Ladies!
In May, we present to you our Ladies’ issue! We have some pretty amazing women in our community, and I have been very fortunate to meet a lot of them through community engagement and events.
As women, we can take on numerous roles and wear many hats simultaneously. We are daughters, sisters, friends, wives, girlfriends, professionals, and mothers. Phew! It can be exhausting being a woman. It can also be very rewarding because one thing that we often excel at is connecting to others and being vulnerable.
When women come together, we create magic and often generate such a special and strong bond that there is no stopping us from reaching our goals. And there are many organizations in town that you can join to do so.
This month we bring you inspirational stories about trailblazing women and young women thirty and younger that are already successful entrepreneurs. We share self-care and financial tips. And make sure to check out our celebratory gifting article.
I’m excited to share that I have created an exclusive event for women who “Rise Empower Dream” (RED) and will hold a luncheon on May 11th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Pepper Club inside the ENGLiSH Hotel in the Arts District. The event will benefit two local nonprofits, the B.E. A S.H.E.R.O. Foundation and Angels of Las Vegas. For more information, go to riseempowerdream.com and see how you can attend or be a part of our inaugural luncheon, meet incredible women in our community, and have fun while supporting two very important causes.
Remember to support our local advertising businesses, and follow us on social media for more interesting content.
From my heart to yours,
May 2023

The Perfect Upgrade
ELEVATING WOMEN TO ELEVATE HUMANITY
career development strategy and leadership skills education.
James, a Harvard Law School graduate and lawyer by profession, says we need WLC now more than ever. “The job of a leader is harder than it has ever been before as organizations face unprecedented crisis and change. There’s a new challenge every day.”
HOW ONE LOCAL HARVARD-EDUCATED LAWYER BECAME A CHAMPION FOR WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT
ARTICLE BY STACEY ESCALANTE PHOTOGRAPHY BY CASHMAN PHOTO
Picture Las Vegas in early fall when the weather is still warm, the kids are back in school, and women from all walks of life descend upon the MGM Grand Conference Center to invest in their own leadership education. For two days, women (and some men) are surrounded by highly accomplished women who serve as role models focusing on practical, actionable steps for developing competencies and skills in leadership.
The Women’s Leadership Conference, known as “WLC,” debuted in 2007 but at that time was called The Women of Color Conference. It was started by a collaboration of diverse women from the ethnic chambers of commerce and the MGM Resorts corporate responsibility team to share common experiences and overcome workplace and community impediments.
Phyllis A. James, then MGM Resorts Chief Diversity and Corporate Responsibility Officer, took over the conference in 2010, changed its name to WLC, and refocused the conference to making women from all communities more competitive for advancement through lifelong
James understands what it’s like to be at the top, as the first African American partner at her former top-tier corporate law firm, the first woman appointed City of Detroit Corporation Counsel, and the first African American female executive in a Las Vegas Strip C-Suite. And she also knows what it’s like to be an entrepreneur. In 2019, James created a 501(c)3 called FWLE-the Foundation for Women’s Leadership and Empowerment. The nonprofit provides affordable, high-quality leadership education (primarily for women) all year long, including WLC, the signature event in the fall.
Some of the core issues addressed at WLC include the following:
1. The aspiration gap — James says women don’t see themselves as potential leaders because they don’t see people who look like them in dominant roles. She says showcasing accomplished women on stage at WLC supports the theory that ‘if you see it, you can be it.’
2. The skills gap — James says building fundamental leadership skills boosts qualifications, promotability, and self-confidence.
3. The networking gap — James says building a network of beneficial relationships can give you a competitive edge in taking your career and your net worth to the next level. WLC provides a safe space to practice networking skills.
LOCAL LIMELIGHT | LIFE + CULTURE
28
Over WLC’s 15-year span, the lineup of prominent, successful women leaders spotlighted on its main stage is quite impressive. The list includes Suze Orman, Soledad O’Brien, Lisa Ling, Nelly Galán, and many more.
WLC is a labor of love for Phyllis A. James, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. She admits she’s cut from a different cloth because of her specialized background and training but says she had to work twice as hard as an African American woman at every stage of her career.
She emphasizes, “Perseverance is essential. There may never be an ending (to her crusade), but on the journey we can build better work cultures, better businesses, and a better society.” And James loves this quote from Coretta Scott King, “Women, if the soul of the nation is to be saved, I believe that you must become its soul.”
WLC 2023 will take place on September 18 and 19, 2023, at the MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas. Register and learn important conference updates at http://www. fwle.org/conference.

WOMEN CONNECTING, GIVING AS ONE
Maureen Romito
“I’ve made many efforts over the years, but let’s face it, my last name isn’t Gates, Buffet, or Wynn," she explains. "How could I personally give enough to truly make a significant impact on the challenges facing our community? That’s when I discovered collective giving and the Impact model."
Maureen Romito has called Las Vegas "home" for 45 years. The retired human resources director is a vibrant, passionate, go-getter and world traveler, but when she's home in Southern Nevada, she's working on her baby, who turns 10 this year. Romito started Impact Las Vegas in 2013. It's a collective giving platform for like-minded women.
Impact Las Vegas consists of women who donate $1,000 each year, and 100 percent of membership donations are pooled to fund an annual "transformational" grant to a local nonprofit in one of five focus areas: culture, education, environment, family, or health and wellness.
The group started with 13 members and has grown to 95 over the last decade. The goal is to exceed more than 100 members over the next year, which means a giving milestone of $100,000. New member, Jody Lenzie, has lived in Las Vegas since 1974 and said, "I've watched the city grow, and I'm more aware of organizations

trying to better our community. When I learned about Impact, I was thrilled to join a movement created to support these organizations. I'm proud we can make our city better with a lump sum donation.”
In February, 90 nonprofits submitted letters of inquiry to the group. Impact members evaluated the letters and whittled the list to 17, who were then invited to submit a full grant application. The women work together and the list is narrowed down to four semi-finalists, then down to two. Each member of Impact casts a vote to select the winning recipient. The grant will be awarded in June 2023.
“Not only do we get to see exactly how our money is used and witness the impact it has, but we also learn more about our community challenges and meet inspiring nonprofit organizations we’ve never heard of,” says Romito.
Last year Impact Las Vegas granted $83,000 to Kline Veterans Fund's “Homes for the Brave” program to address the issue of homelessness among veterans living in Clark County. Based on the $1,000 average request for assistance from local vets, the Impact Grant Award will help 83 families with urgent housing needs during the next two years.
The list of winners also includes Nevada Child Seekers, Girls on the Run, Roseman University, and many more. This year is monumental because the tenth grant award will be the largest ever.

Female developer of The English Hotel and The Pepper Club shares vision for success
INSPIRATION FROM THE GROUND UP
ARTICLE BY PATRANYA BHOOLSUWAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY FUYI PROPERTIES
Over the last few years, the Las Vegas Arts District has grown in popularity among both locals and tourists alike. There are new restaurants, bars, and art galleries bringing a different vibe and energy to this once-run-down neighborhood. And at the heart of it all is a boutique hotel that is the pride and joy of one woman who has been at the center of this project from the very beginning.
"As a long-time Vegas resident, I knew we wanted to work in the Arts District because it has so much potential," said Weina Zhang, the Founder and CEO of Z Life Co, the real estate development company behind The English Hotel along with its anchor restaurant, The Pepper Club by four-time James Beard award-winning celebrity Chef Todd English. "As a developer, we look for opportunities that are going to serve the next generation user. This area is different than anywhere else in Las Vegas and holds a unique value to a growing market that is searching for an authentic experience."
To help create that experience, Zhang is backed by a team at The English Hotel that includes many executive-level women. This includes her partner at Z Life, Anna Olin.
This team, according to Zhang, has been instrumental in the ground-up construction of this property that opened its doors to the public in February of 2022.
"This is the Arts District's first Boutique Hotel, what I see as our ‘proof of concept,’ said Zhang. "When I first moved to Las Vegas nearly 20 years ago, I never went downtown. Then I moved away to San Francisco and New York, and I brought a lot of what I learned and saw back here to this city. I want to create a different kind of community in the Arts District, and I have had the best team to help launch this project with me," said Zhang.
Zhang, who was born and raised in China, said it's not always easy being a woman working in a field dominated by men. But she said what she had to do to succeed was not focus on being a "woman" but instead on being the "hardest working person” in the room.
"You have to show your work. You have to work harder than everyone else so that people will take you seriously," said Zhang. "Men, especially, can underestimate you. When people underestimate you, you have to fight harder because then they are not prepared to see what you can do."

CURB APPEAL | LIFE + CULTURE 38
As a women-owned development company, Zhang said Z Life has provided a collaborative and open environment for women at all levels and business positions. Zhang said her partner Anna Olin had been with the company since she was 21. That's when Zhang started her first facade contracting company in Las Vegas to import unitized curtain walls from China. Today Olin is Zhang's right-hand "woman" as their company continues to expand and take on new projects.
"Anna supports my drive and vision, and we are great at challenging each other to keep growing and evolving the business," said Zhang. "We have a number of women in management roles in the operation of the hotel, and they are incredible leaders, not because they are women but because they are excellent at their jobs."
The 74-room English Hotel is just a part of Zhang's vision for the Arts District. She sees the hotel and the surrounding area continuing to facilitate the tourism growth in the Arts District. She said her investment in this neighborhood is long-term in this city where she now calls home.
"I want a place where people can work, play, and have fun. Most importantly, a community that is safe with everything from a co-working space to a farmers market to all kinds of amenities. A place where you can get to everything in less than 15 minutes. What better city
to start this than Las Vegas?"
Along with building a company that supports female entrepreneurs, Zhang has invested her time, energy, and money into the young generation in the city where she grew up in China. In 2007, she set up the Zetian Children's Foundation with the goal of helping girls get an education and change the dynamics of their future.

"When it comes to advice for young women, wherever they are in the world, I would say, never wait for tomorrow," said Zhang. "Never wait for the perfect opportunity or the perfect relationship. That will never work out. One thing I love about working in Las Vegas is how accessible the city is and how they support businesses. We need to be more assertive in our relationships. All it takes is the first step of reaching out."

Q&A WITH THE KINDNESS CAUSE
After realizing her hectic corporate work life wasn’t fulfilling her or allowing her to be the mom she wanted to be, one Vegas woman made a business decision that would change her life while giving back and spreading kindness. We caught up with Mandy Cordia, Founder of The Kindness Cause to find out how her desire to use her talents to make a difference and give back led her to leave Zappos to pursue her dreams of becoming a social entrepreneur.
Mandy Cordia Owner & Founder
The Kindness Cause
Mandy Cordia is a mom of two energetic kiddos and a Midwesterner who’s called Las Vegas home for 12 years. A retail industry veteran, Mandy turned her love of shopping into a full-time career spanning over 20 years. She was a corporate retail fashion buyer for companies like The Home Shopping Network, Dillard’s, and Zappos.com. During her tenure as a buyer, Mandy had worked

with hundreds of brands like Gucci, Tory Burch, Eileen Fisher, Kate Spade, and Free People.
Armed with extensive knowledge of retail and a heart full of compassion, she has dedicated herself and using her talents to create a socially responsible e-commerce business that merges her love of retail, fashion, and philanthropy to support important causes and issues. Mandy launched her purpose-driven business, The Kindness Cause, in March 2022.
An e-commerce site, The Kindness Cause (http:// www.kindesscause.com), gives back to charities easily and transparently through fashion-forward gifts. The Kindness Cause vets and partners with smaller nonprofit organizations for 60-day campaigns to raise funds and awareness for the charitable organization. It creates, curates, and sells fashionable merchandise and gifts themed around the mission of each nonprofit partner, kindness, and positivity.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE KINDNESS CAUSE CONCEPT?
The Kindness Cause came about through my journey to heal and recover from burnout. With the onset of the pandemic, I was one of the "lucky" ones who got to keep my job in retail when many were laid off or furloughed. My job was already demanding, but I was forced to take on additional work and responsibilities that far exceeded my bandwidth. Before the pandemic, I traveled frequently, and I'd joke that my kids thought I worked in New York daily. When I was home, I made it a point to be present with my family, and my kids rarely saw me working. The pandemic changed that; they saw mommy working all day, pulling all-nighters, and working on the weekends to keep from drowning in the workload.
My breaking point was a day I will never forget. I was at home frantically working to meet a last-minute deadline. I heard my 3-year-old son playing in his room, and something he said caught my attention. I got up and peeked around the corner to watch. My son had set up his stuffed animals around his table. He made a computer out of paper and pretended to work just as he saw me do every day. After a few moments, he turned to his stuffed animals and yelled at them to be quiet. He said, “I’m on an important call and need to finish my work.” I cried. My heart was broken. This was not the example I wanted to set for my children, and I knew something had to change.
CONTINUED > 47 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/REDROCK MAY 2023
I didn’t know what that change looked like, so I started with therapy. One of my most significant discoveries was that I had been neglecting my passion for giving back. Life had become so busy since having children that I no longer had time to volunteer.
I started to buy gifts for my friends and family that supported charitable organizations as my way of giving back. The gifts became conversation starters about important issues and a way to learn about different nonprofits. However, it often took a lot of work to uncover and learn about the nonprofit benefiting from my purchase, and the giveback was often vague. As a product person, I didn’t always love the selection offered. There had to be a better way. My many years of retail experience, coupled with my love of helping others, put me in a unique position to tackle the problem.
I launched The Kindness Cause with three main goals: (1) make giving back easy when life is busy by incorporating giving into the things we do every day, like buying gifts for our friends and family; (2) provide transparency around funds donated with purchase and around the charitable organization benefiting from the sale; and (3) create a platform to educate, bring awareness, and raise funds to support the incredible work of smaller, regional nonprofit organizations.
WHAT TYPES OF PRODUCTS DO YOU OFFER?
We sell fashion-forward merchandise that ranges from clothing, jewelry and watches, stationery, home goods, and everything in between. We always offer merchandise that is themed with kindness and positivity; however, the merchandise we sell for our Cause Collections (merchandise themed around a nonprofit’s mission) will vary and change every 60 days based upon the nonprofit partner at that time.
HOW DOES A NON-PROFIT PARTNER WITH YOU?
The Kindness Cause has already worked with many local nonprofit organizations and is focusing on additional local charities throughout 2023. Nonprofits interested in partnering should message us through our website or email customerservice@ thekindnesscause.com

THREE FEMALE-OWNED SELFCARE BUSINESSES FOR YOUR SELF-LOVE JOURNEY
ARTICLE BY KYLA SAWYER
When it comes to self-care, there is nothing more nurturing than taking care of the body that takes us from our bustling days to the end of the night, when we lay our heads to rest. Skincare, massages, and cosmetic treatments are just a starting point on the journey to improving our sense of self-love and confidence.
Cheers Beauty, Acne Clinic Las Vegas by Justina, and Vanity Beauty Boutique are all local women-owned businesses that know exactly how and what to treat for their clients' individual needs. These ladies specialize in their own unique services, all with the same goal in mind … empowering their clients to treat themselves with the care and attention they deserve.
Cheers Beauty is a waxing business run and owned by three women, Mariana Leake, Emily Andrews, and Brittany Alexander. They all specialize in waxing and have a true passion for providing extraordinary service to each of their guests. Ranging from the brows all the way down to the toes, a refined or hairless new look is the end result. Not only have these three ladies been coworkers since 2016, but also they have been friends. Their close bond with one another translates into their work environment, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for the client to relax during their treatment. Cheers Beauty recently celebrated its one-year anniversary and is growing exponentially by creating genuine connections with their clients and delivering exceptional results.
Acne Clinic Las Vegas by Justina approaches skin conditions holistically. Owner Justina Sy is an advanced medical aesthetician and an acne expert. She and the rest of her team at Acne Clinic know how to target problem areas on

HANNAH EASLEY JUSTINA SY
LICENSED AESTHETICIAN AND CEO OF ACNE CLINIC BY JUSTINA
Justina graduated from Euphoria Institute as a Licensed Aesthetician in 2016 and has rapidly established herself as one of the foremost acne specialists in Las Vegas. “We treat acne and other skin diseases, like eczema, psoriasis, and more,” said Justina.

OWNER OF VANITY BEAUTY BOUTIQUE
Hannah has nearly a decade of expertise in Las Vegas’ health and wellness scene. The entrepreneur who originally founded her business as Vanity Body Sculpting in 2012 has since expanded her service offerings for an all-encompassing selfcare experience for her clients. “We provide so much more than just a quality service,” said Hannah.

the skin by providing personalized treatments. Acne — amongst other skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, hyperpigmentation, scarring, and sun damage — are all treatable with their array of services and skincare. They treat these skin conditions from the outside, but they also help guide the client by giving lifestyle, diet, and hygiene tips to help further treatment from the inside. One of the first things people see when greeting each other is their face, and when it comes to confidence, Justina changes people’s lives through her expertise and ability to encourage clients to love their own skin.
Vanity Beauty Boutique is a spa that offers a wide variety of luxurious treatments. Owner Hannah Easley opened her spa as a single mother. She gathered a team of experienced specialists whom each brought their own talents to the table. Microcurrent body sculpting, teeth whitening, and zero gravity massages are just a few of the treatments this boutique offers. By using
safe, clean, and sustainable products, Hannah and her fellow experts provide top-of-the-line services leaving their clients empowered to make positive changes in their lives. Vanity Beauty Boutique’s staff are very versed in their respective services and provide knowledge to the client to create long-lasting results outside of the spa. Upkeep comes with the territory, and Vanity Beauty Boutique is an essential foundation in maintaining the body a client wants.
Confidence is a key ingredient in all three of these businesses, and they want that to translate into their own clients. Changing one’s own life is always something that begins from the inside, but caring for our bodies can be the first step in fulfilling the love we need for ourselves. Ultimately, people have the power to create a life where our bodies, self-esteem, and empowerment can come together, and with the help of these three female-owned businesses, anyone can set forth on their journey of self-love.

“I have suffered with acne for years now. I have gone to many dermatologists and spent so much money. I think, like many, I was worried more about my face then the money at the time. I just wanted to gain my confidence back. Justina helped me remove all my acne, I’m so very happy. I highly recommend this place.”

Thriving at Thirty and Younger
FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS SHARE SECRETS TO SUCCESS
From body butter to bohemian art to beautiful soul food. These are the life’s work of three young female entrepreneurs who are making their mark in Southern Nevada. All of them share one thing in common: they are following their hearts when it comes to crafting their careers.
“I have never had any formal culinary training. I have been doing what I love ever since I was eight,” said Shakeirra Freeman, also known to many friends, family, and clients as “Chef Key.”
“I came from a big family, and it was my responsibility to prepare meals for all of my siblings because my parents had to work multiple jobs. My passion was to cook for people and make them happy.”
Fast forward over two decades, Freeman, who is turning 30 this year, is living her dream as the founder and owner of Keys 2 the Kitchen. This private chef and caterer said her former career in healthcare came to a halt during the pandemic, and right after that, she gave birth to her second child. She needed a way to make ends meet, so she started meal-prepping for her friend, who is a personal trainer. Then in just a matter of months, one customer turned into 10, and her new business had officially begun.
“I am now very busy. I never expected it to grow the way it did,” said Freeman. “I had prayed for this, and to see it happening in real-time, is amazing.”
As a mother of two and a full-time working mom, Freeman said it’s not always easy to juggle everything, but she is driven by her lifelong passion for cooking, health, and wellness. Her older brother had passed away from cancer at a young age, and she said her work now is in honor of him.
“If he had a better diet when he was here, he may have been with us a while longer. I use his memory as motivation to do my best every day.”

“As a kid, I was very creative. I was always designing things and painting, but when I got to high school, I just lost it,” said Beardsley. “I think I just started to follow what I thought was a practical career path.”
Beardsley said she got back her passion for art as she was about to start nursing school. She had just finished a study abroad program in Costa Rica, and during her flight back to the US, she had a long conversation with a nurse and realized where her true passion lies.
“I knew I wanted to help people, to heal them but not through being a nurse,” said Beardsley. “I realized I wanted to do it through art, and my work now is an interpretation of that.”
When she was 22, Beardsley began doing Henna art at First Friday events. Now eight years later, she has her own studio called The Pink House in that very same spot where her artistic career began.
“My studio opened last August inside the Arts Factory, and it has really become a place of love and healing,” said Beardsley, who calls herself a ‘Paint Magician.’ She said she takes pride in doing all kinds of work that brings her community joy, from painting murals to curating and designing homes and office spaces.
“The support from the arts community here in Las Vegas has been foundational,” said Beardsley. “It’s always been hard for me to believe in what I can do, but my community has helped me to see that in myself.”

For a fellow female small business owner, Brianna Grantham, the founder of “Brianna’s Body Butter,” she said she found inspiration to start her body butter business from her former boss.
“I was working at this Vegan Cafe called Simply Pure, and in my free time, I was doing my passion project, which is creating homemade and natural body butter,” said Grantham. “The cafe owner, chef Stacey Dougan, encouraged me to launch this business.
Grantham, now 26, said she started by selling her body butter products on Etsy and has since moved on to selling them at local markets all over the Las Vegas Valley.
“I love interacting with people. That’s why I didn’t want a brick-and-mortar store,” said Grantham. “I want to meet lots of people and create an organic flow. I am transient. I enjoy movement and experiencing new environments.”
Grantham has since expanded her business to sell all kinds of body butter along with other health and wellness products. She said her formula for success is her self-discipline. Grantham said it’s about living a life that aligns with your career goals.
“It’s important to recognize your natural abilities,” said Grantham. “Some things may require more time, effort, and energy. You’re more likely to be fulfilled and passionate if you choose a creative path that feels right.”

THE ICONIC MINT JULEP
With the Kentucky Derby around the corner, it’s time to cheers with the famed bourbon cocktail, the Mint Julep. With a balance of sweet, smoky, and herbal flavors, the Mint Julep has been the traditional cocktail of the Kentucky Derby for almost a century. Each year, nearly 120,000 mint juleps are served over the two-day weekend of the Kentucky Derby horse races at Churchill Downs racetrack. That equates to more than 10,000 bottles of bourbon, 1000 pounds of fresh mint, and 60,000 pounds of ice!
Drinks that are this legendary can sometimes seem difficult to make, but the recipe is actually very easy and requires just a few key ingredients.
INGREDIENTS
Mint Simple Syrup
• 1 cup of water
• 1 cup of granulated sugar
• 4 or 5 sprigs of fresh mint
Mint Julep
• 2 ounces of bourbon
• 1 ounce of simple syrup
• 2-3 sprigs of fresh mint, leaves removed from one stem
• Crushed ice
• Mint sprig, for garnish
DIRECTIONS
Simple Syrup
Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together and stirring for about five minutes. Immediately remove the pot from the heat. Add about five sprigs of fresh mint. Cover and cool. Remove the mint and refrigerate overnight. Can be stored for up to three weeks.
Mint Julep
• Pluck the mint leaves off of one sprig and place them in the bottom of your glass.
• Pour in the simple syrup.
• Muddle the leaves and syrup.
• Add the bourbon to the glass
• Fill glass with crushed ice.
• Stir the cocktail until the glass frosts.
• Garnish with fresh mint leaves.

Make a Memory Book or Scrapbook Together
Before Mother’s Day, go through everybody’s camera rolls and Instagram feeds and choose her favorite photos. Get them printed ahead of time so you can make a memory book. You might just love it so much you make it a yearly tradition.

Plan a Spa Day For Her and Her Friends
Mom will truly appreciate you going out of your way to set her up with a massage or facial appointment. Invite her friends along, too!
Craft the Perfect Playlist
Songs about mothers and mom’s favorite songs can come together into the perfect playlist to put on during brunch or dinner. You can either make it for her or take turns being DJ and alternate picks.
Have a Make-Your-Own Pizza Party
DIY pizza: It’s a craft (depending on how artfully you place the toppings), an activity and a meal all at once! Start with basic pizza dough, then everyone gets to add their favorite toppings. Mom gets the first pick, of course.
Hold a Lawn-Game Tournament
Croquet, cornhole, bocce, outdoor Jenga or horseshoes — what’s your family’s game of choice? Split into teams and drum up some friendly rivalry — while soaking in rays — with a backyard challenge. Make it an annual event, and pass around a trophy to the winner each year.
Visit an Amusement Park
For the mom who’s always seeking adventure, a trip to your nearest amusement park will be a welcome surprise. Not only will you be able to treat her to her fill of funnel cakes and caramel corn, but she’ll enjoy all the rides and attractions her heart desires. If you ask us, it’s a win-win.
Have a Backyard BBQ
Sure, backyard barbecues are often associated with Father’s Day, but Mom loves her burgers and dogs, too, so why should Dad get all the fun? If the weather cooperates, fire up the grill!
Make Something Totally Unique
If you do a DIY craft project, write a poem or come up with a silly dance, you know mom will love it because it is 100% you. No one can one-up a one-of-a-kind experience! You can make them for her and present them to her, or involve her in their creation.
Spruce Up The Garden
Gardeners know that Mother’s Day is the perfect time to start planting seeds. Get the whole family outside and dig in the dirt together. Every time she sees them, she’ll be reminded of the special day — it’s the gift that keeps on giving! Some flowers that are fairly easy to maintain include sunflowers, marigolds and sweet peas.
Make Pottery
Not only will you leave with a one-of-a-kind piece, but you’ll also be able to bond as you explore a new activity.
Head to the Farmers Market
There’s nothing like waking up with the sun and going to the farmer’s market on the weekend. Pick fresh produce and discover new favorites with mom, coffee in hand.
Watch Home Movies
Whether this involves digitizing old VHS tapes or getting video files off your phone and onto the TV, dig into the family archives and host a home-movie marathon. She’ll get emotional seeing how much everyone has grown.
Check Something Off Her To-Do List
Dad knows - Mom has a to-do list a mile long. Whether it’s tasks around the house or a DIY project, find out what has been nagging Mom and help her cross it off her list by doing it for her!

Play a Family Board Game
If Mom likes strategizing, challenge her to a friendly board game competition. (And, no, you don’t have to let her win just because it’s Mother’s Day.)
Pick Your Own Fruit
This activity is especially fun if you have a lot of kids who want to get in on the action. Then, when you all get home, you can whip up a treat for Mom with your selections. (Maybe give her a strawberry in a Champagne glass while she waits.)
Book Her a Weekend Away
There’s no day like Mother’s Day to be impulsive! Book a weekend trip for the two of you at a cute B&B in a city Mom has always wanted to visit.
Complete a Jigsaw Puzzle
Get Theater Tickets
Go to a play or a musical — lots of towns even host outdoor theater events.
Find a puzzle with an image you know your mom will love (or make a custom one using a photo of the two of you) and put it together over wine and snacks. You’ll be amazed at how much chatting you can get done while puzzling. 20

Managing Your Money
Tips from a financial pro for women
ARTICLE BY SHANNA KEHOE
Gone are the days when the standard financial advice for women was, “Make sure you know what your husband is doing with your money.” Today’s women are more empowered and money-savvy than ever before.
So, yes, don’t fall into the habit of allowing someone else to manage your finances without your input. Even if you feel like you’re “just not good with money,” the fact is that you’re probably better with it than you realize — or, at least, you certainly have the potential to be.
Invest early and invest often. The earlier you start investing, the more benefit you’ll enjoy from compounding interest — that is, earning interest on the interest you earn from your investments. Over time, it builds up.
Have a plan. Your financial plan doesn’t have to be a rigid course you follow but rather an intentional plan customized to your goals. Goal setting may be one of the single biggest steps you can take toward financial success. Your goals should dictate what types of investments you make and why.
Get informed guidance from a professional when putting together your financial goals. Though men greatly outnumber women as financial advisors, there are indeed women advisors available who are adept at helping women define and pursue their financial goals.
Las Vegas Native Shanna Kehoe, CFP®, CWS®, is managing partner and wealth advisor with Diamond Wealth Management. As a wife and mother of twins, she understands how a busy lifestyle can prove challenging with each new stage of life, which fuels her passion for planning and walking the journey with her clients.
You can’t have a solid plan for your money if you don’t know what your money’s doing. Getting a budget in place can transform your finances and reveal the availability of funds for investing.
step 1
Add up your monthly income from all sources.
step 2
Add up your monthly financial obligations.
step 3
Subtract your obligations from your income.
step 4
If there’s money left over, decide where that money will best serve you. Paying down debt? Building up savings? Investing for retirement?
step 5
If the sum is a negative number, it’s time to either cut expenses or increase income.
Don’t discount the benefits of taking time to compose a budget. A basic budget can be a powerful tool!
