The onset of cooler weather brings much-needed relief from the heat, but my favorite perk of the fall season is comfort food. No matter where you are, comfort food can lift your spirits when you need it most. Food brings us all together, whether we are sharing a meal with loved ones or enjoying a night out on the town.

October is our most delectable issue of the year, filled with some of Houston's favorite dishes and beverages. We had the pleasure of dining at some of the inner loop's finest steakhouses to share what is on their menu.

Also, with the start of Octoberfest celebrations worldwide, we rounded up some of Houston's most hyper-local breweries for you to try this season.

Growing up in a low-income household isn’t easy — especially for families with children who are getting ready to head back to school.

Many kids worry about having the latest fashion trends or fitting in with their peers. But for children from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, these concerns are often overshadowed by more pressing worries, like whether they’ll have enough food to eat or a clean pair of clothes to wear to school.

For Houston attorney Brian White, this scenario hits close to home. Brian grew up in a low-income household and knows firsthand the difficulties these families face.

And having worked with clients at his law firm who are struggling financially, he is in a unique position to understand what many low-income families in Houston are dealing with.

That’s why he wants to help alleviate some of the burdens these families face and remove the barriers that make it hard for kids to focus and do their best work in class.

According to the Children’s Defense Fund, children who don’t have their basic needs met are at a greater risk for poor academic achievement.

“Inflation is at its all-time low right now,” Brian says. “Basic needs like eggs and even milk prices are rising. Most of our clientele are blue-collared workers and low-income families.

Because of the trust they put in us, we are happy to give back.”

To help students get on track for a successful school year, the legal team at Attorney Brian White Personal Injury Lawyers hosted their first Backpack to School charity event to provide supplies to a deserving local elementary school.

The idea to host the event came while Brian was on a work trip. He learned about “The Backpack Project,” a nonprofit organization that has donated over 250,000 backpacks to elementary schools in the past five years.

The nonprofit’s work inspired him to start a similar program in Houston. So, with the help of his team, he organized the Back-pack to School event.

On Aug. 6, the firm donated 500 backpacks containing school supplies, hygienic products and other necessities to Ketelsen Elementary in Houston, which was enough to provide a backpack for every student. Ketelsen Elementary was selected as the recipient of the donations based on its lack of crucial resources, including money for educational trips (the school can only afford to provide one field trip per year).

Not only that, but many students report that their only meal of the day is their school lunch. So, in addition to the backpack donation, the firm hosted a food and clothes drive, raising nearly $2,000 and donating 100% of the proceeds to the school for more field trips, food, uniforms and other supplies.

“I wanted to provide all the necessities these students need in order to have a successful school year,” Brian says. “We were able to provide school supplies by school grade, school uniforms and expense every student’s field trip this year.”

The Backpack to School event featured live music, dancing, games, face painting and Texas BBQ. “Our marketing director, Alexa Nguyen, has been so excited to put this event together with me,” Brian says. “From the very small details to the crowd pleasers, this was so much fun to put together from start to finish. I was telling Alexa that the smiles on those children’s faces were totally worth it!”

With the help of local charitable organizations, Brian and his team were able to make a lasting impact on the lives of these students by providing them with the supplies they needed to succeed. Events like these make Brian grateful for the opportunity to use his law firm as a platform to help those in need.

“We are dedicated to making this event an annual event,” Brian says. “We think next year, instead of picking one school, we may

make it a community backpack giveaway so we can give to many more students and families.”

The firm also actively supports other local charities and nonprofits by donating a large portion of its annual profits to organizations committed to causes ranging from medical research and pet care to arts and literature.

Doris Metropolitan Israeli Steakhouse has garnered national recognition as one of the top restaurants in the city. This steakhouse isn’t your average dining establishment. It boasts a menu that brings Houston an eclectic take on Israeli culture, featuring mouthwatering entrees prepared with fine cuts of meat and an innovative selection of sides.

The unique concept was inspired by owner Dori RebiChia’s butcher shop and restaurant in Israel named Doris Katzavim. Dori fell in love with Costa Rica while on vacation and decided to open his next restaurant there, partnering with Itamar Levy, Shachar Kurgan, and Itai Ben Eli. They then opened a restaurant in New Orleans in 2013, followed by River Oaks in 2017.

Of course, the shining stars of Doris Metropolitan are the steaks, including their 30 oz. bone-in Ribeye, 10o oz.

Japanese Wagyu Striploin, and 8 oz. tenderloin served with bone marrow.

TUNA TARTARE. A mouthwatering starter, Patton’s tuna tartare has a creamy, buttery taste that melts in your mouth. The dish is served with smoked paprika aioli, cucumber, green onion, sesame seeds, shallot, and chives.

BEEF CARPACCIO. Paper-thin slices of raw beef finished with capers and onions, drizzled with olive oil and lemon juice.

Patton’s Steakhouse in The Houston Heights is a hidden gem - literally. The only way to enter this intimate and secluded restaurant is through their secret entrance through the wine cellar of Patton’s sister restaurant, Savoir.

The restaurant was named after the fictional character, Rosland, who represents ladies of all ages and origins. The culinary is led by executive chef Cameron Cain, whose goal was to create a little bit of something for everyone on the menu, rather than focusing specifically on steaks. Rosland’s unique and welcoming ambiance is reflected in the restaurant’s menu, which features a variety of dishes from premium in-house cuts to fresh aquaponic salads.

Rosland’s is open approximately an hour after most nearby restaurants to give those with a later schedule a finer dining option.

’S GRILL & BAR RIBEYE CRESCENT. This highly marbled steak is one of the most favorable cuts available. It is the rarest and most limited cut of beef in the butchering harvest.

Cozy Fall Drinks Spiced apple cider is a favorite fall treat, and it has the added benefit of being an easy drink to make at home. It’s also a great way to help keep your immune system healthy during the colder months, as well as being wonderfully tasty on those chilly fall days when you don’t want anything heavy on your stomach.

S P IC E D A P P L E C ID E R INGREDIENTS • orange • 10 medium apples • 3 cinnamon sticks (or 1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon) • teaspoon ground cloves • 1/3 cup maple syrup (or sweetener of your choice)

DIRECTIONS 1. Peel the orange and cut the apples into large chunks, removing the core. Place fruit into a crockpot on the lowest setting 2. Add cinnamon sticks, cloves, and maple syrup, then add just enough water to cover the fruit entirely 3. Cook on low heat for 6 hours, then mash all of the fruit to release the flavors and cook another hour.

4. Use a mesh strainer to strain all the solids and discard them. Repeat the straining process if necessary.

5. Serve hot and garnish with a cinnamon stick and a thin apple slice.

ME XICAN HOT C H O C O L AT E Hot chocolate has been enjoyed by many cultures around the world, but Mexico lays claim to have created the drink as far back as 500 BC. Whether you’re enjoying it on a cool autumn day or sipping it next to the fireplace on a chilly evening, this homemade hot chocolate is an easy way to warm up your body and satisfy your sweet tooth, free of additives.

INGREDIENTS • 2 cups of whole milk* • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar* • 1/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips* • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon • pinch of sea salt • pinch of cayenne pepper • mini marshmallows (optional)

DIRECTIONS 1. Pour milk and vanilla into a medium saucepan and bring to a slow boil.

2. Add cocoa powder, sugar, and salt, stirring until dissolved 3. Gradually stir in chocolate chips until completely melted.

4. Pour into a mug and top with marshmallows and a dash of cocoa powder. *NOTES Skim or non-dairy milk may be substituted for whole milk.Sugar may be replaced with honey, maple syrup, or an additional sweetener of choice.

Eureka Heights Brew Co. Housed in a facility just above the Eureka Heights fault system lies one of Houston’s most charismatic and wackiest craft brew pubs, the appropriately named Eureka Heights.

Opened in the summer of 2016 by three passionate home brewers, the brewery quickly found success with their flagship beers, Buckle Bunny and Mini-Boss. Now Eureka Heights distributes in restaurants and grocery stores across the greater Houston area.

Their brewery offers 18 beers on tap, from their most popular ales to their more experimental brews. Their LABS (Limited Awesome Beer Series) is wildly popular, allowing the customers to select their favorites, determining which brews become permanent.

Although Eureka Heights offers many complex and high-alcohol brews, what makes them unique is its ability to provide more “sessionable ales.” According to events manager Evan Camp, these lower alcohol beers are the ones that keep people drinking and having a good time longer, which is what Eureka Heights is all about.

In addition to exceptional brewing and creating fun and zany names for their beers, Eureka Heights gives back. They partner with many local organizations, creating specialized brews where a portion of the proceeds go back to the charity. CounterCommon Beerworks & Kitchen Seeing a brew go from grain to glass brings total satisfaction to CounterCommon owners Jaime Robles and Dennis Rhee.

What began as an interest in homebrewing became a brand-new concept: CounterCommon, a family-friendly brewpub in the heart of Bellaire. Drawing on the diversity of the Houston area, the pub perfectly pairs Asian and Latin American cuisine with German-style brews.

After graduating from the world-renowned Master Brewer program at Siebel Institute of Technology in Munich, Germany, Dennis returned to Houston and partnered with Jaime. The duo began planning their concept in 2017 but had to delay opening due to the pandemic. They opened their pub this summer with highly positive reviews.

CounterCommon has a strong inclination for both German styles and low gravity beers, which they brew all in-house. Their two most popular brews are Nein Schadenfreude – a Kölsch-style ale, and Münchin’ Bier, a Munich Helles lager. For Octoberfest this year, they are putting a spin on the traditional German Märzen.

The brewpub offers a distinctive and imaginative menu, with dishes like shrimp ceviche, Korean/Mexican queso (or K-so, as they call it), and wok specialties such as Pad See Ew and Kimchi Fried Rice.

Paradigm Brewing Company Sitting on five acres in Tomball, Texas, this suburban brewery is the perfect place to grab a cold beer and some great food.

Three good friends, Josh Schwaiger, Craig Windholz, and Chris Juergen, opened Paradigm Brewing Company in December 2021 had have had great success ever since.

What makes this brewery unique is the quality food and creative take on craft beers such as Coconut Blonde and Margarita Gose.

One of Paradigm’s most popular brews is Unforgotten Blonde, which not only tastes great, but a portion of the proceeds goes to our service members. Paradigm partnered with Boots and Troops, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping our active duty men and women.

This fall, Paradigm will release its take on Oktoberfest with an event held on Saturday, October 15th. In addition, Paradigm is celebrating its first anniversary Saturday, December 17th. The community is invited to both events to try some craft beer, tasty food, and some newer items added to the Paradigm menu.

Holler Brewing Co. Holler Brewing Co. has become a huge success for providing some of the freshest and highest quality beer in Houston. Located in Sawyer Yards, the brewery was started by John and Kathryn Holler in 2016.

This unique brewing company takes pride in serving “Tank Fresh” beer, which means they serve directly from their brite tanks instead of kegging and canning immediately after production. Though they don’t distribute cans or bottles at this time, you can find Holler beer on draft at local bars and restaurants all over the city.

Their brews include fun and creative names such as Czech My Phone and Don’t Be Tardy To the Party. Their most popular brew is a German Pilsner named Holler Dollar Pils Y’all.

Open seven days a week, Holler Brewing hosts a long list of free events, including Holler Haulers run club, Hollers Gears and Beers Bike Club, Trivia, Yoga, and more. They are hosting their Sixth Anniversary Party on Saturday, November 5th, with live music, VIP tasting, giveaways, and special beer releases.

11 Below Brewing Company Owned by three very close friends, Brandon Moss, Jeff Handojo, and Bryce Baker, 11 Below Brewing is known for having some of the most popular beers in the city.

It all started in 2001 when Brandon got his first at-home brewing kit. Brandon then started to show his friends and family a beer he had created, which included Bryce and Jeff.

Everyone was amazed by how tasty and fresh Brandon’s beer was. Brewing became a regular hobby, and soon after 2012, the trio began planning a business together. By March 2015, the three good friends had sold their first keg.

Two of their most popular beers include Hipster Sauce IPA and Oso Bueno, a spinoff of the first beer Brandon ever produced. They are very excited to release their Octoberfest this fall. The three owners wanted their Octoberfest to be as traditional as possible, using an authentic German approach.

On top of having some of the most popular beers in Houston, they are known for their friendly environment, bringing communities together. “My customers have become family,” says Jeff. “We’ve even had a friend and customer get married at the brewery.”

Located on the northwest side of Downtown Houston, Platypus Brewing serves an excellent variety of craft beers, cocktails, wine, and food.

It all started ten years ago in Australia when Houstonian, Rachna Hanrahan, bought her husband and Australian native, Sean, an at-home brewing kit. Sean then developed a passion for brewing and went on to take a master brewer course.

The couple moved back to Houston in 2015 and collaborated with friend and Australian native Morgan Hughes, who also had a background in home brewing. All three went on to open Platypus Brewing in 2016.

Popular brews include Bobby Dazzler Aussie Blonde Ale and Gold Coast IPA. They just recently started selling seltzers, with a favorite being Passionfruit Coconut. They are also excited to include their Octoberfest on the menu this year which Rachna says “tastes like fall in Houston.”

THE RIGHT AMOUNT STUDIES SHOW THAT ONLY ABOUT 10% OF AMERICANS ARE ACTUALLY GETTING THEIR MINIMUM INTAKE OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES EACH DAY. According to the Center for Disease Control, a minimum of five servings of fruits and vegetables can help reduce your risk of many chronic conditions, including cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Most nutritionists would argue we need even more than that.

Here are some tips to ensure you get the right amount.

1. Educate yourself.

Make sure you know what a serving looks like for your go-to fruits and veggies. We may think we are getting an entire serving, when in reality, it may only be half a serving. Visit myplate. gov for specific serving sizes.

2. Track your eating habits.

Once you know where you are, it is easier to see where you need to go. Start by tracking your serving sizes for a few days, then find out where you could improve.

3. Make a plan.

When you meal plan, it can help incorporate more nutrition. If you find that you need more veggies, add baby carrots to your lunch or an extra side of veggies with dinner.

Praline Pecan Crunch Snack Mix Ingredients • 8 cups brown sugar or cinnamon cereal squares • 1 cup pecan halves • 1/3 cup light corn syrup • 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar • 3 tablespoons butter • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 2 cups white chocolate-covered pretzels • 1 cup salted peanuts • 2 packages of large waffle cones or paper bags Instructions 1. Heat oven to 250°F. Spray a 13 x 9-inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray. Combine cereal and pecans in pan and set aside.

2. In a 4-cup microwaveable bowl, combine corn syrup, brown sugar and butter spread. Microwave on HIGH 1 minute 30 seconds. Stir. Microwave 30 seconds to 1 minute 30 seconds or until boiling.

3. Stir vanilla and baking soda into mixture. Pour over cereal mixture; stir to coat evenly. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 20 minutes. Spread on baking sheet and cool completely; break into pieces. When cooled, add peanuts and pretzels.

Makes about 10-11 cups. Store tightly covered.

Football Apple Hand Pies Apple Hand Pies are a perfect hand-held dessert that tastes like fall Ingredients • 21 ounces apple pie filling, store bought or homemade below (you won’t need it all) • 1 tablespoon cinnamon • 2 package pie crusts (4 crusts), I use Pillsbury • 1 egg • 1 teaspoon milk • Store-bought icing in a tube for laces (optional) Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 425°F. 2. Chop apple pie filling into small pieces and mix with cinnamon. Beat the egg with milk until combined.

3. Roll out the pie dough to ⅛-inch thick and cut the dough into12 football shapes.

4. Add 1 ½ tablespoons apple pie filling to 6 of the footballs.

5. Brush egg wash around the edges and top with remaining 6 football shapes. Use a fork to crimp the edges firmly together.

Make two slits on the top of the pie.

6. Brush with the remaining egg wash and bake for 12 minutes.

7. After cooled, pipe on laces with icing if using.

Notes • Hand pies can be baked in an air fryer for 8-10 minutes at 350°F. • Any flavor of pie filling may be substituted.
