baking cookies, or volunteering at a local charity. Last month we reflected on gratitude, not only for our material possessions, but for our circumstances and the people in our lives. This month, we take that spirit of Thanksgiving and turn it into action, giving back to our community and those in need. We celebrate this time of year by thinking of others and giving not only our money, but our time and effort. “I’m very excited to have Andy Roddick on this month’s cover. He is an exceptional athlete and fierce competitor. I remember watching Andy’s first Grand Slam win at the US OPEN in 2003, and continued success at all the Grand Slams through 2009. It’s exciting that Andy has teamed up with Peyton Manning to create Sweetens Cove Bourbon. I’ve been a fan of the Tennessee Volunteers for many years, and especially their success during Peyton Manning’s run in 1994 through 1997. Peyton’s athletic

ROAD TRIP

Discover a Texas H i l l Cou nt r y G em ARTICLE BY GABI DE LA ROSA

‘TIS THE SEASON FOR A WEEKEND GETAWAY. The temperatures are cooler, and chances are you have a day or two of vacation time left on the calendar before the year ends. While Austin is a big draw for Houstonians and has been in the news lately for its astronomic growth and a slew of new celebrity residents, its smaller neighbor to the west, the City of Bee Cave, offers many of the same amenities with a lot less frantic activity. Located just 30 minutes from the State Capital building, Bee Caves is known for its slower pace, beautiful scenic views, and hill country charm.

Things to Do Explore a unique Texas treasure at Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center, home to the Westcave Grotto. Enjoy a tour leading you down to the one-room cave room flanked by beautiful ferns and a 40-foot waterfall. The hour-long tour of the grotto is toprated and books up weeks in advance, so make your reservations early. Although the cave is one of the most popular attractions, a stroll through Uplands, a 45-acre property, will garner scenic views and plenty of opportunities for bird watching. If hiking, boating, and flying through the air are what you are in the mood for, then book yourself an afternoon at Austin Zipline Adventures. You will experience an adventurous three-hour zipline course adjacent to Lake Travis - it is a one-of-a-kind experience.

THE CITY OF BEE CAVE OFFERS SCENIC VISTAS, DELICIOUS FOOD AND DRINK, AND UNIQUE EXPERIENCES FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY.

Westcave Grotto

No getaway is complete without a spa experience, so plan a morning of pampering at Milk & Honey. The spa, known for its indulgent full-service body treatments and medical aesthetics, has no shortage of ways to treat yourself.

food & drink Arguably one of the best barbeque experiences in this part of Texas (and that is saying a lot) is at Alice’s Restaurant at Treaty Oak Distilling. Enjoy juicy, tender barbecue underneath the shade of a 150-year-old Live Oak tree and savor the flavors of a menu where almost everything is Texas local and made in-house. Visiting the Austin area during a weekend wouldn’t be complete without live music, and Treaty Oak Distilling delivers in spades along with delicious whiskey, gin, and craft cocktails - all made on the property (of course).

The Garden at Ellera offers unique indoor/ outdoor seating with a northeastern flair, and if you visit the Hill Country Galleria for some retail therapy, stop into Cafe Blue. Their weekend brunch, in particular, offers a vast selection of eggs Benedict and fantastic French Toast.

where to stay Finding an excellent home base for a weekend getaway is essential, and Royal Sonesta Bee Cave offers a great location and luxury amenities. A pool with hill country views, in-house restaurant, well-appointed rooms, and fitness facility will be at your fingertips during your stay. Before you get back on the highway, snag yourself some Bee Cave honey and a bottle of Treaty Oak Bourbon Barbecue sauce as mementos of a great weekend away.

MANY GOOD STORIES DO, WITH A GROUP OF FRIENDS ON A GOLF COURSE. Tennis hall-of-famer Andy Roddick and his friend Mark Rivers, an Austin real estate developer, took a trip to Tennessee to play golf at Sweetens Cove golf course. They liked the course so much they rallied more friends and decided to buy the property together. The group of friends turned investors also include Peyton Manning, Nashville musician Drew Holcomb, as well as Texans Tiff's Treats co-founder Leon Chen, Kendra Scott CEO Tom Nolan, and Silicon Labs chairman Nav Sooch. After purchasing the golf course, they discovered that one of the longstanding rituals at Sweetens Cove was to take a celebratory shot of whiskey at the first tee. Paying homage to that ritual, good bourbon, and their friendship, they

Eaves, to blend it. Their first release hit shelves in 2020 (during the pandemic) in Tennessee and Georgia, and at a price point of $200 per bottle, the bourbon sold out in a matter of weeks. Eaves was asked to blend the second batch with their sights firmly set on an expansion into Texas. Eaves, who happened to be living in Hays County (near Austin) at the time, got to work in her mobile laboratory. After tasting hundreds of samples, she finally settled on a blend of 16, 6, and 4-year old bourbons to give a "full palette experience." During her time in Texas, Eaves made friends with local distillers, and they talked about the differences between Texas and Tennessee whiskey. Eaves recently told the Austin American Statesman that those conversations "probably influenced how she went about her blend for Sweetens Cove.

GIVING BACK

Gratefully

ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES

GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. Anna Sarol

“I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent.

28

River Oaks Lifestyle | December 2021

When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.”

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO GIVE AWAY $3OO,OOO This year the company will have nominations for the giveaway open from December 1-15, 2021. To submit a nomination, follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram and fill out the form found in the bio link. The amount given to each recipient will be based on need. The leaders of Lifestyle Publications believe God has blessed them with their company’s continued success, so they in turn wish to be a blessing and encouragement to others as they increase the amount of this year’s giveaway to those in need to $300,000 for the year.

In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy 30
