RAISING THE BAR

CONNIE LEFEVRE TURNED A PASSION FOR INTERIOR DESIGN INTO THREE HUGELY SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSES. SHE SHARES INSIGHT INTO WHAT MAKES HER STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD.

Connie LeFevre, an established interior designer with over 40 years of experience, is the only Houston interior designer to own her own studio, furniture and décor showroom, and fabric and wallpaper supply, all in one convenient location.

The Design House showroom offers curated furniture, lighting, art, and accessories, while Fabric House boasts a 9000-square-foot showroom with a vast selection of fabrics and custom options. We sat down with Connie to find out more about her businesses and her dedication to helping customers transform their spaces.

“Our showrooms are fun and exciting experiences for shoppers with edited, carefully selected, and displayed products from a long history of acquiring sources.” – Connie LeFevre

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS. IT ACTUALLY SEEMS LIKE THERE ARE THREE.

As a designer, I opened Design House as a design studio. After searching for more unique products for my clients at various markets, and even when just traveling, I ended up with a warehouse full of treasures. A few designers learned about this private stash and asked me to see what I might have for them to use for their projects. That was when I decided to open a showroom, and the Design House showroom became an additional business. Fast forward about ten years and Fabric House was born, so there are three businesses now.

HOW ARE THE OFFERINGS AT DESIGN HOUSE AND FABRIC HOUSE DIFFERENT?

The Design House showroom offers curated furniture, lighting, art, and accessories available from the floor or by custom order. Design House Studio is an award-winning design group with 40 years of experience and projects from coast to coast. It works on residential and commercial projects, remodeling, and new construction.

Fabric House's expansive showroom offers a wide selection of fabrics, trims, wallpaper, custom bedding, pillows, upholstery, window coverings, drapery hardware, and motorization. Both showrooms and the design studio are in The Houston Design Center.

WHAT MAKES YOUR DESIGN APPROACH OR SHOWROOMS UNIQUE COMPARED TO OTHERS IN THE INDUSTRY?

Our service, attention to detail, and passion for the business are apparent to visitors. We have actually had shoppers tell us they come in periodically for inspiration. Since we have been doing this for so many years, we are highly qualified and experienced in design, sourcing, procurement, logistics, and installation for both retail and the trade. Plus, we offer in-house fabrication and custom capabilities. Our showrooms are fun and exciting experiences for shoppers with edited, carefully selected, and displayed products from a long history of acquiring sources. This provides our clients and customers with solutions for projects that often they have not even imagined. Our showrooms and design studio offer an unparalleled experience that is worth the time and investment.

HOW DOES SOMEONE VISIT OR LEARN MORE ABOUT THESE SHOWROOMS OR DESIGN SERVICES?

We welcome both the trade and public to visit Design House Monday – Friday, 9:00 – 5:00, and Saturday, 10:00 – 5:00. Fabric House is open Monday - Friday, 9:00 –5:00. Customers are invited to come in and learn more about the differences in the quality of furnishings and art, advancements in technology in lighting, fabrics and wallcoverings (even LED wallcovering), artisanal and sustainable selections, and imagine paper made from pineapple and banana waste!  Also, please call our studio if we can help with space planning, lighting planning, FF&E selections, and elevations or if you want someone to review your plans before construction. We look forward to meeting you and helping you achieve the most exciting and functional personal space.

Architect and professor Donna Kacmar considers both the indoor and outdoor environment.

Leading a New Generation

Architect Donna Kacmar’s career has been about getting things just right, and convincing others to do so, too.

As either an architect or teacher – in the architecture schools at Texas A&M (her alma mater), Rice and now the University of Houston, where she’s a tenured full professor – her goal has been to emphasize structures that are efficient and rightsized, using materials that are healthy both for the home’s occupants and for those making and installing the materials.

A native of upstate New York, Donna spent her early years in the Midwest before her family moved to Texas. She opened her Architect Works design studio in Houston years ago, and now her husband, Jonathan Myers, is her work partner, too.

In September, Donna will be inducted into the Houston Design District’s Leaders in Design program.

In her work at UH teaching design studio and a seminar course about dwelling, she was also the founder of the school’s Materials Research Collaborative, where students study various building materials.

“I taught a lot about materials, energy and the body of carbon in building materials …. I tried to really connect the academic institution to the professional world,” Donna said. “There are a lot more materials now that are low VOC (volatile organic compounds). That’s good for our indoor air quality.”

Her own home is smallish, too, initially built at 1,400-square-feet and later expanded by 1,000 square feet with a 3-story addition.

Most of the work that she and her husband do is residential, but they’ve also designed a hair salon, small retail spaces and libraries for the City of Houston, those with architect, Natalye Appel.

“In the design studio, we focus on contextual relationships and how people get to buildings. We try to open our eyes to see things that are there that we weren’t paying attention to and look at how spaces connect,” she said.

With two of her architecture school classmates, Donna Kacmar created a trio of townhouses to serve as the first homes they owned. Photo by Jon Henning.

THE MODERN MARTINI

ALWAYS CLASSIC AND SOPHISTICATED, MARTINIS NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE. HERE’S FIVE MUST-TRIES IN HOUSTON.

The martini has existed in various forms throughout its ice-cold, crisp history. It is about minimalist perfection, with no juices or spices to mask an unbalanced drink. The classic martini is made with gin and vermouth, then garnished with an olive or lemon twist, but several Houston restaurants have put their spin on the conventional cocktail, adding modern-day class and sass to happy hour.

LITTLE’S OYSTER BAR, GOLDEN MARTINI

Guests to the acclaimed seafood haven can pull up a chair at the bar to watch what’s playing on the big screen or enjoy a delightful conversation. Either way, the Golden Martini featuring Aviation Gin, Dolin Blanc Vermouth, Chamomile Licorice Stock, and Grapefruit Bitters—is a must.

AUDEN, NOT YOUR NANA’S MARTINI

When developing the menu and considering kitchen waste, Auden’s Beverage Consultant Alexis Mijares noticed she could easily repurpose parmesan rinds. She infused the rinds in Botanist gin and created the most delicious ParmaGin. Mijares uses Castelvetrano olive brine, which adds a rich and buttery complement to the parmesan’s umami flavors, along with Lustau Manzanilla Sherry and Noilly Prat Dry Vermouth to reinforce the salinity and increase dryness to balance the decadence.

THE ORIGINAL NINFA’S, MEXICAN MARTINI

Both locations, Navigation and Uptown, have a new cocktail making a splash on the main menu: the Mexican Martini. The Mexican Martini blends Penta Cristalino Tequila, freshly squeezed lime and orange juice, olive brine, and orange liqueur. A rim of kosher salt and three Castelvetrano olives hand-stuffed with panela cheeses and pickled jalapeños complete the cocktail.

CAFE PIQUET CUBAN CUISINE, OLD CUBAN

Guests can shake things up with the Old Cuban at Cafe Piquet Cuban Cuisine. If a daiquiri and a mojito had a baby—this traditional Cuban martini would be it. The cocktail features Ron Zacapa, a smooth, aged dark rum, combined with muddled mint, angostura bitters, simple syrup and fresh squeezed lime for a refreshing cocktail reminiscent of a beach vacation. Champagne tops off the Old Cuban for an opulent finish.

PRIVATE CLIENT, DIRTY MARTINI

Private Client, an aesthetic cocktail lounge in Houston’s East Village, offers not one but three martinis on its viral Girl Dinner menu. Offered on Thursdays from 3-10 p.m., Girl Dinner includes Caesar Salad, Parmesan Truffle Fries, and a choice of Dirty Martini, Lemon Drop Martini, or Espresso Martini.

Charleston Charm & Southern Roots

COMBINING A PASSION FOR PEOPLE WITH A LOVE FOR DESIGN TO CREATE PEACEFUL, FUNCTIONAL, BEAUTIFUL SPACES

For Lauren LaRowe and Lyndsay Pilkinton, interior design goes far beyond making things pretty. “We don't take the responsibility of being welcomed into a client's home lightly. Our ultimate goal is always to be humble, truly listen to our clients, and make the experience fun.” Lauren says. “We love to laugh, and we have been told we carry a fun and happy energy. We love our community and love serving others, and of course, we love making spaces beautiful!”

A love for design came young for both Haute Magnolia Interiors owners, “I knew this was what I wanted to do since I was a little girl,” Lauren shares. “I used to design my Barbie Dream House and loved touring old homes in Louisiana, Natchez, and all over the South.”

“I’ve always had a love for patterns and colors, especially with textiles,” Lyndsay reflects. “My grandmother and aunt both have a natural talent for making things look beautiful, and I’d like to think I inherited that same gene. I learned quite a bit from both of them.”

Haute Magnolia Interiors is fully engaged with their clients from project implementation through completion. Whether working on a new build or a renovation, Lauren and Lyndsay collaborate with builders and architects before ground-breaking or demo begins. For clients looking for help with furniture and decor, (whether or not it coincides with a new build or renovation) their full-service decor package brings decorative magic to any space.

No matter the project, they effectively navigate clients through the process. This includes design concepts, and development, as well as help making selections in aspects

such as interior/exterior paint colors, tile, countertops, hardware, plumbing, lighting, and more. Expertly tackling space-planning and floorplans, the experienced duo removes stress and finds the best solutions for their clients.

With a friendship spanning several years, the business partners have a lot in common. “We went to high school together and cheered on the same cheer squad,” Lauren shares. “Before moving to Houston from South Carolina in 2021, we reconnected because Houston is Lyndsay's hometown. We have been inseparable ever since (our dogs have too).”

Lauren, originally from Louisiana, moved her successful design business from Charleston, South Carolina to Houston when her husband retired from the military. Although her indelible design presence will likely always remain in South Carolina, both women are excited and committed to continuing to grow Haute Magnolia Interiors in Houston.

In the beginning, Lyndsay was helping Lauren with design projects; “I soon found out that we were so much better together,” Lauren recalls. “The projects were immediately elevated. We both love it so much–it was natural to partner up.”

“Although I spent several years as a stayat-home mom to my sons, I have a background in business and human resources,” Lyndsay shares. “I think our combined experiences along with our similar style and talent ultimately made us an ideal fit as business partners.”

Family-driven and both proud wives and mothers, “We understand what it takes to raise a family, to be a supportive partner, and have a space to come home to that not only feels beautiful and peaceful but functional too.”

“We both feel that we have so much to offer to the Bayou City in terms of design and helping to create beautiful environments for our clients,” Lauren says. “We think our combination of Charleston charm with southern roots is what sets us apart.”

IF YOU EAT ONE THING

The Prime Beef Tartare at Marmo is a mouthwatering bite of fresh, delicious flavor.

September in Houston is still warm enough to crave light and refreshing dishes, and Italian chophouse Marmo delivers with its Prime Beef Tartare. Chef Eli Jackson takes his time with each aspect of the dish, ensuring that layers of flavor are infused into each bite. marmoitalian.com

THE MEAT

Chef Eli uses meticulously diced pieces of beef tenderloin and locally sourced Wagyu beef. This ensures the dish is not just tender, but adds a depth of flavor that is truly exceptional.

THE EGG YOLK

To cure the egg yolk, chef Eli immerses it in truffle oil in a Cryovac-sealed bag. The bag is then sous vide at 158 degrees for 20 minutes and chilled immediately for an added elevated flair.

THE MIX-INS

Chef Eli folds in capers as a nod to the classic Dijon and red onion for freshness.

THE AIOLI

The dish is topped with white truffle aioli made in-house using the Northern Italian Piemonte region truffles. This fusion of French recipe with Italian and Texan flavors and ingredients adds a unique richness to the dish.

FASHION DESIGNER DANNY NGUYEN USES GLOBAL INSPIRATION FOR HIS CUSTOMIZED CREATIONS.

Houstonian Danny Nguyen grew up helping his parents in their Alief alterations shop. Although he got his start with fabric and sewing, he also dabbled in the art of sculpture before ultimately returning to his sewing machine, this time to try his hand at couture fashion. Nguyen was fascinated by the old ways of couture, a commitment to handcrafted and hand-stitched creations.
