I Love Local!
February 2022 PUBLISHER
Camilla Dorand | camilla.dorand@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Paige Candee | paige.candee@citylifestyle.com
“Love is in the air, everywhere I look around … Love is in the air, every sight and every sound” - John Paul Young In the spirit of LOCAL LOVE, this issues’ theme, and as your new publisher, I would like to share with you a little bit about why I took over Red Rock City Lifestyle. I am originally from Brazil, and after moving around the United States for four years to find a place called home, my husband and I landed in Summerlin in 2017. We decided we wanted to live close to Red Rock Canyon because we absolutely fell in love with the neighborhood and everything it has to offer. Driving around the area with those pink and orange skies at the end of the day is just too special to pass… I am thrilled to have been chosen by our former and founding publisher, Cristine Lindholm, to take over the magazine and honored to share why she chose me: "Camilla's love of people, life, and our community is undeniable,” said Cristine Lindholm, West Coast Regional Director of City Lifestyle. “She is genuine to her core. When considering her as my successor, it became evident that she cares about the success of others way before her own! I believe the magazine and our community will benefit from her leadership." I love bringing people together and helping them make their dreams come true. And I intend to continue to bring the same great content and enthusiasm for our community as my predecessor has done. Our LOCAL LOVE issue brings you stories about people who love what they do and our community. You will be able to read how a veterinarian’s love for cats prompted her to open the puurrrfect Summerlin Cat Hospital. You can find the perfect ring and other very unique pieces for the important people in your life at Huntington Jewelers. And you can read about the Subaru Love Promise supporting our local community. And, you will absolutely fall in love with our local saxophone player Justin Young. In February, love is definitely in the air, and I hope that you carry it throughout the rest of the year. From my heart to yours,

TWO LOCAL RESTAURANTS TO LOVE OSTERIA FIORELLA OSTERIA FIORELLA BRINGS AWARD WINNING ITALIAN CUISINE AND A CELEBRITY CHEF TO THE RED ROCK CASINO RESORT AND SPA When renowned Chef Marc Vetri opened Osteria Fiorella at the Red Rock Casino Resort and Spa, it was a dream come true for many locals. Having a James Beard Award-winning chef in their neighborhood was almost inconceivable in the past. Marc’s Italian roots and travels come to light as Osteria Fiorella combines Old World heritage and a touch of Las Vegas flare. Chef Marc Vetri is a culinary genius. Vetri is the chef/founder of Philadelphia’s acclaimed Vetri Cucina. Within two years of the restaurant’s debut, he was named one of Food & Wine’s “Best New Chefs.” He received the Philadelphia Inquirer’s highest restaurant rating, which the restaurant maintained during a re-review in 2018. In 2005, Marc received the James Beard Award for “Best Chef Mid-Atlantic.” Vetri is not just all about the culinary world. He is the force behind the Vetri Community Partnership, a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower children and families through fresh food and education. He is also the author of four cookbooks, his latest being “Mastering Pizza,” released in 2018. Osteria Fiorella is convivial and quite lively at times, inspired by Fiorella, Marc’s highly regarded pasta bar in the heart of Philadelphia’s historic Italian Market. The main dining room is expansive and opens on
a beautiful outdoor patio with views of Red Rock Canyon in the distance. Osteria Fiorella’s centerpiece is a large bar where guests can catch their favorite sports team. Guests can always enjoy a selection of antipasti and salads, handmade pasta, signature pizzas, charcoal-cooked meat and fish, and authentic desserts daily. Brunch is a big deal these days, and Osteria Fiorella steps right up serving favorites, such as Cacio e Pepe Breakfast Pizza. And of course, signature dishes that include Sal’s Meatballs (an homage to Marc’s father) and Fiorella Sausage, a time-honored recipe handed down by the original proprietors of Fiorella’s Philadelphia flagship. Osteria Fiorella’s daily menu features salad, antipasti, pizza, pasta, charcoal-cooked meat, fish, and dessert. Weekend brunch satisfies every craving with inspired interpretations of customary brunch fare, from sweet ricotta French toast to savory biscuit egg sandwiches to “morning after” pizzas. There is so much to love, but some things are a must. Begin with Sal’s Meatballs with whipped ricotta and garlic durum focaccia, or keep it traditional with Crispy Octopus. Why not show your culinary devotion to a rich Ricotta Gnocchi featuring brown butter and crispy leeks. Our beloved Carnivores will devour Verti’s Pappardelle, a braised beef short rib with a pure passion on a plate with tangy horseradish. One can’t help but fall in CONTINUED >

love with their Cannelloni with rich pork ragù, bechamel, and herbs. For bigger appetites, dive into a think Double R Ranch Ribeye served with shallot agrodolce and parmesan. Osteria’s Bone-in Veal Parmigiana with Bufala mozzarella and San Marzano tomato sauce will bring a smile to your face and please your palate. Being Italian, a fish course of delicious Branzino served with a touch of shaved fennel, arugula, and olive salad is a bright choice. There isn’t anything better than brunching al fresco, and they do it right. Smoked Trout with creme cheese, red onion, capers, and trout roe is a brilliant way to get the brunch started. The lovely creative Eggs in Purgatory with San Marzano tomatoes and focaccia is exceptional and will certainly make you return to refresh your memory of this dish. Osteria Fiorella features a splendid beverage program as well. The wine a beer list is all of your preferences and a few pleasant surprises that keep revolving to keep the selections fresh and exciting. The cocktail program is a creative as the main Fiorella menu. The Ol’ Pal Sal; Rittenhouse rye, Campari, Montanaro served extra dry is a favorite. For a more traditional yet artistic, the Negroni Arancia with malty gin, Cinzano 1757and aperitivo select or their Chocolate Negroni; a nice blend of spring 44 gin, cacao nib-infused Campari Cinzano 1757, and Tempus fugit cacao ala vanilla are both impressive. Osteria Fiorella is the perfect place to show true love on Valentines Day with a special menu just for your loved ones.

EDO TAPAS AND WINE “THEY REPRESENT MY CULTURE; I WANT TO BRING THE EXPERIENCE OF EATING IN BARCELONA TO MY CUSTOMERS AND DELIVER THE BEST COMBINATIONS, AWAKENING SENSES TO NEW FLAVORS, AROMAS, AND TEXTURES, ULTIMATELY CREATING NEW MEMORIES FOR MY GUESTS.” CHEF OSCAR AMADOR EDO AND EDO TAPAS AND WINE WILL TAKE YOU TO BARCELONA BITE AFTER BITE EDO Tapas and Wine has made quite a name for itself tucked away in China Town in Las Vegas. At the helm is Chef Oscar Amador Edo. Being raised in Barcelona, Chef Amador Edo fell in love with Catalonia’s rich culinary traditions at an early age. He grew up “10 minutes away from the Mediterranean where the quality of the seafood is unbelievable,” he said. After graduating from the prestigious Hofmann BCN Chef School, he was offered the opportunity to stage at El Racó de Can Fabes, a three Michelin Star awarded restaurant, and jumped at the chance. Over the years, he has been quite successful in owning and operating Ajo Negro, TapeArt, and A Mano for more than a decade. It was that success that drove him to move to Las Vegas and offer up his culinary delights to enlighten the American palate. Once again, he found himself in one of the most prestigious kitchens in the city, Le Cirque where he stayed for six months before moving on to launch his s catering business and then EDO Tapas & Wine in 2018. Looking over the menu, one can see his approach to Chef’s approach is to add a modern, innovative twist to classic Spanish recipes. His passion is to cook oysters, uni, clams, mussels, octopus, and turbot, which jumps off the menu. “They represent my culture; I want to bring the experience of eating

in Barcelona to my customers and deliver the best combinations, awakening senses to new flavors, aromas, and textures, ultimately creating new memories for my guests,” he added. EDO Gastro Tapas & Wine is inspired by Spain’s tradition of eating small savory dishes, typically served with drinks, and we were ready to explore. Beginning with the Iberico Charcuterie Board is a wonderful way to awaken your palate for a journey through Spain. It consists of decadent 100 percent Bellota Selections that include, Paletilla, Salchichón, Lomo & Chorizo and Artisanal Cheeses (chef’s daily choice). Cold appetizer all-stars would have to be the Tokio Oysters with trout Roe, Pico, and Ponzu. Why not continue the beginning of your culinary journey with outstanding Peruvian Bay Scallops fermented in tomato water and Yuzu Escabeche for the final touch? For a real flare of Spain, Tcxangurro; at traditional Blue Crab Sofrito with Oloroso Sherry and Potato Espuma will have you saying OLE! With so many brilliant entrees to choose from, dive into chef’s Cuttlefish Carbonara with Sepia Tagliatelle, Jamón Ibérico, and rich Pecorino Romano Cheese. Dive right into Barcelona itself and indulge in a Suckling Pig Terrine with braised artichokes, shallots, salsif, and charcutière sauce. For the FINI, it’s all about love with a nicely prepared flan, a traditional custard, caramel, lemon curd.
Great restaurants usually have a happy hour to get things rolling in the right direction. EDO is no exception. Stop in Monday through Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and enjoy house red or white wine for $6.00 or a handcrafted cocktail of the day for $7.00. Happy hour is also a great chance to savor 50 percent off on selected items. For those who love cocktails, you can’t do wrong with the Embajador. An exciting blend of Lemba Agricole Rum, Lemon Yzaguirre Dry Vermouth, Rosemary Syrup and Kiwi Purée. Additionally, the tasty Junquera with Mahón Gin, a Rosemary Sprig, Yzaguirre Sweet Vermouth and Green Chartreuse is a must try. For those that don’t venture out to China Town often there is some great news. Chef Amador is opening Anima, which is the Spanish word for soul in the Gramercy very soon, which will have a different twist on the EDO offerings. Chef Amador is all about passion. Why show your significant other love and bring out their passion with a Valentines menu they will adore?

Subaru.
More Than A Car Company
(TM)
SUBARU OF LAS VEGAS is located in the heart of exciting Las Vegas, Nevada at 6455 Roy Horn Way. As a proud member of the Findlay Automotive Group, we are your premier source for NEW, USED, and CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED (CPO) Subaru vehicles in Southern Nevada. 1.9% Financing on select new 2022 models for well qualified buyers.
Power adventure with the Subaru SUV of electric vehicles. The most technologically advanced Subaru we’ve ever made is here. Built on our first-ever all-electric architecture – the e-Subaru Global Platform – the 2023 Subaru Solterra, named by combining the Latin words for “sun” and “earth,” is the first AWD electric vehicle to feature the legendary standard capability of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Packed with next-generation features inside and out, the Solterra offers 8.3 inches of ground clearance, a stunning available 12.3-inch touchscreen, state-ofthe-art active safety, and the trusted reliability of a Subaru in a zero-emissions, all-electric SUV. The 2023 Solterra features a comprehensive suite of active safety features to help protect you on every drive. A 360-degree surround-view camera system is available for enhanced convenience and safety when parking and reversing. The Blind-
Spot Detection system warns you with a visual indicator on each side mirror if it senses a vehicle in your blind spots. Rear CrossTraffic Alert helps warn you of traffic approaching from the side as you back up. And with Reverse Automatic Braking, the Solterra can even stop itself to help avoid objects behind you[8]. Safety Exit Alert, an all-new feature available for the Solterra, will beep and display a message if it detects danger when you are trying to open your door. The StarDrive powertrain gives you an estimated range of over 220 miles with standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive as well as a variety of options for fast and convenient charging, both at home and on the go. The Solterra comes with a charger that works with any standard 120V outlet for Level 1 charging, and you can have a 240V Level 2 charger installed for even faster charging. Either way you charge, you can wake up each morning to a full battery and all of the legendary capability of a Subaru, which means you’re ready for any adventure.
When you’re out on an adventure you have access to over 38,000 public charging stations across the country with Level 2 or Level 3 DC fast-charge options. Solterra features DC fast-charge capability that when paired with a L3 charger gives you 80% of your battery capacity in less than an hour. So you can go almost anywhere and find a quick, convenient charger nearby. The Solterra lets you explore the outdoors and help protect it at the same time. The advanced StarDrive powertrain means no tailpipe emissions and no need for gasoline or oil changes, so every mile has significantly less impact on the environment. The Solterra is the latest example of our commitment to safeguarding the natural world we all share – and it’s just the beginning. It may be the first of its kind, but the 2023 Solterra is still a Subaru at heart. You can trust a Subaru vehicle for miles and miles of adventure – 96% of Subaru vehicles sold in the last 10 years are still on the road today, more than any other brand in the industry.

The Subaru Love Promise and the local company’s year-round dedication to being a positive force in the community

“We believe in being a positive force in the community where we live and work, not just with donations, but with actions that set an example for others to follow,” declared Jennifer. Subaru of Las Vegas is a proud member of the Findlay Automotive Group. Beyond the obvious reputation of selling great vehicles, Subaru of Las Vegas provides top-notch service to Nevada drivers backed by their Subaru Love Promise. In honor of our “Local Love” theme this month, we interviewed Assistant General Manager Jennifer Vitale to learn more about locally-owned Subaru of Las Vegas’ Subaru Love Promise. According to her, the Love Promise is Subaru’s way of spreading hope and love as far as possible. “There are five pillars under the Subaru Love Promise; Subaru Loves the Earth, Subaru Loves to Care, Subaru Loves to Help, Subaru Loves Learning, and Subaru Loves Pets,” Jennifer explained. “That’s why we work with a diverse range of organizations; it’s an integral part of our existence.” Subaru has taken the concept of selling vehicles and turned it into a way to give back to the community. On a national level, they host The Subaru Share The Love Event and partner with multiple non-profits organizations throughout the year. “On a direct level, we also like to create opportunities to connect with individuals in the community through our own initiatives,” Jennifer explained. “To share a few of the many, we have our Road To College
Scholarship where a local high school senior gets selected to receive a $10,000 scholarship for their postgraduate education, our Save A Pet Program where a local will receive financial assistance for their pet that might be in need, and our Hometown Hero program where we honor a local first responder who has made a difference in someone’s life.” The Subaru family believes people are the true heartbeat of this city, and giving back to the community is the right thing to do. They partner with likeminded organizations to make as big of a positive impact as possible. “We believe in being a positive force in the community where we live and work, not just with donations, but with actions that set an example for others to follow,” declared Jennifer. You’ll often find her and other Subaru of Las Vegas employees getting involved in giving back. They volunteer at The Just One Project to load free groceries into vehicles of families in need. They visit children in the hospital during the holiday season to bring them love and joy. It’s all part of the Subaru Love Promise. Findlay Subaru of Las Vegas genuinely believes in building lifelong relationships with customers with integrity and compassion, which is why you’ll find more than just a car there—you’ll find family.

The Summerlin Sax Man “There will always be a place for music,” said Justin Young. “No matter what happens in the world, every song tells a story and people love to hear great music!” A lot has happened over the last two years. In Justin Young’s world, he moved his entire family into a new place to call home-Summerlin-with a chance to build his dream studio and a new community to embrace. Yes, there is always a place for music. It’s consoling or uplifting; it’s a memory or a mood. That’s what Justin delivers. His passion for all types of music flows right out of his sax and into the hearts of his captured audiences. He grew up deeply rooted in music in the suburbs of Motown - Detroit. His father, Jim Young is the charismatic, long time band leader of world-renowned “Kaleidoscope” perhaps, foretelling their family’s story. There were often rehearsals in his living room with legendary musicians coming and going. Justin didn’t just learn the entertainment side of the industry, though. His parents instilled in him a strong work ethic. He would often be found winding cables or growing to understand the marketing or financial part of the entertainment business. Musical talent came naturally, playing drums from a young age. He was gifted a soprano saxophone at the tender age of nine, which proved to be magical. By the time he was 15, he was playing on stage with his dad’s band and booking solo gigs.

JUSTIN YOUNG'S STORY OF FAMILY, LOVE, AND MUSIC WOVEN TOGETHER LIKE COLORS OF A KALEIDOSCOPE ARTICLE BY MARY M. ZUKOWSKI PHOTOGRAPHY BY RACHITA DHAKAL
“There will always be a place for music,” said Justin Young. “No matter what happens in the world, every song tells a story and people love to hear great music!”
Those gigs helped him earn an engineering degree from Michigan State University, leading to a corporate career in Seattle, Los Angeles, and Oklahoma. But his soul belonged to performing, and through those years, he never stopped writing, producing, and performing music. He is truly happiest when he’s engaging an audience, flashing his genuinely brilliant smile, holding an impossibly long note, and sharing his passion.

When the pandemic arrived, it created time to reflect, focus, and reshape the future like many of us. The draw of Las Vegas and its rich entertainment culture was enticing. The glamourous history of the Rat Pack is a definite vibe here. Justin is married to his high school sweetheart, Rachel, and together they were charmed by Summerlin’s great schools, warm sunshine, and energy. The Young’s decided Vegas was a perfect fit for their family. Justin dove right in and frequently plays at Frankie’s Uptown in Downtown Summerlin. He has met many talented locals at the Composer’s Showcase of Las Vegas. He’s earned high praise from local royalty Clint Holmes and is proud to have sold out his very own show at the Summerlin Performing Arts Center. He has quickly found success and is loving life here. In his Summerlin studio, “Justntime,” history continues to play out as his father is mixing at the board, his daughter Vivienne is singing, and his son Tyler is playing the saxophone at his side. In a unique and powerful moment, three generations are sharing the gift of music. If you’re walking in Downtown Summerlin you might catch the velvety tones of Justin’s sax floating from Franikie’s Uptown, you might see him at a corporate event, Composer’s Showcase, or hear him on air-on social media channels. This year, “Justin Young Sax” is set to release a seventh album, score a movie, and hopes to expand his reach into the community to perform at more local corporate events. Now at the helm of the family music biz, Justin’s story is of family, love, and music all woven together like colors in a “Kaleidoscope.”
Three generations of talent working together: Jim, Justin, Tyler (12), and Vivienne (8)

THE BUSINESS OF LOVE: JENNY O OF HUNTINGTON JEWELERS SHARES PASSION BEHIND LONG-TIME RED ROCK BUSINESS ARTICLE BY PATRANYA BHOOLSUWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTOPHER REISTROFFER

“FOR ME, LOVE IS NOT JUST ABOUT HUSBAND AND WIFE. BOYFRIEND AND GIRLFRIEND. THERE ARE ALL SORTS OF LOVE STORIES IN MY LINE OF WORK, AND I GET TO BE A PART OF TELLING THEM. THAT’S WHAT MAKES THIS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL INDUSTRY.”
When it comes to love, “Jenny O” knows a thing or two about this four-letter word. “For me, love is not just about husband and wife. Boyfriend and girlfriend. There are all sorts of love stories and in my line of work, and I get to be a part of telling them. That’s what makes this such a beautiful industry.” The fine jewelry industry is one that Jennifer Calleri knows well. Better known to her family and friends as “Jenny O,” her name and sparkling reputation have been tied with Huntington Jewelers since she and her husband took over the business in 2018. “Huntington has been around for more than 70 years. It’s an institution. The people who started this place are legends in this industry, and I am proud to have been mentored by them. But I do bring my own brand to this business, and that’s what makes us stand out here in the Red Rock area and across Southern Nevada.” That personal touch, according to Jenny O, is a combination of experience and passion for this industry which she’s been involved with for more than two decades. A graduate gemologist, Jenny O has traveled the world and seen some of the most beautiful diamonds and gems. But she said the best part about her work is being part of the love stories that come with each piece of jewelry and each client she works with. “Jewelry is like an artifact of life,” said Jenny O. “People are sentimental. There’s so many emotions and meaning that go into a piece jewelry, and I get emotional as well when I work with my clients to create pieces that are really customized to them.” One recent love story that tugged at her heartstrings is one of a friend in the jewelry business that Jenny O has known for many years. He’s in his 80’s and had come into the store for help after losing his wife of nearly 40 years. CONTINUED >

“He was lost. He didn’t know where to start. He had many pieces of jewelry that needed to be sorted out, and he wanted to give some special pieces to his daughter and granddaughters.” Jenny O, of course, helped him with the meaning and history of the jewelry pieces so he could better decide where their legacy should continue. She also summoned her expertise to create a new ring that combined her client’s wedding band with his late wife’s. “What I create is wearable art with a story to go with it.” Jenny O’s own love story is also one that comes with its own Vegas twist. She met her now-husband and mother-, father-, and sister-in-law all at the same time when she was working at a jewelry store at the Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas. “I was in my early 20’s. My husband and his family were in town visiting from Texas. I was standing outside the store next to him watching newly married couples on the gondolas. We started talking. His parents were
actually in my store! He later moved to town, and we got married a few years later.” The couple now runs Huntington Jewelers together. Jenny O says this business definitely has a woman’s touch, and it’s important for her, given the fine jewelry industry is still mainly a male-dominated business. “I love working with women, and our target market is women,” said Jenny O. “I know what women want. I do have this gift at looking at my ‘muse’ and I can tell what jewelry will work with their face, their frame, their skin color. We can find a piece that fits anyone.” As for how her love story for this business and the jewelry industry will take shape in 2022? “I want to keep building on these beautiful relationships that we have with our clients,” said Jenny O. “We don’t just sell you something and you are gone. You become part of the family. People are sending us cakes, cards, cookies, and chocolates all the time. Especially during special holidays. That’s what I love about what I do. It’s amazing.”

Summerlin Cat Hospital, located at Trails Village, 9691 Trailwood Drive, is a new full-service, fear-free cat care hospital in the community of Summerlin. Its mission is to take the “pet” out of petrified. Dr. Anna Daffara is a feline veterinarian with an “unrelenting passion and curiosity for feline care.” She and her team use certain tactics to help cats relax –for a stress-free visit. Cats need special attention, especially when it comes to preventative care, as yearly check-ups are important due to most diseases being caught during basic exams. “Over the past year, I have noticed there has been an increasing number of cats seen at animal hospitals. And I wanted a place that could elevate some fear and anxiety for those individual cats,” Dr. Daffara said. “I love to see cats thrive. I love seeing kittens and then as they get older. It’s fun to watch their transformation and treat them year after year.” Dr. Daffara has been practicing in the field of veterinary medicine for more than 16 years and recently opened her own practice specializing in August of 2021. Her expertise includes being a member of the American Association of Feline Practitioners and holding certifications in both Fear Free and Feline Friendly Handling.
MEETING THE NEEDS OF YOUR CAT – FIVE PILLARS OF A HEALTHY FELINE ENVIRONMENT, BY DR. ANNA DAFFARA Environmental needs include a cat’s physical surroundings encompassing indoors, outdoors as well as social interactions with people and other pets. Meeting environmental needs may avoid stressors that can cause unwanted behaviors and impact mental health. 1. Provide a safe place such as a cardboard box preferably with sides around it, raised off the ground, and a roof to enable the cat to feel safe and secure. The cat should have the ability to exit and enter the space from at least two sides if it feels threatened. There should be at least as many safe places sized to hold a single cat as there are cats in a household. Your cat’s safe place is a private area that allows it to retreat and feel protected; it provides a sense of security. Cats like to get up high where they can observe their environment, especially when there’s been a change or when they are frightened. Provide your cat with a few different options, including open resting spaces such as shelves or windowsills, as well as enclosed resting spaces such as high-sided beds or boxes. You can encourage your cat to use these spaces by making them comfortable, for example, by covering the area with fleece bedding. 2. Provide multiple and separated key environmental resources such as food, water, litter boxes, scratching areas, play areas, and resting/sleeping areas. These areas should be separated from one another, so all cats have free access without challenges from other cats in a household. CONTINUED >

3. Provide the opportunity for play and predatory behavior. This behavior allows cats to fulfill their natural need to hurt. This can be accomplished with the use of interactive toys that mimic prey, such as feather and fur toys. Introduce interactive play, so they learn to avoid going after your hands and feel for play. Use food puzzles or food balls to mimic the action of hunting for prey. This requires considerable physical activity and mental engagement. 4. Provide positive, consistent, and predictable human-cat social interaction. This can be seen as interactions such as petting, grooming, being played with or talked to, being picked up, and sitting or lying on a person’s lap. It is important to remember that every cat interacts differently and to respect the cat’s individual preferences. 5. Provide an environment that respects the importance of the cat’s sense of being small. Cats use their sense of smell to evaluate their surroundings to maximize their sense of security and comfort. Cats mark their scent by rubbing their face and body, which deposits natural pheromones to establish boundaries within which they feel safe and secure. The use of synthetic pheromones, such as Feliway, can mimic a cat’s natural pheromones

and provide a calming effect in a stressful situation. Threatening smalls and the inability to rub their scent can sometimes lead to problematic behaviors such as passing urine or stools outside the litter box, spraying, and scratching in undesirable areas. Meeting the environmental needs of each cat will improve cat welfare, optimize health care delivery, and support the relationship between cats and their owners.

creative planning for your future ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Creative Planning believes there’s a richer way to wealth. Their team of CFP professionals, CPAs and attorneys work together to create clear customized plans to maximize your wealth, all in one place. Their award-winning in-house services span a variety of financial d isciplines, i ncluding c omprehensive wealth and investment management, insurance, tax prep, trusts, estate, financial and retirement planning. Founded in Overland Park, they have since branched out across the globe, gaining a national reputation that has earned them numerous prestigious awards, including #1 wealth management firm i n America by Barron’s, CNBC and Forbes. President and CEO Peter Mallouk shares his wealth of knowledge with approachable financial advice. Two issues coming together at once inspired the creation of Mallouk’s business. “My dad was a physician frustrated with his financial advisor who sold him products and didn’t really explain things well, and I was an estate attorney that saw a full view of the advisory world and thought there was a better way to deliver
the all around experience. Ultimately, that led to Creative Planning offering investments and planning as well as legal and tax advice in a very approachable, consultative way.” Mallouk has written several books, including 5 Mistakes Every Investor Makes and How to Avoid Them, and has cowritten Unshakeable: Your Financial Freedom Playbook and The Path: Accelerating Your Journey to Financial Freedom with Tony Robbins. “People are generally fearful of investment and feel the market is too low or too high at any given time. When there is a correction (a drop of 10% or more), people generally stay on the sidelines or sell their stocks, fearing the market may collapse and stay lower—there have been over 100 corrections, usually about one per year, and they have all ended with a full recovery. Some of these corrections turn into bear markets, a drop of 20% or more, and all have ended with a full recovery. On the other end of the spectrum, many are worried about investing when the market is at an CONTINUED >

all time high. This is actually completely normal and happens about once every nineteen days—in other words, all the time! We aren’t surprised when a Hershey’s bar, box of cereal or ticket to Disney World costs more, but somehow are shocked when the market hits an all time high. It’s normal, and inflation has a lot to do with it.” For those with a 401(k), Mallouk says to do everything you can to contribute. “Some 401(k) plans have an employer match, meaning for every dollar you put into the 401(k), the company will match—it usually applies to the first 3%. It’s a guaranteed 100% rate of return, and there is just nothing else you can do that is going to be as good as that. If you have the ability to contribute the max do that as well, but for sure take advantage of the match.” When faced with the choice to either invest or pay off debts first, Mallouk says to start with focusing on the interest rate. “All debts aren’t created equal—if you have credit card debt where you are paying 10% or more in interest, then paying off the debt before doing anything else other than a 401(k) match is the way to go. If your only debt is a home mortgage at 2-4% or so, then investing over a long period of time is very likely to yield you a far better outcome than making extra debt payments.” When planning an estate, it’s crucial to have a healthcare and financial power of attorney and a will or trust. “A healthcare power of attorney names someone to make healthcare decisions for you in the event you can’t make them for yourself. A financial power of attorney names someone to make financial decisions for you if you can’t for yourself. Lastly a will or a trust both name who will handle things for you in the event of your death, and who will oversee and inherit your assets. Trusts tend to make more sense for wealthier individuals as it can bypass the probate court system, which keeps things private, allows for a faster transfer of assets after death, and because it skips the court system, settling the estate is much less expensive.” When looking for a financial advisor, find the right one by asking the right questions. “Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. A minority of financial advisors

are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your best interests. There are thousands of advisors that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time. From there, look for education, credentials and experience with people like you.” As for the future, it’s never looked brighter at Creative Planning. “It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history. In many ways, it feels like we are just at the starting line.” For more information, visit CreativePlanning.com.
