I was obese for several years of my life. Ten, to be exact. In Brazil, there were no boutiques or brands that carried fashionable and fun clothes for overweight people, so between the ages of 14 and 25, I was forced to wear t-shirts with leggings, sweatpants, or cotton shorts because that was all that would fit me. In the late 90s, I found two brands that had items for me, but they were too expensive, so I kept wearing what I could. Not what I wanted. When I turned 25, I reframed my mindset and started losing weight. After nearly five years of lifestyle changes, I could finally buy affordable, fashion able, and fun clothes that I actually loved. At some point, I had bought so many clothes that the part of my closet where I hung my clothes fell apart. That was when I decided to really understand my body, my style, and my personal colors to create a smarter closet. I became so passionate about fashion and style that it later became what I did for a living. Fashion and style are everywhere - in our clothes, homes, hair, teeth, cars… simply everywhere. That is why this entire issue is dedicated to style. You will read about a local stylist providing tips to move your closet into fall attire, an artist creating beautiful art for your home, dental design, brows and lash styling, and more.

A Coach's Rulebook: ARTICLE BY PATRANYA BHOOLSUWAN Gaining strength and confidence after 40 GET ACTIVE | FITNESS Photo credit: Sherie AlexanderPhoto credit: Justin Poole 22
“I realized doing my coaching online will only take me so far,” said Peterson. “Working at Life Time helped me grow as a coach, and I got to work with all kinds of people of all ages. But working with moms still had a spe cial place in my heart because that was how I started — as a new mom who was losing her identity and needed someone to help guide her. I found my coach, and now I want to be the one to help others.”

Peterson said one of the biggest concerns she heard from moms, especially those in their 40s, is that they struggle to reclaim their identity. In the process of raising their children, they have lost their confidence and a sense of who they really are. Peterson’s coaching style is about helping her clients see that fitness and strength are more than just about losing weight.
And that has always been the motto for this wife and mother of three girls aged 15, 13, and 10: “Doing the best with what you have at the moment.” It was a personal man tra when Peterson launched her small busi ness, RP Fitness and Nutrition, in 2018. She creates custom fitness and nutrition plans for her clients to not only build healthy life long habits but also to change their mindset so they can overcome mental barriers and negative self-talk. The certified fitness and nutrition coach started working with mostly friends in her private home studio before going on to do virtual online nutri tion coaching. She then brought her ser vices to Life Time Fitness in Summerlin in 2019 to expand her circle of clients.
“I decided to compete in the most competi tive weightlifting competition I have ever been in,” said Peterson. “I was sharing a platform with international and Olympic level athletes. Going in, I thought I would be at the bottom since I just barely qualified, but in the end, there were stronger athletes who finished underneath me. I think I just went in super pre pared, and I was ready to do my best.”
“I have made that same mistake at one point where I would just base my results on what I saw in magazines and what celebri ties looked like,” said Peterson. “I want to help my clients see that getting stronger is a personal journey, physically and mentally. In the process of becoming fit and shedding Photo credit: Joel Ramsey
To help create a healthy community here in Southern Nevada and beyond, Peterson uses social media to her advantage. She has an active Facebook group called “Fit and Confident Moms,” where women can get support and a sense of accountability on their health journey. She also has a YouTube Channel where she provides a variety of content, from workout videos to conversations with entrepreneurs and experts in a variety of fields.

unwanted weight, these moms can also rediscover their dreams and goals that they have put aside as they were raising their kids.”
“Working with moms still had a special place in my heart because that was how I started — as a new mom who was losing her identity and needed someone to help guide her. I found my coach, and now I want to be the one to help others.”
“The older I get, the more I feel it’s not too late to dream and go after your goals,” said Peterson. “I used to think that by 30, I was running out of time to do things I wanted to accomplish. Now at 40, I know there’s no end date to set your goals. You can make your own rules. If I can get myself on a platform where I am competing alongside Olympic athletes, having never played sports in my life, I really feel I can do anything I want.”
When traveling, I love to explore and wander around with free dom and curiosity. I’ve never been much of a cruise person. However, my mother-in-law turned 80 earlier this year and decided to take the entire family on a cruise to Alaska. We were a party of almost 30 people, spending an entire week together. It was an amazing experience. Going on a cruise with a large group of people can be fun and interesting!

My husband and I started the trip by spending the weekend in Seattle. We were so lucky to get sunny weather on one of the days—what a spectacular town. There is so much to do and a lot to see. Two days were not enough.
On Monday, we boarded Quantum of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean ship with the capacity for 4,900 people. The ship was cruising in Asia, and it was its first route in the Americas.

Alaska Coastline TRAVEL JOURNAL | TRAVEL28
We made four stops during that week. After spending Tuesday at sea, our first stop was on Wednesday morn ing, where we anchored at Icy Strait Point, Alaska. There we experienced the longest zipline in the world (5,495 feet) with a drop of 1,320 feet. It took us 90 seconds to go from the peak to the bottom traveling at a speed of 65mph. It was a once-in-a-lifetime exhilarating adventure!
In Juneau, the capital of Alaska, we decided to go on a hike through Mendenhall Glacier. In the last 100 years, so many square miles of ice receded, giving space to a beautiful, lush rainforest with waterfalls, birds, bears, and several species of plants.
On Thursday, we stopped at Skagway, a charming old mining town. Our entire group took the Skagway train on the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway. The trip is about 40 miles round trip and takes approximately three hours, going all the way to the Canadian bor der. The scenery is stunning.
After spending the sixth day at sea, we stopped in Victoria, British Columbia. We took a bicycle tour there and visited China Town and the government building before having lunch at a café by the harbor. Victoria is a lively place with its unique archi tecture and colors. This cruise was perfect for getting a taste of Amazing Alaska… we will go back on our own and explore more of one of our country’s most beautiful states, and we encourage you to as well.

“Equipping other women to succeed in our industry is one of my greatest personal satisfactions and joys in life,” declared Nicte. Nicte helps other women through the services she and her team provide. Quality and experience set the NM Brows and Lashes team apart from their competition; they tend to the individ ual beauty needs of each client.
NM Brows and Lashes is also known as the “cutest medspa” in Las Vegas. Nicte’s medspa team includes a medi cal director and registered nurse who provide patient-focused procedures, including Botox, spider vein treat ments, and vampire facials. Trend alert! The biggest trends Nicte is seeing right now are ombre brows and volume lashes. While the biggest misconception Nicte wants to debunk is that microblading does not look natural. “It looks 100% natural,” clarified Nicte. Nicte and her team’s goal is that cli ents leave NM Brows and Lashes at the end of each session feeling healthier and more beautiful.
The goal at NM Brows and Lashes is simple: to provide exceptional results using the most advanced technology and innovative plastic surgery tech niques available today. “Quality should never be compromised. We bring it all to you,” said Nicte. “We are committed to being the only place you need to look great and keep you looking gorgeous!” NM Brows and Lashes is pretty in pink, from its lights to its walls. Step into the “cutest lash and brow studio” in Las Vegas, and you’ll immediately be greeted by a beautiful wall of pink roses and perfect customer service. Lashes and microblading are the two most popular services at Nicte’s studio. Additionally, her team specializes in 3D areola resto ration, body contouring, Brazilian booty lifts, scar and stretch mark camouflage, teeth whitening, and more.
“If you feel beautiful—do it!” Nicte Medrano has made this short phrase the motto of her company. Nicte is the owner of NM Brows and Lashes and the coined “Microblading Queen of Las Vegas.” She is a bilingual leader in the beautifying community and has taken Las Vegas Valley by storm despite only being in the United States for five years. Dedication, passion, and sacrifice are all parts of Nicte Medrano’s success story. She has made a career of helping women succeed, from her team mem bers to her clients. As a business leader, Nicte has pio neered an apprenticeship program cus tomized individually to each student’s schedule and skill level. Miss Medrano understands first-hand how nerve-rack ing starting a career in beauty can be for a young woman, but she also knows hard work pays off, and dedication makes success taste much sweeter. The NM team is prepared to ensure all their apprentices have the founda tion to build their empire successfully.

“Reach higher.” That’s the motto of mod ern-day Renaissance Man, Vital Germaine. Former Cirque du Soleil performer, Vital is a six-time author and owner of ENGAGE Teams 360, where he inspires individuals and orga nizations to “reach higher,” and an accom plished abstract artist.
42
DISCOVERING AND REDISCOVERING THE LOVE OF ART Vital’s journey began while studying at UNLV and CSN when he was a performer at Cirque du Soleil’s Mystere. One spontaneous semester, he enrolled in a beginner drawing class, followed by intermediate and advanced drawing, before his professor recommended that he try painting. He instantly fell in love with the “meditative and therapeutic aspects of such freedom of expression.”

“Over the 25 years of my painting history, I have explored different mediums, techniques, styles, and subject matter,” continued Vital. “The ultimate objective now is to focus on being in the moment, creating something honest, organic, and relevant. I do, nonetheless, enjoy my abstract impressionist interpretation of flo rals. My pure abstracts vary from a calm Zen vibe to raw and frantic chaos.”
ARTABSTRACT
While his work was prominently exhibited in prestigious locations, Vital was heartbroken when his art manager and agent returned all the pieces from various galleries across the US.
A MASTERPIECE THAT TELLS A STORY IN YOUR HOME
You can see Vital Germaine’s art in person this month at an upcoming exhibition at Huntington Jewelers on September 15th and 16th.
“The first vision is triggered by an emotion, a moment in time, a conversation that inspires a feeling,” said Vital. “From there, it’s an organic process to translate that sentiment into a two-dimensional medium that must now appeal to the eye and the heart.”
Germaine’s paintings are vivid stories layered with rich texture, from the calm relaxation of cool hues to the controlled chaos of contrasting colors. The theatrical nature of the illustrated tales on canvas empowers inspiration, empathy, and deep thought. Before purchasing art for your home, consider Vital’s advice: “On a pure business level, 90 percent of purchasing decisions are based on emotions. Our emotions drive our behaviors and life choices.”
Vital’s art is a fusion of abstract impressionism and romanticism. Every creation is an emotional process fueled by expression.
“I didn’t pick up a brush for about ten years,” confessed Vital. “I focused on reinvention and became a keynote speaker, focusing on inspiring organizations to design more open-minded and creativeAlthough, cultures.”during the isolation of the 2020 pandemic, Vital reconnected with paint and canvas and rediscovered his long-lost love. Today, Germaine happily blends his artistic passion with his business endeavors. “I had sup pressed an integral part of who I was without ever realizing the void.”

TREND SETTER STYLE + BEAUTY “There is nothing more satisfying to me than when I get a text message with a photo of a client in an outfit that she has put together, and it is spot on fabulous! That is how I know my work is done.” 48
The first is to have FUN! Sometimes clients can be intimidated to invite me into their closet [which prob ably is one of the most personal spaces in your home], but after our first meeting, they always tell me how much fun it was and not what they expected. I am very respectful of their wardrobes, whether it needs a com plete overhaul or just some editing. I always focus on clients’ wants and how I can best help them. Second, my goal is to inspire and educate. I want my clients to learn everything I know from me so they can become their style experts after my work is complete. What corporate clients do you work with, and what do you do for them?

Kim Groberg has known from a young age that she loved fashion. At three years old, she would hand-pick her outfits. As she grew older, she would attach prices to the clothes in her closet and pretend she owned a store. Needless to say, Kim was born a fashionista!
ARTICLE BY LIZA RUAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY HAILEY PETERSEN
Coming from a very corporate background and my previous work in HR, I bring a unique perspective to corporate wardrobe sessions. I understand corporate culture and the challenges and complexities of dress code and branding. Whether I am working with a large realtor office and conducting a lunchtime workshop or working with a hotel on The Strip and helping their front desk staff dress more professionally while keeping within the brand “culture,” I am able to tailor my pre sentations and workshops accordingly.
Q&A WITH STYLIST KIM GROBERG
For this issue, Groberg provided readers some insight into the style industry and need-to-know fashion tips to lead into fall. What is it you love most about what you do? I love helping women feel confident in how they pres ent themselves through their style. One of my favorite stories is when I started working with one of my clients [who is a senior executive in the gaming industry]. She told me she didn’t have confidence in how she looked and always wanted a stylist to help her. When I asked what kind of look she wanted to achieve, she mentioned another woman executive who she worked with and admired how stylish she was. About six months later, my client told me she went to a meeting that day, and the other woman commented on how fabulous SHE looked. My client thanked me for giving her the confidence she was seeking to dress with style and still be herself. Nothing makes me happier than impacting women in a way like this client. What can a client expect when working with you?
Born and raised in New York, Groberg’s career began in human resources working for major corporations like PepsiCo before pursuing her dream career in fashion. Since starting her fashion career, Groberg has worked with pivotal brands like Neiman Marcus, Escada, Valentino, Mulberry, and Dior before opening a boutique located in Henderson that would later be named one of Las Vegas’ Top 100 businesses by Las Vegas Magazine, as well as mentioned in the Wall Street Journal. She said she closed the boutique to become a mother; however, it wasn’t long before she created her current company, “High Style for A Hundred.” The business’s name was inspired by her motto, “spend a hundred, look like a million.” Starting as a personal shopping business, the brand evolved into working with luxury retail and producing non-profit fashion shows. Today, High Style for A Hundred offers closet edits and helps clients develop new wardrobes by “shopping” what already exists in their closets.

JEWELRY. As you know, here in Las Vegas, we have two “real” seasons…summer and winter. So, we have to be more creative with transitioning our wardrobes, especially in the spring and fall. In Vegas, fall weather is typically still in the 90s, so we don’t get to wear our sweaters and fabulous layers until closer to winter. My two key strategies are to 1. Focus on the color and fabric of your clothing, and 2. Switch up your acces sories, such as your shoes, handbags, and jewelry.
What are your tips for transitioning our closets from summer to fall?
I typically transition my closet twice each season with an initial “edit” and a com plete wardrobe transition afterward. For the transition from summer to fall, I do my first edit on September 1st and take out all my summer fabrics like seersucker and terrycloth as well as any prints, silhouettes, and accessories that scream “summer,” such as straw handbags and canvas totes. Keep colors such as navy, black, jewel tones, and brights that transition well into fall palettes like orange, yellow, and brown. For instance, you might put away your seersucker blazer, but keep out that fabulous orange linen duster. An easy way to look at it is by consid ering what items you would take on your summer vacation to the beach. Those are the items that it is time to put away.
If you could sum up your fashion advice in just a couple of sentences, what might that be? It is not the amount of clothes in your closet or how much you spend on a label or brand that will make you fashion able — it is knowing how to style and create looks that are YOU. I have gotten more com pliments on outfits I have put together with fashion finds from a thrift store than on one of my high-end designer pieces like Valentino or Dior. This is because when you walk into a room, your confidence will make what you’re wearing FABULOUS, not the label. It’s all about your personal style and owning it with confidence and grace. For Fall 2022, one of the key trends you will see is a simple white tank. A white tank is perfect as you can wear it as a staple all summer and later throughout fall when you can add your maxi hemlines and leather pieces — both of which are also fall trends.
TWO “REAL” SEASONS.

EDIT. Jewelry is another great way to transition your wardrobe from season to sea son. In the summer, we tend to keep our accessories lighter. As you transition to fall, a bold necklace can enhance that navy sleeveless sheath dress that was your go-to for work all summer. Simply putting on a chunky necklace and changing your shoes from a sandal to a pump can elevate your fall look while still keeping you cool in 90-degree weather.

“The more time spent in the home, the more we’ve all reflected not only on how our homes looked but also truly took into consideration the creature comforts, the mix of form and function,” said Jessie Fogarty from LG Gallery, a Las Vegas bou tique home furnishings store. Fogarty noted that customers are also mixing met als and finishes, eschewing the notion that they have to stick to one style.

From avocado green refrigerators and shag carpet to chintz wallpaper and preppy pastels, the way a home is designed and decorated reflects the style and values of the time. What’s important in that decade is often highlighted through interior design, from centering the living room around game tables in the 1800s to stately radios that took center stage in the living rooms of the 30s and 40s. It should come as no surprise then that current home trends have been solidly influenced by the drastic increase
Customers combine wood and stones, fibers and metals, antiques, and contem porary pieces, curating their spaces to make them their own. “A more eclectic look [rather] than being married to just one rigid style is becoming more common and where we at LG Gallery find the most excitement. The personality being appar ent in design is what makes the house a home,” she said. That personality is being infused in differ ent ways throughout the home, especially as millennials move into the housing mar ket and lean into more traditional brands and styles - some of which were favored by their mothers and grandmothers.
“The millennial generation, and even Gen Z, is embracing MacKenzie-Childs,” said Fogarty referring to the colorful hand-painted furnishing and decor brand perhaps most distinguishable for their black and white courtly check pattern, accented by bold pops of color. “Their influence can be seen across social media in the homes of influencers, adding visual pops to recipe videos on TikTok, and in popular culture in the kitchens of reality TV stars,” said Fogarty. Las Vegas Realtor Traci Human of Traci Human LV Homes has also noted that “the wave of grey has definitely finished, but homebuyers still prefer neutral tones throughout,” looking for a blank canvas to make their own. Bold uses of color incorporated into home decor choices aren’t the only ways younger generations of homeowners are shifting away from a sea of neutrals.
“While both traditional and contempo rary styles are heavily apparent in the Las Vegas Valley, there’s no denying that the newer contemporary styles paired with dark frames are dominating the younger mainstream market,” said Jessica Wells from HyBar, a local window, and door installation company. Dark colors are turning up elsewhere in the home as well. Gone are the white kitchens of the 2010s. Instead, customers are opting for dark oak, wood colors, gray, and mochaccino matte options, according to Euro Kitchen Cabinets’ Georg Wyink, who has found mixing various textures and colors together for slab panel doors also to be incredibly popular recently.

Marrying textures, colors, and even metals together in unexpected ways goes hand in hand with another trend popping up in Las Vegas area homes: integrating the outdoors with the home’s interior.
For the past two and a half years, people have sought ways to be outside. By incorporating window walls, they can bring the outdoors in and “transform your home entirely as we tear down blank walls and replace them with massive multi-slide or folding doors, redefining the essence of your entire home,” said Wells.
OPEN HOUSE | HOME + DESIGN56
“One of the most common remodeling projects that pique our clients’ interest is our window wall installation services,” said Wells referring to HyBar’s large move able window walls. “We find that most people enjoy the clear views and natural light that large window walls provide while staying cool in the comfort of their own homes.”
It’s the perfect trend considering Las Vegas’ heat and for entertaining at home – which is also on the rise. According to
Homeowners are reclaiming vertical
Fogarty has also seen an uptick in customers looking for kitchen and decor items specifically for entertaining pur poses. “As we find ourselves in the posi tion to entertain more in smaller groups at home overwhelmingly, we on the retail side are seeing a renewed interest in serv ing pieces, table linens - everything that elevates even a basic gathering to a spe cial event,” she said.

Wyink, his clients are only interested in open-concept kitchens packed with tech nology upgrades like sound systems so that they can entertain because “with a closed kitchen, it’s not possible,” he said.
On the real estate side, Human says that open floor plans continue to be the preferred floor plan, “people enjoy entertaining and gathering in large open spaces,” she said. Another trend still firmly entrenched is the need for a home office space, a craze that began in 2020 and has only increased as remote work has become the status quo for many. Homebuyers are also seeking out homes with flexible space options, “having a loft or additional bed room space is still popular as a lot of our clients are working from home.” Room for entertaining and working isn’t the only space Las Vegas homeown ers are interested in these days. There’s also a growing trend when it comes to garages and residential parking options.
The seamless integration of technology throughout the home is an enduring home design trend that continues to hold strong. From larger-scale implementations, including easy-to-operate garage car lifts, and automated moveable window walls that operate with the touch of a button on a smartphone, to installing tech-savvy appli ances and ring doorbells, this is one trend that will only continue to grow. After all, it started with that singular radio holding court in the living room.

OPEN HOUSE | HOME + DESIGN wasted space in the garage and even in the ground for additional vehicles by installing residential lifts and car parking solutions – something especially helpful in the scorching desert heat. “People are learning that they have the ability to park more cars in their garages than they currently do now,” said Laura JonesZwick of Expert Automotive Equipment/ Residential Parking Solutions. This is helpful not just for getting additional cars out of the sun, but also when it comes to vehicle parking limits imposed by homeowners associations. “It’s less expensive than most people think and easy to operate,” said Zwick.

HOW TO | TRAVEL IF YOUR LUGGAGE GETS LOST Style Won’t Matter
TRAVEL TIPS
PICTURE THIS: 64
The rumors are true. Traveling in 2022 is a nightmare! I experienced it firsthand. I now endearingly refer to the adventure as the “Red Luggage Odyssey.” My Greece vacation is finally here! I’m attending a six-day yoga retreat on the beautiful island of Amorgos, Greece. I am ecstatic! The retreat was postponed twice due to the global pandemic, and the time had finally arrived to enjoy this overdue vacation. As a professional photographer, I typ ically travel with a carry-on ONLY! But I will be in Europe for ten days, so I make an exception. I decided to check in my lug gage — BIG MISTAKE! My flight from Las Vegas to Zurich was delayed, which caused a domino effect. I landed in Zurich as my flight to Mykonos was boarding. I had to run through the terminal just to make my connection. I arrived in Mykonos and prayed to the Greek Gods that my luggage had made it. Unfortunately, it did not. Dressed in PJs and sandals (to be comfortable on the red eye), I waited in line to speak to an overwhelmed agent. Eventually, I’d be told that the airline is experiencing a high number of lost luggage, and they are unsure when I will receive mine. I started to panic. I was only in Mykonos for two days and had to catch a ferry to a different island. How was I going to get my stuff? FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
To make matters worse, I made a basic 101 packing mistake, which doubled as a photographer’s mistake – I packed two of my professional lenses in my check-in bag. I was so disappointed in myself as I knew better than to pack any valuable items for check-in luggage. I arrived at the hotel and told my con cierge that I had no toiletries or clothes.
Thankfully, Mykonos is the Las Vegas of the Greek Isles, and I was informed that stores stay open late, and I could find everything in Little Venice. Therefore, I went on a shopping adventure for a change of clothes, toiletries, and a bathing suit.
The experience was unique and one I will never However, forget.with this in mind, I wanted to share some important travel tips, so you don’t have the same fate:

10. Most importantly, don't forget to enjoy your vacation!
I continued on with my trip, still wait ing for notice of my luggage. I borrowed friends’ clothes and made do. Fast forward to the end of my trip, I finally received my luggage on my last day in Greece.
5. Always exchange currencies before trav eling to have the current currency ready.
8. Make the best of your circumstances.

9. Be flexible, adapt, and overcome.
3. Pack your essential toiletries, change of clothes, undergarments, and swimsuits in your carry-on.
1. If you can travel with just a carry-on, do so!
4. NEVER pack any Valuables in your check-in bag!!!
6. Purchase luggage tracking devices online – for example, AIR TAGS.
