Tiny hands. Wagging tails. Endless love.

Some of the greatest loves of my life have had four legs, fur, feathers … and even scales.

This month, we’re celebrating the ones who steal our hearts without saying a word—our beloved pets—and the joy, learning, and laughter that comes from watching the world through a child’s eyes. Whether you’re raising tiny humans or doting on your bearded dragon like royalty, there’s something incredibly special about the love we give and receive from the ones who count on us.

Just last week, I had one of those quiet moments that reminded me how deeply connected we are to our animals. It was early morning, and I was washing dishes from the night before, feeling kind of “blah.” My cats were lounging in my bedroom, and I found myself whispering a prayer: “God, please show me that I’m on the right path … that everything is as it should be.”

Seconds later—no exaggeration—both of my cats walked into the kitchen. I picked up a string and began playing with them, and in that moment, I became fully present. Their playfulness lifted my mood instantly. It was such a pure, unexpected joy—and to me, it felt like an answer. A sign. I truly believe animals are angels on earth, sent to guide, comfort, and remind us to live in the now.

In this issue, we’re honoring the families, the pets, the local businesses, and the everyday magic that happens when love leads. Whether your home is filled with wagging tails, galloping hooves, curious little hands, or the occasional lizard basking in a sunbeam—this one’s for you.

Here’s to pet hair on our clothes, finger-painted walls, muddy pawprints, and the kind of love that transforms us.

With all my heart,

SPLASH ZONE

BACKYARD AND PARK WATER GAMES TO BEAT THE VEGAS HEAT

When summer temperatures soar in Las Vegas, families can turn their own backyards or neighborhood parks into refreshing playgrounds with simple, creative water activities. Water balloon fights are a classic favorite—just be sure to use biodegradable balloons, set clear boundaries, and encourage gentle throws to keep everyone safe. For extra fun, try water relay races: kids can dash with cups or sponges full of water, racing to fill a bucket before their teammates.

A slip and slide, made from a plastic tarp and a garden hose, offers hours of laughter—just check for rocks or debris to prevent bumps and bruises. Sprinkler runs are another easy way to cool off; set up a rotating sprinkler and let kids dash through the sprays. For a creative twist, try sponge tag or set up a “car wash” obstacle course with pool noodles and buckets.

These backyard and park water games keep kids active, cool, and smiling—all while making the most of summer’s sunniest days.

PLANNING, INSURANCE, AND FINANCIAL LESSONS FOR FAMILIES

MONEY-SMARTRaising Money-Smart Kids for Life

Every parent dreams of giving their children a bright, secure future. But in a world where financial challenges can arise unexpectedly, teaching kids about money—and planning for their long-term financial well-being—has never been more important. From setting up trusts and savings plans to choosing the right insurance, the steps families take today can shape their children’s opportunities for years to come.

EXPERT GUIDANCE FOR FAMILIES

To help parents navigate these crucial decisions, we spoke with two experts: Delwyn E. Webber, Esq, Estate Planning Chair at Jones & LoBello, and Daniel Mitchell, Investment Professional at Pharus Financial & Insurance Solutions. Both offered practical advice for

building a foundation of financial stability and teaching children the values and skills they’ll need for lifelong success.

ESTATE PLANNING: BUILDING A SAFETY NET

According to Delwyn E. Webber, the most important legal step that parents can take is to have an up-to-date estate plan, anchored by a properly funded family trust.

“A family Trust can provide a structured plan for distributing assets, avoiding probate, and distributing timely inheritance for beneficiaries,” Delwyn explains.

“A Trust allows the Trustor(s) to control how and when assets are distributed, even after their death, and provides flexibility in managing those assets according to the specific terms of the Trust.”

KIDS FOR LIFE

MONEY-SMART

Delwyn emphasizes that parents can set restrictions on when and how children access their inheritance, especially if they are minors. “The most common examples would be to have the nominated Successor Trustee hold the children’s funds in Trust until the respective child attains a certain age; however, the Trustor can give the Successor Trustee discretion to use those funds for the children’s health, education, maintenance and support, until such time as the child has attained a certain age,” she says.

Beyond trusts, Delwyn recommends naming guardians in estate plans to avoid lengthy court processes and ensuring that assets not owned by a trust have “payable upon death” beneficiaries. For families thinking ahead to education, “making contributions to a 529 plan can be a strategic part of estate planning and can offer substantial tax advantages,” she adds.

TEACHING FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY EARLY

But estate planning isn’t just about documents—it’s also a chance to teach kids about money. “Make financial literacy a family affair,” Delwyn advises. She suggests giving children a weekly allowance for chores, gradually increasing the amount and spacing out payments as they grow. “If a child spends the entire allowance right away, refrain from giving them an advance,” she

notes, encouraging parents to let kids learn from experience.

Delwyn also recommends dividing allowance into shares for saving, spending, and even sharing with others or donating to charity. “Simply talking about money on a regular basis with your children can help them feel more comfortable with financial concepts and develop a healthy attitude regarding spending and saving,” she says.

INSURANCE: PROTECTING WHAT MATTERS MOST

Life insurance is another key piece of the puzzle, according to Daniel Mitchell. He notes that life insurance is also a way to minimize taxation, which can hurt estate plans. “The best time to buy life insurance is when it is decided to build success for the future,” he says. For young families, policies that gain cash value can double as savings tools, helping to fund education or other long-term goals. “Life insurance that gains cash value can be used to save and grow money to fund education and other long-term goals,” Daniel explains.

When choosing a policy, Daniel advises parents to focus on their goals and time horizon. “The goal for the money and the time horizon are the most important factors,” he says. With over 25 years of experience, Daniel practices what he preaches: “I am not only recommending planning, I also personally do the financial planning for my family.”

KIDS FOR LIFE

MONEY-SMART

AVOIDING COMMON PITFALLS

Both experts warn against common mistakes. Delwyn cautions, “Oftentimes a Trust is created but assets are not transferred into the Trust, resulting in those assets going through probate to get into that Trust. If you go to the expense of creating a Trust, you must ‘fund’ it.” She also highlights the risks of not naming beneficiaries, delaying investments, underestimating future costs, and neglecting insurance or retirement plans.

Daniel adds that consulting with a reputable financial planner can help families avoid costly errors and choose the right tools for their needs.

START TODAY FOR A BRIGHTER TOMORROW

While planning for your child’s financial future can feel overwhelming, both experts agree that small, consistent steps make a big difference.

“We cannot stress the importance of having an Estate Plan,” Delwyn concludes. “Schedule a free consultation with an estate planning attorney who can explain the process with you and put your mind at ease.”

By combining smart planning, open conversations, and the right professional guidance, parents can empower their children with the knowledge and resources they need to thrive—today and for generations to come.

The Puur-fect Companion

Why cats make the ideal pet for a modern lifestyle

In today’s fast-paced, always-on world, many of us are craving connection, comfort, and a little calmer. Whether you’re a busy professional juggling meetings and deadlines or an empty nester rediscovering your rhythm, the right companion can bring joy and balance back into your space—and sometimes, that companion has whiskers.

Let’s talk about cats.

Cats are more than pets—they’re grounding, graceful, and often surprisingly wise little souls who meet you exactly where you are. Independent, affectionate, and attuned to energy, cats make the ideal addition to a modern lifestyle because they don’t demand your schedule—they adapt to it.

THE EMOTIONAL BENEFITS OF FELINE COMPANIONSHIP

The quiet presence of a cat can bring instant peace. There’s something magical about their ability to soothe stress and ease anxiety—whether they’re curled up on your lap while you work, purring softly beside you at night, or greeting you silently at the door like they knew you needed some comfort.

Studies confirm what many of us already feel: cat owners often experience reduced stress, lower blood pressure, and improved mood. Cats don’t just fill your home—they fill a space in your heart that you didn’t even realize needed healing.

THE IDEAL MATCH FOR YOUR MODERN LIFE

Cats are wonderfully low maintenance, making them perfect for professionals with demanding schedules. No 5:00 a.m. walks, no constant entertainment required. They’ll nap while you’re at work and meet you at the door when you return—as if to say, “Where have you been? I missed you … kind of.”

Their sense of independence is balanced by their deep loyalty. And when they choose you, you feel it.

Dr. Daffara at Trailwood Cat Hospital agrees: “Cats are intuitive companions. They’re not just pets—they’re emotional barometers, especially good for people navigating stress or major life transitions.”

ADOPTED AND ADORED: THE BEAUTY OF MIXED-BREED CATS

While purebred cats can be wonderful, many of the most affectionate, playful, and resilient companions I’ve ever met are mixed-breed cats—the kind we find at local shelters and adoption centers.

These kitties are often overlooked for not being “fancy,” but they are anything  but  ordinary. Every mixed-breed cat comes with their own one-of-a-kind personality, quirks, and charm. There’s also something incredibly special about giving a cat a second chance at life—and having them give  you  unconditional love in return.

Adopting a rescue cat not only changes their life, but also it changes yours. You become part of their story, and they become part of yours. That bond runs deep.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT CAT FOR YOU

Every cat has a different personality—some love to follow you around the house and talk, like my Frank, others prefer to nap peacefully nearby and watch the world go by. It’s important to choose one that suits your lifestyle and energy.

If you’re someone who travels occasionally or works long hours, look for a calm, independent cat who is content to nap the day away and greet you with love when you return.

If you’re craving connection and interaction, opt for a more social or vocal kitty.

Dr. Daffara suggests spending time with cats at the shelter to observe their temperament. “Don’t choose a cat based on looks alone,” she says. “The best match comes from feeling a connection—and listening to your gut.”

CARING MADE SIMPLE

Cats don’t ask for much—fresh water, quality food, a cozy space, a clean litter box, and your affection. But wellness visits are key. Dr. Daffara emphasizes that even indoor cats need annual checkups, dental care, and preventive screenings to live long, healthy lives.

Many adopters are surprised to learn that mixed-breed cats tend to be healthier and more adaptable due to their diverse genetics, which is another bonus of adoption!

THE COMPANIONS YOU DIDN’T KNOW YOU NEEDED

Cats are there for the quiet mornings, the hectic afternoons, and the peaceful nights. They’re there for the in-between moments—when you’re still in your robe, sipping coffee, wondering what comes next.

They don’t rush you. They don’t require perfection. They just show up—with a soft paw, a purr, or a stretch across your keyboard—and remind you to breathe.

Whether you fall in love with a playful tabby, a soulful black kitty, a snowy white beauty, or a rescued mixed-breed cat with a crooked tail and a big heart… know this: the puur-fect companion might be waiting for you right now.

So, if you’re ready to welcome love, healing, and a little everyday magic into your life, visit your local shelter. The best friendships often begin with a quiet meow.

ANYONE CAN BE A SEABIRD

BY PAIGE CANDEE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE SEABIRD RESORT

Kids and pets welcome for a lifestyle oriented local-style beach escape

When the Vegas sun starts sizzling, sometimes the only cure is a salty breeze, sandy toes, and a place where your kids and pets are not just tolerated—they’re treated like VIPs. Enter The Seabird Resort (theseabirdresort.com ), Oceanside’s sparkling answer to the family-friendly beach getaway, and just a short drive or flight from the desert. This isn’t your average hotel—it’s the largest beachfront resort to open in San Diego County in half a century, and it’s designed for families, fur babies, and anyone who dreams of swapping neon lights for ocean nights, at least for a weekend.

From the moment you step into The Seabird, you’re greeted by a living room that feels like it belongs to your coolest, most stylish friend. Local artwork, curated by the Oceanside Museum of Art, fills every corner—don’t miss the hand-woven,

thrifted T-shirt installation, a nod to the resort’s passion for ocean conservation and environmentalism. The vibe is relaxed and homelike with a touch of coastal chic, and the staff are genuinely delighted to see your kids—and your dog—walk through the door. At check-in, little guests get to pick a special toy from a wagon, and pups are greeted with tail wags and treats.

Rooms at The Seabird are designed for families, couples, or individuals, and even your furry friend. The ocean views from the balconies make you feel like you’ve moved right into a postcard. The delight continues off the front steps. Just a quick stroll across the street lands you on a wide, sandy beach. The resort’s Beach Rambler trailer is your headquarters for all things sun and surf: complimentary boogie boards, chairs, umbrellas, and snacks, so you can pack light and play hard.

Kids will find their tribe at The Seabird’s “Little Seabirds” program, which offers daily crafts like sand art, rock painting, and seashell decorating—plus the occasional bubble party or movie night with popcorn. The pool deck, with its ocean views and heated water, is a favorite for families, and the poolside food and beverage service means you never have to leave your cabana or lounge chair for lunch.

Picky eaters and foodies alike are covered at Piper, the resort’s signature restaurant serving California’s coastal cuisine, features garden-fresh produce, handmade pastas, locally sourced seafood, and more.

As the sky turns gold and the ocean breeze cools, evenings at The Seabird bring a sweet tradition: s’mores kits are available, so families can gather around fire pits to toast marshmallows and swap stories under the stars.

“The Seabird Resort is the kind of place that makes you feel like you belong.”

And don’t worry, parents, there’s plenty for you, too. The Shore Room is the go-to spot for sunset cocktails with a panoramic view of the Pacific, and the spa offers everything from massages to sound baths for a little grown-up indulgence.

Outside The Seabird is walkable downtown Oceanside offering a laid-back, family- and petfriendly coastal vibe with surf shops, quirky boutiques, local art galleries, and plenty of spots to grab ice cream or relax at a sidewalk café.

If you’re craving a date night or a little grown-up adventure, just head across the street to The Seabird’s sister property, Mission Pacific Hotel. This adult-oriented retreat offers elevated retail, a rooftop pool and bar, and a sophisticated atmosphere that’s earned it the number one spot among resorts in the continental US in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards for 2024. Separating the two hotels is the iconic “Top Gun” house, now a pastel-blue landmark where you can snap a photo on a Maverickstyle motorcycle—because why not make your own movie moment?

With surf lessons, local shops and restaurants within walking distance, and a staff that genuinely appreciates your visit, The Seabird Resort is the kind of place that makes you feel like you belong. So next time the Vegas heat has you dreaming of ocean breezes, remember anyone—kids, pets, parents, couples, friends alike—can be a Seabird.

FROM LIVING ROOM TO LIFELINE

How Baby’s Bounty changed the start for Vegas’ littlest residents

In 2008, Kim Amato saw a problem that was both urgent and invisible: too many newborns in Las Vegas were leaving the hospital without the basic supplies needed for a safe, healthy start. Driven by empathy and a determination to help, Kim began gathering essential baby items in her own living room, assembling “Baby Bundles” for families who had nowhere else to turn. From these humble beginnings, Baby’s Bounty ( babysbounty.org) was born—a grassroots effort that has grown into a vital safety net for Nevada’s most vulnerable infants and their families.

Kim’s vision was simple but profound: every baby deserves a safe start, regardless of their family’s circumstances. Early on, she worked closely with hospital staff and caseworkers who confirmed the need was real and widespread. Many families, including

victims of domestic violence, teen mothers, and those experiencing homelessness, were being discharged with little more than the clothes on their backs. “I’m not a social worker,” Kim once said. “I’m just a girl with a dream.”

Over the past 16 years, Baby’s Bounty has transformed from a living room operation into a statewide organization with

CONTINUED >

a 9,000-square-foot headquarters and a reach that extends across Nevada. The nonprofit now runs three core programs: Baby Bundles, monthly diaper banks, and Diapers for Diplomas, which supports parenting students in higher education. The impact is staggering—over 10,000 Baby Bundles distributed, more than 5 million diapers and 10 million wipes provided to over 45,000 Nevada children, and crucial support for hundreds of parenting college students.

Each Baby Bundle is, as CEO Kelly Maxwell describes, “a baby shower in a bag for clients living in poverty.” The bundle includes a portable crib, an infant regulation car seat, clothing, blankets, toiletries, and feeding supplies—everything needed to care for a newborn for the first six months of life. These items are not just comforting; they are life-saving, reducing the risk of infant injury and death by ensuring safe sleep and travel.

The need for Baby’s Bounty’s services has only grown. Diaper need—families unable to afford enough diapers to keep their children clean and healthy—remains a critical issue, affecting more than half of Nevada families with young children. As Kelly puts it, “No family should have to make the choice between paying for diapers or paying for other crucial household needs.”

Behind the scenes, a small staff and a dedicated army of volunteers keep the

organization running. “Volunteers are the backbone of our success. They sort, package, and distribute diapers and supplies to families, and provide hands-on assistance at events,” says Kelly. Community involvement is not just welcomed—it’s essential to meeting the ever-increasing demand.

Baby’s Bounty’s journey from a single mother’s living room to a statewide lifeline is a testament to the power of empathy, action, and community. By bridging the gap for families in crisis, the organization continues to honor its founding vision: ensuring that every baby in Nevada gets the safe, healthy start they deserve.
