Unbreakable & Unstoppable: Honoring the Quiet Strength of Women

May has always felt like a turning point—a time when everything starts to bloom, not just in nature but within us too. It’s a month that reminds me of how resilient and powerful we are as women, even when we don’t always feel that way.

This issue is about celebrating that quiet strength—the way we keep going when things feel impossible, the way we lift each other up when someone else can’t stand on their own, and the way we find joy even after heartbreak. The women featured in these pages are proof of that strength. They’ve faced setbacks, taken risks, and created something beautiful—not because it was easy, but because they were brave enough to try.

I think sometimes we forget just how strong we are. We downplay our successes, question our decisions, and convince ourselves that we’re not enough. But the truth is—we are. You are. Right now, exactly as you are. And if you need proof, just look at the women around you. The trailblazers, the dreamers, the caretakers— the ones who face life head-on, even when it throws them curveballs. The ones who have walked through fire and still found a way to rise.

Being a woman isn’t always easy. There’s pressure to be everything to everyone, to keep it all together, to put on a brave face even when you feel like you’re falling apart inside. But strength isn’t about perfection. It’s about showing up—for yourself and for others—even when you’re not sure how it’s all going to work out. It’s about trusting that you’re enough, just as you are.

So, as you read through this issue, I hope you feel inspired to embrace your own story—the messy, beautiful, complicated parts of it. Because that’s where the magic is. And I hope you remember that you’re never walking this path alone. We rise together. Always.

With love,

ARTICLE BY PATRANYA BHOOLSUWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CASEY JADE

Shanna Kehoe Partner/Wealth Advisor, Carson Wealth

As Partner & Wealth Advisor for Carson Wealth, Shanna Kehoe says she makes major decisions in her life, similar to how she does in her work.

"I continually take risks in my life, and I am open to change," said Shanna. "I always say yes, which has proven to be good and bad but most of the time it's been good. I have jumped off the cliffs with no parachute multiple times, but those decisions have served me well."

Shanna talked about some of the big risks she took in her career, including leaving her former firm after 15 years, not knowing if her clients were going to come with her.

"You have to be confident and believe in yourself," said Shanna, who is also a mom of two. "Aside from being a risk-taker, I also believe in being accountable for your actions and I expect that from my colleagues, clients, and family. You have one life. Do what you love. Time is of the essence and all you have is now."

Maria Silva

Host/Anchor, Vegas PBS

Veteran television journalist Maria Silva says when life beats her down, she remembers the words of her late mother, “Usted vale mucho, mija” which translates to "You are worth a lot, my daughter."

A first in her family to graduate from college, Maria was the first news anchor for Las Vegas Spanish language TV station, Univision. She also served as anchor and reporter at two other local network affiliate stations, but she said her journey in the news business has not always been a smooth one.

"People remember when you were let go from your job in a very public way and that has you questioning everything, including your own worth," said Maria. "But I learned from my mom to always pick myself up and keep doing what you love and have a positive impact on those around you."

For nearly 3 years, Maria has been doing just that as Host and Anchor at Vegas PBS. A proud immigrant, Maria is continuing her work as a storyteller hosting shows like "Student Spotlight," "Tales from the Trails," and "Bienvenidos a Las Vegas," which explores the Latino community of

Southern Nevada. Maria is also an advisory board member for Latinas in Power, an organization with a mission to provide professional Latinas in Nevada with a network to develop their career and life goals.

"I am blessed to now be in a place to help other women, not only to get a seat at the table but also to create their own," said Maria. "I still get emotional thinking about my mother who did what she could to help me achieve my dreams. I know she would have been very proud to see where I am today."

Amanda Brookhyser

Managing Partner, Zumpano Patricios & Helsten

Amanda Brookhyser exemplifies the trailblazing spirit of women breaking barriers in the legal profession. Her promotion to Managing Partner of the Las Vegas office of Zumpano Patricios, is a milestone that reflects her exceptional career.

With over 15 years of experience, Amanda has established herself as a formidable force in high-stakes litigation. Her impressive record includes securing a groundbreaking $6.5M jury verdict in California's first #MeToo case on behalf of a male victim of childhood sexual assault. This landmark case demonstrates Amanda's ability to tackle complex, sensitive issues and achieve justice for her clients.

She says much of her success is attributed to her approach to navigating the legal field. "Law can be a rocky road, but with help from mentors and perseverance, I've learned that every challenge is an opportunity for growth," said Amanda. She emphasizes the importance of finding a female mentor for young women entering the legal profession, as it was instrumental in her own journey. This is why she is passionate about giving her time to mentor women looking to enter the field.

Amanda has successfully tried more than a dozen high-profile cases to verdict, judgment, or award, taking her to courts and arbitration hearing rooms across the country, illustrating her versatility and national reputation.

Although, as a Las Vegas native, Amanda's heartfelt commitment is to the local community, which is evident in her pro bono work. She volunteers with the Children's Attorneys Project, providing a voice for children in foster care and participates in the "Ask-a-Lawyer Program," offering free legal advice.

Amanda believes the true measure of success is not what's on your resume but what you have given back, "When you help people without expecting in return, it all comes back to you tenfold."

Melanie Christensen

Owner & President, A Better Solution and Home Care Summerlin

Being a stay-at-home mom for about 30 years, Melanie Christensen said she never imagined that one day she would run her own business. But the experience of opening A Better Solution and Home Care Summerlin has reaffirmed her belief that hard work and positivity can make anything possible.

"These are the lessons I want to pass on to my own children that life may not always be easy, and you can either give up or keep working until you get to a better place," said Melanie.

"I want our children to see me battle and sacrifice in order to succeed. It doesn’t matter what we are dealing with at the moment. What matters is the direction where we are going and how hard we are willing to work to get there."

Melanie said she and her husband discovered their passion for caring for the aging as they saw a number of family members and close friends pass in recent years. Their business provides excellent in-home care to clients all over the valley. Melanie said while running a successful business is not for the faint of heart, she always reminds herself why she started on this entrepreneurial journey in the first place.

"I just keep my focus on clients and their families who rely on us for care and our staff who are working hard for their livelihoods. They keep us going every day," said Melanie. "Our clients are so important to us but so are their families. They are facing some of the most stressful times in their lives. And if we can lift a little weight off their shoulders, it’s a huge blessing. It really is."

Wendi

Schweigart Founder, Project Marilyn Inc.

"Instead of living a life of obligation, how do you live a life of inspiration?"

This reminder from her late mother is what drives Wendi Schweigart every day.

"My mom passed away from cancer in 2011. She was my inspiration for starting Project Marilyn," said Wendi. "I want to help people, and we do that by combatting period poverty which affects so many women in our community."

Wendi says her mom also leaves behind other life lessons she is passing on to the younger generation,

including her 13-year-old son: Resilience, tenacity, and always remembering that tomorrow is a new day.

Wendi is also the Marketing Director for NDL Group Inc. and the current President of CREW Las Vegas. This latter role is helping to amplify her leadership role among women in her field.

"Leadership isn't about being at the front, it's about empowering others to rise with you," said Wendi. "Through resilience and collaboration, we've learned that true strength lies in lifting others up, especially in the face of adversity."

THE ART OF STILLNESS

HOW TO START (AND LOVE) MEDITATION

I've been meditating since I was 19 years old.  I started with 20 minutes, then increased to 30, and eventually settled at 50 because my mind and body naturally asked for more time in silence. Sometimes finding peace and quiet can feel impossible—enter meditation. Meditation isn’t about stopping your thoughts; it’s about creating space for them without judgment. By practicing mindfulness, you learn to observe your thoughts and emotions from a place of calm, reducing stress, and improving mental clarity. Anyone can learn. All you need is a few minutes a day and an open mind.

Whether you're seeking more focus, relaxation, or emotional balance, meditation can help. Follow these simple steps to begin your journey toward greater peace and self-awareness. If you’re new to meditation, start with 3 to 5 minutes daily and gradually increase the time. Set a timer so you don’t have to worry about checking the clock. As you become more comfortable, you’ll naturally want to sit for longer.

Bring your attention to your breath. Start by taking slow, deep breaths. Inhale through your nose for four counts, hold for four counts, and exhale through your mouth for four counts. If your mind wanders, gently return to your breath without judgment. Then start again–four, four, four.

Don’t resist your thoughts or try to silence them. Instead, notice them without attachment. If you get pulled into a thought, simply notice it and gently shift your attention back to your breath. The goal isn’t to empty your mind—it’s to create awareness and calm. Over time, you’ll find that thoughts lose their grip on you, and you’ll respond to challenges with greater ease.

When you're ready (or when the timer goes off), open your eyes and take a deep breath. Reflect on how you feel and thank yourself for taking this time. Even a few minutes a day makes a difference.

A wedding wonderland and girly getaway at Nobu Hotel Los Cabos

Picture this: Champagne bubbles prepare to dance, the early evening’s soft glow sunbathes honey-toned wood chairs that line the beach, and the ocean whispers secrets in the distance, while my dear friend—radiant as a goddess—says "I do" in a scene so chic it could've been ripped from a Hollywood script. My husband is beside me, my besties are giggling nearby, and I'm plotting how to bottle this magic for eternity. The picturesque wedding at Nobu Los Cabos wasn't just a day of love—it was a masterclass in elegance, a swoon-worthy escape, and a revelation that this slice of paradise, just a hop from Las Vegas, is the ultimate spot for both tying the knot and a fabulous girls' getaway.

My brilliant friend deserves a crown for picking this gem. Her day was a symphony of tasteful opulence and charm—a blizzard of white flowers spilling across every surface, a parade of loving family members led by an adorable flower girl adding the perfect touch of sweetness. The bride floated down the aisle in a dress so elegant it whispered couture secrets, her hair and makeup sculpted to model-perfection, as if the ocean breeze itself had styled her. And the groom? Well, he wasn't so bad himself—his perfectly coiffed hair, stylish ensemble, and confident smile added an impressive sophistication. The reception delivered with a tent of fairy lights glimmering like stars, a champagne tower that bubbled over with bravura, a dance floor saxophonist that glowed in the dark, and a fireworks finale that painted the sky, leaving us all gasping and toasting their genius. They didn't just plan a wedding; they curated an experience—classy, dreamy, and drenched in that effortless Cabo cool.

I'm still buzzing from it all—a testament to why this spot is pure brilliance for lovebirds and lady squads alike. Nobu Los Cabos sits like a sleek jewel against the rugged Baja coastline, a quick jaunt from Las Vegas, yet worlds away in vibe. The architecture—sharp angles softened by natural wood and stone—practically begs for wedding photos that'll outshine any filter. My camera roll is still swooning over the infinity pools that melt into the ocean horizon, perfect for those "just married" or "just us girls" Instagram moments. The luxury here isn't loud—it's a quiet, confident swagger. Private cabanas cradle you in plush serenity, spicy margaritas flow at the swim-up lounge, and the spa is an oasis of polished pampering.

The lifestyle is the clincher. We indulged in openair dining on the two-level oceanside patio at the Nobu Los Cabos Restaurant. The Omakase dinner was a love letter to flavor—Black Cod Miso melting on the tongue, Rock Shrimp Tempura with a crisp flirt of spice, and Yellowtail Tartare with a caviar kiss, all woven with Baja's culinary soul. It's delicate, decadent, and downright divine—exactly what you crave while celebrating. Between the pools, the ocean views, and the food that's practically art, this place turns every moment into a memory worth framing. My friend's wedding was a demonstration of the enchantment of Nobu Los Cabos. From the moment we arrived, it was clear this wasn't just a venue—it was a canvas for dreams. What struck me most was how seamlessly the resort catered to both the grandness of the wedding and the intimate moments that made it special—whether it was the private time the bridal party shared in their luxurious suite, or the latenight laughter with friends around the fire pit.

“The picturesque wedding at Nobu Los Cabos wasn’t just a day of love—it was a masterclass in elegance.”

As the night wound down and the newlyweds danced one final song, I couldn't help but reflect on the perfection of it all. My friend's wedding showed me the beauty of saying "I do" here, and it sparked a craving to return with my crew—because who wouldn't want to soak in this chic, playful perfection? Cabo's calling, and Nobu's the answer.

LAS V EGAS

A WOMAN AT HEART

“Women built this city, and they continue to define it.”

When I was a little girl growing up in Las Vegas, I didn’t see the city the way tourists did. For most people, Vegas was a place of flashing lights, grand performances, and high-stakes glamour. But for me, it was something entirely different. It was backstage. It was behind the curtain. It was in the hands of the people—especially the women—who made the magic happen.

I grew up in a blue-collar family. My father moved to Las Vegas in 1954 at the age of twelve years old to live with and work with my great-uncle, Tom, who was a stagehand at the Stardust.

They worked in the shadows, making sure the lights, the sets, the sound, and the spectacle all came together perfectly, night after night. But it was my great-aunt Kathleen who taught me something about Las Vegas that I’ll never forget.

She was a seamstress at the Stardust. Her job wasn’t just about fixing torn costumes

or making sure the sequins stayed in place. It was about holding everything together. She worked tirelessly behind the scenes, stitching and sewing, ensuring that the showgirls shined under the lights, that every detail was flawless, and that the illusion of Las Vegas never broke.

She was never on stage, never in the spotlight, never the one people came to see. But without her, the show didn’t go on.

And isn’t that just like the women of this city? The ones who built it, sustained it, and kept it running? The ones whose names aren’t always in neon lights but who are the very reason Las Vegas is who she is today?

Tonight, we celebrate them. Because Las Vegas is more than just a city.

I want to start with a question: If Las Vegas were a person, what gender would it be?

Think about it for a moment. Vegas is bold. She’s glamorous. She reinvents herself

“Las Vegas isn’t just built on bets; it’s built by resilient women who make magic happen.”

over and over again, but underneath it all, she is resilient. She is strong. And she holds it all together, even when no one is looking.

Vegas, without a doubt, is a woman.

And tonight, as we celebrate the history of Las Vegas, and the history of women I want to talk about the women who built this city—because without them, Vegas wouldn’t be who she is today.

For me, this is personal. I was born and raised right here in Las Vegas in a blue-collar family that knew the city not just as a place to play, but as a place to work, to build a life, and to provide for the next generation.

I remember growing up dancing at Harry Reid’s fundraisers in the 1980s.  I remember Lance Burton performing at my dance recitals for intermission in the 1980s before anyone knew who he was.

I remember trips to Sigfried and Roy’s house, because my father worked for them, to visit the animals just as they were getting started as Vegas icons at the Frontier.

My family worked behind the scenes, quite literally, making sure the magic of Vegas nightlife unfolded perfectly night after night.

And my great-aunt Kathleen? She was the one who held it all together—just like so many women before her. Her work wasn’t just about fabric and thread; it was about creating the illusion, the dream, the fantasy that people traveled from all over the world to see.

That’s what women have always done for this city.

We’ve built it. We’ve held it together. And we’ve kept it running.

WOMEN BUILT LAS VEGAS

Long before the neon lights, before the casinos and the glitz, it was a woman— Helen J. Stewart—who helped shape the foundation of Las Vegas. She was a landowner, a businesswoman, and a visionary.

Without her, the land that became the Las Vegas Strip might never have existed as we know it.

But it wasn’t just the pioneers. Women were the ones running the schools, caring for families, and working in the

background to make sure the city didn’t just exist, but thrived.

And for those of us who grew up here, we know this firsthand. This city wasn’t just built on big bets and high-rollers. It was built by the hands of working-class families—by women like my great-aunt, who never had her name in lights but made sure the show always went on.

WOMEN ARE THE HEART OF VEGAS’ POWER & GLAMOUR

When people think of Vegas, they think of the showgirls, the entertainers, the lights. And yes, women were the ones dazzling on stage, but they were also the ones making the real power moves behind the scenes.

Anna Bailey, the first Black Las Vegas showgirl, broke racial barriers in entertainment, changing the face of Vegas nightlife forever.

Kimberly Bailey-Tureaud has been a force in amplifying the voices of Black entrepreneurs and professionals in Las Vegas, ensuring that this city’s success is shared by all.

Claytee White, the brilliant historian behind UNLV’s Oral History Research Center and the brains behind the Mob Museum, has dedicated her life to preserving the untold stories of this city.

Shawna Wells, a legacy architect and founder of 7GenLegacy, is ensuring that the future of Las Vegas is built with deep intention, sustainability, and community at its core.

Shelley Berkley, a force in Nevada politics, dedicated her career to fighting for education, healthcare, and the working families of Las Vegas. As a U.S. Congresswoman, she championed policies that shaped the future of the city and ensured its continued growth and success.

Jan Jones Blackhurst shattered glass ceilings as the first female mayor of Las Vegas, proving that leadership in this city isn’t just about entertainment and tourism—it’s about vision, resilience, and community. Later, as an executive at Caesars Entertainment, she became a national advocate for diversity and corporate responsibility in the gaming industry.

WE HAVE WORK TO DO

But while we celebrate the incredible contributions of women, we must also recognize that there is still work to be done.

Because as successful and magnetic as Las Vegas is, it is also a place where women face extreme hardships. As my friend Dr. Christina Vela will tell you, now more than ever, Las Vegas is in the spotlight for the fight against sex trafficking.

These women, and so many others, are part of the fabric of Las Vegas. Because of them, and the generations of incredible women before them, Las Vegas is who she is today.

IF VEGAS HAD A GENDER, SHE’D BE A WOMAN

Las Vegas has been called a lot of things. Sin City. The Entertainment Capital of the World. The City of Second Chances.

But at her core, she’s something else entirely.

Vegas is strong—she’s weathered economic crashes, mobsters, and more reinventions than we can count.

Vegas is glamorous—but don’t let the sequins fool you. Beneath the sparkle, she’s got grit.  Vegas is resilient—she never stops evolving, no matter what stands in her way.

And just like the women who built her, Vegas has never let anything—not history, not hardship, not expectations—define her. She defines herself.

Women built this city. And it will be women who continue the work of healing and building—simultaneously.

So tonight, as we honor these incredible pioneers, let’s also commit to doing our part.

To continue the legacy of resilience, strength, and reinvention that defines not just this city, but the women who have shaped it.
