Cristine Lindholm | cristine.lindholm@lifestylepubs.com

Welcome to the inaugural Red Rock Lifestyle GENTS edition! THERE IS SO MUCH GREAT CONTENT FOR AND ABOUT MEN IN THIS ISSUE. I love the Father’s Day gift guide promoting local businesses. Local experts provide great information about items commonly purchased by men – diamonds and barbeques. And now that things are heating up outside, we introduce you to a very well-respected local HVAC company. Of all this content, I am most fond of the article featuring local businessmen who share their favorite go-to drink/cocktail and their recipe for success. In honor of a classic James Bond line, the article is titled “(Not) Shaken, Not Stirred.” My father loved James Bond movies and this article made me reflect on my dad, Paul Leslie Carroll, Jr.

My father was an officer AND a gentleman who graduated from Notre Dame. He was an accomplished civil engineer who served over 20 years in the USAF. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He also worked for the City of Henderson. After a seven-month ordeal, on the day after Father's Day in 1992, my dad lost a hard-fought battle with cancer. As you can imagine, Father's Day is a little hard for me. I'm dedicating this issue to my dad and it feels therapeutic to do so. The release of a new James Bond movie in October is not the only thing my dad would be looking forward to right now. After a 2020 hiatus, the 2nd annual Las Vegas Concours d’Elegance is returning. Their new stage is in Summerlin and Red Rock Lifestyle is thrilled to partner with organizer Stuart Sobek. My dad was a huge fan of

Red Rock Lifestyle | June 2021

THERE ARE CERTAIN GUIDELINES TO MAKING THE PERFECT DRINK. One part this or that, a garnish here or there, and maybe a mix or muddle. And of course – is it shaken or stirred? When a recipe is concocted just right, perfection is the result. In business, the recipe is just as important. Each step and process can lead to success if done right. After this past year, we may all feel a little shaken and stirred, but there are some businessmen who have led their companies through COVID-19 and not only survived, but also thrived. We heard from five successful Red Rock area businessmen who enlightened us on their recipes for success. CONTINUED >

find something that works, you refine it and make sure it has staying power. Additionally, you have to implement a strategy that encourages your customers to take a look. After that, use customer feedback and make adjustments. Know what you don’t know and be willing to enlist others to gain an understanding of a particular strategy, technology, or concept that may benefit your business. The bottom line is that it is very difficult to do it alone. Be actively involved in the community and understand we all have an obligation to make a positive difference. Finally, you have to have people around you that you trust and empower. Creating a team that works hard and enjoys working is critical.

Taking the time to assess situations and the people that you work with is vital to any organization. For myself and in the restaurant industry, collaborating with my staff and watching them grow from within is one of the most important aspects of the business. It’s also one of the most self-satisfying aspects. I try to be completely transparent and very real with the people I work with. In the awkward moments that come up (and they always do), I find it best to just be up front and get through it. Let them know what you need from them and make expectations as clear as possible. Keep communication lines clear and moving at all times. And most importantly, always remember the man behind the man!

RANDY GARCIA Investment Counsel Company San Pellegrino I can attribute my professional success to three specific principles positively correlated with bestin-class client service: 1) Continuously building my knowledge base at a rate faster than the industry norm so that I am positioned to recognize and exploit more opportunities on behalf of clients. 2) Proactively identifying and delivering on areas of service that investors value, and far exceeding what is standard in the financial services industry. 3) Retaining satisfied clients who serve as a continual referral source because of the high level of trust and confidence fostered by effective guidance, perspective, and judgement.

Subaru.

More Than A Car Company

(TM)

SUBARU OF LAS VEGAS is located in the heart of exciting Las Vegas, Nevada at 6455 Roy Horn Way. As a proud member of the Findlay Automotive Group, we are your premier source for NEW, USED, and CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED (CPO) Subaru vehicles in Southern Nevada. 0% Financing on select new 2021 models for well qualified buyers.

Summer is nearly here, and what better time to hop into your Subaru and create new memories…or perhaps even drive down memory lane? Imagine this; the sun is shining and the weather is perfect. It’s just you and your best f riend (your Subaru, of course) hitting the road for the summer of your lifetime. You’ve prepared the perfect summer road trip playlist with all of your favorite songs that’s now blasting through your Harman Kardon speakers. A clean and beautiful sound that you feel at the very heart of you. Your GPS Navigation guiding you to a familiar place, you have no worries or cares. You’ve finally hit the first long stretch on the road ahead of you. As you’ve eased into the drive, you turn the volume knob just a tad more to the right and start singing at the top of your lungs with dance moves that no one has seen since 1991. You hear a chime and look down at your dashboard…your best f riend is reminding you to pay attention to the road. EyeSight® Driver Assist

flashes a warning that you’re swaying outside of your lane. You continue on your journey feeling safer than ever. You see a highway exit sign indicating that gas and food are ahead. You signal your move to take the exit, but Blind-Spot Detection lights up the corner of your sideview mirror letting you know to not switch lanes just yet. Your best friend there for you again. You hit the road again and realize you’ve reached your destination in no time! You pull in and see your friends already starting to set up camp. You begin to reverse your Subaru in for ease of unloading when your vehicle comes to a sudden stop. Reverse Automatic Braking just saved you from running over an overly excited four-legged f riend who couldn’t wait for you to park your vehicle before attempting to say hello. You’ve finally settled in for the night. You’re all gathered around the campfire and you decide to send that great group photo you just took to your favorite social media

platform, only to see that the connection is slow and it can’t be uploaded. You walk over to your Subaru that’s parked nearby, turn it on, and connect to the built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. Your Subaru, the lifesaver of the party for the entire weekend as you share the password for your f riends to connect as well. The weekend comes to an end and it’s time for that dreadful drive home. You open your STARLINK App and use the Remote Engine Start with Climate Control to cool your vehicle down as you start gathering your things and saying goodbye. You hit the open stretch of road again and realize you had better check on your best f riend when you get back into town. You push the STARLINK Concierge button and have a service appointment scheduled just to make sure your Subaru is all set and ready to go on the next adventure. Your best friend, your Subaru. Reliable, trusted, safe, loyal.

HVAC unit to avoid any catastrophes. 1. LOOK AT YOUR FILTERS Your HVAC system has a filter, and like all other filters, they need replacing. Not replacing your filters can directly impact the performance of your system. Take a look at your unit to determine what kind of filter it needs, and consider the recommended replacement instructions. 2. CONSIDER YOUR LIFESTYLE Everyone’s lifestyle is different, and it is imperative to consider your lifestyle when it comes to the maintenance of your unit. External elements like living near a construction site or an area with a lot of dust or having your doors and windows open for extended periods can also impact the integrity and performance of your system.

ART OF SMOKING MEAT ENCOURAGES FRIENDLY COMPETITIONS IN NEIGHBORHOODS ACROSS THE COUNTRY IT APPEARS THE ART OF COOKING FOOD THAT IS AS OLD AS FIRE IS NOW IN THE MIDST OF A DELICIOUS RESURGENCE. We are talking about “smoked” meats and whether you are a home cook or a professional chef, this trend is catching on across the country. “I have been grilling since I was 13 and now, I get to do it for a living. It’s great,” said Steve Cook, co-owner of Wild Fig BBQ in Summerlin. THE STORY OF BRISKET: JOINT OWNERS & THEIR HUNGRY CUSTOMERS Cook, who runs the popular patio-styled BBQ

It’s really cool.” Here in Southern Nevada, smoked meat lovers aren’t just finding them at restaurants anymore. They are starting to cook barbeque delicacies right in their own backyard. One local grill expert says the big reason is because Americans have more access to a wide variety of “smokers” than ever before. “Smokers have been really popular, especially in the last four to five years, and pellet grills in particular,” said Omid Mahban, owner of BBQ Concepts in Las Vegas. “We operate a premier outdoor kitchen design and manufacturing comPhoto Credit: Stephanie Franje Photography

THE POWER OF WOOD PELLETS: BBQ CONCEPTS’ GRILLS AND THEIR TECH BBQ Concepts is Southern Nevada’s platinum dealer for Traeger, a national brand that has become synonymous with pellet grills. And according to Mahbad, it’s the ease and versatility of these products that make them so popular. He said it’s been great to see his customers, especially men, now making it a competition on who can best smoke their meats. “These new grills are Wi-Fi enabled so you just set it and forget it. You turn them on to a set temperature and just let the grills do the work,” said Mahban. “I see a lot of my friends using them, and I would never cook as much as I do if I didn’t have a Traeger. My friends think I am a chef, but the grill does all the cooking for me. The flavors from the wood pellet are not overwhelming and

STALLINGS’

WORKOUT ARTICLE CITY LIFESTYLE

SCOTT STALLINGS DISCOVERED HIS INTEREST IN GOLF AT THE YOUNG AGE OF 3. But it was the “aha moment” for his LOVE of the game that came in 1997 when Tiger Woods won the Masters and would forever change the entire landscape of the industry, as well as what Stallings would aspire to achieve in his future professional endeavors. He was a seven-time tournament winner and was an All-American while attending Tennessee Tech, and he has won on the PGA Tour three times as a professional golfer. After experiencing some health complications, Scott set himself into overdrive to “get it together” and tapped into his natural drive to be one of the best. With the guidance of doctors, surgeons, and his good friend Rich Froning, a four-time Crossfit champion, Scott developed a workout to trim 60 pounds, boasting 10% body fat, revising his daily eating habits, and sleeping healthily through the night. Had Scott not gone to the doctor because of that innate fear, he never would have known the diagnosis of sleep apnea that needed to be addressed. “You only get one body,” he says. “Golf is a grind, but don’t let physicality get in the way of your game,” Scott says. 46
