Paige Candee | paige.candee@citylifestyle.com

January is a month that represents new beginnings, new promises, and new goals! What do you want to accomplish this year? What are your goals? What are the steps you will take to see them through? As a licensed clinical professional counselor, I used to help my clients understand that making sustainable change is all about taking small baby steps. Real change takes time, persistence, and patience. Focusing on what you can do at this moment to make that change keeps you from feeling overwhelmed. Sometimes just looking at the bigger picture can make your goals seem unachievable, so you give up. This Health & Wellness issue is filled with inspirational stories to help you set your health and wellness goals for 2023. Because no matter how healthy and fit we are, there is always something that we can do differently. You will read about a local rock climber’s journey, memory care planning for your loved ones, fitness, pampering, and even financial wellness. May your 2023 be filled with prosperity, abundant health, lots of love, and many blessings! Remember to support the local businesses that partner with Red Rock City Lifestyle and follow us on social media! From my heart to yours,

Lower energy costs | Increased ITC tax credit now 30% of project cost Beat inflation - no increase in electricity cost for life No more worry about peak time surcharges “Solar was something that we were not too interested in until we saw the long term savings, which was $60,000 plus over the next 20 years. I never thought about the fact that we can lock in our future rates at todays cost by going this route. Owning our power source at that point just made sense. Bell did a fantastic job explaining the pros and cons and we def initely made the right decision for our family. The installation and conversion process was super simple and they really took pride in the f inished product. I highly recommend any homeowner exploring this as an option.” -Kimberly I.

Your Health’s First Line of Defense Kimberli Irvin was about six years into her career before she found a dental practice that aligned with her purpose to truly help people. When she stepped into her role at Wagner Dental, she knew she had found the right place to help patients get healthy and stay healthy for their whole lives. She explains, “we serve our patients

by utilizing an approach to dentistry that is whole health focused.” Unfortunately, for most people, it isn’t easy to find a dentist that treats patients with this modern approach. Irvin knew there had to be more out there than the old school “drill and fill” dentistry, a practice model that resulted in increased fear and

pain for patients and was unnecessarily invasive. “Preventative care is a top priority for us at Wagner Dental. [Dentistry] can get really stuck in ‘we’re just going to clean your teeth; we’re going to do a filling.’ [But] at Wagner Dental, we approach dentistry differently. Our diagnosis and treatment options take into account your overall health and risk factors.” As a patient at Wagner Dental, you might notice something unusual: they take your blood pressure and consult you about your entire medical history. If any of the medical history or results of diagnostic testing is unusual, they refer their patients to see a primary care physician to ensure they are healthy enough to be treated. Wagner Dental’s dentists and hygienists take pride in their role as healthcare providers. After all, according to Irvin, “Only one in 10 people see their primary care physician every year, but one in five people visit a dentist once a year. What that means to our dentists is that we need to be the first line of defense for systemic disease for the patients in our practice.” As soon as the patients first open their mouths, the trained eye of Wagner Dental’s dentists and hygienists can use the look and feel of their teeth and the tissue in the mouth to begin to determine their overall health, from periodontal disease to type-II diabetes. Kimberli explains that one of the most common diagnoses in dentistry is sleep apnea. “The minute someone opens their mouth

to say, ‘ah,’ we can see how well they sleep at night. We can see into their airway, which affects the function of our whole body. We need adequate oxygen to function properly. Our next question is typically, ‘has anyone ever told you that you snore?’” For one of her patients, that question changed her life. A sleep study showed that she stopped breathing more than 100 times in a night. At 32, she was exhausted all the time and had trouble maintaining her weight. “If you’re not getting good, solid sleep, certain parts of your body can’t store memories or rejuvenate,” Irvin elaborates. “Her hormones were all out of whack because she wasn’t getting enough oxygen to feed the systems in the body that adjust and regulate hormones.” She was fitted with a mouthguard-like device to help keep her airway open while she slept. Three months later, she had zero episodes of breathing cessation while she slept. Even better, she had energy again and no longer had trouble maintaining her weight. One visit in the right dentist’s chair had a tremendous impact on her overall and oral health. The patient experience at Wagner Dental is intended to have a concierge-style feel. You’re offered water while you wait. When you sit down in the chair, you’ll notice music playing, and a blanket is made available to you. While these things may seem small, they have a tremendous impact on the patient experience. Kimberli notes, “this sets the mood and helps

“Transforming smiles is our job, but transforming patients’ confidence is our passion.”

patients feel safe.” She also adds, “we are far more aware of patients' psychological needs when it comes to healthcare than ever before.” As dental providers, they recognize how sensitive the mouth is for their patients. She means this in a literal sense, as their practice involves placing their hands directly into their patients’ mouths. In the case of extraction, that’s a part of someone you’re removing, after all. But on a deeper, psychological level, as well.

28

LOCA L’S CH OICE | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S

Let’s face it—our smiles say a lot about how we feel and how the world sees us. And more often than not, how we see ourselves. For many people, the dentist’s chair is intimidating— especially for those who need it the most. “Patients get scared there is so much to be done that they can’t afford it [or] that they don’t have the time. When patients have been underserved in health or in dentistry, it’s so overwhelming for them to comprehend where to start.” Irvin

explains, “we’ve been able to take everything they need and break it into bite-sized pieces.” One of her most memorable patients was a young woman who came into Wagner Dental complaining of pain in her mouth. She hid her smile out of habit. Kimberli asked her if there was anything about her smile or her teeth that she didn’t like. The patient burst into tears. Kimberli elaborates, “patients come in like that, expecting a laundry list [of problems]. First, I said, we need to take care of your pain. Then, we are going to clean your teeth and make sure everything starts to look healthy. And then, we are going to start to address how we can improve your confidence by restoring some of your missing teeth. And we did. We did one tooth at a time, and she ended up having a beautiful smile.” Two years later, her patient, a researcher at a local university, was published for her work. In the headshot alongside it, she was smiling from ear to ear. “Transforming smiles is our job, but transforming patients' confidence is our passion,” shares Irvin. That’s the Wagner Dental approach.

“We are far more aware of patients’ psychological needs when it comes to healthcare than ever before.”

AN IMMERSION IN NATURE ON A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY

O UT D OOR A DV E N T U R E | TRAVE L

After quitting law at the beginning of 2007, I became obsessed with helping people become the best version of themselves. From 2008 until 2012, I did that by helping my clients from the outside in when I worked as an image consultant. After moving to the United States in 2013, I went back to school and got a master’s degree in mental health counseling. In this new path as a professional counselor, I was able to help clients change from the inside out. I also have been obsessed with reaching as many people as possible to spread motivation, inspiration, courage, and change. Seeing clients one-on-one in my office was simply not cutting it. During a session with a client at the end of 2021, I was inspired to create a magical holistic retreat in the middle of the Brazilian rainforest. My business partner Michelle Barreto and I organized an incredible experience for people who want to reconnect to themselves, let go of what no longer serves them, and get closer to the best version of themselves. Twice a year, we host

a week-long Ayurvedic-based retreat in Brazil called Spiritual Journey. Ayurveda is an ancient form of holistic medicine that originated in India over 3,000 years ago and combines physical, spiritual, and psychological health. The term comes from the Sanskrit words Ayur (life) and Veda (science or knowledge). Therefore, Ayurveda translates to “knowledge of life.” According to Ayurveda, our diseases are caused by imbalances and stress in our body, mind, and soul. These imbalances can be restored by adjusting the food we eat and our lifestyle by incorporating meditation, yoga practices, and sitting in saunas to warm up our bodies. To help our attendees optimize their experience during that week and get the most out of the retreat, everyone goes through an individualized and confidential consultation one month before they travel. During this appointment, our therapists determine the attendees’ predominant dosha and what type of foods and spices will be cooked for them that week. Our therapists also suggest new practices and behaviors they should adopt before embarking on their Spiritual Journey in Brazil. This week-long experience takes place in the middle of the Atlantic Forest in the state of Rio de Janeiro, close to the historic town of Paraty. We stay in a small ecological sanctuary surrounded by tropical rainforests, waterfalls, natural pools, trails, birds, monkeys, bobcats, and other wild animals. Nina, the sanctuary’s resident dog, is always there to ensure everyone is happy. The first four days of the retreat are filled with rituals, yoga classes, massage therapy sessions, guided meditations, and teachings on Ayurveda,

Brazilian-Indigenous traditions, and the power of plant medicine. The highlight of the retreat happens on the fifth and sixth days of that week. We bring shamans from the Amazon tribes Shawanawa and Huni Kuin to conduct traditional indigenous ceremonies filled with music, chanting, healing, and plant medicine. I would like to share some powerful testimonials that we have received from people who have attended our retreat. I hope to inspire you to embark on your own transformational journey so that you can take one step further into becoming who you are meant to be: the best possible version of yourself. Jason: “This trip to Brazil has taught me to let go. Let go of a lot. Let go of family trauma… and with that, I feel powerful. I feel like I can take on the world.” Cindy: “Being here has helped me reconnect with myself and who I am. I want to keep eating better, and I bought a few Ayurveda cookbooks to help me do that. My biggest takeaway from this retreat has been forgiving my parents.” Stu: “The biggest takeaway from this trip was me. I really became more Stu (me) than I had been in the past 20 to 30 years, and I am very proud of that; I am very happy about that. Tiffany: “This trip has been life-changing, and I am very grateful for this experience; with my intention in mind, it was a success. I intended to leave my traumas behind and go forward with peace… my experience was very intense. I felt the anger leave me while calmness and stillness took over like I had never felt before. I am very grateful for that.” On Friday morning, we have our last yoga practice and guided meditation, the retreat’s closing ceremony, and a special brunch. In the afternoon, we head to Paraty to explore and have a celebratory dinner at one of the local award-winning restaurants. If you are looking for an opportunity to stay immersed in nature for an entire week while connecting to your essence and your divine, Spiritual Journey in Brazil needs to be on your bucket list. Our next retreat is coming up in April, and the following one is scheduled for October. We only take ten people at a time, so jump at the opportunity – your true self is waiting.

FINANCIALLY FIT IN THE

NEW YEAR Experts share tips for success for your business and family

Heading into the new year, people often seek new beginnings in many aspects of their lives. And when it comes to financial well-being, having a solid plan is key. We talked to some local experts who shared their tips on how to kick off 2023 with fresh perspectives. Kenny Lamberson is the Founder & CEO of Emancipators Financial Alliance. His company assists clients in building new professional ventures through capital fundraising and strategic alliances. Lamberson said his first advice to anyone when it comes to

boosting their financial health is to embrace a growth mindset. “Always find the opportunities to learn and grow,” said Lamberson. “Recently, I was asked what my recipe for success was in getting through the pandemic. I said it was my ability to be like bamboo — flexible and pivot when I need to." The self-proclaimed “Financial Emancipator” said that over the course of his career, he had to pivot a number of times. Lamberson was initially on track to go to law school and become

an attorney, but then he caught the “entrepreneurial” bug and started working in a number of companies before starting his own business. Lamberson said that whatever field you are in, it’s important to find your passion to gain success. His purpose is to help people break through their social, racial, and economic barriers in order to gain access to resources to build their own ventures. He also wants to help people foster the “attitude of gratitude” on their entrepreneurial journeys. “Always be grateful for what you have, and more will come to you. I think that’s how the quote goes,” said Lamberson. “When you have that mind shift, you begin to realize that things don’t happen to you; they happen for you. That’s when you will be on track to reach your goals, whether it be with money or anything else in life.” A common financial resolution for many who are starting to build their assets is to begin investing. Shanna Kehoe, the managing partner and wealth advisor with Diamond Wealth Management, said finding the right financial advisor to help with that process can be a game changer. “We give objective financial advice. From the beginning, we sit down with each client and see what they have done, why they have done it, and what they are trying to accomplish,” said Kehoe. “We always start by being an outsider looking in, and then we move on to work side by side with our clients and become their accountability coach.” One piece of advice Kehoe gives for starting the new year off on the right financial footing is for people to take an honest inventory of their finances. For individuals and business owners, she said looking through year-end statements to see what’s really going in and out can be key. “Many people are spending money on things they weren't even aware of. Things like streaming services or memberships and subscriptions to products and services they no longer use. All these things can really add up, and that money can be saved or better spent elsewhere.” Kehoe says this is why it’s important to come up with a clear financial plan, and having an expert to help along the way can take a lot of stress and confusion out of this process. “It can be challenging and overwhelming for many to tackle the financial plan on their own,” said Kehoe. “Life gets in the way, and people are busy. What we do at Diamond Wealth is offer that accountability partnership while we look out for our client's best interests. If you are looking to have a financial team help CONTINUED >

plan and strategize your financial future in the new year and beyond, our team is here for you.” Growing your wealth is always a great goal to achieve. Still, Helen Vasquez, a Captive Agent with American Family Insurance, said protecting what you already have is also critical for any individual or family. “This is why I love what I do: I love working to educate people on ways to protect themselves. I have skin in the game, and that’s how I sleep soundly at night.” A 20-year veteran in the insurance industry, Vasquez specializes in property and casualty, commercial business insurance, bonds, and life insurance. She said one of the best tips she gives her clients is to make sure they take the time to study and understand any contract they sign up for, including their insurance policies. “Make sure you read up on all your contracts because sometimes it's a penny to the dollar from one coverage to the next,” said Vasquez. “It’s important to think about the needs that you and your family have now, then work with someone who understands those needs as well.” Vasquez said reviewing your insurance contracts at least once a year is always a good idea. A good agent can help you determine if you need to change your policy to reflect the current circumstances in your life. She also stresses the importance of keeping up with the rules and regulations that can differ from one state to the next. “At the end of the day, read the fine lines. We put everything in writing. That’s how we protect ourselves,” said Vasquez. “Make it your New Year’s resolution to stay up to date on everything that impacts your finances, including your insurance.” All these financial tips and advice may seem overwhelming, but the experts say like any goal in life, you don’t have to accomplish everything all at once. They say that just taking that first step can make a big difference in helping you achieve your financial goals in 2023 and beyond.

Austin Martell, the

Climbing Realtor Recreational sport turned commitment to community ARTICLE BY JORDAN WATSON PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF AUSTIN MARTELL

50

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON

It’s hard to miss the signature broad smile and thick bun of Austin Martell, and anyone who frequents Vegas’ Red Rock Canyon is likely to have seen them. Austin, or the Climbing Realtor as many know him, is a regular in the park and the many other outdoor treasure troves that the area has to offer. Although originally from the Pacific Northwest, Austin was stopped in his tracks during a period of travel upon discovering Las Vegas. What primarily piqued his interest was the accessibility to rock climbing, which he had never before pursued. Before finding climbing, Austin had spent his time doing just about everything else outside—from mountaineering and scuba diving to canyoneering and skydiving. Progressing beyond his foundation in organized sports and a degree in exercise physiology, exploring the outdoors was an extremely affecting process in terms of personal growth, stress management, and

more dynamic physical training. This constant process of staying healthy in a more holistic sense is the foundation of Austin's immediately recognizable strength of character and charisma. Even so, he had to take things one step further. Austin’s stop through Las Vegas occurred during an offseason when he was serving as a wildland firefighter. Not only did this change of pace allow him to experience and enjoy the country’s natural resources he protected, but focusing on rock climbing provided a means for him to stay both physically and mentally fit during his offseason. Climbing is unique from many other sports in that it is an even balance of strength in physicality, technique, and mentality. Those unfamiliar with climbing may not be aware that it is much more than having superior upper body strength. Rather, it requires equal force in balance, finesse, and strength, primarily in the tendons, which are especially difficult to strengthen.

This means that training for climbing must be highly intentional in targeting very specific physical strengths as well as overall body awareness and control. More than this, there is an inherent risk to the sport, so a climber must train mentally to practice risk mitigation and fear control through improving technique, breathwork, and technical knowledge of gear use and best safety practices. Working on each of these means that constant small failures are inherent to climbing but working through and beyond those failures is what makes you stronger, not unlike in the rest of life. While all of these elements may seem overwhelming when combined, a perfect balance can be struck amongst them, which is lovingly known to climbers as the flow state. This is when the mind is quiet, the body is in tune with the demands of the rock, and each of those little past failures culminates into a successful climb. Chasing the flow state became Austin’s

“THOSE UNFAMILIAR WITH CLIMBING MAY NOT BE AWARE THAT IT IS MUCH MORE THAN HAVING SUPERIOR UPPER BODY STRENGTH. RATHER, IT REQUIRES EQUAL FORCE IN BALANCE, FINESSE, AND STRENGTH.”

method of maintaining his sanity after months of being overloaded with adrenaline in perilous situations while working on a Hot Shot fire crew. Using climbing to push himself physically and mentally in a safe and controllable manner was a safe haven for processing the intense experiences of being in the field while staying fit in body and mind. Even so, there’s so much more to the climbing experience than what happens within. Being on rock encourages knowledge of it. One type of stone is different from another, which affects the climbing experience of each. For instance, the beautiful red sandstone emblematic of Las Vegas is a system of lithified sand dunes. This history of the stone influences its formations that act as the climbing holds and also makes it more delicate than harder stones, which means it’s more delicate and requires its own brand of respect and climbing ethics. Beyond Red Rock are a number of prestigious locations close enough to Vegas for a climbing day trip–the volcanic composite in Bishop, California, the limestone on Mount Charleston, Nevada, and the famous granite of Joshua Tree National Park, California, to name a few. When each location offers its own history, atmosphere, and climbing to enjoy, it’s nearly impossible for an active climber to ever grow weary of the sport. Despite the never-ending motivation to travel to a diversity of climbing areas, access to beautiful rock isn’t the only climbing jackpot in Las Vegas. There’s also the strong climbing community. The climbers in town

not only love their sport but also, are committed to keeping each other safe and protecting and preserving the natural resources that so benefit their lives. Having that sort of a network of mutual understanding, respect, and appreciation is a priceless resource and even reflects the sense of fraternity inherent in the fire, search and rescue, and first responder crews of Austin’s past. When you’re as connected to a community as much as Austin is, it’s hard not to want to give back to it. That’s how the Climbing Realtor came to be. Although the role is demanding in many ways, Austin says that it’s easy to be the Climbing Realtor and to be stoked on connecting people to their new homes because of how much he really does love the community, enjoys the area, and indulges himself in sharing it with others. After all, being a realtor is more than showing houses; it’s about helping others establish their futures. As for the future of the Climbing Realtor, he’ll be in Vegas, relishing the rock and engaging in his commitment to the community. For anyone interested in getting involved with Las Vegas climbing or any recreation, he encourages them to get out there. While nature must rightfully be respected, it offers a whole depth of being that is unattainable anywhere else. The outdoor community is always welcoming, and its members are always willing to be mentors and champions of others pursuing new goals and skills. So, visit your local climbing gym, join an online hiking group, or reach out to Austin and get out there.

Want to Reduce Your Risk of Alzheimer’s? Avenir Memory Care shares tips for a healthier brain ARTICLE BY AIDA LASHUA | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF AVENIR MEMORY CARE

56

FAM ILY CA R E | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S

Many of us have experienced occasional moments of forgetfulness. “Where did I leave my keys?” “Did I turn the oven off?’ Most of us can admit we have sometimes forgotten someone’s name or that a word is “just on the tip of our tongues.” We joke that we may be experiencing a “senior” moment, but the fact is that many of us will be affected by cognitive issues as we age. According to the Alzheimer’s Association’s 2020 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures, it is estimated that 5.8 million people are living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia in the United States, and Nevada has the third-fastest rate of growth for Alzheimer’s disease. We are privileged in Las Vegas to be home to one of the top 10 neurology centers in the country: the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. Plus, Las Vegas presently has more than two dozen memory care communities, like Avenir Memory Care in Summerlin, available to service the needs of seniors with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. It may surprise you to learn that although researchers believe there may be a genetic component to Alzheimer’s disease, it likely develops from multiple factors, which include genetics, lifestyle, and environment. While some risk factors can’t be changed— like age, family history, and heredity—emerging evidence suggest there may be other factors we can influence. Emely Bitanga, Director of Sales and Marketing at Avenir Memory Care, shared five tips based on work with residents and staff that we can adopt now to potentially reduce our risk of developing Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. 1. Eat your veggies. Not just your veggies. Bitanga stressed the importance meals and snacks play in slowing disease progression. The Avenir Memory Care chefs “make everything from scratch” to ensure residents

consume a well-balanced diet of fresh and non-processed foods like legumes, fruits, cereals, fish, olive oil, low amounts of saturated fats and sodium, dairy products, meat, poultry, and of course vegetables. 2. Make connections. Isolation is one of the worst things for the sick. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, the pandemic contributed to a 17 percent increase in Alzheimer’s and dementia deaths. Staying socially engaged has been shown to protect against Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in later life. At Avenir Memory Care, neighborhoods are designed to group residents by cognitive ability, so everyone feels a sense of community by being surrounded by peers, which encourages friendships, conversations, and social interactions. 3. Get moving - body and mind. According to the Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation, regular physical exercise can reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease by up to 50 percent, and mental exercise may reduce your chance by up to 70 percent. Residents at Avenir Memory Care begin every day with an exercise and stretching session aimed at maintaining the strength and dexterity necessary for daily tasks like dressing and eating. They also participate in regular activities to exercise the mind, like reading, writing, and playing board games. 4. Play with Fido. Studies by the National Library of Medicine found that pets had significant positive effects on disease function and progression, suggesting that having pets supports daily activity and slows Alzheimer’s disease progression. Moreover, animal-assisted intervention improves emotional, social, and cognitive dysfunction in patients with neurodegenerative diseases. At Avenir Memory Care, residents have animal interaction therapy with visits from a local petting zoo.

I get teary-eyed from the time I meet with the families. The connection we make is special and strong. They become friends and share confidences. At the end of the day, what is most gratifying and keeps me motivated is interacting with the residents and seeing their genuine smiles. - Emely Bitanga

5. Rock out. Studies have found that playing a musical instrument throughout life is associated with a lower risk of developing dementia and that musicians were 64 percent less likely to develop mild cognitive impairment or dementia. Music can uniquely activate the brain and stimulate parts of the brain that enhance memory. It can also affect behavioral symptoms such as depression, apathy, agitation, and frustration in Alzheimer’s patients. Bitanga says the benefits are evident during music therapy sessions at Avenir Memory Care when residents recall lyrics and beats. So, rock out, sing, listen to music, and play (or learn to play) a musical instrument. Avenir Memory Care is “Great Place to Work” certified as well as a 2021 “Best of Las Vegas” Gold Winner. The community is intentionally designed to enhance all residents' quality of life, independence, and dignity. “What is important to us is the quality care residents receive,” Bitanga says.

Avenir Memory Care is one of only a few all-inclusive comprehensive memory care facilities in the valley and offers the option of Short-Term Respite Care. The Alzheimer’s Association reports that 48,000 people care for Alzheimer's patients in Nevada. Respite programs provide a viable solution for families unable to afford long-term care rates and for caregivers needing a much-deserved break. Once forgetfulness turns into something more for you or your loved ones, it is comforting to know that Las Vegas has communities like Avenir Memory Care. The information provided should not be used for diagnosing or treating a health problem or disease, and those seeking personal medical advice should consult with a licensed physician. Always seek the advice of your doctor or other qualified health provider regarding a medical condition.

Emely Bitanga finds her work at Avenir extremely rewarding. “I get teary-eyed from the time I meet with the families. The connection we make is special and strong. They become friends and share confidences. At the end of the day, what is most gratifying and keeps me motivated is interacting with the residents and seeing their genuine smiles.”

Tune in to Your New Spa-Like Home Bathroom This year, bring more music into your life by equipping your bathroom with audio ARTICLE BY MELISSA WYATT | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF FERGUSON BATH, KITCHEN & LIGHTING GALLERY As Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery’s Showroom Manager in Las Vegas, I know that almost every manufacturer has incorporated smart home technology – including audio devices – into their bath products, enabling homeowners to be happier than ever. This means the chance to elevate your showering and self-care routine by adding music to the mix.

EQUIPPING YOUR BATHROOM WITH AUDIO DEVICES When used purely for entertainment reasons, adding audio to your bathroom is a great way to create a

spa-like experience at home. You can boost relaxation from the comfort and solitude of the shower by listening to your favorite audiobooks, podcasts, or one of this year's Grammy-nominated comedy or spoken word albums. When you consider the therapeutic benefits of music, perhaps you can wash away stress during your morning or evening rituals. At a minimum, audio in the bathroom provides the added ability to drown out any bathroom noises you don't want to be heard beyond the bathroom door. CONTINUED >

“When you consider the therapeutic benefits of music, perhaps you can wash away stress during your morning or evening rituals.”

In past years, smart audio devices were more for the "wow" factor than actual functionality. Today's devices offer much more beyond streaming and the opportunity for a private (and pretend) shower duet. For example, equipping your bathroom with an audio device such as Google Home or Amazon Alexa can save time for the busy homeowner. The smart device can deliver traffic updates, daily reminders, and remotely preheat breakfast or start your coffee on command. Many homeowners already use these platforms with ease, so connecting a shower, vanity, or toilet and controlling the fixture through voice commands is not entirely foreign. These smart audio devices can provide additional safety measures in a room where water can cause many hazards for family members of all ages. According to Higbee, the ability to use voice commands to control the water temperature to prevent scalds and burns is invaluable for parents of young children.

A GUIDE TO ENJOYING AUDIO IN THE BATHROOM Simple bathroom setup: For a simple bathroom setup, you only need a Wi-Fi connection and power source to connect or charge the device to get started. Here are some examples: • The Kohler Moxie is a showerhead plus wireless, waterproof, and removable speaker combo. The speaker's charging dock has a small footprint and can be placed on your vanity so you can listen to music as you get ready from outside the shower. • Elevate your bathroom experience indoors and outdoors with the Kichler Berryhill lantern. Pair the portable LED lantern with a built-in

64

Bluetooth speaker with your phone or tablet. Then sit back in privacy with an audio system in your privy. Medium complexity, possibly DIY: If you are looking for something a little more sophisticated without a complete remodel, here are several options: • Consider bath fans with an integrated Bluetooth speaker which connects to most Bluetooth-capable audio devices. A bath fan can be a relatively quick and straightforward upgrade. • Many homeowners install recessed lighting with integrated Bluetooth speakers that work with any portable device capable of transmitting audio through wireless technology. You can link up to eight lights for a fuller, richer audio experience. If a home already has bathroom recessed lighting, this is a straightforward way to introduce audio. • One product that has captured homeowners' imagination is Kohler's voice-enabled Verdera Voice mirror. According to Kohler's Konnect smart home product description, it’s "the first-ever bathroom mirror to use this innovative technology to improve your lighting quality, provide entertainment and keep you up-to-date with traffic and weather reports all in one unique piece." So, what's the downside? Despite the potentially awkward side-effect of inviting family sing-a-longs or potentially disturbing your partner with your morning routine, bathroom audio is a great way to satisfy your love of music. Shower off your concerns and share your appreciation for music by enlisting the available equipment around your house.

A GYM TO BUILD YOUR BEST SELF SMASH IRON FITNESS— A PLACE FOR ALL TO HONE THEIR HEALTH AND WELLNESS NECESSITIES

The new year is always a time of beginnings and fulfilling resolutions. Taking care of one’s health–specifically physical fitness–can be a great step towards wellness. The trainers at Smash Iron Fitness support anyone along this path in a custom way for each individual. Consistency is the key component to creating lasting results. Carlo Paredes, personal trainer and owner of Smash Iron Fitness, said, “along with hard work, the small everyday decisions outside these gym doors matter. Not only do we focus on weights, but also the mind and nutritional guidance.

An influx of new gym-goers during the first month of every year is something many fitness trainers experience. With so much motivation to become a new and improved version of oneself, Paredes and the rest of his trainers advise starting small, like going for walks each day, eventually increasing the activity little by little. Whether the client is a bodybuilder, mom, office worker, or student who is just beginning their physical health journey, Paredes believes there is room for all. Even though it has the equipment to support elite athletes, Smash Iron Fitness makes an effort to discard all notions of intimidation, creating an open atmosphere for all levels of exercise. And as an added bonus, their podcast, “Smashcast,” can be an excellent resource for clients looking to connect to inspiring stories and tap into the minds of champions and business moguls. Some people might not know where to begin when it comes to the gym, scaring them away from even trying. “It’s like taking a weight off your shoulders,” Paredes began. “Admitting you don’t know what you’re doing… now it’s time to nurture.” Smash Iron’s personal trainers gauge what each person is already capable of and build from there. Training is an obvious aspect of exercise that comes to mind, but recovery is equally as important. Eventually, Smash Iron Fitness plans CONTINUED >

to open a recovery zone with a sauna and cold plunge, allowing guests to rebuild and rest their bodies. Taking nutritional guidance from personal trainers is another way to keep the body nourished and prepared for exercise. An important and overlooked aspect of exercise is mental strength. Along with fitness training, Smash Iron offers jiu-jitsu training, a Brazilian form of martial arts. Focus and technique are essential in performing jiujitsu properly and are helpful both in and out of the gym. Experts and beginners can obtain a “RoninJitsu Membership,” providing access to all levels of classes, open mat, and the gym. Smash Iron Fitness encourages the community to care for their own bodies. Exercising through resistance training, honing skills in jiu-jitsu, and learning what diet is best for each person’s lifestyle, are all catalysts to feeling the most connected to oneself.

LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

BRUNCH A FTER BA R R E

Snag some of the key details of the outfits here!

Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look. JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . NEET DESIGN GROUP HAS LANDED IN VEGAS MAKING AN IMPACT. Having expanded from Newport Beach, October marked their one year anniversary. But don’t let that fool you- - the word has gotten out! This year they have matched up with investors and completed five AirBnb’s in Las Vegas, Scottsdale, and Cleveland. Nenah Washington is the Principal Designer leading a team of talented designers and artists that outperform by insisting on and delivering desirable spaces that suit the owner/client. “One of my favorite projects is the recently completed Eyediology Vision Care Store in Summerlin. It was time for a refresh and we were able to hone-in on the style of the owners. One of the challenges was the small frame that comes with working on a Boutique. I promise you the smaller dimensions only enhanced our creative efforts. The same holds true for our residential projects; a condo, 2nd home, or spacious floor-plan we deliver style not just trends”. Factor in Nenah’s background in Fashion, her real estate license, her schooling in Interior Design, and it all makes sense. Her well rounded background has blended into a secret sauce leading to a trail of happy clients.
