
