HOW ARTIST JANEL RAIHL SPREADS LOVE THROUGH ART ARTICLE BY TAYLOR SHEA WEST | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM TRUJILLO

“I hope people feel and connect with my art.” Janel Raihl cannot remember a time before she was creating art. From her mother supplying her with the freedom and tools to create with many mediums, to her father helping her bring her sketches to life in his workshop. Now, her art can be seen throughout Las Vegas, and various places across the world. Raihl began showcasing her work with David Soto in a gallery in town, which led them both to partner together - soon combining a studio and gallery in 2022. Partnering with businesses, organizations and community projects with the Arts District of Vegas has also helped Raihl spread her work.
“The pandemic brought light to the need for togetherness, art, and community,” said Janel. In January 2021, during the pandemic, Janel was appointed Art Ambassador to Coprael Belgium. Her first official sponsored project was a large heart-themed mural to help spread love and positivity - thus ‘Choose Love’ was created in February 2021. “However, I wanted to show others how they could do it at home. I started inviting people and soon nearly 100 people experienced the joy of painting at once,” said Janel. Recently, Janel painted a mural on The Little Vegas Chapel. “Lipstick colors were picked for kisses, metallic colors for anniversaries, handmade spade stencils and hearts stamps, hand-painted diamonds, and more,” said Janel. “I painted sample designs on canvas and wood panels for them to pick their pattern. They also put hearts on the mural.” The process took two weeks, with the paint all from Belgium. “With my work, I hope to keep the conversations going on our current issues through the voice of the people displayed through art and creating art experiences. The joy, love, remembrance, positivity, and more,” said Janel.

Gestures and habits to make your partner fall in love—all over again
ARTICLE BY KIMBERLY BLAKER

I NSP IR E D BY | L I FE + C ULT U RE
It likely comes as no surprise that keeping the romance alive in a relationship requires effort. But when women feel their romantic relationships becoming stagnant, they often blame the man in their life for not being romantic enough. Yet 44 percent of men say it bothers them "a lot" that their wife or girlfriend isn't more romantic, according to a study of 80,000 participants by Chrisanna Northrup. It turns out that both men and women crave romance. So, try the following to reap the rewards of your partner falling in love with you all over again. Be spontaneous. Routine and spontaneity are opposites. Routine, which typically sets in once a relationship is established, often leads to monotony. But what keeps relationships alive early on is the excitement of spontaneity, which lends itself to discovery about each other and new things. When couples lose their spontaneity, life becomes routine and dull. So, practice spontaneity. Do things on a whim with your partner to awaken the feelings you both felt when your relationship first blossomed. Write a love note. It doesn't have to be lengthy, although it could be. Just a simple "I love you" or "I can't wait to spend time with you this weekend" placed in your partner's lunch box is sure to make their day. If you're good with words, write a poem. If not, borrow one, and leave it on your lover's pillow. Laugh at your mate's jokes and with your partner. No matter how corny your partner's jokes, genuinely laugh when they're trying to be funny, even if you have to laugh because the joke is so corny. Not only will your laughter boost your spouse's ego, but also it's good for your relationship, too. But there's more. Numerous studies, including a study (onlinelibrary.wiley.com/ doi/abs/10.1111/pere.12095) by Laura E. Kurtz
appearing in the Personal Relationships journal, have found that shared laughter brings couples closer together. Look for opportunities to share laughter with your partner. Watch sitcoms, go to the comedy club, hang out with other fun couples, or be silly together. Physical affection. This is so simple and can be done anytime and anyplace. Hold hands when you're watching TV or out and about. Give a kiss on the cheek or walk over and give a shoulder massage. Pat your partner on the behind or walk up and wrap your arms around him or her. There are so many ways and opportunities to show your affection. Make your partner's favorite dinner. The adage goes that a way to a man's heart is through his stomach. The same can be true for women. Go all out and prepare their favorite dinner and dessert. Don't forget the candles, wine, and soft music for a romantic ambiance. Take your mate on a date. Make a plan for something the two of you both enjoy but haven't done in a while. Better yet, plan something special your spouse particularly enjoys that you haven't been keen to do in the past. Then, make the most of it - even if it isn't your favorite activity - and let your partner know how much you enjoy seeing him or her happy and spending time together. Need some ideas? Go to a sporting event, concert, or play; visit a museum; or go golfing or bowling. Pay a compliment. Everyone loves a compliment, especially from a significant other. Tell him how his blue shirt brings out his dreamy, blue eyes. Compliment her new haircut. Or let him know how much you appreciate his handyman skills. Look for genuine reasons to compliment your partner, often. Give a gift. Men don't place as much importance on receiving gifts as women. Still, it can be a very romantic and meaningful gesture when

done out of the blue regardless of gender. Look for something the other will love such as tickets to a game, reserved tickets for the next movie in a beloved series, or something useful for their favorite hobby or sporting activity. Show your unconditional love. Women, in particular, often fall for and marry men with the idea they can “fix him.” Over time, this results in constant badgering to change, wreaking havoc on romantic feelings. Learn to accept your partner's shortcomings, and love them unconditionally. You'll likely see your partner's romantic side shine through again. Spoon. Cuddle before falling asleep and when you wake up. It'll make you both happier and improve your
relationship because of the endorphins it releases, particularly oxytocin, the love hormone. Say 'I love you' in a deep and meaningful way. During a romantic moment, say something you really mean, such as, "You're my soul mate," "I want to be with you forever," "You make my life whole," or whatever you honestly feel for your mate. Give a massage. Both men and women enjoy getting pampered. Give a foot or back massage, or give your partner a full body treatment. Massage also increases oxytocin. So, it can improve the romance in your relationship.

“Every festive occasion usually starts with bubbles, and I like my guests to be greeted with a glass of something sparkling when they walk in the door.” I recently met a woman who was planning a wine and charcuterie party; each guest was bringing a board and a bottle of wine and I made some suggestions on how to pair the wine with the food. It got me thinking how fun that would be – a bring your own anything - for an all-girl party for Galentine’s Day, or a couples’ Valentine’s Day party. Either way, here are some ideas to glam and romance it up.
KNOW YOUR GUESTS’ PREFERENCES
Keep in mind that you should discuss preferences with your guests before the night of your party. If the majority, male or female, prefer one variety of wine to another then stick with that. When my white-wine-loving gal pal had me lead a tasting in her home, with all females, she was very unhappy when all of her guests brought red wine! So, please talk to your guests first about what kind of wines they like before planning your party. Now, let’s get started.
BUBBLES
Every festive occasion usually starts with bubbles, and I like my guests to be greeted with a glass of something sparkling when they walk in the door. Because I don’t want to wash glasses all night, I explain that the best way to detect aromas and flavors from a sparkling wine is to enjoy it in a regular wine glass.
PAIRING
If you’ve asked your guests to bring one bottle of wine and a dish to share, suggest that they pair them. One half of the couple can pick the wine, while the other half has to find the pairing. So, say a guest wants to bring a favorite Cabernet Sauvignon, a typical pairing for that particular wine can be found via a simple
38
H AP PY H OU R | FO O D + BE VE RAGE
Google search. For me, I invested in a great book, What to Drink With What You Eat by Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg. And if you are going to do pairing parties often, I can’t suggest a better resource. Now, to begin, start with the lighter wine pairings first. For example, after your sparkling, next would come a white, then later your reds. If you have multiples of either white or red start with the bottles that have the least alcohol. Prompt guests to pour tastes, not full pours, so that nothing is wasted. Provide pourout buckets for unwanted wine. Then, while you are enjoying your pairings, prompt your guests to describe how the wine, or the food, changes when combined. Of course, you can just drink and eat! If you do want to challenge your guests, have them vote on which couple’s pairing was the best and why.
FINALE GAME: WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO YOUR PARTNER OR GALENTINE
While the wine starts to do its trick, aka you are feeling relaxed, see if your couples/ Galentines want to play a simple game. Put everyone’s name into a bowl, and whichever name is drawn that person has to say what it was that attracted him or her to their partner or Galentine. Take turns choosing a name from the bowl. This game forces out a sweet memory from your partners and a cheers – literally or figuratively - to that memory! Empowering Local Youth Through New Skills HOW WHALER’S CREATION IS TRANSFORMING FUTURES
Juan, an 18-year-old who dropped out of high school due to personal challenges, found hope in a job training program. He learned basic computer skills, was able to secure an entry-level customer service position, and now can pay rent and live on his own. Juan’s life story epitomizes the transformative impact of WHALER’s Creation, a 501(c)3 non-profit advocating for foster and adopted parents while offering media arts job training to older teens and young adults. Founded in Washington, D.C., the organization began with ‘History on Stage,’ a platform enabling older teens to express themselves through arts training. From writing to directing, these productions not only showcased immense talent but also educated communities about fostering and mentoring. Over time, thousands of young people have acquired performing, media, and culinary job skills. Comprising a diverse Board of Directors, volunteers, and professionals, WHALER’s Creation champions the belief that every child deserves a nurturing family bond, regardless of its nature. Youth in foster care often seek familial connections urgently, and the organization stresses the community’s role in guiding vulnerable children toward productive adulthood. Foster parents, adoptees, mentors, and professionals advocate for and provide lifelong connections to these youth. Teenagers, at a crucial juncture in life, require support systems. this need and offers job training programs critical for their success. With an emphasis on vital workplace skills such as communication, teamwork, and time management, these programs equip teens with practical experiences. Success stories like Sarah’s, who secured a full-time position after participating in the program, reflect the program’s impact. The ‘earn as they learn’ model underlines the program’s importance for older teens and young adults, promoting self-sufficiency. Donations play a pivotal role in sustaining and enriching these youths’ lives. WHALER’s Creation invites caring individuals to sponsor a youth or make donations via their website, www.whalers-creation. us. These aspiring young individuals seek a helping hand, not handouts, to carve their futures. Join hands with WHALER’s Creation and become a part of transforming these remarkable young lives. • Grab a wooden bowl, some acrylic paint, and a brush. • Hand paint some paint on one section of the bowl. • Let the first coat dry and paint another two to three coats of paint until you’re happy with the result. • Let the paint fully dry. • I wanted my gold leaf paper to overlap the paint for a layered look, so I took a paint brush and painted some Mod Podge in an overlapping pattern. • Once the Mod Podge gets tacky, use your hand to apply the gold leaf and accompanying wax sheet. • Push the gold leaf onto the tacky glue, then remove the top layer of paper. • Use your fingers to gently push the gold leaf onto the glue a little further. • Next, use the golf leaf brush to smooth over the whole area and gently wipe away any excess gold leaf. Pay extra attention to the edges. • Next, smooth the gold leaf section as much as possible, but don’t worry about any imperfections. The organic look of the gold leaf being imperfect gives the piece character. • Next, work your way to the outer edge. • Once the gold leaf is perfected, gently brush over the leaf with some Mod Podge to seal it to the bowl. • Let it completely dry and enjoy!

Lavender Bath Salt Blend what you need 16 ounces Bokek Dead Sea Salt 20 drops lavender essential oil
what you do In a mixing bowl, add drops of the essential oil to the bath salt and mix well; store in a glass jar. Add 1/3 to 1/2 cup of the scented salts to a bath for a relaxing experience. SeaSalt.com
From-Scratch Pasta
what you need
Yield: 1 pound
2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 4 large eggs
what you do 1. Mound the flour in the center of a work surface with a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and beat with a fork until smooth, then work flour into eggs with the fork. Use a bench scraper to work in the rest of the flour a little at a time. When the flour is incorporated, form the dough with your hands into a rounded mass for kneading. Lightly dust your workspace with flour and knead dough about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough with a bowl or plastic wrap and rest 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight. 2. To roll by hand, flour a clean work surface. Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent. 3. To cut by hand, lightly fold sheets one at a time into thirds and cut to desired thickness. Recipe from MarthaStewart.com.

ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS
Reservations For Two Dreamy destinations for couples looking to get away.
Finding a life partner just might be easier than finding someone you can travel with. Pace, patience and priorities all matter when organizing itineraries, straddling time zones and navigating new places. Do you like languid mornings with room service, wide sandy beaches and white-glove service? Or, do you prefer watching the sunrise in hiking boots, launching into eye-opening excursions and digging to find that hidden gem of a restaurant that serves local food to locals? When the stars align, both partners have an affinity for generally the same kind of vacation, or are willing to compromise. Enjoying travel with your mate is the icing on the (wedding) cake. Here are a few ideas for fabulously romantic getaways. Bon Voyage!
Traveling can be as stressful as it is sublime. Exhausting as it is inspiring. Traveling as a couple requires additional planning and communication with a healthy dose of patience. Much like marriage! But, waking up in a faraway place, exploring unknown terrain together and leaving your routine and all its trappings behind can be therapeutic. You both can take on new roles and release tired habits.
1
Write new vows over lunch or take a random nap because you can.
2
Share planning and talk about your goals for the trip. Do you want to completely unplug or will one of you need excellent wifi to call into a few meetings?
3
If you’re parents, consider setting boundaries for texting and phone calls so you can put the phone away and immerse in one another. Let the kids know you will be checking your phone at a certain time each day (and stick to that). Let the grandparents or caregivers handle the day to day drama.
4
Take turns charting a course for the day. On day one, you check museum opening times, get the timed tickets and find a nearby spot for a healthy lunch. On day two, you sit back and let your partner call the Uber and source out the perfect shopping district, walking distance to a park. Enjoy the ride, either way.
