WOULD FIND EXCITEMENT, ENTERTAINMENT, AND GLITTERING LIGHTS, BUT I HAD NO IDEA THE DEPTH, THE BELONGING, AND THE COMMUNITY I WOULD DISCOVER OVER THE YEARS. I began my Vegas career on the Strip, deeply engaged in the tourist experience and with transient coworkers that let the city get the best of them before they moved away. It wasn’t until I began working at the Make-A-Wish Foundation that I truly found community. The charity attracted people from all walks of life who wanted to selflessly give of their time and money to help children.

Later, during the Great Recession, I witnessed so many locals struggling. In response, I founded Dress for Success Southern Nevada to empower women personally and professionally, and to help them regain their dignity, self-respect, and personal inspiration. Raising my hand for this volunteer undertaking was no small feat. But then, in traditional Vegas fashion, many others raised their hand as well. One after another after another. Each supporter came for their own reason, and each was able to empower their neighbors to thrive. Vegas is built on hospitality, so I guess it should be no surprise that the people are at its heart. Even after the past year, when Vegas faced uncertainty and the beaming lights went

MINOR LEAGUE BALLPARK HOSTS MAJOR EVENTS
IN EARLY MAY THE LAS VEGAS BALLPARK WELCOMED BACK FANS FOR ITS FIRST GAME IN 606 DAYS, AND THEN COMPLETELY OPENED IN THE BEGINNING OF JUNE. COVID-19 wiped out the entire 2020 minor league season and more than 5,000 baseball fans returned to the stadium on May 6 to watch the Aviators opening game against the Sacramento River Cats. Summerlin and valley residents, Vegas visitors and baseball lovers from across the globe can now enjoy live games at the ballpark, which celebrated its pre-pandemic grand opening in April 2019. The $150 million ballpark replaced the old downtown Cashman Field which housed previous Vegas ballgames. The award-winning ballpark is part of Vegas’ continuing evolution as a major sports destination. “We designed one of the finest Triple-A stadiums in the country,” said Las Vegas Ballpark Vice President and General Manager Chuck Johnson.

Baseball fans can also experience luxurious Playstudios air-conditioned suites with wider seats, a full-service bar with more than 20 different beers and specialty cocktails, and a view of the largest LED video screen in minor league baseball. The space was designed for much more than baseball games. “We created the new ballpark to host a wide variety of year-round community events and gatherings,” said Johnson. Guests can enjoy the center field swimming pool, experience films on the field or in the stands during “Flicks on the Field” monthly movie nights, listen to upcoming live concerts or head to the massive show kitchen for an evening of elevated baseball food from Vegas celebrity chefs. “We wanted to take advantage of the outstanding and diverse local food scene and bring Vegas-worthy elevated food to our ballpark,” said Johnson. THE SOUTHERN NEVADA BICYCLE COALITION’S FIGHT FOR CYCLIST AND PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

Red Rock Lifestyle | July 2021
Despite the efforts of the SNVBC, on December 10, 2020, a fatal incident between a motorist and numerous cyclists occurred. In response to their grief, SNVBC created a three-part educational campaign to help achieve their goal of zero collisions on Nevada’s roads. SNVBC’s Campaign “Change Lanes for Bikes. It’s the Law!” and its initiatives revolve around teaming up with local and state law enforcement to raise awareness among motorists in AFTER AN EXTENSIVE PERIOD INDOORS, SUMMER IS

Founded in 2017 by former President and now Secretary Keely Brooks, the Southern Nevada Bicycle Coalition is a nonprofit organization that advocates for the safety, education, and awareness of cyclists and pedestrians. Brooks, an enthusiast herself, was approached to

create an advocacy group for cyclists. There was a need within the bike community to have a “seat at the table” to influence government officials and leaders while they planned the future of our city. “Historically, urban planning has focused on getting cars from point A to point B in the fastest way possible,” said Brooks. “Without keeping the cyclists and pedestrians of the community in mind.” The SNVBC represents the forgotten members of our community and advises leaders on how to build our cities with cyclists in mind. Since starting, the county has added hundreds of miles of bike lanes and additional bike infrastructure. For these reasons, the SNVBC has gained mass support among recreational communities.
