Josh Blake
European House For Imports
When it comes to pursuing one's life-long passion, Josh Blake is doing just that as the owner and general manager of European House For Imports. He took over this business a few years ago, after working there for over a decade.
“What makes us stand out is our attention to detail,” said Blake. “I am a meticulous person. We don’t see ourselves as better than anyone else, but we try our hardest to make sure that at the end of the day, we do things right.”
That work ethic has helped make European House For Imports a premier destination for auto repair service in Southern Nevada. Located in Summerlin, Blake and his team pride themselves on giving customers the very best service. Their business specializes in European automotive brands and Blake said the secret to his success is treating every customer with respect and integrity.
“I have turned people away before or sent them to another shop if I don't feel we can give them the service that is right for their budget," said Blake. "We believe in treating people right, over anything else.”
He says what has helped his business grow is word of mouth and finding community support, which is critical when times get tough.

Nathan Atkins
The DRIPBar
For Managing Partner of The DRIPBar, Nathan Atkins, he is also no stranger to challenges in his entrepreneurial journey. He and his wife opened their business about two years ago. The DRIPBar, located on West Flamingo, offers customers a variety of IV Vitamin Therapies designed to boost overall wellness. Atkins, whose background is in the technology space, said going into a new industry meant being ready to take big risks.
“Trust me, there are many days when we said we should have bought a sandwich business! Everybody eats sandwiches, it was just a matter of getting them to come to yours,” said Atkins.
But Atkins said he and his wife have a passion for health and wellness, so they pushed through with their dream to open the DRIPBar franchise and offer their clients the best preventative approach to health and wellness.
“What keeps us on this path is having an open mind and being willing to pivot, when necessary," said Atkins. "You need to show up when it gets hard. There will be days when you don't get much momentum, but we keep showing up. That's our secret."

Another gentleman who recently launched his entrepreneurial journey is Dr. Ed Soumi. His new Summerlin-based medical practice, Concierge Medicine of Southern Nevada, combines his passion for functional medicine with the desire to achieve a work-life balance. He and his wife, Elissa, who is a registered nurse, launched their venture at the beginning of 2024. Their mission is to provide every patient with VIP access to the highest standard of care.
"Right now, we are in the trenches because we are building our dream, but my wife and I believe that our commitment to our marriage is the model that we can use to also make our business a success," said Soumi. "It sounds like a cliché, but when we feel overwhelmed building this thing, we look back on all the ways that we never gave up on this commitment between us and now we are living a dream marriage."
Dr. Soumi is a board-certified internal medicine specialist with over 20 years of experience working in major hospitals across the country. Now with his own business, he feels that he can offer personalized medicine with a holistic focus.
As for his recipe for success in and out of his medical practice, Soumi said it’s about taking that leap of faith and aligning your work with your values.
"Remember that this is your personal journey. Don’t compare yourself to other people," said Soumi. "Things can be messy but at the end of the day you just got to do it. You just have to try."

For Jeff Jacobs, CEO of LOGIC Commercial Real Estate, he said he spent over a decade in the corporate accounting and finance world before adjusting to doing part time work in commercial real estate during the big financial crisis in 2009.
"I fell in love with the industry and once the real estate market stabilized, I moved into this field full time and I haven't looked back," said Jacobs.
Today, Jacobs oversees operations for his offices, in both Las Vegas and Reno. His independent and full-service commercial brokerage firm has built a stellar reputation through a dedicated team of skilled real estate professionals who connect buyers and sellers in all kinds of commercial transactions. When it comes to what keeps Jacobs at the top of his game, he said it comes down to good communication and relationships.
"There's so much competition in this business and our clients want to work with people that they can trust," said Jacobs. "We pride ourselves on giving them timely and accurate information that's going to help them make sound investment decisions.”
Jacobs also believes in giving back and mentors students at UNLV, his alma mater. He said it’s important for young people to understand that when it comes to success, it's essential to keep that passion to learn, no matter where you are in your career.
"You need to always be a student of the game," said Jacobs. "As a broker, our job is to be a local market expert, to know the data inside and out, and use that knowledge to educate clients. You need to have substance in everything that you are doing."

Joe Cain LEV
Group
Joe Cain is Partner and Chief Legal Officer for LEV Group. He is also no stranger to a career pivot that he didn't necessarily envision. After Georgetown University undergraduate school, Cain graduated from Boyd Law School at UNLV and became an attorney working for a big business firm in Las Vegas. In 2006, he started doing work for what today has become the LEV Group, and he said the rest is history.
"I never thought my career would end up in the hospitality and food and beverage world, but here we are," said Cain. "I wear a lot of different hats for the company, but I love it. The best part about my job is being involved in the big decisions. I like being creative and helping solve problems that come up along the way."
Cain said overcoming unexpected challenges is the secret to success, especially in his industry. He said you always have to provide the best service for your customers but also have to take good care of your employees, who are the key to any business' success. "Problems come up and you just have to deal with them," said Cain. "You have to improvise and make adjustments and not get bogged down on things that don't matter. You can't let roadblocks stop you in your tracks. You must figure things out and move forward."
"The city has been through rough patches. Stay flexible and know that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel."

Based in Las Vegas, Lev Group now oversees nearly a thousand employees and dozens of full-service restaurants and franchises throughout Southern Nevada and Southern California, including Harlo Steakhouse & Bar. When asked what keeps him going over the years, Cain said it's being excited about the journey and what's to come.
"We are always looking for that next opportunity," said Cain. "I have been in Vegas since 1996 and this town has changed so much. The city has been through rough patches for sure, but you have to keep at it. Stay flexible and know that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel."

EQUILIBRIUM AT WORK
Finding balance between career and personal life can be challenging in today's fast-paced world
ARTICLE BY JENNIFER FLORENDO PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF
The pursuit of success often leads to overcommitment, stress, and burnout. However, maintaining a healthy work-life balance is essential for overall well-being and productivity. Benjamin Durham, owner of Benjamin Durham Law Firm, struggled to find and accept this concept, but he is thankful that he did.
SELF CARE | LIFE + CULTURE
BENJAMIN
DURHAM LAWFIRM

"I started to realize that it was possible to take more personal time and that my business would survive."
For more than 20 years, Benjamin has been practicing criminal defense and attests to the challenges of disconnecting from work and clients' problems. “Yes, criminal law can be very stressful when the stakes are high,” he explained. “It can be difficult to shut off that part of your brain that analyzes and strategizes, but trying to shut off the emotional aspect can be even more taxing.”
Shutting down on a Friday afternoon does not happen so easily for Benjamin. Crime does not stop simply because the clock struck five. A 24/7 town opens the doors for trouble to occur at any time of the day or night, leaving him with an even smaller opportunity for balance. It is a process that he has been working on for years. “It has not been easy, and I continue reminding myself that I need a healthy balance in my life,” said Benjamin.
He started with one step in the process for balance: taking a vacation, and it left him with an eye-opening experience. “I remember the first vacation that I took after a few years of running my law firm. I was gone for a week without cell phone service, and I was stressed about it. Turns out that we had a successful week, and I started to realize that it was possible to take more personal time and that my business would survive,” he shared.
Within the last few years, Benjamin continued to seek balance, even though it was challenging. Friends introduced him to mountain biking and his love of outdoor recreation grew. “Anything outdoors helps to re-energize me and clear my head,” he shared.
Being outdoors is a form of therapy for Benjamin, carving out the time he needs in his schedule, “I mountain bike every Sunday morning and oftentimes CONTINUED >
39 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/REDROCK JUNE 2024
on Thursdays. I get to exercise, connect with friends, and connect with nature,” he said.
The last few years have shown Benjamin that it is acceptable to focus on self-care and that it does not have to be a choice, it can be a balance. “My activities and hobbies are not more important than my career, but I incorporate them into my daily life in the sense that I need them to keep me balanced. That keeps me more focused when I am working.”
Finding the equilibrium is not a one-size-fits-all method but shows that starting with baby steps can lead to giant leaps down the road. “You must make a conscious effort to separate the two. It is not easy,” he explains, “you cannot do it without a great support system.”
Achieving work-life balance is an ongoing process that requires mindfulness, self-awareness, and conscious effort. By starting small and implementing a strategy here or there and prioritizing your well-being, you can create a fulfilling and balanced life where both professional success and personal happiness thrive. Balance looks different for everyone, so find what works best for you and make it a priority in your daily life.

A DAY FOR DAD
ARTICLE BY KIMBERLY BLAKER
HOW TO | LIFE + CULTURE 42
MAKE THIS FATHER’S DAY ONE HE'LL REMEMBER
Fathers play a significant role in their kids' lives. They're essential role models, influence children's self-esteem and school performance, and make great coaches and fun-loving playmates. Once kids have grown and aged, fathers make great friends, confidants, and are there to lend a hand.
Father’s Day is just around the corner, so don’t be caught scrambling for the perfect way to show that you care. Try some of these ideas to show your dad just how important he is to you.
VIDEO SURPRISE
Make a "World's Best Dad" video he'll treasure for years to come. Put on your brainstorming cap for your own ideas or try some of these ideas for your video. Share special memories of your dad, sing to him, read him a poem, or do skits. Get the whole family involved and conduct interviews with each other with dad as the main topic. Don't forget your props such as a banner or collection of his prized possessions, including sports trophies or equipment, to add a personal touch. Most importantly, be sure to let him know just how much he means to you.
KING FOR THE DAY
It isn't every day your dad gets waited on hand and foot. So, offer to be his loyal servant for the day. Bring him coffee and toast in bed; fetch his newspaper; lay out his clothes, bath towel, and mat; be host or hostess and serve him beverages and snacks; clean up after him and anything else to give him the royal treatment.
MEMORIES OF DAD
Buy a scrapbook and create a record of memories about you and your dad. Include photos of special outings, events, and holidays you've had together. Also include other memorabilia such as concert or sporting event ticket stubs, postcards, and brochures. Next to each photo or item, describe your memories of those special times with him.
CONTINUED > 43 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/REDROCK JUNE 2024
A MAN TO REMEMBER
Get your creative juices flowing and write a poem for your dad. You don't need to be a poet to come up with a few thoughtful words to express how much he means to you. Describe the impact he's had on your life, how he's helped shape the person you are today, and what he means to you. Then print it on stationery, matte, and frame it.
MUSICAL MOMENT
Take your father to see his favorite band or performing artist, head to a jazz or blues festival, or pack up some lawn chairs, and enjoy a local concert in the park.
TOGETHERNESS TAKES TWO
Has your dad been putting off the dreaded task of cleaning out his attic, basement, or garage? Give him a gift of shelving materials and brackets, wall racks and ceiling hooks, and storage crates. Then spend the day helping him to get it organized while catching up on old times.
SPORTS BUFF’S SURPRISE
Take your dad for a sporting good time. Play a game of golf, tennis, or basketball, go fishing, or enjoy a paddle around a lake. If being a spectator is more his thing, buy tickets to his favorite sporting event such as a baseball or soccer game, boxing match, or auto race.
WEEKEND GETAWAY
Get in touch with nature and each other on a camping trip for two. Either rough it in a tent or rent a cabin at a state park. Spend your weekend hiking, sightseeing, fishing, boating, playing cards, and taking it easy together.
FATHER’S DAY FEAST
As the old adage goes, the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. So, treat dad to a mouth-watering barbecue. Fix him his favorite: steak, ribs, chicken, burgers, or chops for starters. Don't forget the grilled potatoes or squash, garlic bread or rolls, fresh green beans or asparagus, sweet corn, potato salad, and last, but not least, his favorite dessert.
CERTIFICATES OF APPRECIATION
Show dad you appreciate his hard work by returning the favor. Make coupons that say: "In appreciation for all that you do, dad. Redeem this certificate for a hassle-free car wash by me!" Other favors include sweeping out the garage, mowing the lawn, or any other task he usually handles.
CATCH A FLICK…..OR TWO
Treat your dad to a movie fest. Rent a couple of newly released videos or some of his long-time favorites. Or head to the cinema for a double feature. Whether you take the movies in at home or the theater, don’t forget the popcorn and treats.
A GIFT OF GIVING
Does your father have a favorite cause or charity? If so, why not give him a membership or make a donation in his name? Remember, small donations add up and are always appreciated.

who you bank with matters
Q&A WITH RAINE SHORTRIDGE
When it comes to financial institutions, choosing where to entrust your money involves more than just convenience. Understanding why it matters who you bank with can unlock a wealth of benefits and insights into your financial journey. In this Q&A article, Raine Shortridge, Senior Vice President and Professional Banking Manager at Nevada State Bank, sheds light on the crucial role knowledge and community engagement play in meaningful banking relationships.
RAINE SHORTRIDGE
Senior Vice President, Professional Banking Manager | Nevada State Bank
With nearly three decades of banking experience, native Nevadan Raine Shortridge leads Nevada State Bank’s professional banking team, which specializes in delivering a higher level of financial support to executives and professionals and their families, facilitating their access to financing, banking, and portfolio management. He also helps clients navigate complicated financial decisions and transactions and designs banking plans structured to meet clients’ unique needs.
TELL US ABOUT THE SERVICES YOU OFFER.
Nevada State Bank is a full-service bank that offers personal lending, saving, and wealth management to a variety of consumer, private, and business needs, including wealth management. We believe in customizing your products and services to best suit you through our robust statewide branch network. Our one-on-one Relationship Banking philosophy helps us stand apart by offering a dedicated Relationship Manager to each of our clients.
FINANCIAL BUZZ | FINANCE + LEGAL SERVICES 48
WHY DID YOU PERSONALLY GET INTO BANKING?
I started as a part-time teller in high school at a local bank that just happened to be located right across the street from my school. I was able to stay in banking throughout high school and college since the role provided great flexibility and growth opportunities. The idea of banking and finance always intrigued me, so it ended up being a natural fit.
WHY DO YOU ENJOY WORKING AT NEVADA STATE BANK?
I really enjoy the culture, especially the relationships I have built with colleagues and being active in our community. Banking can be a challenging industry, so I’m always learning and mentoring. I have bonded with my colleagues and appreciate the collaboration. As a team, we develop strategies and solutions for our clients’ unique, and sometimes complex, financial situations; doing so with tenured colleagues who I enjoy working with is extremely rewarding.
WHAT CAN YOU SHARE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT?
Nevada State Bank colleagues regularly volunteer and have been helping to make Nevada a better place to live for more than 60 years. My team and I support our community as much as possible, both personally and as an organization. I especially enjoy helping underprivileged people achieve their goals and succeed. I was a long-time board member of the Boys and Girls Club, primarily because I was a club kid myself. I am also on the Access to Justice Committee that provides legal services to those who may not otherwise be able to afford it. It feels great to give back to the community that I live in and would recommend everyone find something that they are passionate about and get involved.
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP THREE BANKING TIPS?
1. Always plan for your future. To do so, you should have a budget, a personal banker or relationship manager, and regardless of where you are financially, a wealth management advisor.
2. Know who the experts are and surround yourself with the most knowledgeable people possible.
3. Don’t guess when it comes to your finances.

WHISKY, AND WHISKEY, FOR GENTLEMEN
ARTICLE BY EVE BUSHMAN
PHOTOGRAPHY BY
EDWARD BUSHMAN
EXAMINING THE FOUR BASIC BROWN SPIRITS MOST COMMONLY ASSOCIATED IN THE WHISKY CATEGORY
In discussions about whisky invariably the questions arise: What exactly are the differences? Are we talking about scotch whisky or all the other types of whiskies? Are some more influenced by the oak barrel they age in, the grain they’re made from, where their water is sourced from, or the master distiller that creates them? That would be yes, on all counts.
As a wine and spirits writer for well over a dozen years, I’ve answered these questions countless times. Let me help you differentiate between the four basic types of brown spirits commonly enjoyed alone and in cocktails.
HAPPY HOUR | FOOD + BEVERAGE 52
BOURBON WHISKEY
SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY
Single malt scotch whisky, (whisky spelled without the “e”) is made in Scotland from malted barley. It is aged for a minimum of four years in barrels that formerly held bourbon and sometimes finished in barrels that were used for sherry, rum, and wine. The taste ranges from smooth to peaty, depending on which part of Scotland it was made.
Bourbon whiskey is predominantly distilled in Kentucky, but it can be made anywhere in the United States. It is mostly distilled from corn, which gives it a taste with both smoky and sweet notes. It gets much of its flavor and color from aging in new, deeply charred oak barrels. Bourbon must be no less than 80 proof but can be enjoyed at much higher proofs.
02
03
BLENDED WHISKEY
RYE WHISKEY
Rye whiskey is made from rye grains, at least 51 percent, and must be no less than 80 proof. It has a slightly sweeter and spicier taste over the other whiskies, though not as popular or as well known. Rye is frequently enjoyed most in cocktails like Sazeracs and Manhattans. Try it alone first, to examine the flavors on their own.
Blended whiskey is exactly that, blended from several single malt whiskies. While single malt drinkers usually prefer the elite qualities associated with single malts alone, blends are the most approachable whiskies, in both balance and price, that you will find. Irish blends were developed before Scottish blends and are sometimes described as sweeter. And blended whiskey can also be flavored, a popular drink for many.

THE HEARTWARMING BOND BEHIND LAS VEGAS’ STEM CELL PIONEERS
A MOTHER'S LEGACY
INSPIRED BY | LIFE + CULTURE 56
A heartwarming story of a mother's love and a son's unwavering dedication has led to hope for so many locals. Blake Youmans, CEO of pioneering stem cell therapy clinic, Dynamic Stem Cell Therapy, fondly recalls the profound impact his mother had on his life.
my games," Blake reminisces. "That's where my drive to be a helper in healthcare started."
As his mother's health declined, her vision remained steadfast. "On her deathbed in 2016, she said, 'I want you to continue this business; I believe it's
"CONTINUE THIS... IT'S THE BEST WAY TO HELP THE MOST AMOUNT OF PEOPLE."
"My mother was always my biggest supporter and my hero," Blake says with pride.
It was this determination that laid the foundation for the clinic's inception. Blake's mother, Simong Youmans, M.D., an emergency room physician, was discouraged with practicing reactive medicine and in 2005 began to pursue natural solutions to help people heal themselves. "She always believed in stem cells; she just didn't think the technology was here until 2014, when we started doing stem cell therapy," Blake recounts.
The mother-son bond was forged through countless moments of shared sacrifice and support. "She stayed up late nights studying but still came to
the best way to help the most amount of people, and I believe it’s why God put me on this earth,'" Blake recalls.
Today, Blake carries on her legacy with the same passion she instilled in him. "Making her proud by continuing this business she left for me," he says resolutely. "Stem cells can help our bodies heal 50 percent faster and regenerate cartilage, tendons, ligaments, muscle, tissue, organs, and even nerves for whole-body wellness."
In a city known for glitz and glamour, this stem cell therapy clinic stands as an example of love, perseverance, and the unbreakable mother-son bond. Blake has continued his mother's dream offering hope and healing and helping so many people in the process.

Robotic Hair Restoration
USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TO COMBAT MALE PATTERN BALDNESS
John McDonald is a well-spoken, savvy, charismatic husband, father, businessman, and pastor. He has no problem taking center stage and speaking in front of people. Because he is in the actual spotlight during worship services, his wife started noticing his thinning hair, especially on top of his head, when he looked at the floor.

John explained, "I started balding, so my forehead became a five head, turning into a six head, and eventually a seven head. My wife would say ‘Your hair is thinning.’ I said, ‘It is, and once it gets there, I'm not going to fight it; I'm going to shave it off.’ She thought I wouldn't look good bald."
John's wife wanted to send him to Turkey, which is known for specializing in hair transplants.“I told her ‘I’m not going to a foreign country to get that done.’ And we would go back and forth,” explained John. “I said, ‘no, it’s okay, we’re going to stick to when it goes, it goes.’”

“Approximately 80 percent of men and 50 percent of women experience hair loss in their lifetime.”
The 44-year-old is not alone when it comes to male pattern baldness.
"Approximately 80 percent of men and 50 percent of women experience hair loss in their lifetime," said Jack Abrams, MD.
Dr. Abrams, a double board-certified surgeon, recognized for successfully introducing the most advanced ophthalmic laser technologies to Nevada for two decades, is the founder of Abrams Aesthetics & Hair Restoration. The impetus to launch this practice was due to intensive research after a family member was suffering from major hair loss. Dr. Abrams wanted to help others.
"Hair restoration that I witnessed in a close family member helped with their self-esteem and self-confidence,” said Dr. Abrams. “It was an incredibly rewarding experience as they regained a sense of control over their appearance."
Dr. Abrams has gathered the most advanced hair restoration technology to provide the first and only ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant center and NeoGraft system in the state of Nevada.
"With advanced robotic technology, we are able to provide the most gentle, viable, and natural hair transplant surgery without using blades or sutures,” shared Dr. Abrams. “With the advent of robotic surgery, hair follicular grafts are transplanted one at a time, in the most accurate and consistent technique using artificial intelligence."
Due to his wife's persistent nudging, John changed his mind about shaving his head and sought out Dr. Abrams for a hair consultation. He knew Abrams because he previously performed John's Lasik eye surgery.
“I said, ‘I trust Dr. Abrams, I know Dr. Abrams, I’ll let Dr. Abrams do surgery on me,’” recalled John.
They scheduled the outpatient surgery for last summer in Abrams' clinic. "I took a prescribed Xanax, they shaved my head, marked it up, and put headphones on me,” remembered John. “The next thing I knew, they woke me for lunch. I ate, then took another Xanax and was done four hours later."
Dr. Abrams explained how the surgery also involved PRP-platelet rich plasma injections. "The results of the hair transplant were enhanced for John by adding simultaneous PRP treatment, which provided essential nutrients for the transplanted hair," said Abrams.
The surgery took six hours and John recovered at home for three days. The hair started to grow about three months after surgery. Now 11 months later, John admits he likes what he sees in the mirror, and so does his wife.
"Regardless of whether we're conscious of how we look, we are still subconscious of how we look. We still consider how we are perceived by others,” said John. “For men being able to have hair ... the reality is about trying to hold onto those two hairs and comb them over to make them cover your whole head, and that's not a confidence builder. My wife tells me my hair looks so much thicker. She runs her fingers through my hair."
John has advice for others who might be interested in a consultation at Abrams Aesthetics & Hair Restoration (www.abramsaesthetics.com). "If you have an insecurity and you're considering it, there's nothing to fear. It's non-invasive, the healing process is really quick, and when they're done, they'll have a better outlook on themselves and be more confident talking to other people."

Perfecting Your Golf Swing
ARTICLE BY DANIEL SCHOWENGERDT
Whether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.
GET ACTIVE | LIFE + CULTURE 62
Get fit for equipment.
01.
If you are buying clubs off the rack, you aren’t giving yourself the best chance for success. Golf technology is evolving every year, and although you don’t need to buy a new driver each year, if you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip. The clubs don’t swing themselves, so don’t neglect instruction and practice, but getting the right equipment is a vital piece of the puzzle.
On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. Generally, a $300 driver has a low-grade $15 shaft that you should change. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.
As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.

Get good golf instruction, REGULARLY.
02.
We’ve all heard someone say, “I should get a lesson sometime.” To be effective, you need regular lessons from a PGA certified pro, not just one lesson. Getting quality instruction from the same instructor can turn slices into draws and give you the confidence to play with anyone on any course. Years ago, golf instructors started instruction with chipping and putting and then graduated to the driver. Now, instructors have been pressured to start with the driver because we all want to outdrive our friends. Resist that temptation! Get instruction on your short game and irons first. My friend regularly outdrives me by 50 yards, but my ball is in the hole first most of the time because of my training and practice on the short game.
Read quality golf books for a higher golf IQ.
03.
There are thousands of golf books, but don’t worry, you only need to read a handful of them to up your golf IQ. Here are some top reads: Short game: Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz
Mental game: Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Bob Rotella Mechanics: Practical Golf by John Jacobs
Ball flight laws: The Practice Manual by Adam Young (only read the first 50 pages)
Practice your short game every day.
04.
You don’t even have to spend time away from your family while practicing if you don’t have a golf simulator. You can practice putting and chipping on the carpet while watching TV with your family.
Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. It gets me up and down from 25 yards out to just off the green.
Instructors have been pressured to start with the driver because we all want to outdrive our friends. Resist that temptation! Get instruction on your short game and irons first.
