LIFESTYLE LETTER

Love Local

February 2023 PUBLISHER

Camilla Dorand | camilla.dorand@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Paige Candee | paige.candee@citylifestyle.com

February of last year was my first “solo” issue as the magazine’s new publisher. I got to choose the cover and write my very first welcome letter. This past year has flown by, and I have really been able to fall deeper in love with this wonderful community of ours. There are so many inspiring people who encourage me to be better; to really use this magazine not only to spread love, joy, and positivity but also to highlight the best of local businesses that we have in our backyard. This month we celebrate one of my favorite words: LOVE. This issue is themed ‘Love Local.’ We are all about supporting local businesses and nonprofits so our community can continue to grow stronger. And together, we are stronger. In this issue, you will read about a mobile painting company bringing out the free spirit in you, why we should love and take care of our eyes, how to pick out the perfect diamond, a school that focuses on the love of learning, and so much more. The local businesses that make this magazine possible offer great services and products. I strongly recommend that you show them some love by connecting with them in person or through social media and showing them your love. From my heart to yours,

Lower energy costs | Increased ITC tax credit now 30% of project cost Beat inflation - no increase in electricity cost for life No more worry about peak time surcharges “Solar was something that we were not too interested in until we saw the long term savings, which was $60,000 plus over the next 20 years. I never thought about the fact that we can lock in our future rates at todays cost by going this route. Owning our power source at that point just made sense. Bell did a fantastic job explaining the pros and cons and we def initely made the right decision for our family. The installation and conversion process was super simple and they really took pride in the f inished product. I highly recommend any homeowner exploring this as an option.” -Kimberly I.

NEET DESIGN GROUP HAS LANDED IN VEGAS MAKING AN IMPACT. Having expanded from Newport Beach, October marked their one year anniversary. But don’t let that fool you- - the word has gotten out! This year they have matched up with investors and completed five AirBnb’s in Las Vegas, Scottsdale, and Cleveland. Nenah Washington is the Principal Designer leading a team of talented designers and artists that outperform by insisting on and delivering desirable spaces that suit the owner/client. “One of my favorite projects is the recently completed Eyediology Vision Care Store in Summerlin. It was time for a refresh and we were able to hone-in on the style of the owners. One of the challenges was the small frame that comes with working on a Boutique. I promise you the smaller dimensions only enhanced our creative efforts. The same holds true for our residential projects; a condo, 2nd home, or spacious floor-plan we deliver style not just trends”. Factor in Nenah’s background in Fashion, her real estate license, her schooling in Interior Design, and it all makes sense. Her well rounded background has blended into a secret sauce leading to a trail of happy clients.

Creative Ways to Tell Your Child ‘I Love You’ Valentine’s Day is a perfect reason to show your child just how much he or she is loved. Try these creative ideas to show how much you care on Valentine’s Day and throughout the entire year.

EDIBLE IDEAS A heart a day. Add a heart-shaped candy to your child's lunch box every day of the school year. Be sure to stock up during after-Valentine's Day clearances so you stay supplied. Heart-shaped lunch. Use a large, heartshaped cookie cutter to make heart-shaped

sandwiches, toast, and other treats. Your kids will love the shape and that you've eliminated the crust. A cupful of love. Give your child a “World’s Greatest Son/Daughter” or “I Love You” cup. Then use it whenever you serve hot cocoa or graham crackers and milk. Do lunch. Pick up your child from school for a surprise lunch date. Hit your child's favorite fast-food joint, go on a picnic, or have lunch together in the school cafeteria. (If you choose the latter, make sure your child won't mind or be embarrassed.)

IDEAS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY OR ANY DAY OF THE YEAR

THE WRITTEN WORD A poet and didn't know it. You don't have to be a poet to write a poem for your child. If poetry isn't your thing, look up simple children's rhymes. Then make revisions, especially for your child. Poems can be serious or fun, but either way, your child will love them. A valentine's welcome. Welcome your child home from school with a valentine's banner across your front porch or entryway. Add cute sayings that remind your child why they are such a great child. Create fun sentences by clipping words from magazine ads and adding some valentine's doodles. Snail mail surprise. Kids love to get mail, so why not send your child a card, letter, or postcard? Don’t forget to let your child check the mail to discover the greeting. Say it with email. Send your child an email with a link to a fun website or a funny animated e-greeting. With the abundance of entertaining websites and free e-greetings, you can send your child something new every day of the year. Scrabble greetings. Wish your child a “Happy Valentine’s Day,” congratulate him on a great report card, or show how much you appreciate your child's help with a scrabble message. For younger readers, spell out a simple phrase leaving a space between words. For older kids, make them figure out your greeting. Intersect the words as you would in playing Scrabble, and see if they can solve the message. C is for…. Make a poster portraying your child’s characteristics. Put your child's name at the top. Then list as many positive descriptive words as you can that begin with your child's initial. Use a thesaurus to find oodles of words. (Example: Cassandra, cute, caring, creative, crafty, curious.) When you finish, laminate or frame it, and hang it in your child's room. Poetry praise. Give your child a poetry book written especially for sons or daughters, such as To My Son with Love or To My Daughter with Love

on the Important Things in Life, written by Susan Polis Schultz. These books offer encouragement and a new understanding of your love for and commitment to your child. Don’t forget to add your personal inscription inside.

DO IT TOGETHER Love is silly. One thing kids love and do best is act silly, so loosen up and join in the fun. If being silly isn’t your style, take a few lessons from your child, and practice up. Letting loose is a great way to reduce stress and to let your children know they're fun to be around. A gift of time. For today’s busy parents, finding time to read to or play with your child isn’t always easy. Fortunately, quality, rather than quantity, is what matters most. Show your child you care by setting aside a few minutes each day to talk, read, or play together. You’ll both reap the rewards. A class connection. As kids grow, time together becomes increasingly rare. Decide with your adolescent on an activity or hobby the two of you would enjoy together. Sign up for a class or set a regular schedule for the activity. Then mark it on your calendar. Treat it as you would any other commitment, not letting daily life interfere. A trip down memory lane. Flip through photo albums or watch family videos together, and reminisce about favorite holidays, vacations, and family times you’ve had together. Eventful gifts. Buy tickets to a concert, ice show, or sporting event your kids have been dying to see. But keep it a surprise. On the day of the event, just say you're all going out for dinner or some other concoction. Then catch your kids by surprise when you arrive at your actual destination. Make a date. Plan a regular date with your child for one-on-one time. This works exceptionally well for families with more than one child. Each parent should take a turn with each child. You can go out for lunch or supper, play putt-putt golf, watch a

movie, go roller-skating, or spend an afternoon at the park. Set a regular schedule so your child can look forward to your dates together.

GIFTS FROM THE HEART Flowers for her. Cut fresh flowers for your daughter to brighten her room and her day. Race cars for him. Clip sports cars from magazines for your son and post them on a bulletin board in his room. Engrave your thoughts. Have a necklace or bracelet engraved for your child. Be sure to include his name, your sentiments, and who it’s from. Van Gogh in the making. Sift through your child’s art collection and select a piece to display. Then matte, frame, and hang it in a room [other than your child’s] for everyone to see. Photos say a thousand words. Choose several pictures of your child from infancy through the present. Then use paper

edger scissors to trim them into different sizes and shapes. Overlap and tape them to the backing of a frame using double-sided tape. Then add matting and frame the collage. It’s in the wrapping. Don't wait for a special occasion to give your child a gift. Kids love presents, so the next time you pick up something for your child, wrap it as a surprise. Don't forget the ribbon (so it takes longer to unwrap), and include a small gift card that says how much you appreciate her. Scrapbookin’ fun. Put together a memory scrapbook of your child. Use photos, locks of hair, vacation postcards, and ticket stubs. Dedicate each page to a special holiday, event, or theme. Include dates and any details you remember, along with cute sayings and stickers to fit the themes. Kimberly Blaker is a freelance writer. LET YOUR INNER ARTIST EXPLORE AND ENJOY PAINTING WITH YOUR LOVED ONES

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | ARTS + CULTURE

One of the most fascinating aspects of art and creation is the correspondence between everyone involved. February is a cold yet heartwarming time for anyone who might have an apple in their eye. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, take creativity and bonding back to the essentials… painting. Brushing It Up is a painting business that comes to anywhere one might be— home, hotel, convention space, festival, restaurant, bar, or office. The team at Brushing It Up will guide the party through each step of the painting while still allowing room for each individual to add their own unique touch. Regardless of where the party is hosted, the team will take all the preparation and clean-up duties, so the client can fully enjoy their event time. What really sets Brushing It Up apart from other mobile painting parties is their patience and willingness to work with groups at their own pace. For some people, painting is something they do all the time, which can be quite intimidating for beginners at the party. Not only does Brushing It Up work with all skill levels, but they also accommodate the venue to create an even more comfortable atmosphere.

Establishing an accessible experience is important for this mobile painting party company, as they don’t want anyone to feel inadequate. No one needs to be an expert painter in order to enjoy their time, as the point is to just have fun and allow for creation to take its course on a blank canvas. Deena Pelton, artist and owner of Brushing It Up, said, “Art is very subjective, so people find so many different things beautiful. Getting perfection out of people’s heads is hard, but it’s not about perfection.” Booking with Brushing It Up for any group dynamics is easy. For Valentine’s Day, the opportunity to have a private painting party with a loved one can create something sentimental and original. Painting is an expressive outlet and can really bring out a side in everyone that isn’t normally tapped into on a daily basis. Perhaps it could also be the start of a new hobby between each other. Or it can be the perfect setting for a mother and daughter to build upon a mutually loved hobby. Parents can also book a paint party for their children. Kids have a phenomenal time painting because it allows them to explore their natural creativity. For those that need a little more guidance, some pre-drawn canvases are an option as well. However, Deena has noticed that kids tend to be braver painters than their elder counterparts and don’t let that little negative voice affect their willingness to try and paint without fear of the end result not being perfect. Singles can have just as much fun as couples do on this love-filled holiday as they can organize a singles party. The “Pop Up Art Bar” would be a great option for this particular event, as

A step-by-step guide through the painting

Parents can create a new tradition with their kids! Add your own individual touch to your creation

it allows the individual person to go up to the bar and choose a specific theme or project and paint to their heart’s desire. Plus, it really helps accommodate a larger group, considering some people might want to paint their own design at their own pace. Brushing It Up offers other additions to the party, such as glitter tattoos, face painting, and karaoke. Regardless of how large the party is and who will be attending, the organization of the event is never something that the clients will have to worry about. Brushing It Up supplies the materials needed, so running to the nearest art store and wandering up and down the aisles while guessing the proper tools won’t be on the list of worries. Top-quality acrylic and multiple-sized canvases are amongst the list of materials, along with some pre-drawn layouts if needed. If there isn’t a location that can be secured for a painting party or if people don’t feel like leaving their homes to have a party, there is always the option to have it virtually. This option does require the hosts to obtain the materials and properly disperse them to all members of the party beforehand. But this option doesn’t lack

in allowing for a memorable experience. Despite not being present in the room, there will still be thorough guidance through the painting process via Zoom. The most important philosophy of painting parties is the element of relaxation and fun. Deena said, “I’ve noticed that around 13 years old is when people lose their confidence in painting. Under 13… it’s like everyone is an artist.” At Brushing It Up, their goal is to bring everyone back to their root joys and let their inner child explore and be free again. These painting parties are a space to enjoy the simplicity of bringing brushes to a canvas while connecting to everyone in a unique and celebratory way.

For the Love of Learning Q & A W I T H M O J AV E S P R I N G S S C H O O L

Alexandra Cannady | School Director Mojave Springs School Mojave Springs School, a Waldorfinspired AWSNA registered initiative, is dedicated to fostering creative and independent thinkers by providing knowledge, nourishing emotional intelligence, and cultivating artistic expression, inspiring students to act with the right intention in the world. Red Rock City Lifestyle asked School Director Alexandra Cannady to share how the school’s philosophy and how it fosters the love of learning in each student.

PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR SCHOOL. Our school is truly unlike any other I've had the opportunity to work with. When I've led newcomers onto campus, I have always heard their excitement about their impression that the campus stands as an oasis in Las Vegas. We offer our children as many natural materials as possible in their play areas, classroom activities, and academic work. At the moment, our students range from two years old to third graders, and all our students are afforded many opportunities to bring their imaginative worlds to life. Our teachers give the

students space to create food, toys, and art from scratch, and it's clear how connected the students are to their work. I have a daughter in the Tansy class, our youngest, and a son in the Honeybee class, our kindergarten class. My children both come home excited to share songs and stories with me, and it is endlessly exciting to hear my two-year-old daughter's budding language explain the process of "flour, water, bread!" Our older students are guided through their academics in artistic and tactile activities as well, and although many of our teachers are new to Waldorf methods, they all have done so much work this school year to learn methods for guiding the children through watercolor, chalk drawing, and handwork activities. Our program is truly unique.

ARE YOU A LOCAL INSTITUTION? We are local, yes. Underneath Mojave Springs School is the Mojave Educational Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The founder, Jodi Reiter, was a mother who believed in bringing Waldorf education to Las Vegas so passionately that she created what we're continuing today. Our current Board of Directors is made up of local community members as well as parents from the school, and everyone CONTINUED >

“It’s a special experience working with others who care so deeply about what’s best for these children.” is equally dedicated to fostering the best for the school and its students.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL'S PHILOSOPHY. Rudolf Steiner originated the Waldorf educational philosophy around the concepts of anthroposophy. At its core, it aims to deeply understand child development, to see each student as the whole person they are, and to continually learn how the context of society and culture affect individual development. At its most straightforward level, the Waldorf methodology sees personhood, fosters it, and educates within it.

HOW DO YOUR TEACHERS TEACH THE LOVE OF LEARNING? Think of the teachers who had the most profound impact on you. Did it matter what they taught, or did it matter who they were? When Rudolf Steiner set up the first Waldorf school in Stuttgart, he acknowledged that it matters who each individual teacher is and whether that teacher can see who each individual student is. Our teachers take great care in preparing their stories, lessons, and activities to make sure not only that they're covering content the students need for everyday life but also that each student has been considered in their preparations. If I think back on what caused me to love learning in my own life, it was the human connection I was afforded, the artistic opportunity, and the intellectual connection I felt with the great philosophers and historical figures I was learning about.

40

EDU CAT ION COR N E R | EDUCATI ON

HOW ARE STUDENTS ENCOURAGED TO BE FREE THINKERS? Our students have so many opportunities to think freely. In the younger classrooms, the students do whole-group activities: stories and songs during circle time, Spanish, baking, watercolor painting, clay modeling, felting, and more. Our older students knit, crochet, learn violin and flute, and perform their language arts and math lessons together. However, students of all ages at Mojave Springs are given time for unfettered play. This is where their individuality really shines through. I've seen our students make their own obstacle courses, create ships out of wooden crates and silk scarves to sail the seas, make stages out of logs and instruments out of planks to perform rock concerts, and build circus arenas wherein various students performed their unique skills. One teacher also shared the story of two Honeybees a couple of years ago making a full-fledged jewelry store entirely out of paper; they were five years old, mind you. Giving space for students to express themselves is an integral part of our every day.

WHAT IS THE THOUGHT PROCESS BEHIND CALLING YOUR DAILY SCHEDULE A RHYTHM? In truth, when we think of our routines, all of us are really part of a rhythm. Some of this rhythm is determined by ourselves, but a lot of it is reliant on external influence. Think of how different our routine may be in the shortened days of winter as opposed to the

extended days of the summer months. Children rely on their rhythm to ground them (don't we all?), and although this is loosely based on time, it's also based on the circumstances of each day. The schedule may tell us that it's 9:15 a.m., which may mean it's time to gather water bottles, wash up, and head inside for our morning snack. Our rhythm, however, may have driven our students to build a fortress in the sand, and perhaps they're just now filling their moat with water. The teacher who is observing his or her class may see that the snack can't begin until this student-driven activity comes to a natural close. That's what makes rhythm different.

WHAT IS THE ONE THING NEW PARENTS ARE THE HAPPIEST ABOUT IN THE FIRST WEEKS OF SCHOOL?

Alexandra Cannady. Photo credit Martselina Phillips

My answer to that question is so different from one new family to the next. One new elementary student, for example, has been waking up thrilled to return to class each day, and that's what has made the parents the happiest. Other parents love joining us for festivals, like our recent Lantern Festival at Rainbow Family Park. I, myself, just got to enroll my daughter in late October when she turned two, and I love hearing her sing me songs, talk to me about baking, and show me dances from Spanish class. I suppose the throughline here is that parents love seeing their children engage in truly joyful activities while learning skills they might not otherwise have had the opportunity to learn.

ARE THERE ANY ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? I'm very lucky to have seen our school from different angles. I joined the Parent Council (PC) at the end of my first year, then became the president of PC, then an elementary teacher, and then the director, where I am now. I've enjoyed every role I've had at the school, and I've seen so much love come out of everyone who contributes to it. It's hard work building a startup school and even harder work using a methodology so new to the area and many of the teachers and parents. Still, it’s so rewarding because of how dedicated everyone is to the vision.

LOVE STORIES REVEALED Heart-to-heart with a Las Vegas Private Investigator “When it comes to what drives me to do what I do, it’s all about finding answers. Whether those answers turn out to be bad or good, I know I am always helping someone.” Jennifer Knight is a private investigator and owner of the Las Vegas-based PI firm, True Investigations. She launched the agency in 2014 but has been in the field for nearly 15 years.

“I actually kind of fell into this career,” said Knight. “During my senior year at UNLV, I missed my deadline to apply for an internship with the FBI. I wanted to do surveillance. So, when that happened, I called around to a number of private investigation firms, and I eventually found one that hired me.” The owner of that firm ended up being a mentor for Knight and encouraged her to start her own business. Knight said she still finds people can be surprised to learn what she does for a living. “They would say you look nothing like a PI, and I would ask what you think a PI looks like?” said Knight. “Now that I don’t do a lot of my own surveillance and I have people helping me with that, it’s not about anonymity for me anymore. I actually stand out as a private investigator who goes out there in the community network. I want people to know what I do, and I am really creative in getting my name out there.”

Over the years, “True Investigations” has become one of the top PI firms in Southern Nevada. Knight said three of the biggest reasons people seek her out are for surveillance, background investigation, and locating services. “One of our more memorable assignments was with this older gentleman who contacted me because he wanted to track down his high school girlfriend,” said Knight. “He didn’t want to rekindle a relationship or anything. He just wanted to see her again. Well, we did find her way across the country. She’s married with a family, but she was actually excited and wanted to reconnect with him as well. That made us happy.” Knight admits that happy news isn’t always what she serves up for her clients, especially those asking her to track their spouses or significant others traveling to work in Las Vegas. “We are a tourist and a convention town, and unfortunately, we do a lot of surveillance for spouses,” said Knight. But Knight says Las Vegas is also a city where love can play a starring role in her line of work. One of her recent cases involved a couple who had come to town to renew their wedding vows and ended up losing a prized possession. That was until Knight and her team stepped in to help. “The wife ended up losing a couple of carats of diamond that fell off a vintage ring she had inherited from her grandmother. The couple looked everywhere and couldn't find it," said Knight. “They ended up leaving town but called me a few weeks later to get our help. And within a week, we were able to track down that diamond that had fallen out when they were out seeing a show. An employee at that show had picked it up, thinking it was part of a costume. It just took us walking

the streets and talking to people, and we were able to help this family.” Knight says her own love story also grew here in this town. She has been married to the person she calls the “love of her life” for the last nine years. He was her high school sweetheart. They found their way back to each other after being in different relationships. We asked Knight what her husband thinks and how he reacts to her line of work.

46

“He is actually honest to a fault and extremely transparent about stuff that, a lot of times, I don’t really need to know about,” laughed Knight. “He would say I don’t want you finding out anything that I may not have told you. He does love what I do and is extremely supportive.” Today, with True Investigations about to enter its ninth year in operation, Knight says she hopes to continue being the source of support for her community.

“By the time someone gets the courage to pick up the phone and make that phone call, they are trusting us to do whatever we can to help them. I take that job very seriously because whatever we find can change their entire life. I love what I do. I am empathetic, and I feel my clients have always picked up on that.”

Perfect Diamond With more than 20 years of experience in the high-end jewelry business, Jenny O Calleri’s favorites are phenomenal gems. That term is literal — they are gemstones created by a natural-occurring phenomenon. One example is a star sapphire–it displays a striking star-like pattern in the center of the gem. Another is a Cat's Eye Chrysoberyl, which has a slitted pattern (much like a cat’s eye.) Or even a color change alexandrite, which can exhibit an emerald hue by day and then shift to ruby red by night. “This all happens naturally within the gem – it’s unbelievable. Our Earth creates this beauty naturally. It’s my mission to help people understand what they are looking at and how rare these materials are,” Jenny O shares emphatically. But when it comes to accent stones, Calleri asserts confidently: diamonds are the best. “When it comes to diamonds, I’m a high-performance girl. Blue diamonds are my favorite.” Assessing gemstones is one of her special talents. She’s had a hand in it all, from sourcing to designing. She’s worked for one of the top companies in the world that purchases diamonds from mines and

then cuts the raw diamonds. In another role, she sold loose diamonds. And she has, of course, also sold finished jewelry to resellers all over the country. “I have a keen eye for quality and design,” Jenny O explains. She’s held more diamonds than most people in the world over the course of her decades-long career. Lucky for us, she took the time to share what qualities to look for in the perfect diamond.

HOW TO PICK THE PERFECT DIAMOND: 1. Cut is key. For Jenny O, performance is more important than carat — here’s why. Carat measures the weight of the diamond, but the cut dictates how a diamond performs. It’s not about the shape, per se, but rather how the cut is tailored to show off the diamond itself. The perfect cut shows off how the diamond reflects light. In other words, how it shines. For Jenny O, the performance of a diamond is everything—and it’s her specialty. 2. The brighter, the better. Color might be the most obvious quality in a diamond — you can see right away when it’s yellow, black, pink, or blue. But when a diamond has the perfect cut, the color will appear even brighter and larger than its carat weight. That’s something to pay attention to. 3. Not all diamonds are equal. When investing in a diamond, it’s important to ensure that the diamond has been graded properly. While Jenny O’s trained eye is one of the top in the country, each diamond that she sells is accompanied by an independent grading report from one of the top institutions in the gemology industry. This verifies that the diamonds are, in fact, quality-assured. 4. Be cautious with surprises. While surprises can be romantic, jewelry is incredibly personal and taste-specific. When investing in jewelry for someone you love, Jenny O recommends keeping the surprises to a minimum. If you do want to surprise someone, she advises surprising your loved one with the choice of gemstone, for example, rather than the entire setting. CONTINUED >

“Jewelry is an artifact of life that adorns people through generations.” “I have so many amazing pieces in my store. When you come in, you really get to try on the best of the best,” Calleri shares. And what’s more, if you spot something you like, Jenny O can help you to make it your own and design the perfect piece. That’s really what puts her above the rest when it comes to jewelry; she can make just about anything happen. Her designs feel practically limitless — and that creativity is what makes her love her job. One of her favorite parts of owning Huntington Jewelers has been the chance to be a part of the most memorable moments in her customers’ lives. People always remember the place where they proposed, of course. But according to Jenny O, where they bought their engagement ring and how people made them feel in that process — that’s also something people never forget. Over the years, she’s heard of just about every proposal idea in the book: mountain tops, skywriting, jumbotrons. You name it, she’s heard it. (Her husband proposed to her at the top of Diamond Head crater, Hawaii’s famed volcano hike, for the record.)

54

LOCA L’S CH OICE | STY L E + BE AUTY

She specializes in something she lovingly refers to as a “Jewelry Box Makeover.” Many people inherit jewelry from loved ones that have passed and never wear them. This jewelry can often be outdated — there could be a gorgeous gemstone in an old-fashioned brooch, let’s say. Or it could simply be something that isn’t your style. Jenny O will take the time to sift through her clients’ jewelry boxes and identify what’s worth keeping — what has either sentimental value or material value. From there, she gets to know her client’s taste and style and then reworks pieces into something beautiful, personalized, and wearable. One of the most rewarding parts of this process is taking something that hasn’t been worn in decades and making it something that her clients can wear daily. After all, Jenny O doesn’t believe that gemstones belong shut away in the dark — they deserve to shine bright in the light of day. It’s what they were made for. “Jewelry is an artifact of life that adorns people through generations, and that’s something I’m able to be a part of,” she shares.

Celebrity Cars Las Ve g as A ROAD TO SUCCESS FOR A LOCAL BUSINESS THAT RUNS ON PASSION

58

M UST SE E | AU TO + M AR INE

If you love cars and you live in Las Vegas, then there’s a good chance you have heard of Ryan Hamilton and his team at Celebrity Cars. “We have been part of this community for more than 20 years. We love what we do because it’s fun. We connect people with things they love.” Hamilton is the general manager of this 20 thousand square foot dealership, located just minutes from the Las Vegas Strip. The showroom is filled with millions of dollars worth of exotic and classic vehicles from around the world. When he

initially opened Celebrity Cars in 2000, Hamilton said it was a much smaller operation, but like this city, the business has grown right along with it. “Most dealerships concentrate on a particular type of exotic or luxury car, but we do everything,” said Hamilton. "Our vehicles span about a century, from the early 1900s to newer exotic and luxury cars.” Over the years, Celebrity Cars have gained quite a “celebrity” status after acquiring a number of vehicles that have gotten the attention of a lot of people.

“Most dealerships concentrate on a particular type of exotic or luxury car, but we do everything. Our vehicles span about a century, from the early 1900s to newer exotic and luxury cars.”

Currently on display is the actual BMW that Tupac Shakur was shot in while riding in it after a fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. This is the first time this car has ever been up for sale or display since his death in 1996. The vehicle, which has been completely restored and is in excellent condition, is currently listed for sale at 1.75 million dollars. “It’s a piece of history, and we get people who come in here just to check it out. We have received a lot of media exposure while having it up for sale.” Another high-profile vintage vehicle at Celebrity Cars is Al Capone’s Bulletproof

1928 Cadillac V8. With a price tag of 1 million dollars, this car was modified to be armored bulletproof at the direction of the late gangster himself, making it the first of its kind in the world. “We have gotten some offers in for these cars,” said Hamilton. “But so far, none of the offers have come close to what we are looking for.” When it comes to vehicles that are gaining the most traction among current collectors, those popular back in the 80s and 90s are at the top of the list. According to Hamilton, these cars have gained a cult following, with

people who grew up during that time now seeking a piece of sentimental value. “These are the cars that a lot of 40- and 50-year-olds of today used to have posted on their walls," said Hamilton. "Also, cars with manual transmissions are also seeing their values go up because they are getting phased out." Hamilton and his team are also building a strong community of old and new car lovers with their "Celebrity Cars & Coffee" events. Every Saturday morning, hundreds of exotic and classic vehicles line the parking lot south of the I-215 and Eastern. Hamilton said when

car lovers bring their vehicles in as part of this event, it creates an experience that can't be replicated in any showroom. "It's a chance for us to go out there and meet people in this community," said Hamilton. "It's brand recognition and a way for people to connect with others who love cars just as much as us.” Hamilton, a married father of a toddler, said his love for cars started when he was young and was passed on by his own dad, a local optometrist. "Yeah, his work has nothing to do with this business, but he was the one who got

me into cars. This is a business like any other line of work, but it's not typical or boring. We do have a lot of fun.” We asked if Hamilton is ready to pass on his passion for cars down to his 3-year-old son. He answered with a smile. "He already loves cars for sure, but I guess we will see what will happen. My dad let me choose my own path and supported me in my career, so I plan to do the same with my son.”

“It’s brand recognition and a way for people to connect with others who love cars just as much as us.”

Anger Management and Change

Dr. Vicki D. Coleman

Considering a self-assessment to address self-concept and self-esteem ARTICLE BY DR. VICKI D. COLEMAN

In the 21st-century global economy, anger has become a major personal, family, organizational, institutional, and societal challenge, among others. Anger management involves change, including acquiring information about self and the environment. The initial step in anger management is acknowledging that one needs to change, as many individuals respond that they do not have a problem and that it is someone else’s fault or responsibility. These individuals are in denial, not accepting accountability, and have an attitude or mindset that can be a major barrier to the process of anger management. Another major barrier can be low self-concept or low self-esteem. Change will not occur without motivation, and individuals change when there is motivation to change and when they have a cursory understanding of who they are. In my anger management program, I initially focus on self-assessment, with an emphasis on self-concept and self-esteem, as these are, I believe, the integral components and foundation of an Anger Management Program. Dr. Vicki D. Coleman, a.k.a. The Anger Doctor, is President/CEO of The Coleman Group & The Anger Doctor - comprehensive management consulting firms specializing in Anger Management, Mediation, Human Capital, Psychotherapy, Training, and Research. A former Tenured Professor at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, she also is a Clinical Supervisor and Online Professor of Psychology, Counseling, Human Services, and U.S. History.

The Anger Doctor To begin the self-assessment process, I ask individuals to examine the self as it relates to six areas of both self-concept and self-esteem: • • • • •

Personal Physical Family Social and Community Academic/Work/ Professional/Financial • Moral/Ethical/Spiritual (Modified from Fitts & Warren, 1996) By conducting an in-depth assessment and evaluation of the self, based on the six aforementioned areas of self-concept and self-esteem, individuals better understand whom they are, including issues and concerns related to anger and anger management, to name a few. “For my patients, achieving and maintaining perfect eyesight is often a top priority, and I strive to help them achieve that goal through highquality care and treatment.” surgical options for conditions including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, muscle imbalance, cataracts, and corneal conditions. The Shepherd Eye Surgicenter is state-licensed, Medicare-approved, and accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc.

WHAT DO YOU SPECIALIZE IN? I am a board-certified general Ophthalmologist and specialize in cataract and refractive surgery.

WHAT DO LOCAL PATIENTS MEAN TO YOU? As a local doctor working in a locally owned practice, local patients are the backbone of the practice. They are the ones who support the business and help keep it running. I have a personal connection to them, as we are members of the same community, and I take pride in providing them with high-quality medical care. Local patients also help create a sense of community within the practice, which is an important aspect of providing healthcare.

WHAT DOES PERFECT EYESIGHT MEAN? Perfect eyesight is the ability to see clearly without the aid of glasses or

contact lenses. It means having a visual acuity of 20/20, which is the standard measure of normal vision. For me and my patients, perfect eyesight is an important aspect of overall health and well-being. It allows people to engage in activities and experiences without being limited by their vision and can positively impact their quality of life. For my patients, achieving and maintaining perfect eyesight is often a top priority, and I strive to help them achieve that goal through high-quality care and treatment.

SOME PEOPLE MIGHT TAKE THEIR EYESIGHT FOR GRANTED. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THEM? Our eyesight is one of the most important senses, and it allows us to engage in the world around us in a visual way. It is important to take care of our eyes and to have regular eye exams to ensure that our vision is as good as it can be. I also remind people that many eye conditions and diseases do not have symptoms in the early stages, so it is important to have regular checkups to catch any potential problems early on. Finally, I often encourage people to wear protective eyewear when engaging in activities that could potentially damage their eyes, such as playing sports or working with machinery.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3-5 TIPS FOR YOUR PATIENTS ON HOW TO PROTECT THEIR EYESIGHT? 1. Have regular comprehensive eye exams. This is the best way to catch any potential eye problems early on and to ensure that your vision is as good as it can be. 2. Wear protective eyewear when necessary. This includes wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays and wearing safety glasses or goggles when engaging in activities that could potentially damage your eyes, such as playing sports or using power tools. 3. Take care of your overall health. Many chronic conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, can have an impact on your eyesight. By taking care of your overall health, you can help protect your eyes as well. 4. Avoid smoking. Smoking can increase your risk of developing eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. 5. Eat a healthy diet. Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can help protect your eyes and maintain good vision. Some specific nutrients that are important for eye health include vitamins C and E, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids.
