February is here, and although football season is officially over, I'm excited for what this month has to offer. We get another month of cooler temperatures, and I always look forward to the Rodeo Cook-Off at the end of the month. This month we also celebrate love during Valentine's Day. This month's issue is our Local Love issue. I'm so grateful that the Lord brought my wife, Christa, to Houston back in 2008. We met at The Grove in downtown Houston, and after proposing a year and half later at the exact place we met, we married in 2010. Love is a great adventure and I'm very grateful for her and my family. I am very excited to feature Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top in this month's issue. I was introduced to Billy and "That Little Ol' Band from Texas" by my mother while I was in elementary school. She had been a fan of his since the mid 60's when her and her friends would see him play as a member of The Moving Sidewalks at an old club on South Post Oak called Catacombs. Billy made it fashionable to sit courtside at Houston Rockets games in the 80's. He is a fellow Houstonian and I'm proud to showcase him in this issue.

FEBRUARY IS AMERICAN HEART MONTH

HEART FAILURE: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW NOW Over 6 million American adults suffer from heart failure, and that number is expected to grow to 8 million by 2030. What is heart failure? What causes it? How can it be managed? And is there a linkage between COVID-19 and heart failure? Cardiovascular disease specialist Marwan Jumean, MD, answers these and other frequently asked questions about heart failure. Dr. Jumean is an associate professor at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston and is affiliated with Memorial Hermann Health System. He sees patients at the Center for Advanced Heart Failure at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center.

What is heart failure?

Simply put, heart failure is when the heart pump is not pumping enough blood to meet the demands of the body. In many instances, the heart pumping function appears to be normal, but its relaxation is not normal, which prevents the muscle from getting enough blood to pump. When either the pumping function or relaxation function of the heart is affected, the body may not receive enough oxygen.

Is heart failure the same as heart attack?

A heart attack is when one of the three main blood vessels that supply blood to the heart muscle is compromised because of an acute blood vessel blockage. Heart failure is when the heart muscle itself is compromised and weak. This can happen because of blocked arteries to the heart muscle, previous heart attacks or other diseases as well.

What are the symptoms?

A person with heart failure might experience shortness of breath or fatigue with exertion; be unable to lie flat because of shortness of breath; wake up in the middle of sleep with shortness of breath; experience swelling of the feet, ankles or legs; or experience loss of appetite. Many patients with heart failure can spend years with no or minimal symptoms on good medical therapy. However, some will have progression of symptoms and hospitalizations because of fluid buildup in the lungs and legs.

What are the causes?

In about 50 percent of patients, heart failure is caused by previous heart attacks. This is known as ischemic (deprived of blood flow) cardiomyopathy (weak

heart muscle). The other 50 percent, non-ischemic cardiomyopathy, include causes such as heart muscle inflammation, valvular heart disease, arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat), genetic and congenital (present at birth) abnormalities of heart muscle, and toxins such as drugs and alcohol. Sometimes the cause is unknown.

Are some people more susceptible than others?

Patients with previous heart attacks, valvular heart disease and certain cardiac risk factors, like hypertension (high blood pressure), obesity and type 2 diabetes are at a higher risk of developing heart failure. Some people have none of these risk factors but carry certain genes that make them more susceptible to heart failure. Typically, we see this in patients with a strong family history of heart failure, and in patients younger than 50 years of age.

How is it diagnosed?

A physician will take a proper history and perform a physician examination. This is supplemented with an echocardiogram (ultrasound of heart muscle) to see how weak the heart muscle is, to determine if there is a reason for heart failure, such as valvular heart disease. To help establish a proper diagnosis, a patient may undergo further testing with more imaging, such as cardiac MRI, an angiogram, right heart catheterization or special stress testing called cardiopulmonary exercise testing.

How can I prevent getting heart failure?

To lower the chances of developing heart failure, a patient should maintain a balanced lifestyle: Don’t smoke or use illicit drugs. Eat a healthy, balanced diet. Avoid excessive alcohol use. Treat risk factors for heart failure, including diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea. Maintain a normal weight, and lose weight if you are obese. And if you experience symptoms of a heart attack, seek immediate emergency medical attention.

Is there a link between COVID-19 and heart failure?

It is still not clear whether there is a strong correlation between COVID-19 and heart failure. We know that patients with heart failure are at increased risk of COVID-19 complications. We know that there is profound inflammation and

clotting both in arterial and venous systems in patients w it h severe COV ID-19 infection that can lead to ischemia and heart failure. However, it’s not clear yet if COVID-19 infection is a risk for long-term chronic heart failure.

Marwan Jumean, MD Cardiovascular Disease Specialist

What treatments are available for heart failure at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center?

Heart failure progresses from stage A (no heart failure but with risk factors for heart failure, such as hypertension) to stages B and C (changes are happening in heart muscle that can be seen on an echocardiogram with symptoms) to stage D (heart failure has advanced to a stage where conventional medical therapy is failing, and advanced therapies are needed, such as implantation of a heart pump, called a left ventricular assist device, or LVAD, or heart transplantation). At the Center we have the staff, skills and expertise to treat all stages of heart failure with cutting-edge, evidence-based approaches to treatment. Very few centers in Houston offer the full spectrum of available therapies to patients with heart failure, and ours is one of the leading centers in Texas. Our therapies are highly individualized to ensure every patient gets an opportunity to be treated in a collaborative environment with one goal in mind: The wellbeing of the patient.

Are there any new advancements on the horizon at Memorial Hermann to treat heart failure?

Yes, the Center is currently enrolling patients in several clinical trials in heart failure. Given there is no cure for heart failure, this research focuses on medications and technologies to help manage symptoms and prevent the progression of the disease. If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of heart attack, seek immediate emergency medical attention. If you believe you are at risk for—or are experiencing symptoms of—heart failure, talk to your primary care physician or a cardiologist right away. Early diagnosis and treatment can extend and improve your quality of life.

Whisker Bomb Po' Boy

Some Like it Hot BILLY F GIBBONS AND ANTONE’S FAMOUS PO’ BOYS TEAM UP TO CELEBRATE ANTONE’S 60TH ANNIVERSARY WITH A SAUCY SANDWICH - ALL FOR A GOOD CAUSE.

ARTICLE BY GABI DE LA ROSA PHOTOGRAPHY BY BECCA WRIGHT

Born and raised in Houston, Billy F Gibbons is best known as the frontman and lead guitarist for legendary rock band ZZ Top. His prolific career has spanned decades, starting in the 1960s when he formed his first band, The Saints. Although most know Gibbons for his rock status, long beard, and abundant accessories, many don't know that he is also a connoisseur and creator of hot sauce, which spurred his current collaboration with Antone's Famous Po' Boys. "The collaboration between Antone's Famous Po' Boys and Billy F Gibbons was a natural one. They are two iconic brands coming together to celebrate Antone's 60th anniversary and bring attention to Billy F Gibbon's Whisker Bomb Sauce, which just launched in HEB," said Craig Lieberman, CEO of Antone's Famous Po' Boys. The restaurant, which celebrates its milestone anniversary this year, launched the Whisker Bomb Po' Boy in

“Antone’s fame of presenting one of the greatest sandwich collections ever remains unchallenged. January as the last sandwich in its "H-Town Originals" campaign. "H-Town Originals" is a charitable initiative initially launched three years ago to bring awareness to different philanthropic organizations. Local celebrities and chefs were tapped to create sandwiches and choose a beneficiary for a portion of their sandwich's proceeds. The Whisker Bomb Po' Boy's beneficiary is the Clifford Antone Foundation, an organization based in Austin whose mission is to preserve music culture and community by caring for elderly musicians in need and investing in the musical future of at-risk youth. According to Gretchen Barber, a representative for Gibbons, the Clifford Antone Foundation resonates with the legendary rocker not only because of their historical connection but also due to "Clifford Antone's insight into the value of pop culture and his mission to preserve one of the great American art forms - the blues. That value continues and carries expansions of that culture in many directions." The chronicled connection between Antone's and Gibbons goes far beyond just sandwiches. Antone's Nightclub in Austin was opened by the sandwich shop’s founder Jalal Antone's nephew, a University of Texas

student, in the 1970s. It became a fixture on the city's music scene and was known as Austin's "Home of the Blues." Not only was it one of ZZ Top's favorite venues, but many legendary artists also played there, including BB King, Muddy Waters, James Brown, Ray Charles, Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and many more. Time passed, and Antone's Famous Po' Boys and Antone's Nightclub enjoyed their unique status in their communities. However, in 2018, the two entities reconnected when Antone's Famous Po' Boys began distributing in Central Texas, allowing fans to listen to great music and enjoy a delicious sandwich at the same time. The Whisker Bomb Po' Boy consists of buttermilk dipped fried green tomatoes, harissa, chipotle mayo, Billy F Gibbons' Whisker Bomb Sauce, goat cheese, a mix of spices, and arugula served on warm french bread. The sandwich is delicious, but what makes it memorable is the splash of Whisker Bomb Sauce. The sauce was created by Gibbons and singer, songwriter, and guitarist Tim Montana while they were recording together. They discovered a mutual love for spicy food and combined recipes to create a unique and flavorful sauce.

FOUR PERFORMERS WITH HOUSTON AND TEXAS CONNECTIONS SHARE THEIR STORIES ABOUT LIFE IN THE LIMELIGHT. ARTICLE BY MEMORIAL LIFESTYLE STAFF PHOTOGRAPHY BY COURTESY PHOTOS

HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN BROADWAY? What kicked off my love, specifically, was when I saw the national tour of Wicked in 6th grade. I was obsessed with everything about that show, and I knew I had to be on Broadway.

WHAT IS ONE THING MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT PERFORMING ON BROADWAY? A lot of literal blood, sweat, and tears go into making a show run smoothly. Our days include doctor appointments, training sessions, rehearsals, voice lessons, workshop presentations, etc. It is a truly non-stop lifestyle, but I wouldn’t want it any other way.

HOW HAS GROWING UP IN HOUSTON/ TEXAS PLAYED A PART IN YOUR CAREER? I spent most of my childhood two hours north of Houston, in Lufkin, Texas. As soon as I realized my passion was acting and singing, I jumped at any opportunity I could find there. After my freshman year at Lufkin Highschool, I auditioned for the High School for Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA). After receiving the news that I had gotten in, my mom and I moved to Houston, and the rest was history.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN YOUR CAREER? I performed in my first show when I was three years old. My father was the director of drama at The Kinkaid School in Houston, and he needed a young boy to play Astyanax in his production of Trojan Women, so naturally, he chose his son. I then performed in my first professional production, A Christmas Carol, when I was seven years old at the Alley Theatre.

DO YOU HAVE ANY RITUALS THAT YOU DO BEFORE GOING ON STAGE? I try to remind myself of why I perform before I go onstage. I remind myself that it’s the audience’s first time seeing the show, and they deserve as good of a show as the people that saw it before them.

IS THERE ONE ROLE THAT YOU DREAM OF PLAYING ON STAGE? As someone who grew up loving movie musicals, I’ve always wanted to play Don or Cosmo in Singin’ in the Rain. Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor were two of my idols growing up.

HOW HAS GROWING UP IN HOUSTON/TEXAS PLAYED A PART IN YOUR CAREER? I honestly believe Houston is one of the best places to grow up as a young actor. The training I received in Houston was unparalleled. I trained/ performed at TUTS, the Humphrey’s School, The Alley Theatre, Wildfish Theatre, The Tribble School, Masquerade Theatre, HITS, and The Kinkaid School.

Greer Gisy

Currently Dance Supervisor of the “Hamilton Angelica Tour” www.GreerGisy.com

HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN PERFORMING? My parents put me in ballet class when I was three years old; it was a kinder-combo class in which we learned both ballet and tap. I always loved ballet, but getting the chance to experience the performing arts through an entire world of opportunities solidified my transition from ballet to Broadway.

WHAT IS ONE THING MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT PERFORMING ON STAGE? The nerves never go away. After all these years of being on stage, I still get nervous to ‘break a leg’. I used to think being nervous was a weakness, but it’s quite the opposite - it means I still love it. I don’t perform on stage in my current position, but I still get butterflies when I’m watching from the wings.

HOW HAS TEXAS PLAYED A PART IN YOUR CAREER? Texas has been a career hub for me many times - from touring (twice), playing the Zach Theater in Austin, and teaching at TXST University. Southern vibes remind me of where I come from and all the tacos I can eat!

“After all these years of being on stage, I still get nervous to ‘break a leg’. I used to think being nervous was a weakness, but it’s quite the opposite - it means I still love it.” 26

@demolaviolinist Latest album: Classics With Demola,vol 1

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO COMBINE AFROBEATS AND REGGAE WITH THE VIOLIN? As an African, I wanted to make music with the violin that Africans and Caribbeans could connect to. It’s my way of exporting the rhythms of Africa to the world of instrumental music and crossing cultural barriers without words.

ARE PEOPLE SURPRISED WHEN THEY SEE YOU PERFORM LIVE? Yes, they are. I sound better performing live; the interaction is different, the feeling of being in the same space of my performance is pure magic.

YOU ARE VERY MUSICALLY TALENTED - WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO STICK WITH VIOLIN AS YOUR PRIMARY INSTRUMENT? The connection I have with the violin is way different from other instruments. I also decided to take the more difficult route of choosing an instrument that isn’t very popular for mainstream music. There is so much to the violin that I think the world at large hasn’t been exposed to. I want to make the violin a staple in the mainstream industry in every culture and country.

and tax advice in a very approachable, consultative way.” Mallouk has written several books, including 5 Mistakes Every Investor Makes and How to Avoid Them, and has cowritten Unshakeable: Your Financial Freedom Playbook and The Path: Accelerating Your Journey to Financial Freedom with Tony Robbins. “People are generally fearful of investment and feel the market is too low or too high at any given time. When there is a correction (a drop of 10% or more), people generally stay on the sidelines or sell their stocks, fearing the market may collapse and stay lower—there have been over 100 corrections, usually about one per year, and they have all ended with a full recovery. Some of these corrections turn into bear markets, a drop of 20% or more, and all have ended with a full recovery. On the other end of the spectrum, many are worried about investing when the market is at an all time high. This is actually completely normal and happens about once every nineteen days—in other words, all the time! We aren’t surprised when a Hershey’s bar, box of cereal or ticket to Disney World costs more, but somehow are shocked when

the market hits an all time high. It’s normal, and inflation has a lot to do with it.” When looking for a financial advisor, find the right one by asking the right questions. “Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. A minority of financial advisors are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your best interests. There are thousands of advisors that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept

this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time. From there, look for education, credentials and experience with people like you.” As for the future, it’s never looked brighter at Creative Planning. “It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history. In many ways, it feels like we are just at the starting line.” For more information, visit CreativePlanning.com.
