I am Memphis, a city with heart and soul. I am known for turning struggles into strengths. I admit room for improvement, but never defeat. I know how to smile for the camera, but my Southern charm is not just a façade. I am real. I am not simply a sum of historic highs and lows. No. I am the grit and grind of unbending determination. I’m not polished and smooth, and like every great city, I continue to long for more: more unity, more peace and greater understanding. I have a strong foundation, and instead of tearing down buildings, I celebrate renovation. I mourn loss. I have a sense of humor. I encourage questions, and history has shown that I will persevere. My streets are full of activity and never stand still; instead, we are always moving forward. While I have my share of grand, state-of-the-art structures and modern texture, I am proud of my historic markers and buildings lined with aged, architectural elements that acknowledge where we began. My people are business owners, innovators, homemakers, educators and artists who know and are inspired by the depth of my character. Within the city boundaries and in neighboring towns who share with us the title, Midsouth, it is possible to witness several narratives at once, all of which point to the essence and individuality of our River City community.

Dr. Henning is excellent. He is a caring doctor and is very much in touch with his patients’ worries, concerns and pain... He has a good sense of humor and bedside manner. I highly recommend him, and I don't ever recommend doctors to anyone. Dr. Henning is the exception to the rule. First class all the way.

DR. CAREY FABER CAMPBELL, MD PLASTIC & RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGEON
A FEMALE’S EYE FOR ELEGANT RESULTS AND AN EAR FOR YOUR GOALS. Q: What is your favorite procedure? A: I became a Plastic Surgeon because I love that I can employ creativity every day to help my patients achieve personal goals. I tailor procedures to each patient. I love that I get to work on reconstructing patients to restore function as well as making their cosmetic goals attainable. If I had to pick three favorites, they would be facial surgery, breast surgery and tummy tucks. Q: What surgery has the greatest satisfaction rate? A: All well-planned and executed procedures generally have high satisfaction. However, patients who have breast reductions are always happy with how much better they feel and look. Surgeries that improve quality of life are always enjoyed. Q: Is there anything you would caution patients about plastic surgery? A: Always make sure your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Understand the experience and training your surgeon has and what their board certification requires and means. Be careful about traveling for Plastic Surgery procedures. Having your surgeon nearby can be critical. I always feel bad for patients who have adverse outcomes from surgery done in other cities. They feel lost when they return and don’t know what to do. Dr. Campbell’s residency was in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at UT Southwestern in Dallas, ranked multiple times by U.S. News & World Report and Doximity as the #1 Plastic Surgery training program in the country. She continued in New York City with an Aesthetic Surgery Fellowship at the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital.

The success of Jared Small’s Faded exhibition, shown this winter at David Lusk Gallery, was apparent before the preview event even occurred. Upon entering the gallery, I noticed that there were small red dots, indicating sold, on nearly every piece of his art. Jared attributed the demand for his art to the desire for beauty amidst a backdrop of concern these past two years and to the nature of our city: both beautiful and flawed. The artist's typical composition categories are botanicals, portraits and houses. He is best known for his paintings of stately, run-down Memphis homes. “I started painting old, dilapidated houses because I grew up in a neighborhood with a lot of them,” says Jared. He noticed similar homes in neighborhoods, sometimes only a few streets away, that were in much better condition than the ones in his neighborhood. Jared reflects, “Even though the people living in the well-maintained homes might have been viewed in a more positive light, I knew the people in the rundown homes and had a positive view of them. I wanted to show the beauty of positive things that many people overlook.” Showing the beauty amidst the dilapidation is exactly what Small so elegantly does. In his Faded exhibition, the painting Gray House depicts beautiful flowers growing around the door of a decaying home. Painting this house made Jared question the cause of the decay. “Is it because of a loss of a loved one? Or the loss of employment? And, yet, why is that same person able to maintain those beautiful flowers?” Jared continues, “I feel like unfortunate circumstances can prevent someone from maintaining their home, but maybe taking care of flowers is something they can control and a way to add beauty to their life.” He believes that most people are just doing their best, and that is where the true beauty lies. This juxtaposition of beauty and dilapidation is also symbolic of the artist's own feelings about our River City, adding, “There are so many things to love about Memphis, its rich history, beautiful architecture, food, music and most definitely art.” But what would Jared like to change? “I wish the education system was better. If we could get it to a higher level throughout the city, I think it would fix a lot of the problems such as crime and workforce issues.” Maybe then the houses would begin to more closely resemble one another from one neighborhood to the next. “Although not everything about Memphis’ history is positive, I try to let the positive aspects and viewpoint inform my art.” CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Jared’s process is complex, yet intuitive. He begins with an image and an idea in his mind. Most of his subjects are actual Memphis homes, people he knows and local flowers he arranges. Once his subject has been selected, he creates a rough sketch on paper and then takes a photo of the sketch that he uses to create a digital image on his computer where he can lay everything out and make adjustments. Next, he draws the future painting on its final surface: canvas or acrylic. And finally, he moves to the fun part: painting! Jared's style of painting has been described as magical realism, where parts of each piece are very accurate in detail, while other elements are abstract or faded. His house paintings depict the gabled roofs, dormer windows and decorative woodwork found in many of the older Memphis homes. However, there is also an aspect of each painting that appears out of focus or faded, as if part of the scenery or house is dripping off the canvas. It has been said that this magical realism can allow the viewer to enter a dream-like state, between the realities of the obvious and the mysteries that seem to exist beneath the surface. When Jared is not painting, he continues to create. “I am a very hands-on person,” he says. “Whenever I am not painting, I am building something, like furniture, or doing home renovations.” He also likes to travel and learn about different cultures. I had the pleasure of meeting Jared in

his studio, housed within his beautiful, impeccably maintained Midtown home. Cynthia, Jared’s wife and creative partner, often builds the very canvases upon which he paints. Both Jared and Cynthia are native Memphians. He attended Overton High School and the University of Memphis and is a completely self-taught artist. If the way to a man's heart is really through his stomach then macho Memphians don't stand a chance when it comes to evading cupid's arrow. The River City boasts acclaimed savory options ranging from BBQ and handmade pasta to craft beer and everything in between. But we also have a sweet spot on the map. When it comes to indulging your sweet tooth this Valentine's Day (or just because you made it through the holidays, you survived dry January, your work wife needs a pick-me-up, your team won the NCAA National Championship, or they lost...), look no further than these local purveyors of the sugary suite. Pictured: strawberry cake from Sweet Lala's, cookies n' creme truffles from Moore Truffles, Dinsthul's champagne truffle (don't miss their chocolate covered strawberries this month!) and Shotwell Candies' chocolate covered caramels all arranged atop beautiful papers from the Art Center in Midtown. *Note: No sweets were discarded or otherwise wasted in the making of this collage. They just could not stay here.

CHROMOTHERAPY Color therapy is meant to balance energy in the body. Every hue, tint, tone and shade can evoke feelings and a response. While it may be a pseudoscience, we think it can certainly alleviate seasonal affective disorder. Ancient Egyptians created sun-activated solariums with colored glass to capture the curative light. They even built temples with specific rooms dedicated to the medicinal powers of different colors. We find these distinct interiors created by some of our favorite River City interior designers to be just as evocative and ever so healing. chef kelly english
Chef Kelly English’s name is synonymous with culinary acclaim for Restaurant Iris, The Second Line, Fino's, and Panta. Behind the scenes, Kelly has been known to place a food table outside his restaurant for folks in need to enjoy on holidays. In 2020, Kelly began hosting an annual "Day of Warmth" at The Second Line. Homeless Memphians are treated to warm clothes, a meal, haircuts and more. Kelly says Covid showed us that our livelihoods can quickly be threatened. “We survived on the generosity of others, and will pass it on when we can.” Due to recent resurgence of Covid, the Day of Warmth was postponed, but not abandoned, and Kelly’s kindness will continue to inspire.

“Nothing links man to man like the frequent passage from hand to hand of a good book." (Walter Sickert)
Novel booksellers understand this truth. As ambassadors between readers and the books they love, Novel experts such as general manager Eddie Burton and booksellers Mark Frederick and Joanne Van Zandt build our local community by keeping these conversations going and giving shape to the unifying and fulfilling pastime of reading. Here are three current favorites they recommend. The Appalachian Trail: A Biography by Philip D'Anieri A narrative nonfiction book about the Appalachian Trail and the backstory of dreamers and builders who helped bring it to life over the past century. This selection is one of Eddie’s favorites because it tells a historic tale from a fresh angle in that D'Anieri’s approach is a collection of biographies. The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz by Erik Larson It is 1940. During Winston Churchill’s first year as prime minister, Hitler waged a relentless bombing campaign. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together. Recommended by Mark, this book is an engaging tale of Churchill’s first year in office and, Mark suggests, mirrors the resolve Americans have had throughout the recent pandemic. The Reading List: A Novel by Sara Nisha Adams An unforgettable and heartwarming debut about how a chance encounter with a list of library books helps forge an unlikely friendship between two very different people in a London suburb. Joanne says she knows her customers will enjoy this one because it is a thought-provoking, lighthearted story that challenges the reader to question just what they would do if they found such a list. Lansky Bros. Bernard Lansky was dressing Duke Ellington before he met Elvis. At his shop on Beale, his vision for Elvis created fashion that shaped history. Father and daughter team, Hal and Julie Lansky, are continuing his legacy as second and third generation owners. Currently nestled in The Peabody Hotel, Lansky Bros. is a destination shop. We love their custom line, Clothier to the King. From rockabilly shirts, leather jackets and of course style nods to Elvis. The Harper shirt is a retro look but feels fresh for a night out. They also carry contemporary lines like Vuori, On Running, Karlie and Edwin Denim for men and women. Visit their shop to work on a custom piece and pick up wardrobe staples while you are there. lanskybros.com
MoSH Shop The best part about a museum gift shop is that it’s truly curated. We love our MoSH Shop. It’s one of the top places in town to get birthday presents for kids (big and little). Unique gifts range from historical artifacts, educational games, wildlife stuffed animals, books, toys and more. Memphis’ MoSH (Museum of Science and History) may always be the “Pink Palace” in our hearts, but we recommend a visit this month. Don’t miss the new Native American culture exhibition. Social Carmen Bond loves a tablescape. If you want to master the art of table-setting, visit her shop Social, a shop for gracious living. She and her team will show you how to put it all together. We love using her Zafferano cordless indoor/outdoor lamps. The petite lamps are small enough to sit on a dinner table, come in loads of colors and emit just enough warm light. Try mixing her estate silver pieces with two lamps as your centerpiece – old meets new. Start with placemats from La Gallina Matta (you can wipe them down, but they look like fine linen). We are eyeing her exclusive china lines Ginori and Alberto Pinto. When the weather warms (possibly midweek during our Memphis winter), use the lamps for porch dinners. social-memphis
Sushi Jimmi If “Shaggy Dog” means anything to you, you need to know that Jimmy Sinh is still in town. After pivoting from his food truck and various restaurant projects, Sushi Jimmi is focusing on his to-go and catering business. He can create massive sushi platters to taste. You can request his old favorites like the Los Angeles and Shaggy Dog rolls. We recommend a platter of his hand rolls along with a family box meal. Book him for a private chef experience at home and your place turns into dinner and a show. 901.604.0058. @sushi_jimmi

All Heart in the Carpente r Art Garden LOVE LIVES IN BINGHAMPTON The Carpenter Art Garden, a welcoming and sprawling oasis for young Binghampton residents, was conceived in 2012 when a blighted lot in the neighborhood was transformed into an outdoor art classroom. Over the next few years, passionate neighborhood residents, local artists, and generous volunteers listened to the community needs and responded by joining forces to enable year-round, free programming aimed at empowering Binghampton youth to create their best futures. Now celebrating their 10th year, the non-profit continues to promote each child's creativity and self-worth through exposure to artistic, educational, and vocational programs they might not otherwise be exposed to in eight beautiful spaces along Carpenter Street. Programming aims to cultivate creativity, a love of learning, relationship-building, leadership, and neighborhood pride.
This month, the children are gearing up for their annual yard heart project when approximately 125 lovingly cutout decorated wooden hearts will be staked in the yards of Binghampton residents on Valentine's Day. "It really is a visible act of love," says Executive Director, Megan Banaszek. "We have passed out over 2,000 hearts to our Binghamton neighbors!" From this project, and the creative mind of one former student named Dante, the iconic Grizz Hearts (and subsequently a very successful fundraising campaign for CAG) were born. Proceeds from the sale of the hearts were used to build the indoor art space on Carpenter Street, The Purple House. While Dante has graduated, CAG continues to leave it's mark on the hearts of Binghampton residents and beyond. CarpenterArtGarden.org

After school homework help is offered in the newest spot on the block affectionately dubbed "Aunt Lou’s House".
"The yard hearts are a reflection of what these kids have in their hearts on a given day," says Banaszek.
