We created a space that blended perfectly with our client’s rustic postand-beam home, but that brought a bit of modernity to the space, while also incorporating a touch of Moroccan flair. While building in functionality and comfort, we also put in the elements and touches that met all of the aesthetic and stylistic goals, while elevating the look beyond the sum of its parts.

WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR RESIDENTS LOOKING TO MAKE UPGRADES TO THEIR HOMES THIS YEAR KARLA?
The kitchen is the most important improvement a homeowner can make when updating their home to increase its value. Minor tweaks such as a new backsplash or freshly painted cabinets, new countertops and new lighting can go a long way with little expense. Focus on high-ROI projects such as bathroom renovations, enhancing curb appeal with landscaping, a new front door, and adding energy-efficient features. Finishing the basement or improving attic insulation can also add value. Prioritize projects based on your budget and local market trends.
Research the current trends and demands in your local real estate market. Understand what features are popular and add value. Look at recently sold homes in your neighborhood with similar features. Assess how renovations or improvements impacted their sale prices. Consult with a realtor to understand which improvements are likely to yield the best returns. Compass offers sellers a hassle–free way to sell their home faster and for a higher price. Compass Concierge helps you maximize your home’s value with home improvement services like staging, flooring, painting and more with zero due until closing. Keep in mind, most buyers are not fully aware of what upgrades and renovations cost and prefer turnkey.
ARTICLE BY MARY DOUGHERTY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAY GRAYGORRemote work has elevated the significance of having a dedicated and well-designed home office space. Buyers often prioritize homes with functional and aesthetically pleasing workspaces. A home office can add value to a property and attract a broader range of potential buyers who appreciate the convenience and flexibility of having a dedicated work area within their homes.
Even spare bedrooms can pivot as a good home office. Simplify by using a daybed or even a Murphy Bed for when guests arrive.
Creating a functional outdoor living space can increase a home's value.
A well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing landscaping, including trees, plants, and flowers, enhances curb appeal plus an outdoor kitchen can be a luxurious and valuable addition. Gathering spots such as fire pits set the tone for entertaining around the fire.
Since mid-2020, our local towns have witnessed a surge in home prices, driven by increased buyer demand—an advantageous scenario. However, the primary concern in 2024 is the persistent shortage of housing inventory. Despite qualified buyers across different price points, achieving supply and demand equilibrium has proven elusive, resulting in steady home prices. Highly sought-after towns like Ridgefield, Redding, and Wilton, renowned for their suburban lifestyle and excellent schools, remain in high demand. Economists predict a potential decline in interest rates, which could contribute to a more balanced buyer/seller dynamic and a return to seasonal trends.
“Remote work has elevated the significance of having a dedicated and well-designed home office space. Buyers often prioritize homes with functional and aesthetically pleasing workspaces.”
A new designer has moved to town and we were thrilled to catch up with her at her residence. Darci Hether is now working between New York City and Ridgefield where she works with clients to help them design and create spaces that are ideal for their lifestyle.
The hope of experiencing the four seasons and to hone my design skills for a more modern aesthetic. I moved to NYC in spring of 2002 and I worked with a couple of amazing firms over the course of 5 years before going out on my own. I always knew I would have my own firm but I wanted to learn about the city and all of its nuances before hanging my shingle.

Absolutely! Having a home office that I work from 2-3 days a week makes it very easy for me to see clients locally. Spending a few days a week in the city allows me to shop and source all of the beautiful furnishings and materials we like to incorporate into all of our designs. It’s the best of both worlds.
We caught up with Andrea Romeo, Co-Owner of Romeo + Baglio Design in Ridgefield to give you some tips on mixing old and new elements to create a sophisticated look in your home in addition to some insights on the latest in landscaping and the thrill of designing Whip Salon!
Jasmine Gannalo, who is a local realtor shines light on a new design trend, Eclectic Grandpa.
Mixing old and new elements in interior design creates a gorgeous yet personal aesthetic. Andrea states that 'to create a beautiful mix of vintage and contemporary design, integrate elements from the past or even your own family heirlooms. It’s a balancing act mixing materials, textures and time periods.' For example, mix metals with warm woods, and pops of color with neutrals. Start with pieces like vintage accent tables, buffets or dressers and mix them in with your more contemporary furniture. Give a piece new life with a fun paint color and add in some modern knobs. If it is a full renovation you are doing, try to keep the original character of the home where possible. Keep little nooks, windows, interesting molding or builtins when possible. And lastly, add little moments, vintage frames and decorative accents can add life and interest to a bookshelf or tabletop.'
Switching gears to the outside of the home, landscaping and the curb appeal of your home is really the first impression someone gets when they see your home. Not to mention it can increase your home’s resale value. It should ultimately match the style of your home on the inside and out. In other words, If your
home is a saltbox colonial your landscaping should be different from that of a contemporary home. You can play around with plantings, adding in those that bloom against year-long green ones. Things like fencing, rock walls, decorative walkways and other hardscapes add beauty to your home. The outside is the beginning of the story and when you walk in it should continue with this story, your story.
Amy Pal is the best, we have worked together on many more salons since the first in Ridgefield. She knew exactly the feel that she wanted to evoke in her salon and our job was to interpret her vision. While each has their own unique vibe there are iconic elements that are common to all. The initial goal was to create a space that had edge yet elegance, sophistication yet welcoming, soothing yet hip. We mix elements of different metals, reclaimed wood, and industrial details to juxtapose soft hues, beautiful lighting and fun textures.
Local realtor, Jasmine Gannalo is a fan of “Eclectic Grandpa”. which is a new design craze. She describes it like this: "Imagine you are in the home of your worldly, educated grandfather; surrounding you are old furnishings, interesting art, books, and decor, collected over a lifetime. The color scheme doesn’t exist, patterns are mixed haphazardly, and furniture styles span decades. Because of the nature of this “trend”, it is very difficult, albeit impossible to simply head to your local home décor store to recreate. What’s wonderful about this look is that it’s sustainable and accessible.
“The initial goal was to create a space that had edge yet elegance, sophistication yet welcoming, soothing yet hip.”
- Andrea Romeo
At the heart of the home, kitchens are the central hub of the household, where families and friends can share meals and conversations in a warm and inviting space. So it should be no surprise that the latest trends in kitchens focus on harmonizing functionality and maintainability with style. No one knows this better than the team at Ridgefield’s family-owned Venezia Marble. Their showroom showcases a wide selection of natural stones like granite, marble, quartzite, soapstone, and quartz and the team works with customers on every detail from selection to installation.
Co-owner Luana Aguiar notes that stone elements are making a significant impact on the overall aesthetic and functionality of modern kitchens. Granite and quartzite countertops are known for their durability and stain resistance. “In 2024, stone backsplashes will add depth and visual interest. Extending the stone countertop to the wall will create a seamless, streamlined look and create visual depth.”
Floating shelves continue to be a popular option, injecting a fresh vibe with an open and airy feel. “While floating shelves are typically made of wood, metal or glass, incorporating a full backsplash made of the same stone as the shelves creates a cohesive look and makes a bold statement,” Aguiar continues. “Integrated stone sinks are also gaining popularity, creating a seamless and appealing look.”
Say goodbye to the grey and white palettes of recent years. Local designer Rebecca Staub notes that earthy hues and warm tones are making a comeback. “In 2024, we will embrace the warmth of browns and creamy beiges…and spaces with nature-inspired mustards, earthy terracottas, reds and pinks.”
Chrome and silver lighting is having a resurgence that will add sophistication to any space. “Opt for polished finishes to introduce a subtle hint of bling, complemented by natural finishes for an organic feel,” said Staub.
Functionality remains at the forefront of kitchen design with an emphasis on smart storage solutions and layouts to accommodate multitasking. Working with a designer, such as Abigail Braden of August Interiors, can help prioritize and tailor every detail of the design to your individual lifestyle. “The details are where you can really make your personal mark --for example, do you want doors vs. drawers in the cabinets, what are you going to use your countertops for and what’s your (honest) level of maintenance, and what are your priorities for space planning?”
Embracing a blend of form and function with style and sophistication, today’s kitchens boast design elements that serve a purpose and maximize efficiency while emphasizing visual appeal.

Beyond functionality, an organized closet fosters a sense of order and calm, positively impacting mental well-being. In essence, closet organization goes beyond neatness – it transforms daily living by creating an environment that is both visually pleasing and conducive to a streamlined, stress-free lifestyle. Who doesn’t want that?
• Declutter: Sort and throw out unnecessary items. Take everything out and start with a blank canvas.
• Categorize: Group similar items together. Make a keep pile, a donation pile and a throw-out pile.
• Utilize storage solutions: Shelves, bins, and organizers will become your best friends.
• Seasonal rotations: Switch out clothing items based on the season.
• Regular maintenance: Avoid clutter buildup through periodic cleanups.
• Color-coding: Make it easier to locate items at a glance. Add different colored labels to bins so you know what is in them.
If organizing is not your cup of tea, get help from the professionals. Recently, we had the chance to speak with two businesses local to Ridgefield, Breathing Space and Liberty Closet and Garage Co., who shared some great advice for anyone working with professionals when remodeling/organizing their closets:
1. Set up an interview with them to discuss your expectations of the project, including a shared vision, goals and budget.
2. Focus on a system that will work with your style so you will find it easy to stay organized.
3.The closet should have an efficiency of space and style as well as ease of use.
4. The designer should listen to your wants, but understand that what you think you want may not always be possible. They are professionals with years of experience.

ARTICLE BY ANGI HOCKETT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONESThe art of soap making has come a long way since our grandmothers’ day. All the nourishing oils, beautiful colors, scents and exfoliants would have been a dream to her. Today, it is easy to custom make soap for any skin type. Adding oils such as avocado, olive, jojoba, and argon are just a few ingredients to make a rich smooth bar.
Not only do handmade soaps get super-fatted oils to add moisture, they can also include some amazing exfoliants, additives and scents. A few of my favorites are honey, aloe juice, goat’s milk, activated charcoal and clays.
If you want to get started making soap try this simple pour and mold recipe.
• 2 lb. goat’s milk melt-and-pour soap
• 1 lemon rind, zested
• 3 tablespoons of dried lavender buds
• 2 tablespoons of honey
• 15 drops of lavender essential oil
• 6 drops of lemon essential oil
• jar or bowl for melting soap base
• Silicone mold
Chop soap into smaller pieces. It will melt faster this way. Place in bowl and microwave (or double boil). Be careful to watch soap and not let it burn. If you are using microwave, heat in 30 second increments, stirring frequently. Once soap is melted add your essential oils first. Once essential oils have been added and mixed thoroughly, add the lavender buds, lemon zest and honey. Have your mold ready to go, on a flat, even surface. You’ll want to move quickly before the soap cools too much. Mix everything thoroughly again, and pour mixture into mold. Let the soap cool for 2-3 hours until bars are completely solid. Wrap or package however you like.
