Paws, Play, and Growing Pains
I recently got back from Winnipeg after celebrating my nephew’s high school graduation. It was the kind of milestone that deserved every bit of the celebration we gave it. Right before COVID hit, he and his mom moved from Brazil to Canada. The years that followed were hard. He was suddenly far away from his dad, navigating an entirely new country, a new language, and dealing with an isolation no teenager should have to carry. I watched from a distance as he worked through all of it, season after season, without losing himself in the process.
Standing in that auditorium and watching him walk across the stage, I saw a young man who did not just survive those years. He grew into someone genuinely bright, grounded, and full of promise. It gave me a kind of hope that is hard to put into words. It reminds us that even after life’s hardest stretches, people can become more.
When I finally landed back home in Las Vegas, my own little welcoming committee was waiting. Frank, Dean, and Violet greeted me at the door with the kind of unfiltered joy only pets know how to give. It was all snuggles, tail wags, and the simple reminder of what makes a house a home.
This issue is about kids and pets. But really, it is about the people and creatures who teach us what resilience and unconditional love look like. I hope these pages remind you of your own version of that in your life.

Boys Town Nevada Received $20,000 Mental Health Donation
Boys Town Nevada announced it received a $20,000 donation from the Helms Helps Foundation following a community fundraising campaign supporting behavioral health and family services. PET WELLNESS AND CATCH PROBLEMS EARLY
Every pet owner shares the same wish: more healthy years, more tail wags, more playful afternoons, and fewer unexpected trips to the veterinarian. While accidents and illnesses can never be completely avoided, many of the health concerns veterinarians see every day can be minimized, or caught much earlier, with a few simple habits at home.
At Boca Park Animal Hospital in Las Vegas (bocaparkanimalhospital. com), preventive care is at the heart of helping pets live longer, healthier lives. Rather than waiting until a pet becomes sick, the team encourages families to focus on everyday choices that can make a lasting difference.
According to Practice Manager Sara Smith, “One of the biggest things pet owners can do is focus on prevention rather than waiting until something feels urgent. Feeding measured portions, maintaining a healthy body weight, brushing teeth regularly, staying current on preventive medications, and paying attention to subtle changes in behavior, appetite, thirst, mobility, or bathroom habits can make a huge difference. Pets are very good at hiding illness, so early attention to small changes often prevents bigger problems later.”
One of the most impactful ways to support a pet’s health begins with nutrition. Every pet has unique dietary needs based on age, breed, activity level, and overall health. Feeding a balanced, veterinarian-recommended diet and maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the risk of conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, and joint problems. While those extra treats may be hard to resist, moderation often pays off in the long run.
Exercise is equally important. Dogs benefit from regular walks, playtime, and opportunities to explore, while cats thrive with enrichment activities that encourage movement and mental stimulation. Physical activity not only helps maintain a healthy weight but also supports muscle strength, cardiovascular health, and emotional well-being.
Routine wellness exams remain one of the best investments owners can make. Regular checkups allow veterinary professionals to identify developing issues before they become serious.
“ Preventive care allows us to identify changes before they become major medical issues.” says Sara. “Vaccines protect against serious and potentially life-threatening diseases, while wellness exams help detect concerns early through physical examination, diagnostics, and discussion with owners. Preventive medicine often means fewer emergencies, less invasive treatments, and more healthy years at home.”
Dental health is another area that is often overlooked. Poor oral hygiene doesn’t just lead to bad breath. It can contribute to infections, tooth loss, and even problems affecting the heart, liver, and kidneys. Regular dental evaluations, professional cleanings when needed, and consistent at-home brushing or dental chews can significantly improve both comfort and long-term health.
Pet owners should also become familiar with their animal’s normal behavior. Changes in appetite, drinking habits, energy level, weight, mobility, or bathroom routines are often the first clues that something isn’t quite right. Seeking veterinary advice early may prevent a small issue from becoming a much larger one.
According to Sara, “Living in Las Vegas, heat safety is a major concern for pets. Pavement temperatures can become dangerous very quickly, and heat-related illness can happen even during shorter outdoor outings. We encourage owners to exercise during the cooler parts of the day, provide constant access to fresh water, monitor for signs of overheating, and remember that brachycephalic breeds, senior pets, and overweight pets can be at increased risk. We also remind owners that desert hazards such as foxtails, wildlife exposure, and dehydration are important considerations year round.”
Preventive medicine also includes keeping vaccinations current, maintaining parasite prevention year round, and following recommendations for routine bloodwork as pets age. These measures help protect against diseases that are often easier to prevent than to treat.
“Do not underestimate subtle changes,” says Sara. “Pets often show illness in quiet ways long before obvious symptoms appear. If your pet seems just a little different, whether that is appetite, energy, movement, habits, or behavior, trust your instincts and speak with your veterinary team. Early intervention is one of the greatest gifts we can give our pets.”
Perhaps the greatest takeaway is that healthy pets are built through consistency. Small daily choices like feeding nutritious meals, staying active, brushing teeth, scheduling wellness visits, and paying attention to behavioral changes create a strong foundation for lifelong wellness.
Every extra walk, preventive exam, and every moment spent investing in a pet’s health is ultimately an investment in more birthdays, more adventures, and more cherished memories for everyone. While no one can promise a life completely free from illness, thoughtful preventive care gives pets the best opportunity to spend less time in the hospital and more time doing what they love most: simply being part of the family.

My two pugs are more than pets—they’re part of the family. That’s why I started making their food at home, and it’s been one of the most popular posts on my blog. You may be surprised just how easy this recipe is. I add all the ingredients to my slow-cooker to cook, and my dogs love it. If you decide to try this recipe for your pet, please consult your veterinarian. Every dog has different needs based on age, weight, and any health issues. You can even share this recipe with your vet to see if any changes are needed. The ingredients are flexible and can be easily swapped to substitute the turkey for chicken or beef, and even try different dog-safe vegetables. Making dog food at home isn’t hard—it just takes a little planning, and my dogs love it.
Slow Cooker Homemade Dog Food
Ingredients:
• 3 lbs ground turkey (85% lean)
• 1¼ cups frozen sweet potatoes
• 1½ cups frozen peas and carrots
• 1 cup frozen spinach
• 1½ cups uncooked brown or white rice
• 4 cups water
Directions:
1. Add all ingredients to a slow cooker.
2. Break up the ground turkey and mix all the ingredients.
3. Cover and cook on High for 3–4 hours or Low for 6 hours, stirring occasionally.
Note: My dog food was ready in 3½ hours on High. Let cool completely before serving. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freeze for later use.

As the desert heat continues to cover Southern Nevada, families often look for a place where kids can burn energy, parents can relax, and everyone can cool off at the same time. In southwest Las Vegas, Cowabunga Canyon has become one of those reliable summer spots, offering a mix of splashy fun and easygoing spaces that work for a wide range of ages.
Spread across several acres, the park combines high-energy attractions with more relaxed areas making it especially appealing for families. Towering slides and twisting tube rides give older kids and teens their dose of thrills, while the wave pool offers a shared experience where parents and children can enjoy the water together. It is the kind of place where the day naturally shifts from excitement to downtime and back again.

Red Rock Canyon can still be a brilliant escape nearby, even when summer heat rolls in, but making the most of it requires a little planning and a focus on safety. Visit early—before 10 a.m.—or later in the day to avoid peak heat and the harshest sun; mornings and evenings offer softer light for photos and cooler conditions for children and pets. Bring plenty of water, more than you think you’ll need; a hydration pack is ideal for hikes and keeps hands free while kids explore.
Stick to short, well-marked trails if you’re going with younger children and choose routes with natural shade or rock overhangs for frequent rest stops. The scenic one-way
drive allows families to enjoy multiple viewpoints without long hikes, and several pullouts make easy stops for a picnic and photo ops if you’d prefer to keep activity levels low in the summertime. Before Red Rock Pointe Retirement Community became home for Joan Shaughnessy this year, she already felt welcomed because her ‘Gidget’ was also.
“She’s my baby,” Joan says. “I couldn’t be anywhere without her.”

Gidget is Joan’s six-year-old Havanese dog, her companion since she was six weeks old and who lives up to her name in fine fashion, donning dresses and a friendly demeanor up and down the Red Rock Pointe hallways on her daily outings. Something, Joan says, delights residents and allows them to experience some of the same joy Gidget has given her.
“Everyone thinks she’s the cutest dog in the place,” and while that is hard for Joan to argue, she is quick to compliment the other pets who, too, make home and retirement living sweeter. Many take advantage of the gated dog park on site, but because of Gidget’s small size, Joan prefers to let her roam freely in her apartment and accompany her on leisurely walks around the community.

Her favorite activity so far is indisputable: “Bean Bag Baseball–I like that.” Joan also enjoys the dining, joking that perhaps a little too much. “I’ve gained weight since I’ve been here because the food is so good. And they have 24/7 soft-serve ice cream [that] everybody is always stopping and getting,” she adds.

As she continues to settle into her new home, Joan looks forward to immersing herself in more of what’s outside her front door, including outings with new friends (and perhaps even an exercise class or two), all while taking comfort in having Gidget by her side.

This summer also brings something new to the park’s ride lineup: a Fast & Furious roller coaster that opened in June.
Unlike many of Universal’s signature attractions, which rely heavily on motion simulation and screens, this coaster delivers a more classic theme park thrill. In the end, what makes a trip like this memorable isn’t just the rides—it’s the flexibility. You can move quickly or take your time, prioritize must-see attractions or leave room for unexpected discoveries. If you’re visiting during peak season, Universal’s Express Pass is worth considering to minimize wait times and make the most of your day, especially since many of the attractions are relatively short.
But beyond the logistics, it’s the shared moments that tend to stick—laughing your way through Minion Mayhem or spotting familiar faces on The Secret Life of Pets ride. It’s those small, in-between moments that turn a quick getaway into something that feels a little more memorable—and a lot more fun.

For families looking to make screen time more meaningful, Vegas PBS Kids offers a trusted place where curiosity, imagination, and learning come together. “Media can help children learn,” said Dr. Niki Brunetti, Executive Director, Education & Business Development at Vegas PBS, pointing to the long-standing idea behind PBS KIDS: that television, when created with care and intention, can support children’s emotional and social development.
That approach still guides the brand today. Dr. Brunetti said PBS KIDS stands out as “a trusted, non-commercial space where learning is the focus,” with content developed alongside early childhood education experts and grounded in research.
The goal, she explained, is to “spark curiosity and help children connect what they see on screen to the world around them.”
Vegas PBS KIDS also encourages children to use their imaginations, not just absorb information passively. “Our characters are built to support learning through creativity and imagination,” Dr. Brunetti said, noting that they model curiosity, problem-solving, and pretend play while inviting children to participate in the story. She pointed to Daniel Tiger as an example of a character who pauses to ask questions, encourages responses, and uses strategy songs that help children apply ideas in everyday routines.
For local families, access is free and flexible. Dr. Brunetti said families can watch PBS KIDS over the air on channel 10.3, stream through the PBS KIDS Video app, connected TV devices, pbskids.org, and other digital platforms, and explore educational games through the PBS KIDS Games app and website. In person, families can also visit vegaspbs.org/van for community events, take-home learning tools, and occasional visits from PBS KIDS characters.
That access is designed to fit naturally into daily life. Dr. Brunetti said the most effective way to use PBS KIDS at home is to treat it as “a starting point for learning, not just screen time,” and emphasized that co-viewing and co-playing help children make stronger connections. A nature episode, for example, might lead to a walk outside or a related book, turning a simple moment into a deeper learning experience.
The impact is visible throughout Southern Nevada. Dr. Brunetti said that through nearly 200 family engagement events each year, Vegas PBS sees parents leave with “new ideas and greater confidence in supporting learning at home.” Families have shared stories about children learning English through PBS KIDS, potty training helped along by Daniel Tiger, and everyday routines becoming opportunities for literacy and discovery.
“We know PBS KIDS is making a difference because families tell us every day,” Brunetti said. For Vegas PBS, those “aha” moments are the point, and proof that learning can happen in the everyday moments families already share.

ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE
Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.
Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.
Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.
After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”
The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

• 1 cup of plain, unsweetened yogurt (or dogsafe yogurt alternative)
• 1/2 cup of unsweetened, plain applesauce
• 1/4 cup of water or low-sodium chicken broth
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Mix the yogurt, applesauce, and water or chicken broth in a bowl until well combined.
2. Pour the mixture into ice cube trays or silicone molds.
3. Freeze for several hours or until solid.
4. Serve the frozen treats to your dog to help them cool off!

DEVELOPMENT POLICIES HELP
Manage Water Use
For more than a quarter century, drought on the Colorado River has required Southern Nevada to enhance its adaptability and resilience, and our community has risen to meet the challenge—to the point that we’re using less water now than we did when the drought began.
Between 2002 and 2025, overall per-person water use declined by 58 percent, even as the region added 876,000 new residents. This impressive achievement is largely due to residents, businesses and municipalities embracing a wide range of innovative policies and programs developed by the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA).
Included among these policies are development codes requiring new projects to meet strict conservation standards by promoting water efficiency.
• Local municipalities adopted stringent landscape codes that restrict grass in new residential and commercial developments. Grass has been prohibited in new commercial developments, non-residential properties and residential front yards since 2003, and in new residential backyards since 2022.
• In 2019, the SNWA strengthened existing Nevada law mandating the installation of water-efficient plumbing fixtures in
new developments through local codes that require WaterSense fixtures in new construction. (WaterSense-labeled products meet federal specifications for performance and water efficiency).
• Another policy adopted in 2021 prohibits the development of new golf courses in Southern Nevada. Existing golf courses use about 5 percent of our water supply, must adhere to water budgets that limit their annual water use and have replaced more than 43 million square feet of grass—saving 2.3 billion gallons every year.
• The surface areas of new residential swimming pools are limited to 600 square feet under a policy adopted in 2022, which is expected to save about 32 million gallons of water over the next decade.
These and many other SNWA programs, policies, and initiatives have helped our community address the ongoing drought and strengthen water security while continuing to grow.
In Southern Nevada, the smartest way to stretch our limited water resources is to reduce consumptive use—water that is used outdoors and not returned to Lake Mead for community reuse. By focusing on outdoor water efficiency, we can protect our long-term supply, support our economy and ensure water reliability for future generations.
These and many other programs, policies and initiatives have helped our community address the ongoing drought and strengthen water security while continuing to grow.
