LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy Holidays!

December 2023 PUBLISHER

Mike McCarthy | mike.mccarthy@citylifestyle.com MANAGING EDITOR

Nora Heston Tarte | nora.tarte@citylifestyle.com

Welcome to the second edition of City Lifestyle Reno. We were absolutely overwhelmed by the positive response to our first issue and are excited to bring you our sophomore effort. With the holidays upon us, I wanted to take a minute to reflect on what is most important to us: family, friends and holiday traditions; the magic of giving and receiving gifts; the lights, the fragrant, cool air; and, most of all, the chance to spend time with loved ones. Life only gets busier and the few opportunities we have to slow down and appreciate what matters are scarce but also massively important. In my house, it’s our turn to host the family this year. Our table will be filled with kids, parents, grandparents, and great food. We’ll tell stories and jokes, we’ll Facetime those that can’t make it to Reno and we'll raise a glass or two for those that are no longer with us. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season in Reno. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community who need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this month (and beyond) is to feel love and peace, and to always remember to take care of each other, extending grace and empathy to others. Happy Holidays! ‘Twas the night before Christmas and all throughout Reno Not a creature was stirring, not even in the casino. The home was staged with stylish care, In hopes that a buyer would soon be there. The family rested well, all snug in their beds, As thoughts of full-price offers danced in their heads. ‘But what of this market?’ their minds swirled, All that could go wrong had their toes curled. The very next morning they made a smart call, “We need the David Morris Group, they never drop the ball.” Now with the right team to guide them along, Their faith in a great outcome was really quite strong. With a caring word and unparalleled expertise, Their transaction was smooth, not a single crease. When all was said and done, it was smiles all around, Cheers, celebrations, and true connections abound. This story shares a strong loop, When you’re in need of the best, call the David Morris Group. Good Mood Food Edgy music, handcrafted cocktails, and well-rested dough set the mood at DOPO Pizza & Pasta ARTICLE BY ERIN HANNA-BUTROS MEYERING | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIC MARKS

If you peruse the website, you’ll find that “dopo” is derived from the Italian word for “after.” If you speak to a member of the staff, they’ll passionately say the same, that DOPO Pizza & Pasta is where you gather after the day, either reveling in your wins or drowning in your sorrows. Sometimes both. “The goal is always to get them to leave feeling better than they came,” says Chef Adam Bronson. And he’s right, there’s not much Italian food can’t fix, especially when it’s made with this much care.

DISTINCT & DELICIOUS DOPO does things a little differently. Their inspiration? Red sauce joints back east, local farmers and food artisans, and good old Italia. DOPO pizza dough is made with ZeroZero flour and each batch is fermented for 72 hours before being tossed, flattened, and fired. The fermentation process, and the recipe itself, allow the gluten to further break down, making the Neapolitan-style pizza extremely light and fresh. It’s not one of those greasy, sad, saggy slices you’ll regrettably eat just because it's CONTINUED >

“The goal is always to get them to leave feeling better than they came,” - Chef Adam Bronson

resemblant of pizza. It’s the type of pizza where you’ve savored one, two, or three pieces and you feel like you can still consume more (speaking from experience). You can expect a few things when sitting down for a bite at DOPO. One, classics on the menu, such as a Margherita pizza and spaghetti and meatballs. Two, to try new things (perhaps the “Fig & Pig” pizza with prosciutto and fig preserves, topped with shaved parmigiano reggiano, arugula, and a balsamic glaze; a margarita with a sugar rim; or maybe the Magic Cookie proclaiming to take you on a trip with its organic bittersweet 66% cacao, sprinkled with Maldon sea salt). Three, to tap your foot along to the music (again, speaking from experience). The recipes at DOPO are disciplined, Chef Adam says. Everything, from the measurements to water temperature matters to create that perfect al dente pasta and crispy (yet still chewy) pizza crust. In the end, DOPO is modern Italian food meets gastropub, with a surprisingly at-ease Chef Adam at the helm.

LEADING THROUGH FOOD But that ease wasn’t built overnight. Chef Adam has been in the area for nearly 20 years running bakeries, kitchens in country clubs, restaurants, casinos, and everything in between. And at 10-years-sober (and counting), he believes the kitchen is not only where you can learn about great food, but also learn about (and foster) being greater. “To me, [the title] Chef means leader,” he says. His path to living a whole and balanced life has been, at times, an arduous one. He’s now passionate about helping make kitchens a safer place for these conversations, and really a place for positive influences.

14

H OT SP OT | FOOD + BEV E RAGE

Chef Adam also believes in surrounding himself with the best people. One of these people is DOPO manager Eric Schoenfeld-Mineur. “That ethos is embodied by Eric and the environment causes the food to be better,” says Chef Adam. Eric comes with such a level of integrity, he says, supporting the team on one of the several days a week they hand-make oodles and oodles of pasta (or is it oodles and oodles of noodles?)

CHEERS TO THAT What’s a delicious dinner out without a good cocktail (or mocktail)? DOPO’s cocktail menu is continually honed. Whether you order a classic Negroni, house-made limoncello, or nice glass of red, you’re in good company. Perhaps a margarita to accompany your Margherita? An after-dinner Caffe Notte? Guests can even imbibe on a nonalcoholic beverage from the recently adapted and expanded mocktail menu.

INSPIRED BY & CONTINUING TO INSPIRE DOPO was opened just a few years ago by Coffeebar founder Greg Buchheister. In line with his other restaurants, DOPO serves local ingredients when possible, including Mountain Mushrooms, Tahoe Creamery, Prema Farms, and Beloved Bread—to name just a few. Full of sugar, spice, and everything nice, DOPO wants you to consider it your neighborhood pizza and pasta joint. With recently expanded hours, DOPO is open seven days a week and is bringing a second location inside Reno Public Market this holiday season.

Deck the Halls GOOSE RITTER AND ENRIQUE TADEO GO ALL OUT FOR CHRISTMAS

No scrooges allowed! Goose Ritter decorates his 4,680-square-foot Double Diamond home with 18 trees every holiday season, plus a slew of other holiday décor. “The holidays are the most magical time of the year,” Ritter says. “It’s our favorite holiday and we go all out!” Ritter’s house, which he shares with fiancé Enrique Tadeo, is covered in tasteful decorations, but the centerpiece of every room is the collection of Christmas trees. In all, the couple sets up 15 large trees and three small ones. In years past, all have been faux, but for 2024 they are adding a real tree, cut down with Ritter’s family. “I love the light and the feeling of all the trees and lights. We keep the lights on all night and day

so we can enjoy anytime,” Ritter shares. They get a head start, too. Typically, the decorating starts on November 1 and they leave everything up until the New Year. Decorating is a festive affair, with Christmas music playing and hot chocolate to fuel the frenzy. “Each tree is unique… We have gnome trees, Disney trees, [a] red tree, [a] gold tree, gold/black trees with antlers, colorful trees, and the candy tree,” Ritter says. The trees range from 3-12 feet tall. “Our home is listed for sale so we can have more space for Christmas,” Ritter laughs. “We would love to have taller ceilings—I know that our ceilings are already tall—and more space for storage so we can decorate for other holidays.”

ARTIST’S SPOTLIGHT ARTICLE BY NORA HESTON TARTE PHOTOGRAPHY SUPPLIED BY GEMMA HARTLEY

AUTHOR GEMMA HARTLEY IS NO LONGER FED UP, BUT SHE’S STILL SPEAKING UP

Gemma Hartley Gemma Hartley has gained international fame as a freelance writer and author of several books. Most notably, Fed Up explores the complicated relationships between romantic partners and the invisible mental load many women endure. Tell me about your first book, FED UP. I really stumbled into being the expert on the mental load and emotional labor because of my viral article “Women Aren’t Nags - We’re Just Fed Up” in Harper’s Bazaar. I only had six months to write the book and hadn’t done any previous research other than what was required for the original article. It was a steep learning curve and a completely chaotic deadline with three young kids in the house. During the writing of that book, I became deeply passionate about the subject because I began to see all the ways the mental load and emotional labor affect our daily lives. How Did FED UP blow up? My article was shared over 2 million times within the first week of publication and prompted agents to reach out asking me about the potential of writing a book on the topic. Within a single month, I had a signed contract with HarperCollins, and a six month deadline to write the book. It was an absolute whirlwind. Since the book came out, I’ve traveled around

18

the world speaking on the topic of emotional labor and the mental load. The fact that I can say I’ve been on Good Morning America and spoken at the Sydney Opera House still feels surreal. What impact did writing FED UP have on your own relationships? I think writing this book saved my marriage. It didn’t feel in peril at the time, but I think the resentment that would have built up over the years if I had continued to be the sole person carrying the mental load in our household would have eventually become unsustainable. Shifting the balance of the mental load has made our relationship so much deeper and fulfilling, because we see, value, acknowledge and share the work it takes to keep our household running. I never feel alone or unvalidated in my relationship because my husband shows up so fully for our shared life. CONTINUED >

“Being the person in charge of noticing, planning, delegating and overseeing everything...? It takes a lot out of you.” What new projects are on the horizon? I currently have a completed novel and a new book of essays that are on submission. In addition to the books, I’m working on releasing a podcast with my husband about our journey through balancing the mental load, as well as facilitating more group writing programs. Tell me about your position as a writing coach. As a dedicated writing coach, I offer personalized 1:1 support, guidance and accountability to help writers at any stage in their career achieve their writing goals. My current roster includes writers working in fantasy, memoir, mystery/thriller, researched non-fiction, and contemporary fiction. I’ve never liked a one-size-fits all approach, so I adapt to writers’ individual needs, ensuring that we create a framework that aligns with your goals and lifestyle. What are you reading and listening to now? I can’t stop thinking about Amanda Montei’s new book Touched Out about modern motherhood, and on a very different end of the reading spectrum, I’m finally reading the BookTok popular Fourth Wing, which is akin to cotton candy for one’s brain. I’m always listening to The Lazy Genius podcast with Kendra Adachi, and she has a great recent podcast episode specifically on how to negotiate shared standards in your home, which is one of the key concepts in my book. It’s episode 325: “Dealing with Differences on How Something Is Done.”

If you look to the sky, often you’ll see hang-gliders or parasailers riding the warm thermals created by our desert air.”

I love that this mural is tucked away behind the building, so unless you’re actively seeking it out or happen to stumble upon that street, you’d never know it’s there.”

Giving Campaign

2023 24

G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE

“

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”

In the midst of all of this eating take out, dollar menus, etc, had become a way of life for Dennis. A friend stressed that he needed to start taking care of himself, and the advice was simple: “You need to start eating better.” He knew his bad eating habits weren’t good for mind, body or spirit, but he didn’t know where to begin to make changes. However, Prescott thought to himself, “I KNOW good food because I have literally traveled all over America, all over Canada, and into Europe with my music, eating great food and learning what I like.”

The St ar t Dennis went to a nearby library and borrowed three books only to have his friend ask why he chose those in particular. Dennis remembers saying verbatim, “I don’t know? The guy on the cover looks kinda good looking, and I feel like I could probably pull these recipes off, and he seems really happy too!” As it turned out they were three books by Jamie Oliver; it’s just that he had no idea who Jamie Oliver was at the time.

Flash forward and Dennis’ first dinner-hosting experiment was made up of twenty people from the music studio, all sitting in camping chairs with beer koozies and makeshift tables in his apartment. “I remember at the time this moment of, okay, the food is on the table, it’s a stressful thing, and then everybody tucks in and they take their first bite, and there’s a moment of hush that kind of came over everyone; it got really quiet just for a second, and then everyone started talking and getting into it and I fell in love with food right there at that moment. I didn’t realize that you can create these beautiful experiential moments at the table in the same way that I did playing someone’s favorite love song. Knowing that that was a thing to me was the most fascinating thing in the world.” Dennis even got to the point where he was cooking so much that he started to forget what recipes he had successfully made, so he began a photo journal and started taking photos of all his completed dishes. And so it began like it does for most; Dennis began posting food photos to Instagram for the next few years. “All of that was initially with no agenda, no intentionality; I just loved it and I wanted to share. I fell in love with feeding people.” Regarding social media, Dennis’s professional advice is to check your DMs. A person who worked at Food & Wine Magazine at the time sent him a DM, asking if he would do recipes for the magazine, which turned into writing a monthly column. That experience helped him land a cookbook deal, which led to a wealth of TV and media publicity and Dennis feels he owes a lot of his success to that first opportunity with Food & Wine Magazine. Oh, and did we mention he is a self-taught photographer who now does all of his own food shots? This guy has drive. His drive and innate talents ultimately led him to the opportunity of a lifetime via another DM. This time, it was a Netflix executive producer who offered him the chance to work for two seasons on Restaurants on the Edge, a show where “three food and design experts travel the world to revive failing restaurants by connecting them to the local culture beyond their gorgeous views.“ What followed were 13 episodes over nine months where they traveled to and filmed restaurant revivals that included three in Canada, one in the continental US, one in Hawaii, and others outside of North America, including Hong Kong, Slovenia, Austria, Malta, St. Lucia and Finland.

Travel Recom mend at ions for Foodies “Slovenia borders Italy and Croatia, which is to say there are a lot of shared values in and around food; they have really great cheese, dairy, beef, pasta, but very few tourists, hardly any. So if you love Italy, that kind of specific travel and food experience, particularly Northern Italy, because you can see the Alps from where they are. It’s picture perfect, a beautiful place, and also where orange wine is from.” Dennis also highly recommends Costa Rica, Hawaii and Finland. “Most people love the idea of travel, but we tend to pick the same places when we travel, and there is nothing wrong with that, they are amazing for a reason, but when you get off the beaten path a little bit, you learn the difference between vacation and travel.” One of the most common fears Dennis hears from people cooking and/or grilling at home is, ‘where do I start? I don’t know how to get going, so I just don’t.’ Rather than overcomplicating it, Dennis recommends cooking the things that bring you joy — things that are on a restaurant menu you can’t NOT order because you’re so pumped that those dishes are on there. “Find the things that you love. Take the stress out of food. Feed people because all they really care about is spending time with you. Bring joy back into the kitchen.”
