AprilInvestment For Positive Results

Investment is defined as the act of devoting time, effort or finances to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a worthwhile result. We can invest in our community, relationships, bank accounts and health with the hope that the effort will have a positive impact. Investing in our Memphis community means truly putting down deep roots and finding areas where we can get involved and make a difference. We invest in ourselves through exercise, a nutritious diet and paying attention to our healthcare and mental health needs. Investing in our finances helps create wealth, meet long-term financial goals and secure our retirement.

On a personal level, we can invest in our families and enrich relationships by spending time and connecting with the people in our lives who mean the most to us. This type of investment has the most meaningful impact on us and the people closest to us.

While investing in ourselves, relationships, community and finances can look different from one person to the next, we put the effort into these areas of our lives with a common goal of positive results and improvement.

When I moved to Memphis 25 years ago, I immediately fell in love with the people who call themselves Memphians. I was most impressed by the dedication that so many felt toward improving our city and the subsequent investments they were personally willing to make to achieve that goal.

We all choose what we deem important enough to warrant our investment resources. In our April issue, we explore what it means to invest in your closet through timeless pieces, in your home through art and furnishings and in your body through healthy nutrition. Katherine Gray, a senior vice president at Independent Bank, offers tools to maximize the benefits of personal financial management technology.

This spring, we encourage you to take time to invest in your city, your loved ones, your bank account and yourself – and make sure to take note of the positive results!

HOUSEHOLD ASSETS

REFRESHING WITH ANTIQUES, HEIRLOOMS AND COLLECTIONS

OPEN HOUSE | HOME + DESIGN
14

Designer Anna Lattimore has a gift for honoring treasured antiques by incorporating heirlooms into a fresh, vibrant style. She recently completed a renovation for a couple who inherited a family heirloom – the husband’s childhood home. It was built in the 1920s, and he first moved in during the early 1980s.

HOW SPECIAL TO REIMAGINE A CHILDHOOD HOME. TELL US ABOUT THE PROJECT.

My clients are empty nesters who recently moved from the home where they raised their children. This move was challenging because they were combining furnishings they’d accumulated for decades along with the family heirlooms and art that came with the house – his family history. Furthermore, the house was beautifully decorated, but it was more formal and ornate than they preferred. Our goal was to create a comfortable, inviting home that blends family pieces with new furnishings in the style they love.

I AM PICTURING A LOT OF SORTING AND STORYTELLING. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST STEP?

Plenty of storytelling. And the biggest part of our job is listening. We start with an inventory of the non-negotiables as I call them-and quite often those are the storied pieces my clients treasure and want to include in a refresh. We photograph and measure them and move them around on paper along with the new pieces that fit in their space.

HOW DO YOU ACHIEVE THE BLEND OF DIFFERENT ERAS AND STYLES?

THE VIGNETTE BY THE BOOKCASES IS SO STRIKING.

A blend of antiques and modern furniture is always more interesting to the eye, and the contrast between the two enhances our enjoyment of both. The gold table with the French antique chairs is admittedly an unpredictable pairing, but if we had paired the chairs with an antique table, your eye might not see all the details of the chairs. You may not notice the pretty curved legs in a sea of brown antique furniture.

WITH INHERITED PIECES OR EXISTING FURNITURE, HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT IS WORTH REHABBING?

I first ask – was it well made and comfortable to begin with. And then we consider scale. Because if it already sits comfortably but the frame is too shallow, then scale comes into question.

In the family room, the French tub chairs are the right scale with the table base, for example. If those chairs had taller backs or spindlier legs, they wouldn’t be as visually pleasing with the table.

Older pieces can sit several inches lower than today’s seat heights of 19”. It makes it tricky. When you pull an old club chair next to a brand new sofa, they don’t play well together. We reupholstered their existing sofa and added two new club chairs. We brought new life to his parents’ Bergere chair and cane chair with chipper fabric.

The key to blending successfully is a floorplan drawn to scale with measurements of all their furnishings, including back and seat heights.

HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE COLLECTIONS IN YOUR DESIGN?

A grouping of items makes a larger impact than spreading it in dribs and drabs all over the house. I’ve heard that’s the difference between collections and clutter!  My clients’ mint julep cups look so striking in their armoire that we repurposed as a bar, and they can easily reach them and use them more often. Similarly, their antique books are grouped in the bookcases flanking the fireplace. We interspersed family photos and mementos among them, but the bookcases largely house books.

OPEN HOUSE | HOME + DESIGN
18

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE INHERITED PIECE THAT CLIENTS CAN USE IN A NEW WAY?

Armoires are a favorite heirloom to repurpose if the wall space permits. They make terrific bars, pantries, coat closets and linen closets. In this house, the pine armoire houses his hunting gear, and the armoire in their family room that once held a tv, is now a bar. I have an armoire in my own office that houses fabric samples.

DO YOU HAVE TO BE PERIOD-APPROPRIATE WHEN INCORPORATING VINTAGE OR ANTIQUE ITEMS?

A nod to the home’s architectural style and era will always help the furnishings look more suitable for their surroundings, but too many period-appropriate antiques begin to look like a stage set or museum.

“Generally, kitchens and bathrooms have a lot of hard surfaces and blocks of colors with little opportunity for softness and pattern that wallpaper can achieve.”

Anna’s Wallpaper Wisdom:

1. If you love the pattern on the sample, you will love it even more on your walls. That’s been my experience again and again.

2. I often hear, “What if I grow tired of it?” In my experience, my clients love their wallpaper for years to come. Plus, today’s non-woven papers are much easier to remove than papers of the past, and certainly easier to replace than cabinets, countertops and tile.

3. You can hang art on wallpaper. While you might not want an entire gallery wall on a busy paper, we are fans of well-chosen pieces hung on wallpaper.

OPEN HOUSE | HOME + DESIGN
20

IS THERE A PLACE FOR INHERITED PIECES THAT AREN’T TOO PRECIOUS OR FINE?

We love to paint vintage pieces that don’t have a beautiful patina or pedigree worth preserving. In the guest bedroom, the navy faux bamboo mirror and charming white bedside table were both given a decorative paint finish. We could have bought new, matching bedside tables, but the mismatched tables give the room more charm and personality.

WALLPAPER CAN BE AN INVESTMENT. HOW DID IT IMPACT THIS PROJECT?

Wallpaper is one my favorite tools for introducing color, pattern and energy into a space. In this project, we used two timeless papers from Brunschwig & Fils. In the small powder room, there weren’t a lot of places to inject the happy, bright colors they love. The space had been carved out of an under-stair space, and it was previously painted dark brown. They didn’t want to embark on a full renovation that might gain more space or natural light, so wallpaper was a natural solution to add more color and personality.

My client has always wanted to wallpaper a kitchen, and while this kitchen would’ve been lovely without it, the paper adds polish and personality. Plus, it was in the launching pad for the color scheme of neutrals, brown and soft corals. This also highlighted a McCarty’s pottery collection found in her kitchen.

FOR OUR READERS, WHAT SHOULD THEY LOOK FOR IN VINTAGE OR ANTIQUES? ANY ADVICE ON INVESTING IN HOUSEHOLD ASSETS?

Our favorite vintage pieces to rehab are dining room chairs. We love to source Baker dining room chairs, ideally from the 50s or 60s. They are solid wood and, with some paint and upholstery, they sit so pretty with an antique dining room table.

For younger clients just starting to collect or inherit, we tell them to focus on any antiques or vintage pieces! A gorgeous chest of drawers can be great storage or sit under a TV. A secretary can ground an entry space or make the most of a corner. A bench can act as a nice coffee table or be placed at the end of a bed. Always get the pair of occasional chairs.

Any renovation or refresh that fosters a better connection to yourself and to the important people in your life is a good investment.

I like the structured, tailored aspect of this Kal Rieman set. These pieces are a great “backdrop” for a travel wardrobe. The set is easy to layer with jewelry, fun shoes, scarves or larger jackets. The black provides a versatile base for multiple outfit combinations for a travel day and the rest of your trip.

“Select those items you care about the most - the dress for the party, the suit for the meeting - choose your shoes for the event, then build from there.” Add personality to your travel looks by incorporating fun textures and patterns. Bring your go-to jewelry you know you’ll wear to add depth and interest to a transitional outfit.

“One of my favorite blazers is the Scuba Jacket from Veronica Beard.” Any jacket you love can create a polished look with limited items. Wear your jacket on the plane to elevate your basics and build an evening outfit option with a silky dress underneath instead.

OFFICE (IN OR OUT)

A statement blazer is a year-round workhorse; easy to pair over a sheath dress for an instant upgrade. I love menswear patterns, Italian linens and longer lines. Try it with a fresh white tee, tailored shorts and a kitten heel for dinner dressing.

Runway trends have fueled elevated denim: new fabrications, shapes and tailoring. Moving past the “white skinny”, embrace the wide leg. It has more of a trouser feel and flattering on all. Look for lighter washes in denim like this jacket - a bit dressier than the one you’ve had forever.

Spring of deception, be gone! Florals are hanging in your closet ready to be worn. I love using a “topper” in transition weather. A cotton sleeveless turtleneck fits perfectly over any long sleeve dress. A structured vest or trench work as well. The weather might be dragging but you aren’t!

CHANGE YOUR SHOES CHRISTIAN OWEN

A versatile dress is an essential worker in the wardrobe. This silk, floral print dress was purchased in 2019, and has since gone to an annual line-up of ladies’ luncheons and spring/summer dinner outings both in and out of town. With the stylish sneaker trend here to stay, at least for the foreseeable future, silks can handle the smart-casual role better than they did in presneaker years. Year after year, fresh accessories dictate this colorful dress’s next occasion.

8. SILKS AND SATINS

Again, silks and satins go most anywhere that their paired accessories allow. This 2024 midilength, A-line skirt already has a spring baby shower, a wedding event and a wine-tasting dinner party on its social calendar. Pictured are just a few of the tops that might go along as well, but in such a bright, statement color, it only takes a crisp, white T-shirt to go a pretty long way in this staple clothing item.

9. A TIMELESS COMBINATION

This combination revolves around the trusted black-and-white palette, interpreted here for springtime with a variety of textures and embellishments. Lace booties will go most anywhere the white, patent leather sneakers will not. The beaded white blouse can be worn solo or open over a tank for a dressed down, daytime look. If the blouse is a bit fussy for some settings, a stark white top finished off with a black linen vest gets the wearer anywhere they’re going and ensures a subtle yet high-style entrance.

The Art of Collecting

As consumers, we are constantly being enticed to buy. Whether it’s the jewelry we can’t live without, concert tickets to a show we don’t want to miss or that favorite pair of shoes that’s calling our name. We buy what we love and art should be no different.

If you are new to acquiring original art, you may find it daunting, but it shouldn’t be. It is a special purchase that forces you to dig deep and discover a bit more about yourself. At first, many people shy away from buying original art because of the commitment. It’s a big decision after all, and how do you really know when it’s the “perfect” piece? Since art is subjective, part of the process is learning what style of art is the best fit for you.  Is it colorful and energetic abstracts or soothing landscapes that catch your eye? Maybe you are drawn to local photography or even figurative works. There is no wrong answer, and maybe

Choosing a piece you cannot stop thinking about is always a good place to start.

“ART THAT BRINGS YOU JOY, ADDS PERSONALITY TO YOUR SPACE AND MAKES YOUR HOME ORIGINAL IS AN INVESTMENT IN YOU.”

it’s a mix of several styles that creates your unique collection. The best way to find out your “art personality” is to get out and visit your local galleries. Consider making it a tradition to visit galleries while traveling or buy a piece of art as a gift on special occasions. In the gallery setting you can explore various art styles, mediums and even learn more about the talented artists who create those works.

With the purchase of original art comes other considerations. Often, we have clients who need direction figuring out what size of art they need and its placement in the design of their space.  If you find a piece of art you love, you will always find a spot for it. Ask the gallery if they offer in-home art consultation services to see the piece in your setting.

I’m often asked, “Should I buy art for investment?” There is a place for investment art, but I don’t believe in buying art with the pretense that it will go up in value. There is no guarantee it will and to me, good investment art brings different riches to your life. Art that brings you joy, adds personality to your space and makes your home original is an investment in you. The best art investment should be the feeling you experience gazing into an oil painting that perfectly captures a warm sunset over the prairie, or the texture created by a palette knife on the abstract that seems to pop off the canvas. That is what makes investing in original art priceless.

Katherine Gray discusses ways to maximize the benefits of personal financial management tools.

TECH-DRIVEN BANKING TRANSFORMATION
34
“The future of banking is undeniably digital.”

The fusion of technology and banking has significantly reshaped the landscape of personal financial management. This transformation offers unparalleled convenience, efficiency, and enhanced security, making it easier than ever for consumers to manage finances. Whether you opt for the guidance of a financial professional or prefer to navigate your financial journey independently, there is value in understanding the benefits of digital banking, leveraging financial management tools and maximizing the advantages of these technologies.

Digital banking platforms, accessible via desktop or mobile apps, have revolutionized how we interact with our finances. These platforms provide 24/7 access to financial information, enabling real-time monitoring

of accounts. This instant accessibility allows us to make informed decisions quickly and streamline transactions, bill payments and money transfers, reducing the time and effort traditionally associated with banking.

Moreover, digital banking platforms have evolved to include a variety of tools designed to elevate our financial prowess. For instance, many banks now integrate their own Personal Financial Management (PFM) tools directly within their digital banking platforms. These aggregation tools allow customers to view all their financial accounts, even those held at other institutions, within a single platform. This 360-degree view of your financial situation makes tracking overall financial health and making strategic decisions more manageable.

While PFM tools are not new, those offered by banks come with distinct advantages over third-party software, especially regarding convenience, security and realtime financial insights. The seamless integration within digital banking eliminates the need to log in to separate platforms, and many banks provide these tools at no extra charge, potentially saving customers the cost of third-party software subscriptions. These tools can provide personalized recommendations for optimizing savings, managing spending and paying down debt. They can also offer insights into financial trends, goal-setting functionalities and tools for creating budgets, which can be self-created or auto-generated based on past spending habits.

Credit score management within digital banking platforms has also transformed how consumers monitor their financial health. Easy access to credit scores, detailed credit reports, continuous credit monitoring and a wealth of financial tips and educational resources are available without impacting credit scores. The benefits of having this feature at our fingertips are substantial. Daily access to your credit score keeps you closely connected with your financial standing, allowing you to track improvements or address issues promptly. Real-time credit monitoring alerts offer an immediate heads-up on any changes or potential fraudulent activity. Detailed credit reports provide a closer look at credit history and the factors that impact the score, allowing for personalized strategies to improve credit standing. Additionally, exclusive credit offers tailored to each customer’s profile can lead to opportunities for better interest rates and financial products.

No discussion about banking technology can be complete without discussing the development of advanced security features that safeguard personal and financial information against unauthorized access and fraud. Enhanced login methods, such as biometric and multi-factor authentication (i.e. facial recognition or receiving a secure code by text) offer a highly secure alternative to traditional passwords. Card control features, like the ability to turn your debit card on and off, provide real-time protection against fraud and unauthorized use. Digital bill pay

services offer a secure alternative to writing checks, which can be lost, stolen, or tampered with. Electronic payments are encrypted and transmitted directly to the payee, minimizing the risk of interception. Real-time alerts and notifications help monitor account activity and identify suspicious transactions as soon as they happen.

The future of banking is undeniably digital. The importance of remaining informed, cautious and proactive in using technology to your financial advantage cannot be overstated. Whether you’re looking to enhance your financial management, secure your financial future or simply enjoy the convenience of modern banking, there’s a wealth of resources at your fingertips. By adopting and integrating these tools and strategies into your financial routine, you can take complete control of your economic well-being, navigate the complexities of the financial world with confidence and maintain optimal financial health.

CONSUMER SAFETY TIPS FOR DIGITAL BANKING

Use Strong, Unique Passwords: Create complex passwords and avoid reusing them across different sites. If remembering your passwords is difficult, use a password manager.

Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Whenever possible, enable MFA (MultiFactor Authentication) to gain an added layer of security beyond just a password.

Be Wary of Phishing or Vishing Attempts: Your bank will never request your personal information, account details, login credentials, or one-time passcodes via unsolicited communications.

Monitor Your Accounts: Review your transactions regularly and immediately report any unusual activity.

Keep Your Software Updated: Ensure that your devices’ operating systems and applications are updated with the latest security patches.

Use Secure Networks: Refrain from accessing your bank accounts from public or unsecured Wi-Fi networks.

INDOOR PLANT GUIDE

Investing in indoor plants can not only spruce up your living space, but also bring numerous health and well-being benefits

Bringing the outdoors in with the use of house plants is a great way to add color and dimension to your space. We sat down with Jesse Nelson at Family Tree Nursery, based in Kansas, and discussed the benefits of incorporating plant life into your home.“There are plenty of studies on the health benefits of plants, and the evidence suggests that being around plants and caring for plant life increases overall wellness,” explains Nelson. “Anytime you bring a plant into a home or work environment, it’s going to make you feel better. It is going to beautify the space in a way that art cannot, and they also have the added benefit of  purifying the air.” There are a wide variety of indoor plants that work for any space and light situation that you may have. Regardless if you have a green thumb or a black thumb, there are plant varieties that fit your lifestyle. Here are a few of our favorite indoor plants to incorporate into your home.

SNAKE PLANT:

This plant goes by many names such as Snake Plant and Mother-in-Law’s Tongue and is one of the most popular indoor plants. The Snake Plant is for anyone from a green thumb to a black thumb because anyone can grow it. These hardy plants can adapt to any environment and can live in both high light and low light. Snake Plants are great for countertops and tabletops because they grow tall, not

wide. They are great bedside plants because they help purify the air as they go through photosynthesis at night. They only need to be watered about once a month. These plants can also be outdoor plants and can acclimate during the summer months. Be sure to spray the plants three to five times before bringing them back indoors to get rid of any bugs that could have made the plant their home.

Anthurium has gorgeous, colorful flowers and is the easiest indoor flowering plant to care for. It comes in a variety of colors including red, white, orange and purple. Anthurium likes to be dry, so let it go bone dry before watering. Fertilize every so often, especially when blooming. These plants do not like direct sunlight and can be repotted every three to five years.

HOPE PEPEROMIA:

This cascading plant is gaining popularity due to its succulent-like leaves and also because it is fairly easy to care for. The Hope Peperomia likes medium to bright direct sunlight. It does well as a tabletop plant or a hanging plant. Watering is only needed one time a month regardless of plant size.

“Anytime you bring a plant into a home or work environment, it’s going to make you feel better. It is going to beautify the space in a way that art cannot, and they also have the added benefit of  purifying the air.”

This is a slow-growing variety that is architectural and compact. This plant is a great statement piece and looks great in an entryway or by a chair. There are a lot of varieties and colors of the Dracaena. They are very resilient in low light and are great for an office space with little or no light. They like to stay on the dry side, so they like to be watered when they are about ½ to ¾ of the way dry. When watering, give it a good soak. Protip: A moisture meter can be purchased and used to determine how dry your plant is to help determine when it is time to water again.
