September is the fashion and style issue in the magazine world, and we are thrilled to participate in the trend. Styles are ever-changing, and the fashion world continuously brings us entirely new concepts, but they always include a little something from decades past. As my grandmother used to say, "if you hold on to something long enough, it will eventually come back in style." Fashion choices can reveal a little bit of our personality, so it is a great way to express ourselves. With the changing seasons comes the time for a style refresh, and we have you covered with the latest fall styles for both men and women. Matt Harpalani of Imparali Custom Tailors shares what's on trend in men's fashions, while the owners of Cotton Club Collection share their picks for the ladies.. We also spoke to the founder of Runway Houston , Omar Marcos, about Houston's upcoming runway show you don't want to miss!
Dress Successfor
So bring on fall in your best style, and we will see you around town.
Great style is not only what you wear but how you feel. For many of us ladies, feeling confident includes wearing a touch of makeup and a great pair of shoes. In this issue, we catch up with makeup expert Shawntel Webster, owner of Beauty Topix , who tells us which makeup trends to try this fall and which ones to avoid. We also chat with Steffie Tomson, the cre ator of Getaway Sticks , my new favorite pair of shoes!

WHAT IS RUNWAY HOUSTON?
ARTICLE BY RIVER OAKS LIFESTYLE STAFF PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHARLES LINN AND JESSE GREENE
Fashion doesn't just change from season to sea son; it varies from zip code to zip code. We live in Houston, the most diverse city in the US. On any given day, you can find people wearing killer
The influx of designers from around the country that started presenting collections and the celeb rity that came with it made me realize the impact the production had on the community. Now I see it as a responsibility (although fun) that offers opportunities to multiple people across various areas of interest.
HOW DO YOU FIND NEW DESIGNERS FOR THIS EVENT?
I think it is essential to keep your finger on the pulse of the industry and what is current in trends and style. I often look to social media to see what the kids and influencers wear. I usually pull designers from "Project Runway" and hopefully some from "Making the Cut" soon, but nothing beats the homegrown talent we have here in our fantastic city.
HOUSTONRUNWAY
WHY IS RUNWAY HOUSTON IMPORTANT TO YOU AND THE COMMUNITY?
WHAT LED YOU TO BEGIN RUNWAY HOUSTON?
RH is the largest fashion show in Texas. It is a production that does not target any specific demographic but attempts to present an expe rience that can be taken in by all. Although the fashion show aspect could be considered the main attraction, RH platforms presentations of all types and mediums beyond fashion such as sonic, art, lighting, gastro, mixology, etc.
I used to be a photographer shooting for var ious media outlets in the Houston social scene. After seeing what other productions were doing, I decided that my 31st birthday would be a fash ion-themed party that would become the first RH. Initially, RH was something fun that I did once a year. After the 3rd one, it took on a life of its own and became biannual.
HOW HAS THE HOUSTON FASHION SCENE EVOLVED SINCE RUNWAY HOUSTON'S INCEPTION?
TELL ME ABOUT RUNWAY HOUSTON'S PHILANTHROPY. The first RH was a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, and ever since, we have found various nonprofits and causes to help. Whether it is Hurricane Harvey relief, offering internships to students, collecting toys during the holidays, or making donations to no-kill animal shelters, we believe that giving back should be a part of our efforts to make an impact in the community.
first streetwear collection on our runway last season. While the designers for Fall 2022 have not been revealed yet, I am very excited to unveil a specific designer I have had my eye on for a while.
styles at River Oaks District, Post Houston, China Town, Montrose, and even on the trails at Memorial Park. Social media is now a significant factor in everyone's lives; it gives everyone an outlet to express their style and, in turn, be influenced by others' styles. WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE FASHION WORLD? I think the next direction for style in fashion will push toward NFTs and the Metaverse, and we are already at work to be at the forefront of that soon here in Houston, with RH leading the way. WHEN IS THE NEXT RUNWAY HOUSTON EVENT? Our upcoming event is on October 19th & 20th at the Post Houston. The event itself is from 6-9 pm with a runway show usually starting around 7:30 pm. KEEP IT
After marrying and having children, Matt decided to open a second store in Houston to be closer to family, and his father even came out of retirement to help him run it. When the pandemic began in early 2020, Matt made Houston his permanent home but still regularly visits his New York store on 5th avenue.
Gone are the days of wearing a plaid shirt with a striped suit. “You don’t ever want to wear pinstriped suits, period,” Matt says, “but especially not with a patterned shirt because it gets too sloppy.”
Invest in a dark navy suit, because you can wear it for almost any occasion. These suits are great for business meetings and interviews, but you can also wear the jacket as a sports coat. Brown or black shoes are both appropriate.
TOSS IT
It would be best if you stopped wear ing trousers with pleats or cuffs. These are unflattering and have already been out of fashion for a while. Stick to the flat-fronted trouser.

After college, he moved to New York City, where custom suits are a staple in everyday business wear. Upon his arrival, he accepted a brief internship to learn about the New City fashion scene, and a year later, he opened his first store in 2006, Imparali Custom Tailors.

Matt is no stranger to the men’s fashion world. Growing up in Houston, Matt worked at the family business, Bob’s Custom Tailors, alongside his father, a tailor since 1967. As he got older, Matt decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and run the family business.
Stick to basic colors with nothing too flashy or too busy, especially for office wear. “You want to keep everything low-key and invest in classic pieces,” says Matt.
A black tuxedo with a shawl lapel will always be a timeless look for multiple generations and appropriate for any formal occasion. Plus, it looks great; think of James Bond in Casino Royale.
This fall, Matt Harpalani of Imparali Custom Tailors encourages men to keep it simple.
“Too many men try to mix many colors and patterns, making the outfit look too busy”, Matt says. It is all about a clean, polished look, not only for this season, but for the foreseeable future.
“I think dressing well shows respect,” says Matt, “not only for others, but it shows that you respect yourself for looking your best.” Below, Matt shares his tips on staying on trend and looking your best.
The latest trend is athletic leisurewear, with stretch materials like lycra and span dex. This has even become appropriate attire in some casual business settings. Baggy clothes are a thing of the past. “Looser clothing makes you look heavier these days.”, says Matt. “Suits, pants, and shirts must be more fitted and streamlined.”

OPEN HOUSE | STYLE + BEAUTY Shoe Science ARTICLE BY AMANDA THOMAS PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF STEFFIE TOMSON HOUSTON NEUROSCIENTIST BRINGS FASHION AND FUNCTIONALITY TO FOOTWEAR
Since Steffie Tomson was a young girl, she’s always been interested in science. This curiosity led the 38-year-old Houston native to a career as a neuro scientist, studying how the brain and nervous system work. It’s also what led her to create her own line of shoes.
A graduate of Rice University, Steffie earned her Ph.D. in neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine . Now she is a busy mom of two girls using her scientific knowledge to create fashionable and functional footwear for women on the go. She was inspired to design her own line of shoes after experiencing first hand the struggles of walking from building to building in heels and then dealing with the pain that often came along with it. She was frustrated

The term “getaway sticks” was first used in the 1920s to describe legs. It eventually morphed into a way to describe women’s legs, so Steffie and her team decided to pick it up as a perfect representa tion of femininity and motion.
that she couldn’t find a shoe that looked stylish and would allow her to walk 10,000 steps a day without getting blisters or sore feet.
Steffie knew there had to be a way to build a shoe that looks and feels good. So, she started researching all things related to shoe construc tion and “Unlessdesign. wechange what the heels are made of, our comfort level will never change,” she says. “So, I set out to design a heel made out of foam from top to bottom.” The result? Getaway Sticks — a line of elegant, versatile heels designed to keep you moving and stylish.
“We started with a foam wedge and then built a beautiful shoe around it,” she says. “We ended up with a shoe that’s thoughtfully designed from start to finish, and I’m proud of what we have done.”
Constructed entirely from athletic foam, the wedge shoes feature a wider toe box for wiggle room, soft suede that doesn’t rub, and an added strap for security. Steffie’s favorite feature is the buckle attachment, which includes a “secret hook.”

She launched Getaway Sticks in May 2021 and started selling them at local markets in Houston.
The shoes come in a variety of colors, and new designs are coming in 2023, with the company expanding its product line to include a ballet flat next year.
“If a woman picked up our shoe and put it on, there was a 95% likeli hood that they would buy it,” she says.

“You can buckle the ankle strap to get it to whatever length you need,” she says. “But then, once it’s buckled, you slip it into a hook, and you’re done. This is a mechanism used in ballroom dancing and theater shoes for fast costume changes.”
Getaway Sticks are currently available for purchase online. The company offers free shipping and returns to make it easy for new cus tomers to get started with its product line.
“If you buy one shoe, you will love it, and you’ll come back and buy it in five other colors because we have made a shoe that is comfortable and designed with women in mind,” she says.
Steffie also limited the height of the shoe to two inches for joint health and stability.

FOR HOUSTON CHAMPAGNE HOUSE OWNER, LESS IS MORE
LOCALLY SOURCED | FOOD + BEVERAGE FINE WINE FITNESSAND PRENDICOTTOFCOURTESYPHOTOGRAPHY|THOMASAMANDABYARTICLE
Houston Champagne house owner Matthew Massey — who is also a health and fitness enthusiast — is on a mission to show people that less can indeed be more. Matthew’s com pany, Champagne Madame Zéro, recently debuted its ultra-low sugar wine (less than 0.5 grams per glass, to be exact). And it’s quickly becoming a favorite among wine lovers. It’s won the 2022 Sommelier’s Choice Award and a Silver Medal at the Rodeo Houston 2022 Wine Competition.
We’ve all heard the saying: “Less is more.” While it may sound like a simple concept, it’s often difficult to put into practice, espe cially when it comes to wine.

A friendlier choice for people following a keto or low-carb diet and those living with diabetes who want to enjoy a glass of wine guilt-free. For those who want to know the calorie count and nutrition information for Madame Zéro, it’s printed right on the label. Care was also taken in creating the logo, bottle and packaging. The imagery includes a purple slash, highlighting the wine’s nonconformist style, and the lace on the packaging is inspired by the bubbles in Champagne. And each bottle has a “Modern Madame” cap encompassing the wire and cage.
To learn more about Champagne Madame Zéro, visit madamezero.com.
ZÉROMADAME
Matthew partnered with a winemaker in the Premier Cru village of Vertus and used only the highest quality Chardonnay grapes, so there is no need to add a lot of sugar.
While exploring many of the 319 villages in the region, he came to understand Champagne as a wine of place as opposed to style. This inspired him to look into the composition of wine. He found that many Champagne houses add moderate to large amounts of sugar to achieve bal ance and cover up imperfections. So he set out to create a Champagne with minimal sugar. How did he do it?
Madame Zéro is available at several of Houston’s top restaurants, including Brasserie 19, Da Marco, MAD and Mastro’s. It’s also available at Central Market and Spec’s at select locations.
41| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/RIVEROAKSSEPTEMBER 2022
Matthew’s journey to create Madame Zéro began while he was a teenager working as a server at an Italian restaurant in Galveston, where he learned about the beauty of wine. This began his lifelong fascination with wine and the regions it comes from.
The result?
Independently distributed, Madame Zéro can be shipped to 44 states, making it available to Houston restaurants and for local and regional events or tastings.
As Matthew got older, he traveled to many of the world’s top wine regions. A trip to Champagne, France, sparked his interest in making wine.

As Shawntel got older, she loved the peaceful routine of putting on makeup before work. Before long, friends and col leagues would also approach her to do their makeup. After receiving formal training, she went into cosmetics full-time, working her way up the ladder at Urban Decay and Mac. A few years later, she started her own busi ness, Beauty Topix. She built a glamorous trav eling makeup studio she could take anywhere, including weddings and formal events. She also caters to busy professionals and moms so they can skip the traffic and the babysitter.
When asked why makeup is essential to her morning routine, Shawntel says it is all about"Whenconfidence.youfeel more confident in your appearance, you show that confidence to the world," she says. We asked Shawntel for her advice on what beauty trends are hot this season and what looks have got to go.
Shawntel Webster, the owner of Beauty Topix, definitely knows how to look her best. As a makeup artist with over 19 years of experience, she makes it her business to keep up with the latest styles and trends in the cosmetics world. Inspired by watching her mother's makeup routine as a young child, she became attracted to the creativity and beauty that cosmetics could create.

"She always had a flawless face with pops of color," Shawntel says, "I've always strived to have my skin and makeup look like hers."

If you have a naturally thick, bushy eyebrow, it’s beautiful and you should keep it as is, but don’t try to create it if you don’t have it. You want to go with a natural groomed brow. Use a brow gel with a fibrous wand for best results, and those with thinner brows should fill in the sparse areas with a brow pencil using hairlike strokes.
The main focus this season is flawless-looking skin. You want to give your makeup the best possible base by creat ing a smooth canvas. Make sure to moisturize daily and exfoliate with a gentle salt or sugar scrub twice a week. It also helps to sleep on a silk pillowcase. Those with dry skin and large pores need to use a buffer brush to help press the foundation into the skin for a smoother finish. For your eyes, apply a soft powder through the crease, smudging on the eye’s outer part. Complete the look with a glossy nude lip.

Red Lips Groomed Eyebrows
BOLD RED LIPS
Make your lips the sole focus for a more dramatic look while adding just a little something to the eyes. You want to line the lip with a nude pencil and shade it with a darker red pencil before applying the red lipstick. Red lips must be shaped to perfection. Super glossy lips are also a big trend this season.

BLUE EYESHADOW Yes, it's back! After a solid run in the 1980s, blue eye shadow took a backseat to warmer tones for several decades. This year the color was one of the biggest trends at New York Fashion Week and is being worn by celebrities and influencers. Go bold for a night out, or wear a lighter shade for your everyday routine.
Don’t try to color in your thin eyebrows with a sten cil or thick pencil. It can look blocky and unnatural.

From Cleopatra to Marilyn Monroe, eyeliner has been a staple in the makeup world for centuries. The liner makes the eyes appear broader and more defined. The trick is proper application as you don’t want your eyes to appear smaller by mistake.
