February Love Local

February 2023 PUBLISHER

Christian Owen | christian.owen@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Lindsey Tonkin | lindsey.tonkin@citylifestyle.com

February puts the spotlight on love. We set aside a day this month to make those important to us feel loved, celebrated, and thought of. Memphis is a city that makes everyone feel loved. Memphis captures the heart, soul, and mind of those who inhabit it. The people welcome you with open arms and a table full of food. They open their doors, restaurants, and parks to you, willing you to love this place. You feel encouraged to jump into all the city offers - and there’s a lot. I am not a Memphis local. Over the past fifteen years, I’ve lived in Knoxville, Sewanee, Nashville, and now, Memphis. As I’ve made my way across Tennessee, I’ve become more and more thankful to live in the Volunteer State. During my time in Memphis thus far, I have come to love this place wholeheartedly because Memphis is different. What is local to Memphis is notable because the locality of Memphis is authentic and not performative. Whether you enjoy the food, the Grizzlies, or the music, you feel embedded in Memphis. You don’t have to be a local to settle into the city’s treasures. The love for the local scene is tangible, manifesting differently around every corner. While we teeter between the chill of January winter and the excitement of spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. The ones in your home and on your street. In your neighborhood and your community. “Love local” means your local businesses, those in your community - but it also means loving what is near. Those under your own roof included. So grab a coffee at Otherlands and head home for a game night around the fire with the family. Or snag a bottle of wine from Joe’s Wines and Liquor and a to-go charcuterie board from Feast & Graze to indulge on a movie night in. In this issue, we are celebrating the local people, places and things that make Memphis, Memphis. Our hope is that we inspire you to love it just a bit more than you did before. Happy February!

Edmond Rostand’s exquisite 1898 masterpiece offers the sweep of lyrical poetry, mythic romance, modern comedy, and tearful joy in a heartful spectacle as vast as our hero’s…ahem… nose. TSC founder Dan McCleary plays Cyrano, whose depth of love, humor, courage, and vulnerability belies his self-described “grotesque” appearance. Will his secret love, Roxane, recognize his heart before it is too late? Though set in 17th century France, this is the play that inspires a revolution in hearts through all the Ages.

Happy Clients and Well-Curated Homes Behind the Scenes of Elizabeth Malmo’s Successful Interior Design Business

ARTICLE BY JEANNIE TABOR PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH BELL, SÉLAVIE PHOTOGRAPHY

For Elizabeth Malmo, interior designer and owner of home décor store Collected, success is defined pretty simply – “we want our clients to love their homes!” However, the process involved in obtaining that success is anything but simple. “Creating a well-curated room or house takes a lot of time. Hours and hours of prep work and planning go into each space.” Elizabeth detailed her thoughtful design process using a recently completed primary bedroom and bathroom renovation as an example. She started by selecting fabrics and wall coverings. She and her staff then made furniture and lighting selections, mixing new upholstery with antique tables and vintage lamps to give it a collected feel. “We spent hours ensuring each room played well off the next, and the flow felt right.”

Next in her process is schedule time. “We detail every bit of information needed to install all lighting, paint, tile, cabinetry, and plumbing for the contractor. We do countless walk-throughs, dry tile layouts, electrical punch lists and millwork meetings. She even brought in David Lusk, owner of David Lusk Gallery, to help select artwork to complement the design. Asked about her favorite elements of the design process, Elizabeth described herself as a design nerd. “Printed lampshades, passementerie and lacquered anything make me happy. I love all the little details of a well-curated home.” But Elizabeth knows as well as anyone that interior design work is not always easy or glamorous. “My team and I joke that we wear CONTINUED >

a lot of hats. Half of our job is problem-solving. Designing a space, even a small one, requires a lot of thought and planning, and, as we all know, everything does not always go smoothly.” Most recently, Elizabeth was challenged to ensure that a beautiful, sizable chandelier purchased for a client’s hallway would reach its final destination. She and her team measured and measured again to make sure that the fixture would clear the doorway. They mapped out a circuitous route to ensure the light fixture made it to its final home: through a side door on the other side of the house, down a loggia, through the family room, up the back stairs, down a long hall and back to the front of the house. She even asked the builder if it would be possible to remove the newly installed windows if they needed to accommodate the size of the chandelier. The answer was “no,” and fortunately, the piece found its way through the house with the windows intact. Thankfully, all the pre-planning paid off, and the lovely chandelier is hanging in its new home. Elizabeth did not plan to be an interior designer from the start, although her path was somewhat hereditary. Her grandfather, Sam Gully, was an interior designer and someone Elizabeth looked up to, even though he passed away before she could meet him. “To me, he was this magical artistic mind who could play piano by ear, was a master painter and a true creative. My mom always joked that the creative gene skipped a generation, but that is not true. My mom has fabulous taste. I grew up in a beautiful old home with gorgeous antiques, most from my grandfather, and lots of color.” As long as she can remember, Elizabeth has always been interested in the arts. “In high school, I was that girl camped out in the art studio. I was the T-shirt designer for my grade. And, for our senior prank, I made sure that the pancake breakfast set up in the front entrance had a pretty tablescape.” But she initially had her heart set on a different kind of job. She attended college at CONTINUED >

“Printed lampshades, passementerie and lacquered anything make me happy. I love all the little details of a well-curated home.” Washington and Lee, where she double majored in Business Administration and Fine Arts. “My art classes were a nice break from all the business courses, but I viewed them as more of a hobby than a career.” She spent three years pursuing a career in finance. She studied abroad at the London School of Economics and interned for several financial firms each summer. Her career path changed after spending the summer before her senior year in New York. She spent the first half of the summer interning for a hedge fund and the second half taking painting classes at Parsons School of Design, where Sam Gully earned his interior design degree. “I will never forget calling my parents at the end of that summer and telling them I was going to pursue a career in the arts – still not sure what that would entail.” With the help of very supportive parents, Elizabeth decided her senior year in college to apply to the New York School of Interior Design (“NYSID”) to obtain a graduate degree. She attended NYSID and interned for the very talented Miles Redd, eventually taking a job as a project manager for his firm. Elizabeth moved back to Memphis in 2013 and started her design firm. Shortly after returning, she realized the potential to expand into a retail space. “Not only would it be nice to have inventory on hand, but it would also allow me to promote my style and taste.” First opening booths at Palladio and La Maison, Elizabeth loved the community there but eventually outgrew her space and wanted

to consolidate her items. She still shops for clients at both of those design stores. In 2018 Elizabeth teamed up with friends Gracey Smythe and Biggs Powell. Together, they dreamed about opening two stores together in one space side-by-side, allowing clients to shop two very different styles under one storefront. They looked all over Memphis for the perfect location for Collected and Powell Smythe Antiques and felt that there was something uniquely special about Broad Avenue. “We wanted something with charm and history. Broad Avenue Arts District felt like the perfect fit.” They were fortunate enough to find a space that would work for both stores and began construction in 2019. “Broad Avenue has experienced a ton of growth just in the past few years, and the addition of the new apartment building across the street will hopefully drive even more growth.” Successful interior designer and business owner, Elizabeth is also a wife and mother. “I think finding a work/life balance is very important no matter who you are. Find a few hobbies/activities that are just for you. For me, it’s pilates, tennis, needle pointing and reading. Also, surround yourself with supportive friends and family.” Elizabeth credits her successful balance to her supportive husband, who has a career and lots of hobbies, her three adorable children, her supportive parents (who are building a house three doors down from hers) and a wonderful group of friends.

Corsica Connection THE INSPIRED SERIES

“When in Rome…” is the oft-used call to immerse yourself in the customs of the locale; however, for Sarah Bell, the better choice would begin “when in France.” And when in Corsica, France, Sarah feels a true connectedness like nothing else. “From the moment the plane landed, the door opened, and the smell of Corsican herbs emerged, I felt like I had never left,” reminisced Sarah after returning to Corsica this past month following a 10-year absence. Corsica, L’lle de Beaute or Isle of Beauty, is a mountainous Mediterranean island with a delightful mix of stylish coastal towns, dense forests and miles-long beaches. As a photographer, Sarah loves capturing Corsica’s pure and distinct natural beauty. The herbs Sarah smelled upon her arrival were a mix of rosemary, sage, mint and thyme. The scrubland, or Le Maquis, is vast and has rich and concentrated vegetation. Walking in the small village of Corbara, Sarah came upon some arbutus trees with curving trunks and beautiful berries. “As kids, we would pick the arbutus berries from the trees and enjoy CONTINUED >

eating them raw while playing. They look like small strawberries with soft flesh and many small seeds.” On a recent walk with her husband and niece, Sarah stumbled upon an old home with a dog looking out at them from a second-story window. “I wanted to capture the essence of the village and showcase the small traditional houses, which are often in pastel hues from ochre to pale pink. The village was empty because it was just after Christmas; the dog in the window saluted us as we walked by. It felt almost like a person looking right at you. Along one of the many alleys leading to the village’s center, I photographed a small olive tree next to the Church of the Annunciation, which is Baroque style. The only person we saw in the village that day was a post officer on his bike.” When Sarah was young, she lived in the Corsican countryside. “From one window in our home, you could see dramatic mountains, and from the other part of the house, you would see the swaying blue of the sea.” Sarah lived in Corsica until she was 18 and would return each summer after that. It was not until later, after being far away for many years and surrounded by large cities, that she really started to miss it. “Corsica is charming, mesmerizing and inspirational for so many reasons – a wish to slow down, to go on a seaside walk in the morning, to eat seasonal and fresh produce, to cook with mom, the colors in the sky, the colors of the mountains, the shape that the wind gives to the trees, the memories. I feel more connected and humble when I am here. Time seems suspended.”

BETTER A smart new architectural collaboration in Normal Station

Laurynas Petrauskas (also “LP”) and Raymond Sharkus of LP3 Developers have built a new residential development in the historic Normal Station neighborhood, just as they have successfully done near Crosstown and Overton Square. The firm specializes in “turning around neighborhoods on the edge,” says LP. A significant neighborhood anchor point typically draws their attention. In this case, the anchor was the University of Memphis on the northern border of Normal Station, named for the train depot it was at the turn of the century. Over the years, the University has heavily invested in its grounds and surroundings with new facilities, student housing, parking, green spaces, lighting and walkways; however, the neighborhood south of Southern Avenue remained neglected, with student housing and rentals that looked worn by comparison. That is where LP saw an opportunity. LP3’s Normal Station property includes an original Victorian home and almost an acre lot that the partners carved into six unique homesites between 2,300 and 2,500 square feet. With three bedrooms and two and a half baths, each new home offers slightly different amenities like outdoor spaces and

balconies. The gated community integrates seamlessly into the historic neighborhood but brings a unique, contemporary flair reflecting LP’s European background. A native of Lithuania, Petrauskas moved to Memphis as a teenager. Early in his career, he envisioned building contemporary homes in neglected neighborhoods as a means of renewal and improving his new River City home. He calls them “infill” areas where his style breathes fresh air into dated landscapes with modern lines and contemporary finishes. His latest development in the Normal Station neighborhood is a collaboration with the University and architecture firms Archimania and brg3s. “Building in the shadow of the University of Memphis, it made sense to reach out,” says LP. With the help of architect Andrew Parks of Archimania, a University of Memphis graduate and Professor of Practice in the Department of Architecture, LP initiated a collaboration with the Department of Architecture. Students in the second-year undergraduate design studio program under the leadership of Department Chair Michael Hagge did the original design work for the six new homes. CONTINUED >

Parks oversaw the students’ work and encouraged them to draw inspiration from the existing neighborhood of bungalows and cottages using familiar materials like brick and siding. The students also explored design concepts of efficiency, materials, and finishes, which they included in the clean and elegant homes. Hagge says the students glimpsed the development process and the “importance of collaboration.” This collaboration formula is working as one of the new homes has already sold, and two more are under contract. As the Normal Station homes sell, LP has his sights set on a new property on Broad Avenue at Hollywood for development. Meet LP alongside Lester Walton on our new, complementary podcast. Couples counselor Dr. Gary Chapman developed the concept of love languages which reveals how someone prefers to give and receive love. How does your partner, friend or family member interpret affection? Here is a starter to help you become fluent and gift based on how your Valentine feels the most loved.

Art Project Memphis has the perfect happies for your smaller valentines. Head to RSVP Stationers for flair.

RECEIVING GIFTS (SMALL TOKENS, GESTURES, AND THOUGHTFUL PRESENTS) This doesn’t mean grand gestures and throwing money around. It means “I was thinking about you when I saw this.” Or - “It looks just like you.” And “Aren’t these your favorite?” Does your boyfriend often talk about his mother’s cast iron skillet? Germantown Hardware (germantownhardware.com) carries the Tennessee-made, Lodge Cast Iron. They also have the largest collection of independent sodas, including Cheerwine – perfect for your spouse who grew up in North Carolina. Surprise your sweet tooth who talks about his Sicilian grandmother’s cookies. The Ginger’s Bread & Co. (thegingersbread.com) makes Italian cookies and your Valentine’s favorite bread in town. Does your galentine have kids at home? Art Project Memphis (@artprojectmemphis) makes themed playdough jars – perfect for sensory play and a great indoor activity. Pick up some Valentine's flair at RSVP

Stationers (@rsvpstationers) for your friend who is always on theme. They also carry packaged cocktail or mocktail kits that can easily fit into a greeting card.

PHYSICAL TOUCH (AFFIRMATIVE TOUCH, HUGS, KISSES, CUDDLES) A theragun counts as cuddling too, but why not book a body treatment for your Valentine. Midtown Massage and Bodywork (@midtownmassagememphis) has some of the best therapists in town and a variety of services. Try a Table Thai massage with a therapeutic massage plus stretching and joint mobilization.

QUALITY TIME (SPENDING MEANINGFUL TIME AND UNDIVIDED ATTENTION) Grivet Outdoors (@grivetoutdoors) has the mini Solo Stove, perfect for a tabletop and backyard date. Add some goodr sunglasses with a note about a hike or an outing that you have planned. CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / R I V E R C I T Y

The Solo Stove on the go - and some shades - for quality time with Grivet Outdoors.

For last-minute cupids, plan a date. Buy tickets for a comedy show, the symphony, theatre, or a musical act coming to town. You can book a sitter once a month for Saturday brunch for just you and your spouse. A call to your travel agent works as well.

WORDS OF AFFIRMATION (THANK YOU, I LOVE YOU, COMPLIMENTS, WHY YOU MEAN SO MUCH TO ME)

Lee Pruitt Interior Design decorative objects can prompt the perfect Valentine sentiments.

Does a greeting card give you agita? How will you ever fill the white space? We like starting a card with an excerpt of poetry or a movie quote. Or take inspiration from a gift – and use it as a prompt for your sentiments. Visit an antique or design shop like Lee Pruitt Interior Design (@ leepruittinteriordesign). We found darling decorative tape measurers. Start your prose with ways to measure the past year with your Valentine. Or this thinking man sculpture - perfect for decorating a shelf. He looks stumped, but what could he say about your wife if he knew how much she did to support the family. Get the idea? Now your gift has a story to go with your kind words.

ACTS OF SERVICE (HELPFUL ACTIONS) Is your valentine always doing for others and never scoffing at a chore or favor? Make sure you don't mess up the kitchen when bringing breakfast in bed. Enter Brinkley's Good Flippin' Pancakes (brinkleysfoods.com), a family-owned food company based in Memphis. Made with organic ingredients and gluten-free, you simply give a quick toast and they are ready to plate (and wildly good!). Take a chore off your Valentine's to-do list. Surprise them with car detailing, print photos from their iPhone and frame for their office or plant some cool-weather crops in your garden. Chapman’s theory proves the adage that it really is “the thought that counts.” And all of that pairs really well with flowers.
