Fall Into Style

Gabi De la Rosa | gabi.delarosa@citylifestyle.com
I’m excited to share our annual Style & Design issue of River Oaks Lifestyle as we move into one of the most fabulous times of the year. There is something about September that has always felt like a fresh start to me. After the travel, activity, and wonderfully hectic pace of summer, life begins to settle back into a familiar rhythm. Children return to school, calendars begin to fill, and we turn our attention toward fall, the holiday season, and the many galas, fundraisers, and celebrations that bring Houston to life. Our Style & Design issue is always especially fun because it gives us the opportunity to explore two creative worlds: interior design and personal style. Both offer meaningful ways to refresh our surroundings, express who we are, and step into a new season feeling inspired. Inside this issue, you will find uplifting ideas designed to energize the way you think about your home, your wardrobe, and your own unique sense of style. For me, September also feels like a time to plug back into Houston. As a native Houstonian, I remain deeply grateful for this incredible city and for the creativity, generosity, and entrepreneurial spirit of the people who make it so special. I am especially grateful for you, our reader community, and for the local business owners who entrust us with sharing their stories and promoting the work they do. I hope you will join us in supporting these businesses by shopping, dining, and choosing local whenever possible. Every local purchase is an investment in the people and places that make our community feel like home. Here’s to a beautiful and inspiring new season!

IF YOU E AT ONE T HING The Chef’s Table River Oaks, Chicken Pendurada.
SOUTH AFRICAN FLAVORS MEET OPEN-FIRE GRILLING IN THIS SIGNATURE DISH LAYERED WITH SPICES AND VIBRANT SAUCES. The Chef's Table River Oaks has become a destination for diners looking to explore the flavors of South African cuisine. Chef Paul Friedman's menu draws inspiration from the country's rich culinary heritage, blending influences from Dutch, Portuguese, Indian, and indigenous traditions. While the menu is filled with everything from ostrich filet to fresh seafood, the Chicken Pendurada showcases the restaurant's signature style. chefstablehouston.com
THE CHICKEN
The Chicken Pendurada begins with approximately 10 ounces of premium chicken. “The chicken is marinated in a bay leaf mild yellow curry before cooking, allowing the flavors to fully penetrate the meat and keep it exceptionally tender and juicy," says Chef Paul Friedman. “It is then grilled over an open flame to develop a light char before being finished with our signature sauces.”
THE SPICES
The marinade reflects South Africa's diverse culinary traditions. It creates a balanced flavor profile with earthy warmth and gentle sweetness.
14
C HE F ’S SE LE CT ION | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
"The marinade blends South African-inspired chutney with turmeric, paprika, ginger, garlic, and onion," Friedman says. "We want those warming spices to infuse the chicken all the way through instead of just seasoning the outside."
THE VEGETABLES
Red and green bell peppers and red onions are also used with the chicken to add freshness, color, and texture. "We chose red and green bell peppers and red onions because they develop a natural sweetness on the grill," Friedman says. "They caramelize alongside the chicken and complement the spices without overpowering the dish."
THE SAUCES
The finishing touches take the dish from flavorful to unforgettable. The grilled chicken is basted with Chef Paul's guava barbecue sauce, then drizzled with garlic butter and served with sweet chili sauce for dipping. “Together, the sauces create a layered flavor profile that's sweet, savory, and aromatic—bringing the entire dish together in a way that is both comforting and uniquely South Africaninspired," says Friedman.

J. Clint Hebert, Chief Executive Officer and J. Douglas Drummond, President.
At some point in life, many individuals spend months, even years, planning for a significant event, such as a wedding, the arrival of a child, or the purchase of a home. Yet many people fail to make end-of-life arrangements in advance. Pre-planning ensures that individual values, traditions, and personal wishes are honored in a meaningful way, reflecting the life and legacy of a loved one. For more than 80 years, Geo. H. Lewis & Sons Funeral Directors has served as Houston's most prestigious provider of funeral, cremation, and memorial services, while honoring the wishes of loved ones. Led by Chief Executive Officer J. Clint Hebert and President J. Douglas Drummond, this work continues today. “Planning ahead gives families time to reflect on what matters most, document wishes and have meaningful conversations,” explains Hebert. “It also allows families to make decisions deliberately during a time of peace and clarity rather than during a period of grief or uncertainty.” Drummond adds, “A meaningful celebration of life should feel as distinctive as the person it honors. Incorporating your own style begins with reflecting on the experiences, relationships, and values that have defined your life. Whether that means hosting an elegant gathering in a beautiful setting, showcasing a lifelong art collection, featuring favorite music, displaying family heirlooms, or highlighting philanthropic passions, every detail can help tell a more complete story. The team at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons takes great pride in caring for each family and personalizing each celebration from planning to the service and beyond. “Ideally, family members walk away saying, 'That was exactly who they were.’ They feel comforted by the stories shared, inspired by the legacy that was created, and connected to one another through the memories,” says Hebert. Families can plan everything from the setting, music, and family traditions to charitable giving, personal
collections, and more. Drummond encourages families to ask questions like “What story do we want this gathering to tell?” “How do we want future generations to remember your life and legacy?” From there, families can consider whether they envision a traditional funeral, a private family gathering, or a personalized celebration of life; where they would like services to be held; cultural or family traditions; and how they would like to highlight their passions, achievements, or military service. Today’s families do not always follow traditional templates; instead, they lean more towards creating a celebration that feels like planning a party, with the purpose of remembering a loved one in a personal, uplifting way. Celebrations of life can be modest or elaborate. Hebert notes that even if that memorialization does not occur at the funeral home, the staff at Geo. H. Lewis has helped design services that reflect the lifestyles of clients at private clubs, churches, and even personal residences. “There is no limit to how you tell your story. Your story is unique, yours,” he says. “Take the time to write down some best-loved memories and hard-won lessons. Write letters to loved ones to be shared. That will ensure your values, personality, and traditions are reflected.” “By documenting your wishes and sharing the traditions, relationships, accomplishments, and causes that have shaped your life, you give your family a roadmap for creating a tribute that feels genuine and deeply personal,” says Drummond. Hebert believes, “A thoughtfully planned celebration of life has the power to do more than honor someone’s past. It can strengthen family bonds, preserve important traditions, and remind everyone of the lasting impact one person can have on the people around them.”

Houston...
For
Ukraine.
For more than 20 years, Daar Foundation, a Houston-based nonprofit, has been committed to helping the people of Ukraine.
For more than two decades, one Houston nonprofit has stood with Ukraine. Today, that commitment is saving lives.
A Houston-based 501(c)(3)
Founded by longtime Houston residents who emigrated from Soviet Ukraine and later returned to help build one of the country's largest private investment firms, Daar began with a simple mission: supporting disadvantaged youth and preserving Ukrainian culture and heritage. But history had other plans.
Every dollar entrusted to Daar is directed toward meaningful, measurable impact. The foundation is entirely volunteer-run, allowing contributions to go directly toward humanitarian programs that provide medical care, emergency assistance, and hope to families whose lives have been upended by war.
Following Russia's invasion of Crimea in 2014, the foundation expanded its work to provide humanitarian assistance to communities affected by the conflict. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, Daar rapidly transformed into a major humanitarian relief organization, mobilizing its decades of relationships throughout Ukraine to deliver aid where it was needed most.
While the headlines may change, the need has not. Ukraine continues to face daily attacks, damaged infrastructure, and enormous humanitarian challenges. Daar Foundation remains committed to standing with the people of Ukraine for as long as they need help.
Today, from its headquarters in Houston, Daar coordinates the shipment of lifesaving medical equipment, mobile clinics, emergency vehicles, generators, and other essential humanitarian supplies directly into Ukraine. Working alongside trusted partners in both the United States and Ukraine, the foundation has delivered over fifty forty-foot shipping containers filled with medical supplies and equipment, deployed multiple mobile medical clinics serving communities in need, and funded critical infrastructure that helps hospitals, first responders, and civilians continue operating under extraordinarily difficult conditions.

PERSONAL STYLE THROUGH AFFORDABLE ART HOUSTON’S NEWEST FAIR CONNECTS COLLECTORS WITH ARTWORK REFLECTING INDIVIDUAL STYLE.
ARTICLE BY ALLYSON STRACZEK PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALMICHEAL FRAAY
Premiering October 15 - 18, 2026, at the George R. Brown Convention Center, Affordable Art Fair Houston will showcase contemporary artworks by local, national, and international artists and galleries, priced from $100 to $12,000. “We have seen incredible success from the past three editions in Austin, and felt it was the perfect time to expand into a market that already embraces collecting while simultaneously empowering a new generation of buyers,” explains Cori Teague, Affordable Art Fair Director for Houston and Austin.

“Houston is one of the country’s great collector cities and is home to generations of art patrons who understand the value of living with original art. Our goal is that the Affordable Art Fair becomes a place where established collectors, first-time buyers, galleries, and artists come together.” The Affordable Art Fair has created an environment that removes the intimidation often associated with art fairs. This event is a gallery-led fair featuring carefully curated presentations from professional galleries in Texas and around the world. Setting it apart is the buying experience at the fair. Visitors are encouraged to ask gallerists questions, discover artists, and learn about collecting, without feeling like a background in art is needed. The event aims for inclusivity. Late-night activities for adults and kidfriendly events during Family Hours give visitors the flexibility to choose the right time to visit. “The goal is to make collecting as accessible and approachable as possible to seasoned and new collectors alike,” Teague says. The weekend will feature programming, including special installations, discussion panels, live demonstrations, and interactive experiences. Visitors will see affordable art that has been through a selective application process. Everything from painting and sculpture to photography, mixed media, textiles, ceramics, and limited-edition prints will be featured. Teague explains, “We look for galleries with strong curatorial programs, professional presentations, and living artists whose work reflects diversity, quality, and creativity. As one of the country's most established collector markets, Houston deserves a fair that reflects the caliber of its arts community. Every gallery was selected with the goal of creating an inspiring and cohesive experience for both seasoned collectors and first-time buyers.”
Teague advises new buyers to purchase what they genuinely love rather than following trends or buying for investment value. “Choose artwork you will enjoy living with every day. When shopping for a specific space, bring wall measurements. For seasoned collectors, Teague suggests stepping outside your comfort zone. Discover a new gallery, explore an emerging artist, or consider a new medium. Some of the most memorable collections are built by embracing the unexpected and allowing a collection to evolve over time. “Art creates personality,” believes Teague. “Original artwork tells a story, sparks conversation, and reflects the people who live in a space. It has the power to completely change a room's atmosphere and create an emotional connection. A home feels finished when it reflects the people who live there, and art is often the piece that brings everything together.” At the end of the weekend, Teague hopes that visitors embrace the experience.“Whether someone purchases a piece or simply spends the weekend exploring, I hope they walk away feeling inspired, more confident, and excited about contemporary art. I want visitors to leave saying, "I didn't realize an art fair could feel like that." affordableartfair.com/fairs/houston/
Affordable Art Fair Houston invites visitors to explore thousands of contemporary works from local, national, and international artists.

Einaudi thrifted the dress pictured at Blue Bird Circle and the necklace from The Guild Shop.
Not many Houston thrifting enthusiasts know the city's secondhand scene better than Jess Einaudi. The owner of Carina Vintage and a popular social media content creator, Einaudi has spent years looking through racks, hunting down hidden gems, and sharing her best finds with followers. Since moving to Houston in 2019, she's become a huge supporter of the city’s vintage scene, sharing her insight on everything from designer treasures to the benefits of perfectly worn-in denim. Her biggest piece of advice for newbie thrifters is to be persistent. "If you don't find anything at the thrift store, go back the next day," Einaudi says. "Thrift inventory is so cyclical, and whether or not you find something can often depend on the day."
START WITH HOUSTON'S CHARITY SHOPS
While national chains have their place in the thrifting scene, Einaudi favors Houston's charity resale shops. Her favorites include The Guild Shop, The Blue Bird Circle, Charity Guild, The Cottage Shop, and MAM Resale. "Houston has some of the best charity shops in the country," she says. "They offer more curated thrifting mixed with consignment pieces, and the proceeds benefit local charities." According to Einaudi, each store has its own personality. The Cottage Shop is known for its impressive selection of vintage clothing, while the

Guild Shop offers an ever-changing inventory that seems to include just about everything imaginable. Einaudi also loves that prices often decrease the longer an item remains on the sales floor, making it easy to find serious bargains.
WHAT TO THRIFT THIS SEASON
This season, Einaudi is looking for linen shirts, breezy skirts, and leather belts. For beginners who might be overwhelmed by endless racks of clothing, she recommends heading straight for accessories. She also recommends checking the jewelry cases, especially at The Guild Shop, where costume pieces are displayed right next to fine jewelry. Many of the statement necklaces her followers ask about came from thrift stores in Houston. While shopping, Einaudi is constantly looking for cotton, linen, wool, and silk which offer better quality and longevity than synthetic fabrics. Learning to identify

natural fibers quickly helps narrow down overly full racks and increases the chances of finding hidden gems.
DON'T FEAR ALTERATIONS AND NEVER SKIP THE MEN'S SECTION
Some of Einaudi's favorite finds didn't fit perfectly when she found them. A tailor can turn an oversized dress, jacket, or pair of trousers into a wardrobe staple. Hemming dresses, taking in jackets, tapering pants, and even removing sleeves can completely change a garment's look. Her rule of thumb is to only invest in alterations when the fabric and quality justify the cost. One of Einaudi's most valuable thrift tips is to shop the entire store and "never sleep on the men's section." That's where she's found vintage Levi's, Ralph Lauren button-downs, pleated trousers, wool blazers, loafers, and cowboy boots. She says building a thrifted capsule wardrobe is easy with the classic basics hiding among the men's racks. @jess.einaudi

Custom furnishings, layered textures, and collected antiques define Laurie Pearson’s distinctive approach to luxury interior design.
“LUXURY ISN’T ABOUT PERFECTION. IT’S ABOUT CREATING TIMELESS HOMES THAT FEEL WELCOMING, PERSONAL, AND BEAUTIFULLY LIVED IN.”
When Laurie Pearson walks through one of her latest Houston projects, she isn't admiring the marble countertops or designer lighting fixtures. She's looking at the scale. The 11,000-square-foot Memorial home features soaring ceilings and expansive rooms that call for furnishings with a strong presence, which is why nearly every upholstered piece was custom-made. "If it's a large room, I want a beefy piece of furniture," Pearson says. "Most of the furniture in this house was custom-made because we could make sure it was exactly the size we wanted. The clients wanted fabrics they loved, and colors they loved, and custom gave us the opportunity to create something that was truly theirs." Most of Pearson's custom upholstery is crafted in Houston, allowing her to collaborate closely with local artisans and tailor every piece to the home's architecture and her clients' lifestyle. That close attention to proportion, comfort, and individuality has become the hallmark of Pearson's work. As founder and creative director of Houston-based L. Pearson Design, she has built a reputation for creating elegant interiors that CONTINUED >

never feel untouchable. Her projects have attracted celebrity clients, earned national recognition, and established her as one of Houston's premier luxury interior designers. Even with a portfolio encompassing Aspen, Arkansas, Florida, and beyond, she says Houston will always remain the home base of her business. Pearson describes her aesthetic as "livable luxury," and believes there should be a balance of beauty and comfort. "I want my clients to walk into a space that is elegant and thoughtfully curated, but also comfortable enough to truly live in," she says. "A home should be inviting, functional, and reflect the people who live there, not feel like a museum. Luxury is about quality, craftsmanship, and timeless design, but it should always be enjoyed every day." Growing up in Mississippi, Pearson watched her mother fill their home with antiques, encouraging an appreciation for craftsmanship that would later be important to her career. She eventually owned an antique store in New Orleans, where customers frequently sought advice on designing entire rooms instead of simply selecting furniture. When she moved to Houston more than 25

years ago and accepted her first interior design project through a friend's referral, the transition seemed like a natural evolution. "It all happened very organically," Pearson says. "It grew from a love of antiques into designing entire homes." Those Southern roots continue to influence every project. Mississippi instilled an appreciation for heirloom furnishings, while New Orleans introduced her to French antiques, European influences, and architecture rich with character. "New Orleans has some of the most beautiful homes and beautiful antiques," she says. "Living there absolutely influenced me, and growing up in Mississippi with my mother's love of antiques rubbed off on me." Pearson doesn't want clients to recognize her work. She wants them to recognize themselves in it and believes every client deserves a home that reflects their lifestyle. One of her current Houston projects is filled with contemporary architecture, while another renovation leans toward a more traditional, relaxed aesthetic inspired by the homeowners' California roots. The dramatic difference between the two is exactly what excites her about the projects.
"I don't believe great design comes from following trends," Pearson says. "I trust my instincts and focus on creating spaces that are unique to each client. I never want two of my projects to look the same. Every home should have its own personality." Her ability to customize each project goes beyond décor. Pearson recently began designing a private furniture collection exclusively for her clients after years of changing existing pieces to create the perfect proportions. "I've always found myself wanting to tweak existing furniture," she says. "A beautiful piece can still be wrong for a room if it isn't the right proportion." Pearson’s approach has attracted attention well beyond Texas. A recent project in Aspen was recognized by Mountain Living as Home of the Year for seamlessly connecting a historic mountain home with a contemporary addition. “I had the opportunity to work alongside a wonderful architect, Inna Campbell, and Atelier Noir Design,” she said. “We made a great team, and I truly believe the collaboration between architecture and interior design is what made the project so successful.” Despite national recognition and projects across the country, Pearson continues to invest deeply in Houston, where she has spent more than two decades helping families create homes that are distinctly their own. It's a city she loves and says will always be home. lpearsondesign.com

Bold By Design CONNI REED REFLECTS ON TWENTY YEARS OF CREATIVITY, RESILIENCE, AND AUTHENTICITY.
For 20 years, Conni Reed has built Consuela into one of Texas' most recognizable lifestyle brands. Known for bold colors, distinctive patterns, and an unwavering creative vision, the company has earned a loyal following by celebrating individuality instead of trends. At its heart, Consuela is rooted in art, authenticity, and resilience.
Conni Reed, Founder of Consuela
HEN YOU FIRST BEGAN, WHAT WAS THE VISION FOR W CONSUELA? DID YOU DREAM IT WOULD TURN INTO A BELOVED TEXAS BRAND? My vision was to create a global, iconic fashion and lifestyle brand. I anchored that vision in three commitments that continue to guide everything we do today: create art, uplift women, and find joy in the journey. These aren’t brand positioning statements, but decision-making filters that shape every choice we make. WAS THERE EVER PRESSURE TO CHANGE OR TONE DOWN THE BOLD PATTERNS OR COLORS TO FOLLOW INDUSTRY TRENDS? WHAT MADE YOU HOLD FIRM TO YOUR VISION? Our inspiration has never come from trends or forecasts. We begin with art, always. The best way to describe Consuela’s aesthetic is through our Art of the Unmatched™ design philosophy, a visual diary of intentional contradictions that are rugged yet fantastical, bold yet heartfelt, messy yet beautiful. It’s about blending artistry with function to create layered stories of vibrant color, texture, and pattern shaped by curiosity, craft, and soul.

AS THERE EVER A TIME YOU THOUGHT W CONSUELA WASN’T GOING TO MAKE IT, OR YOU THOUGHT ABOUT WALKING AWAY? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING? It’s easy to measure a life by the punctuated moments that are polished, documented, celebrated, and shared. But that isn’t life. I believe that, in between those punctuated moments, there is both hardship and joy, setbacks and successes, and many ordinary moments that, together, can have an extraordinary impact. That belief has kept me going. AS THE COMPANY HAS GROWN, HOW HAVE YOU PROTECTED ITS AUTHENTICITY WHILE SCALING THE BUSINESS? Authenticity is protected by making decisions that honor our commitments and remain true to our purpose. Every new product we create, every new member we welcome to the team, every new physical space we create, every project or initiative we put on the board – it all must feel unmistakably Consuela and have a clear, direct, and traceable connection to our commitments. If it doesn’t, we don’t do it. Scale also means trusting people, and we’ve learned that authenticity comes from people, not perfection. We invite talented individuals to bring their own creativity, perspective, and personality to Consuela. The goal has never been to create a brand where everyone thinks alike, but rather to bring unique voices honoring shared commitments together to create something that feels a lot like magic. HOW HAS YOUR OWN PERSONAL STYLE EVOLVED OVER THE LAST TWO DECADES, AND HAS IT INFLUENCED CONSUELA? I have always been someone who loves comfort; jeans and t-shirts, boots, sneakers, or flip flops are me. I typically mix
Consuela's signature patterns, vibrant colors, and handcrafted details celebrate individuality while blending artistry with everyday function and comfort.

For 20 years, Consuela has inspired women with distinctive accessories rooted in authenticity, craftsmanship, and fearless self-expression.
“Consuela has always been rooted in perception: seeing beauty where others might overlook it, recognizing utility as art, believing joy and hardship can exist together, and embracing the many identities every woman holds.”
styles and layer textures and colors in at least one item, often in an unexpected way. It could be a velvet-and-crystal sport jacket, hotpink sneakers, or an unmatched citrine silk shirt with old brown jeans; there is always something extra girly, bright, glittered, textured, and feminine paired with a comfy, durable foundation, just like our bags. WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THE NEXT DECADE, WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE WITH CONSUELA? Our first decade was really about figuring out how to make our products, from sourcing materials to developing our enduring craftsmanship. The next decade was about building and operationalizing our business. As we embark upon our third decade, our shared focus is realizing my founding vision for Consuela to become a global, iconic lifestyle brand. While there is an incredible amount of work in progress towards this goal, from new product categories to distribution expansion, there is a common thread: create new ways to invite more incredible women into the world of Consuela and Make Today Ridiculously Awesome. consuelastyle.com

THE NEW RULES
Modern Home Style PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES | ARTICLE BY KALI KASPRZYK HOME OF RYAN AND HILLARY BADER
For years, the rule was simple. Pick a palette, pick an aesthetic, and let it carry through every room. The all-white kitchen led to the allwhite living room led to the all-white everything. That era is over. The most interesting homes right now are doing something braver. They’re letting each room hold its own mood. What ties them together isn’t a single look. It’s the materials they keep coming back to: warm brass, sculptural lighting, marble, stained wood, and quiet neutrals holding it all together. We toured one home that gets it exactly right, and pulled out ideas worth borrowing.
4. WARM MODERN The all-white kitchen meets warm wood. Cream cabinetry stays, because the light it gives you is hard to beat. But the island gets a stained wood treatment that grounds the whole space. Brass pendants and hardware add glow. Velvet stools soften the lines. This is the kitchen the next decade is building toward.
5. THE JEWEL BOX Small spaces, big swing.
1. RESORT ENERGY Outdoor rooms designed with the rigor of interiors. This isn’t a backyard. It’s a destination. From the lined-up lounge chairs to the scalloped umbrellas to the green-striped pillows repeating across the deck. The lesson here is to stop treating outdoor furniture as an afterthought. Pick a palette and commit.
2. SCULPTURAL CALM One bold gesture in a quiet room. Everything in this great room is whispering, from the cream walls to the linen sectional to the chandelier’s delicate brass rings. And then a tree, reaching toward the coffered ceiling like it grew there on purpose. When the rest of the room is quiet, the boldest thing you can put in it is something alive.
Antiqued mercury glass, a brass faucet, fluted glass cabinets, golden pulls on crisp white shakers. The idea is to treat your tucked-away corners (bars, powder rooms, butler’s pantries) as the place to take your most theatrical swing. The smaller the room, the bolder you can be.
6. COLOR COCOON Saturated color in rooms meant for rest. Deep sage-spruce walls, ivory bedding, an antiqued mirror catching the shutter light. Proof that calm doesn’t have to mean beige. Color, used right, is the most restful thing you can put in a room. Find your shade and let it hold you.
7. BUILT FOR PLAY Rooms that don’t apologize for being fun.
Dark dining rooms are back, and better than ever.
A game table under a crystal chandelier. A leather club chair next to a telescope. A theater tucked in around the corner. The best entertaining spaces are the ones built for actual use, not just for looking at.
Bold taupe walls, an oval black table, sleek chairs, and an oversized round mirror standing in for art. The bright, airy dining room had its decade. Now bring on the supper club.
Different rooms, different moods, one home. The new rule, it turns out, is that there doesn’t have to be one.
3. MOODY MODERN
