A PAWSITIVELY

PERFECT PARTY

Macy Lima Celebrations & Events shares tips on hosting a memorable pet party.

Skip the tablecloths and fabric seating. “Even well-trained dogs can have an accident when they’re excited,” says Macy Lima of Macy Lima Celebrations & Events. “At Tater and Davis’ party, we used sleek cocktail tables without linens because they are stylish, functional, and easy to clean.” This helps prevent messes and protects furniture and rentals throughout the event.

Accidents happen, and that’s okay. “There were clearly marked potty areas with waste bags and bins nearby,” Lima explains. “It kept the main space clean and made guests feel more comfortable.” A simple setup like this makes cleanup easier and less stressful.

Let everyone enjoy dessert, pups included. “The party hostess, Kelsey Onstott, opted for a dogsafe cake and pup snow cones made with crushed ice and chicken or beef broth,” says Lima. “The humans had their cake, too, so nobody felt left out, especially the birthday dogs.”

1. DITCH THE LINENS
2. DESIGNATE A POTTY SPOT
3. TREATS FOR HUMANS AND DOGS

Opt for party favors pets and owners will use. “We gave each pup a squeaky ball, the birthday dogs Davis and Tater’s favorite, and a stylish waste bag holder with extra bags,” Lima says. “We mixed something fun with something functional.”

Choose a venue where pets can roam. “We knew it was important to set up zones for play, to chill out, and food stations, so dogs had room to explore without feeling overwhelmed,” Lima notes. “Just like us, dogs need space when meeting new friends.”

Add an interactive element guests can take home. “A live caricature artist sketched pups with their owners, and it was a huge hit,” Lima says. “It gave everyone a personal keepsake and made the party even more memorable.” macylimacelebrations.com

5. CHOOSE FAVORS THEY’LL LOVE
6. MAKE IT FUN AND MEMORABLE
4. SPACE TO SNIFF AND PLAY

Design Smart. Build Better. Live Exceptionally.

TOP OF THE CLASS

Sophie Zhou, a rising senior at The Kinkaid School, made history as the first private school student to win the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s School Art Program Grand Champion title. Her oil and acrylic painting, Nurture, sold for a record-breaking $276,000 during the student art auction, topping last year’s record by $1,000.

Inspired by a photo her father took during a family road trip, Zhou spent about 70 to 80 hours over seven months creating the piece. “The lighting in that moment was just so beautiful. I knew I wanted to capture it on canvas,” she said.

Zhou, who began art lessons at age five, said she’s always been drawn to photorealism. “I love focusing on the smallest details. It’s really cool when someone thinks my painting is a photo,” she shared.

While she doesn’t plan to major in art, Zhou said she hopes to keep creating as a hobby while studying political science, public policy, or finance in college. She’s considering Duke and Georgetown.

Although she can’t compete for the top prize again next year due to her Grand Champion title, Zhou still plans to

participate in the contest. “I’ll be entering again during my senior year. I’m thinking of trying mixed media or colored pencil next time, because I’m familiar with those mediums,” she said. Zhou previously placed in the auction as a sophomore. “I didn’t expect to win at all this year. The other 89 pieces were incredible,” she said. “Even five months later, I’m still in shock.”

As the grand champion, Zhou received $38,000 from the sale, with the remainder going toward RodeoHouston scholarships. A print of her winning painting is now framed and displayed with her other artwork near the staircase of her family’s home. “My dad made a little gallery wall for my art. He’s really proud,” Zhou said.

This year’s auction featured 90 student works and raised $476,000 for scholarships— another record for the Rodeo’s long-standing art program.

Spotlight On The HLSR School Art Program

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s School Art Program, now in its 50-plus-year run, engages enthusiastic young artists from Pre-K through grade 12 across roughly 130 school districts, including public, private, and parochial schools. Beginning with district-level competitions each January, work is judged across elementary, junior high, and high school categories, and top submissions advance to be exhibited during RodeoHouston. Selected students may also enter the Quick Draw or graphic design challenge. Award winners can earn scholarships, travel-based workshops at Houston’s prestigious Glassell School of Art, or credit-earning experiences at the Western Art Academy in Kerrville. The top pieces move on to the high-profile School Art Auction, supporting education and the arts.

IF YOU EAT ONE THING

Barbacana opened in April with chef Christian Hernandez of Oxheart, Pax Americana, Indigo, and March at the helm. Located in downtown Houston near Buffalo Bayou, the restaurant offers a la carte dishes and a chef's tasting menu that reflects the city's diverse foodways.

Hernandez shares how the buttered onion tart came to be and why it remains a standout on Barbacana's evolving menu. barbacanatx.com

THE TART

Chef Christian Hernandez starts this dish with a pâte sucrée tart shell, but he gives it a savory edge. "We incorporate a housemade miso to bump up the savoriness," Hernandez says.

THE FILLING

Inside the tart is a careful layering of textures and flavors. "The filling includes a dark caramelized onion purée on the bottom," says Hernandez. "Above that are half caramelized yellow onions cooked in butter." The onions are sourced locally from small farms.

Sitting on top is jumbo lump crab, gently warmed in beurre monté. The idea for the buttered onion came from his time at Oxheart. "It was a very memorable dish while I was working there, and I suppose I always kept it in the back of my head and wanted to use that component in some way," he says.

THE TOPPINGS

Hernandez finishes the tart with Emmental cheese, celery leaf, and celery oil. "We also offer smoked trout roe as a supplemental topping for the tart," he adds.

THE SAUCE

Two sauces bring the tart together. "The foamy sauce on top of the tart is a black pepper sabayon," Hernandez explains. While black pepper, celery, and crab are classic, Hernandez wanted to take a different approach. "I wanted to introduce the black pepper in a more unique form that would complement the dish's textures while contrasting the rich flavor profile. The result is a tart with a smooth and creamy mouthfeel grounded by the buttery flavor and spiked by the piquant pepper."

Color and style

A corkboard covered in fabric swatches hangs on a wall behind Lindsey Herod, the Houston interior designer known for her eclectic style using plenty of color and pattern.

“I like rich saturated colors. And there are always florals unless the client doesn’t like them,” Lindsey said. “Teal, turquoise, plum, blues, pinks and chartreuse, lots of greens and blues and I use them all in the same room. I love a lot of bold color.”

Lindsey recently celebrated the 10-year anniversary of her Houston-based firm, Lindsey Herod Interiors, which she founded after working for several years in the New York office of the celebrated designer, Celerie Kemble. In August, Lindsey will be honored as a Leader In Design by the Houston Design District.

“Celerie is a big personality and so is her mother, so the color, sense of place and personality – all of that came from my experience with her. They operate on a whole other level of design, and I learned a ton more than I could have gotten from any degree,” said Lindsey who earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Texas A&M then earned a master’s at the Pratt Institute in New York.

She met her husband, Clint Herod, at Texas A&M, and while she was working for Celerie Kemble in New York, Clint, a live sports producer, worked for ESPN in Connecticut. He now works for Space City Home Network, handling Rockets and Astros games. The couple has three children.

A couple of home products Lindsey loves right now are cordless, re-chargeable lamps that can be used all over the house in places where electrical outlets are nonexistent or hard to get to, plus performance rugs that come in all styles. She recently put a performance sisal rug in her own living room.
