Pickleball 101

A BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO AMERICA'S FASTEST GROWING SPORT

If you’re looking for a fun and challenging new sport to play, look no further than pickleball. This fast-paced game is a cross between tennis, badminton, and ping pong, and it’s quickly becoming one of the most popular sports in America.

Pickleball was invented in 1965 by Joel Pritchard, a congressman from Washington State, and his friend Bill Bell. They created the game as a way to keep their families entertained during a weekend gathering. The game quickly caught on, and in the years since its invention, it has grown into a sport played by millions of people worldwide.

The game is played on a court about half the size of a tennis court, with a 36-inch high net in the center and 34 inches at the sidelines. Players use a

HOW TO | SPORTS +
RECREATION
16

lightweight paddle to hit a plastic ball with holes back and forth over the net, staying out of the “kitchen.”

The “kitchen” in pickleball, also known as the non-volley zone, is a rectangular area on each side of the net that extends 7 feet back from the net. Players cannot hit the ball while standing inside this zone until after it bounces.

Pickleball is easy to learn but challenging to master, making it a popular sport for all ages and abilities. The game is played in singles and doubles formats, making it ideal for individuals or groups. It is also a low-impact sport, making it perfect for older players or those with physical limitations.

The sport has gained competitiveness over the years, with tournaments held worldwide. The USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) is the governing body of the sport in the United States, providing resources for players, including instructional videos and equipment recommendations. They have also established rules and regulations for both recreational and competitive play.

If you’re interested in trying pickleball, you can easily find a local club or facility that offers the sport. Many community centers, YMCAs, and parks have pickleball courts available for public use. You can also purchase equipment online or at sporting goods stores.

TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR PLAY

Agility

Good footwork enables quick movement around the court to reach difficult shots and make fast returns. Practicing drills focusing on agility, such as moving quickly between ladder rungs or cones, helps improve agility and maintain balance and control in this fast-paced game.

Serving

A good serve can set the tone for the entire game, putting your opponent on the defensive and allowing you to take control of the point. To improve your serving skills, practice different speeds and angles to

keep your opponent guessing. Mix up your serves by using spin or changing the ball’s placement.

Dinking

Dinking is a soft, controlled shot that keeps the ball low, forcing your opponent to hit high. This shot can give you the advantage in the point, allowing you to take control of the net and put pressure on your opponent. Practice dinking by using a light touch with your paddle and keeping your wrist loose and relaxed. Aim for the kitchen line or the corners of the court to keep your opponent guessing. With practice, you can become a master of the dink shot and take your pickleball game to the next level.

A Legacy of Philanthropy and Football

How Cal and Hannah McNair balance family, community outreach, and the Texans

The McNair family is a Texas institution known for their unwavering commitment to the city, bringing a new NFL franchise to Houston. With a history of philanthropy and community involvement that spans generations, the McNairs have made a positive impact both on and off the football field.

We had the pleasure of sitting down with the Chair and CEO of the Houston Texans organization, Cal McNair, and his wife, Hannah , who heads the Houston Texans Foundation . The McNairs gave us insight into how they manage an NFL football team, a massive philanthropic organization, and spend time with family,

including their four children, Robert (12), Calhoun (11), Michael (9), and Hunter Grace (4).

COMMITMENT TO FAMILY

We saw firsthand that Cal and Hannah McNair are down-to-earth, kind, compassionate, and strongly committed to family. When asked how they manage their busy schedules along with their four children and massive extended family, it's "family comes first"!

"Family is important to us and makes us who we are," says Hannah. "It's all that I was surrounded by growing up. If we are strong, our kids feel it, and our family is stronger."

Cal and Hannah McNair

Cal and Hannah McNair both come from large families, with solid values instilled from an early age. Cal grew up with one brother and two sisters, while Hannah has a whopping ten sisters and three brothers. Their upbringing has shaped their commitment to keeping family at the forefront of their lives, personally and professionally.

Cal and Hannah's families are not only close-knit but also geographically close. With dozens of relatives living within a five-mile radius, family gatherings are always lively. Even their weekly spaghetti dinners become mini family reunions, with cars lined up and down the street.

The family also gives back together, having a tradition of volunteering at The Mission of Yahweh every Christmas before heading home to open their presents. Cal and Hannah value philanthropy and community

"Family is important to us and makes us who we are," says Hannah. "It's all that I was surrounded by growing up. If we are strong, our kids feel it, and our family is stronger."

outreach, positively impacting the lives of those around them, which they saw lived out in their own parents' lives.

TEXANS FOUNDATION

The McNair's desire to give back to the community stems from Cal's father, Bob McNair, wanting to fill the void after the Oilers left for Tennessee.

"Before the team's inception, there was a hole in the heart of the community. My father was told by many of his friends that the Texans were a horrible investment and that he shouldn't do it, but he said, 'no, this community needs it," says Cal. "He was willing to take a risk to bring something to the community himself."

After establishing the Texans in Houston, the McNairs created the Texans Foundation with the mission of investing in the community's youth. The organization works towards positively impacting the lives of people in the Houston community through various charitable programs and initiatives.

"Our main goal is to be champions for youth in the community because if you invest in the youth, you invest in the future," says Hannah.

The Texans Foundation allows the whole organization, including players, coaches, and the business side, to get involved in giving back to the community. Significant others of the players, coaches, and executives, known as the "Lady Texans," focus on women's initiatives.

Several organizations partner with the Texans Foundation, such as the Houston

Food Bank, Houston Texas YMCA, and Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Houston. Additionally, the team participates in the United Way's annual drive and sponsors the Texas Bowl benefiting the Depelchin Children's Center.

THE 2023 SEASON

As the 2023 season is gearing up, Cal is optimistic about the team's prospects and believes every season is a new chapter in the "Book of Football."

"The first few pages of the season are starting really well. We expect to compete in every game and play hard for the fans," says Cal.

The recent hiring of DeMeco Ryans as the new head coach has garnered a lot of excitement among fans and the organization alike.

"One of the things DeMeco brings is his passion for this organization," said Hannah. "When you bring somebody in that wants to win, and it's a part of them and a part of who they are, you just get a little more edge."

Ryans has a history with the Texans organization, having played for the team from 2006-2011. His wife is also from the Houston area, which adds a personal connection to the team beyond just his talent as a coach.

"I think that also brings more than just his talent," said Hannah. "He was the top candidate out there. We wanted to bring him home."

Overall, the McNairs and the Texans organization are thrilled to have Ryans on board as they work towards success both

on and off the field. His passion for the team and the community perfectly fits the values the McNair family holds dearly.

Cal strongly emphasizes building a team of players with exceptional character and a deep passion for the game. Cal's dedication to building a team of driven players is evident in his leadership of the Texans organization.

"I'm looking for high-character guys that will work hard both on and off the field," says Cal. "Guys with a real love of the game."

With their dedication to giving back to the community and their passion for the game, the McNairs are excited about the upcoming season and look forward to continuing to make a positive impact both on and off the field.

PLAN A STAYCATION

You don’t need to go very far to have a great time with Dad! Explore a new neck of your own woods with a family staycation. You can go out on the town, stay at a fancy hotel and maybe even enjoy some room service!

GO BIRD WATCHING

Lay out a blanket in your backyard and grab your binoculars for a peaceful, naturefilled day. Make a list of how many different kinds of birds you see and guess if you can identify them.

SPOIL HIM WITH BREAKFAST IN BED

Breakfast in bed isn’t just for Mother’s Day. Dads can enjoy it too! Whip up some of his favorite brunch treats and start Father’s Day off the right way.

06 09

HAVE A WINE AND PAINT NIGHT

Sign up for an artistic experience at a local wine and paint shop so Dad can let his creative side show and you can have a custom piece of art for years to come.

TACKLE A TASK TOGETHER

Is Dad a hands-on guy? Why not spend the day constructing a tree house or painting a birdhouse? Or better yet, help him organize the garage or start a garage redesign.

07 10

DO A FITNESS CLASS TOGETHER

Consider signing him up for a fitness class together. Whether he likes cycling, boxing or HIIT, encourage him to be adventurous and try something new.

08

COOK SOMETHING ADVENTUROUS

If some of Dad’s role models include Gordon Ramsay and Bobby Flay, consider thinking outside the box and create a meal with something you wouldn’t usually go for like bison burgers or grilled octopus tentacles. Tackling a complex recipe may seem challenging but the memories and the meal will be worth it.

11

HAVE AN OUTDOOR FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT

If one of Dad’s favorite pastimes is binging the Star Wars saga over and over again, how about setting up a family movie night from your own backyard? Hang a white bed sheet and project a movie onto the screen via a projector. FAMILY CARE | LIFE + CULTURE 46

There’s no greater way to get to a Dad’s heart than the word “barbecue”. Grab extravagant meats like a rack of ribs or wagyu beef burgers and go to town.

CONSTRUCT SOMETHING OUT OF LEGOS

Harken back to Dad’s childhood with a specialty kit of legos. Embark on a family project of helping Dad build models of favorite movie props like the Death Star or Hogwarts castle.

GO AXE-THROWING

Axe-throwing venues are still going strong across the country. Make an evening of it and practice your throwing skills!

Everyone loves pizza. Make or buy some premade pizza dough and put different toppings in bowls and have Dad and the kids decorate it!

HAVE FONDUE FOR DINNER

16 18 19

ENCOURAGE DAD TO GO ON A GUY’S WEEKEND

Whether Dad enjoys golfing, fishing or hiking, encourage him to get away with the guys for a weekend.

17

MAKE A TIME CAPSULE

Dig a hole in your backyard and have Dad help the kids gather items around the house (like a current newspaper or flyers) and put them in a waterproof bag.

GO CAMPING

Whether you choose to go old-school tent camping at a local (or far-off) park or do it by renting an RV, camping always brings the family tons of quality time and reminds Dad of his fire-building skills.

Wells Fargo Advisors, Chad Nichols, Financial Advisor, Shares How to Achieve Greater Financial Success with the Help of a Professional

Financially preparing for the future helps provide individuals with a sense of security and stability, allowing them to achieve their long-term goals and live a comfortable lifestyle in retirement.

Unfortunately, many people go through their younger years not planning for their future. They may struggle with a lack of financial literacy or believe they have plenty of time to save in the future.

As people get older, they do realize the importance of saving and investing, but they often need help knowing where to start. They may make mistakes such as jumping on the latest trend or missing out on opportunities by hesitating too long.

A financial advisor can help you create an investment plan that aligns with your goals and risk tolerance. We spoke with Chad Nichols, a financial advisor with Wells Fargo Advisors, to get his insights on the current market and how to make the most of investing.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE CURRENT STATE OF THE MARKET?

The markets have been very volatile these days, with changes in economic conditions, geopolitical events, supply and demand fluctuations, and interest rates. During times like this, the market can be very uncertain.

DURING TIMES OF UNCERTAINTY, IS IT STILL A GOOD IDEA TO INVEST?

Yes, but investors should carefully evaluate their investment decisions based on their own risk tolerance and financial goals. It is essential to consult with a financial professional or do your research before making any investment decisions.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR CURRENT INVESTORS?

Don’t let circumstances and market volatility influence whether or not you invest. Historically, investors that are consistent and disciplined in their investment strategies do well. I believe there could be potential advantages available by diversifying in the current market.
