LIFESTYLE LETTER
A New Year, A New Me (kind of) For many of us, the end of the year is full of excitement and anticipation. A time to reset, chase our ambitions, and pursue new goals. The reality is that the best intentions often end in disappointment. Dusty home exercise equipment, dormant gym memberships, drawers full of clean workout clothes, and forgotten notes to self about how we’re committing to a healthier lifestyle. We set the bar high, start out like we got shot out of a cannon, and then succumb to the reality that the change we’re looking for is hard. So hard that we’re content to wait until next year to restart the cycle. As a former professional athlete, health, wellness, and fitness have always been top of mind. Sure, there’s always been some seasonality to my routines, but in general I’ve always found that trying to keep things in a fairly tight range works best. Until this year. Between career shifts, injuries, and some big life events, I’m now looking at January with massive anticipation. A time to put my fork down a little sooner, sleep a little more, indulge a little less, and exercise a lot more. As my grandmother used to say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions (thanks Nana!) and I want to avoid being a statistic. So I’m going to take a few small actions that should help get me where I want to be. First, I find great motivation and accountability from being a part of a community so rather than just going to the gym, I’m going to do some group fitness classes. I’m also going to start tracking my sleep. For me, understanding what leads to poor sleep (even if I think I already know) is key to changing bad habits. Lastly, I want to be intentional with my eating and drinking, and while I can’t say I’ve eaten my last dessert or had my last cocktail, I want to do a better job of being conscious of frequency and what I’m putting into my body. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home, and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you.

What do Paul McCabe and the habit-building strategy of The Clean Slate have in common? The winning ticket to creating a healthy lifestyle. Take it from a food expert, kale might not be the lynchpin to your health goals. Gasp! Executive Chef of The Club at Rancharrah, Paul McCabe, offers level-headed advice for those seeking a solution to their wellness frustrations – listen to your body. It’s easy to get caught up in the hype of fad diets, or what other people are doing. When you take the time to start over (i.e. elimination diet) and slowly add back in foods and notice how your body reacts, you’re more likely to discover your winning ticket for feeling and looking your best. Coming from San Diego, Chef Paul knows a thing or two about premium ingredients, especially produce. His move to Reno wowed him with Northern Nevada’s offerings of fresh wild game and forage products. We are all blessed to live in one of the most beautiful landscapes with access to the Great Outdoors and all the activities it has to offer. Combine that with the fresh, locally-sourced produce and proteins and getting to know yourself better, and that’s a recipe for success. Reno’s lifestyle is a high bar to meet, so whether you, or someone you know, is considering relocating into or out of the Truckee Meadows, our team can help you find the area locally, or around the world, that best suits your needs and helps you thrive in life.
We wish you the best in 2024 and may your New Year’s Resolutions take flight and go the distance.

Coffee Collection It’s not where you’ve bean, but where you’re going next
ARTICLE BY ERIN HANNA-BUTROS MEYERING
There is no shortage of coffee places in Reno--that’s for sure. In addition to some standouts below, consider: Coffee & Comics, Superstitions Coffee, Café Con Papi, Walden’s Coffeehouse, Purple Bean, and JoStella Coffee Company.
OLD WORLD COFFEE LAB
This winter season, Old World is featuring a creamy and cozy Peppermint Bark Latte, with a white mocha and peppermint brown sugar base. There’s also the Nutcracker Latte, sweet and spiced with an almond and anise brown sugar syrup topped with sea salt and truly the epitome of holiday cheer (if you’re not over the holidays quite yet).
No City Coffee makes lattes into art.
NO CITY COFFEE
Meet the Cortado, a traditional drink that shows off both the quality of the espresso and the skill of the barista. Made from espresso and equal parts warm, steamed milk, the Cortado is a simple yet elegant classic. All beans used at No City are locally roasted personally by Ryan Stark and are rated AAA specialty coffee from India with low acidity for easy (and tasty) consumption. Plus, you can order it with organic house-made almond milk.

Supporting Community this New Year WHERE TO GIVE YOUR TIME AND MONEY IN 2024 ARTICLE BY BRITTON GRIFFITH In the New Year, we leave our holiday seasons behind us with a fresh slate of events, activities and hobbies ahead. What better way to keep the spirit of generosity going all year long than by participating in a charity? In giving back you can gain so much and there is something for everyone in the Reno-Tahoe area. When choosing where to donate your time or treasure, I advise people to get involved with something that ‘fills your cup’. Reno’s community has so many wonderful non-profits and efforts to make our region and our planet better for everyone. There is an important checklist when playing matchmaker for volunteering that I like to use. The most important starting point is pursuing something you are passionate about. Once you select an avenue of goodwill that you enjoy, set expectations and goals for your volunteering. With a full sphere of ways to help others, donating your time can come in the form of fundraising, board service, or providing items the location needs. Finally, it’s time to select which organization meets your volunteer criteria. You can research places, ask friends or colleagues, or you can take my suggestions for some of my favorite charities in town.
ANIMALS… For nearly 30 years this non-profit has been saving dog’s lives. In particular, they help small dogs (less than 30 pounds) find permanent homes, provide medical treatment, and help animals become more adoptable in a safe environment. They say ‘seniors’ are the new ‘puppies’ and at ‘For Pet’s Sake’, adopting, donating, or fostering proves this is true. forpetssakereno.org

Breathing Your Way to a Healthier Life BREATHWORK IS AN ANCIENT PRACTICE THAT CAN HELP OVERALL HEALTH, REDUCE STRESS AND IMPROVE MOOD
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANGELA RUDOLPH
More restful sleep, better oxygen flow in the bloodstream, less anxiety, and improved mood... all these effects and more have been attributed to a very old practice that has found its way back into popularity: breathwork. Many of us give little, if any, thought to our breath throughout the day. But what if by breathing mindfully we could improve some of our most common and uncomfortable ailments? Breathwork is the practice of focusing on your breath and learning to manipulate and control the flow of air within the body. “When you focus on your breath, you will start to notice where it goes within your body,” Cori Hoefner, a local fitness instructor and personal trainer with a degree in Community Health and Kinesiology, says. “With enough mindful practice, you’ll start to learn where it goes within your body and how you can send it to different places. Breathwork helps bring you into your body.” Hoefner says some of the earliest benefits she has noticed when practicing breathwork is a reduction in stress and anxiety because of its ability to bring you into the present, in a somewhat similar way to how meditation works. Breathwork sessions can last anywhere from

one to 30 minutes, depending on your experience level. The flexibility of the practice, and the versatility of being able to use it where and how works best for the individual, is perhaps part of why it has gained popularity. “You can practice it even when you start to feel overwhelmed throughout the day by pausing what you are doing and taking five deep, mindful breaths,” Hoefner suggests. “While a true session should last 15 to 30 minutes, beginners can start by practicing for 1-2 minutes multiple times throughout the day and build their stamina.” There are many variations of breathwork including box breathing, nostril alternation, belly breathing, and more. Hoefner advises starting with something simple like focusing on the flow of the breath and breathing deeply. “Focusing on taking an inhale that lasts the same amount of time as the exhale is a great beginner move,” she says. “Breathing is important in almost all exercise, and you may already be doing certain activities that involve controlling the breath like yoga and swimming. Breathwork is separate from physical activity, and it helps you learn that breath itself is a tool. You generally practice breathwork sitting down or even lying on your back.” “You want to be cautious that you don’t push yourself too far too quickly, as some of the techniques can be a little tiring on the nervous system. By starting small and building, you can feel positive effects right away, but be sure to talk to your doctor before starting any practice with the body.” Breathwork can be practiced by just about everyone and you’ll get the biggest benefits if you practice it daily.
what you are doing and taking five deep, mindful breaths.”

Proclivity is a life coaching and nutrition coaching company that offers 12 week programs to help people change their lives with simple habits that are easy to implement. Dubbed the Proclivity Method, members join in on weekly group calls where they learn two new habits each week. Then, they spend the week focused on implementing those habits, whether it’s hydration efforts or sleep quality. “Things that are very simple that anyone can do but you don’t think about doing most of the time,” says Gia Butera, Proclivity’s marketing officer and nutrition development specialist.

He received a bachelor’s in communications with a minor in community health science from the University of Nevada, Reno before becoming a serial entrepreneur and a coach in many facets for more than a decade. Also a UNR graduate, Rodela completed her Nutritional Therapy Practitioner course through the Nutritional Therapy Association (NTA). She previously worked for Black Iron Nutrition before starting Proclivity with Joel. “We help busy professionals take control of their life,” Butera explains.

By focusing on easy nutrition habits in tandem with changing your mindset, accountability becomes the cornerstone of client success. While the group atmosphere is the standard for the Proclivity method, every participant also receives two one-on-one sessions with each coach to focus on personal goals and hone in on their individualized needs. Private sessions are also available for $5,000 for 12 weeks. In contrast, the group setting is $1,500 for the same time period. According to Butera, the method works in large part because it’s not overly difficult. The other piece of the puzzle is the accountability factor. With weekly check ins and group sessions, clients are more likely to stick to the program.

While health and fitness are part of Proclivity, customer testimonials often focus on the mental wellness that comes with completing the program. One client, Maggie H., says, “it has given me the confidence and the grounding that I needed.” Azelin D. says, “I have control over my life in ways I never have before.” For others, the successes are seen on the scale. “I am down 20 pounds in the last three months,” shares Stephanie M. On January 20, Proclivity will host a free goal setting workshop at MidTown Minerals (700 S. Virginia St., Reno) starting at 8 a.m. They also offer quarterly seminars and ongoing social events for alumni.

Walls that Wow
ARTICLE BY NORA HESTON TARTE PHOTOGRAPHY BY FLOW DESIGNS
USE WALLPAPER TO MAKE A STATEMENT
“Wallpaper is about you expressing your personality,” says Kristin Giacomini at Flow Designs. “It’s a great way to make a bold statement and express a little bit more that paint can’t do.” Giacomini suggests using fun, bold and colorful prints—the bigger the better in her opinion. But it’s also best to choose a wallpaper you really love. Because the cost can be high and prep work can take time, you won’t want to replace wallpaper on a whim. The best rooms to put it in? A guest bath or office, someplace you won’t tire of it quickly.
